There's no way we'll ever see a truly waterproof case that will let you use the phone while swimming. The phone itself would have to be designed to be waterproof from ground up.
The 2 main issues the case needs to overcome is the capacitive screen and the speaker/mic. A layer of water tends to block the touchscreen. This can be seen with wet applied screen protectors. The screen doesn't work properly until the water has been completely tried.
The more important issue is with the speaker/mic combo. In most cases watertight means air tight too. We all know what an airtight enclosure does for sound. How do you plan to make a phone call with decent volume through an airtight enclosure? Although it's possible to transmit sound through objects like with the cup/string method but like I said the phone would have to designed for use in water from the ground up.

If your talking about airtight doesn't mean vacuumed environment... Air still exists inside the phone, waves can easily transfer from air -> plastic -> air...

um...I bought a waterproof case for my Xperia S. The touch screen works perfectly without the need to be dried.
About sound waves, it travels in water and air. Air tight doesn't mean soundless. A vacuum means soundless. Two completely different concept.
And why you want phone call under the water? Most of us who wants water proof case is to take to water sports and maybe take a few videos without damaging the device.
So yes, those cases exist, in the past, now, and in the future.

umm, ya ..no I guess you don't get out a lot but I work at Best Buy and there is a case for the iphone 4, 4S, and 5 called lifeproof and it is waterproof up to 6 Ft my friend has it and he takes pictures underwater in my pool and they look awesome. Also about sound quality, sound quality is actually improved, I didn't believe it at first but the lifeproof case redirects sound from the bottom of the iphone and turns the whole back of the case into an amplifier, it's rather impressive technology. For plugging up the charger its no problem you just open the port, it says it keeps it's waterproof seal for thousands of open/shuts, and advises that you should open/shut it around 2 times a day and the seal should be fine. Mic works fine. The only downside to this case is the 80$ price and that you can't dock it without an extension everything else works great. And yes he does go swimming with it just not over 6ft deep.
The technology being completely possible, the nexus 4 is going to be one of the most popular phones because of its cheep price, amazing specs, being part of the pure android experience nexus line, which means tons of support from developers. It's going to be one of the most popular devices ever built and so i wouldn't doubt that they make a waterproof case for it.
Not meaning to bash you, next time just make sure to do a 10sec google search of "waterproof phone case" and see how hard they are to make before you rule out the chance of nexus 4 ever getting one/ getting one soon

That iottie case is only a temporary case and is not meant to stay on the phone for long. I've seen it at the store and it's not very durable and wont hold up for long. Why would you want a waterproof case on your phone all the time? Even the waterproof case for the iPhone is very bulky and you wouldnt want to keep that on the phone 24/7. There is no waterproof case like that for the nexus 4 and most likely never will.
Most of the time you can salvage a phone if it just took a quick dip, the phone will power down automatically so just let it sit for a few days to dry. I've heard that dunking the wet phone in 99% iso alcohol to displace the water since the alcohol will dry much faster also works well but never tried it.
I bought today sealabox 3xl for my nexus 4. Somebody have just try it?
For me the best waterproof cover is ipega. I writed to the manufacture some months ago to ask for an nexus 4 version. Plese do the same. Sorry for my English.

The Galaxy Active and the Xperia Z are both going to be waterproof, so I think that I will take my chances with those rather than paying 50 bucks for someone to spray paint my phone.
the problem with this waterproof case will be condensation when the cpu heats up after using the phone with gps for example! and if condensation is created in an air tight environment, the electronics of the phone will eventually see water!
That case is probably only good for just a few hours of stand by at a time and if you start recording underwater videos and your cpu starts heating up your gonna get some condensation in the phone!

Unless you phone is exuding water vapor it wont condense on to the inside of the case. Conversely your phone exuding heat would warm up the case driving away condensation.
Putting your phone into a case while in a humid environment then moving to a cold one would fog up the inside. Nothing else can really.
R3dRumz i dont mean to be dismissive but so long as your sealing the case in a humid environment the case will have the moisture within. If the phone is closed up in a dry environment its pretty much okay.

I agree. I'd be more interested in a phone that won't show the wear and dings that day-to-day life bring to a phone. It's a sexy piece of hardware! I don't want to have it in a case all the time!

I love how the liquipel videos say "Now, our company does not recommend that your Liquipel coated device come in contact with water". Nice disclaimer there. Anyone know what their warranty is like?
As far as the device breathing, I don't think it's an issue. The coating doesn't seem to be like a bag, glove, etc. It's super thin. Air, basically heat transfer, will work just fine. It's like putting a tiny coat of polyurethane on something, heat still transfers.
My questions are with the contact leads for the SIM and SD card. Does the coating effect flow even in a very small manner?
We need a scientist to tell us.

For anyone wondering how the phone will breathe, they put the phone into a vacuum sealed chamber, and coat it at the atomic level, binding it with their water protection.
As you can see in their videos, it works underwater, with the ports submerged, you could just dry it off, plug it in, and work again.
They say it'll last for 30 minutes underwater, so yeah... you could technically use it underwater (only at 3 feet though, anything deeper must mess with something).
It also gets into every little nook and cranny, so EVERYTHING is covered, including the insides (internals) of the phone.
Pretty amazing if you ask me.

I am not sure if the coating still allows conductivity so the ports will work.
It doesn't look like it conducts across the coating since the phone wasn't fried after they coated it, so that is a positive.
I use wireless for everything with this phone (wireless charging, bluetooth earphones, dropbox, etc.) so it wouldn't necessarily detract me as long as it doesn't affect those signals.
Another thing I am not sure about is how long it lasts (how often would you need to apply it to rely on it to work over time).
I am still trying to figure out why this hasn't been capitalized by any other manufacturer (car companies, electronic companies, clothing companies, anyone product really). There must be a downside besides the frost coating you get if you spray a thick layer on dark surfaces.

I think if it is applied correctly to the original S4, it could work well. The video showed how to apply it to an iPhone, but I think there might be more to it than what they showed. The question becomes where to apply it and how much to use? Obviously it would just help add to water resistance and wouldn't make it completely waterproof. But for the Active, it might help to close the small gaps that seem to let a little water in (earphone and speaker holes, etc...), but again, the question becomes how much and where. I don't think spraying it on the screen will work out so well.

Right, I was thinking it would be perfect to use on the Active in those spots. Maybe it would allow the removal of the USB cover as well. However, I don't want to be the test dummy so I'll likely keep my phone as is.

I know that has been an option for a while but I think the NeverWet has the same potential if applied correctly. I think the fact that the liquipel people apply it for you helps in the fact that they have experience in knowing how much and where to apply, but at the same time it means you would have to send the phone back to them for touch ups and reapplications...which can be expensive and time consuming.
And regardless of what either one of them claims, I would still just consider it an extra level of water resistance and not water proofing. I would like to see a blind test of several phones coated in each product and how well each product actually works in real world situations.

What they were saying in the video was to apply it to every hole and cut in the phone where water would get in through.
To me it looks like Liquipel is not the exact same thing. NeverWet created a consumer grade super hydrophobic solution. I am sure a mask is probably recommended, but you won't need to apply it in a vacuum to work and not harm your lungs.
Liquipel doesn't apply the coating based on the device. They are like a factory, putting the phone in the chamber, creating a vacuum, releasing the gas (first coating), and then "plasma" (second coating) to bind the gas to your phone. It potentially is better, since it probably is an even thickness of a coat everywhere the gas reaches (including the insides), but I can think it can also be worse since they probably kept the amount of coating to a minimum to not obstruct the screen. If you apply by hand, you would use more or less depending on the location, which sounds more reliable to me.
Galaxy S4 is $59.99 + $10 for priority shipping. If they gave you a guarantee that it will be water resistant or they will reimburse you for the phone, than obviously it would be a better option, but they don't. In fact, they disclaim:
Liquipel applies a preventative coating designed to aid in the event of accidental liquid exposure, and assumes no responsibility for water damaged devices. Liquipel does not recommend your device ever come in contact with liquid.
That's false advertisement. Showing how you put a phone you treated in the water, and than saying we don't recommend you ever do it...

I know that they want to cover their ass, but my issue is with them advertising it as an invisible waterproof case and not what it really is, a "just in case you drop your phone in water this MIGHT save it" solution.
You don't see case manufacturers dropping and throwing phones in their cases to show how durable they are and then tell you that it may not do its job when you drop it so don't do it...
I will probably buy the sprays tomorrow and experiment with an old phone I have laying around to see if the ports on it still work.
The only hardware feature missing for me in the galaxy S4 is being waterproof.

That scares me... I played in the pool for a long time with my active and it worked with no issues. I did swap it out for a new one because the power button was loose. So now im afraid to test the new one out because if it isn't air tight like my other one I don't want to lose it.
I plan on getting this and spraying my S4 Active's internals so that will probably make it ast a lot longer also my windshield in my car and my wife's phone

Which finish? I have the gunmetal one and I carry it around with my battery pack in the same pocket, and with some loose change and haven't scratched it yet.
I'm still waiting for my case to come in mail. The one on the top is from a bump.the other scratches are just from everyday use. I'm real good at taking care of my phones.

I just find it really unfortunate that so much time, energy and resources spent on designing a phone like this (one marketed for it's design as it's main selling point) has to be covered up with a case to be protected. That's why I don't get into the "OMGITSPLASTIC" conversations.
It's either "phone is plastic and cheap so I must put a case on it" or "phone is premium and sexy aluminum that will easily get damaged so I must put a case on it".
Not bashing, just think it's unfortunate.

Exactly, there's always at least one that complains. Shot, where can i find a $500,000 car that doesn't scratch? LOL, same concept people, stuff scratches, don't lose sleep over it. Id take this build on a device any day over plastic that snaps and breaks if dropped vs this kind of build which at worse might slightly dent the body and scratch but still hold it's own. Want to look fancy, wear your phone out naked as long as you can. Once it's all scratched up, then get a case. I'm OCD with this stuff so screen protector and case gets put on as soon as device is taken out of the box in store! I don't care if it comes with Gorilla Mega Super Duper Glass 1000, why take chances on something so amazing?

Oh ok.. well, where can I find a case to put on my "$500,000 car"?
I don't care what anyone says, if you drop a "plastic" phone..you are more than likely going to break the glass screen rather that the plastic. The same can definitely be said about a soft aluminum phone. It isn't offering anymore natural drop protection over plastic, I would argue less because it will dent and contort where plastic really won't.
It was the case with my M7 and my Note 3, both have been dropped a few times. Luckily both glass screens survived, but the Note didn't show damage from a short drop like the m7 did. My option was to cover it up with a case, hiding all the "beauty" it may have.
Now, excuse me while I go out and buy a case to hide my car and a case to cover up my pretty girlfriend. Don't want anything to get damaged, so I must cover it up!!

It's either "phone is plastic and cheap so I must put a case on it" or "phone is premium and sexy aluminum that will easily get damaged so I must put a case on it".

I see your point but my sarcastic point was that people want a scratch free device out of the box from factory. Just like a scratch free car out of factory lot. That is not possible, at least not anytime soon so like you said, battle between plastic and this metal type of casing. Personally i'll always choose a premium feeling metal type body over any kind of super duper plastic build that will just snap off from falls.

If the phone was scratched out of the box id be sending it back and would buy a 60k car if it had a scratch on it on the car lot? I wouldn't I'd ask for a different car..a scratch RESISTANT phone would be what we want out of the box.. I guess I was just use to a plastic phone.
I thought the op said it scratches easily as in saying after use and time it started to scratch. Not that out of the box it came scratched, totally different story.

I bought the the clear case from the Verizon store ..it's shows the back and protects at the same time with a bumper casing around it..def worthy of my 15 bucks

I would just get it covered in a clear film. You could use "Ghost Armor" or just get a nice skin online. Depending on whether you want to see the original finish. I hate cases myself and never use one, instead opting for skins as I only really care about scratch protection. I also don't use screen protectors as GG3 is strong enough.
So I lost my phone out of my pocket while riding my bike. Sprinting approx 40km up a hill. It jumped out, hit the road. And slid into the bushes. Front of the phone looks new back has some pretty bad scratches. But everything is pretty much fine. No dents no marks on screen. Was in a dot view case. A few scratches on the case and they instantly separated when impacting the ground, which kind of sucked.
That's funny because this feels like the most fragile android I've owned in 5 years. Mainly because my first one lived in my pocket but the camera still managed to get scratched to the point to where it was hard to find a spot on it that wasn't scratched. Now I don't feel comfortable carrying my phone at work. I carried my s4 everywhere with me for a year and not one scratch on the camera lens. This is my first phone with a screen protector on the camera lens.
That is why I have an otter box and a really expensive, tough screen protector. If you're planning on biking with your phone loose in your pocket, you may want to invest in those also!

ya the dot view case is cool but hardly serves the purpose of an actual case.
Should be a criminal offense to use a case for this phone.
Try and get a pair of arms not growing out of one's behind so the droppage is minimized.

Cases actually assist this phone in other ways than just protection. For one, they make the touchscreen less susceptible to undesired palm touches when using it one handed, and can hide the loose volume rocker issue many people have.

The trick is to get a clear case. That's what I did. Didn't want to cover up all that arctic silvery goodness. :good:
Oh, that and not to drop it....
I would suggest getting a case like this for biking.
Hyperion M8 Case
The phone is no longer slippery and won't fly out of your pocket.
I use it for mountain biking and it stays put no matter where I put the phone (shorts pocket, back of jersey, etc.)

It's just fine to spend money for your phone's protection. This is one of the nicest phones.

I agree on the camera screen. Mine has a couple scratches as well. Never had any other phone do that. However the rest of the phone is scratch free which is even more strange. What protector are you using on the camera screen? I think I'm going to get HTC to fix it then apply a protector to it.

It feel out of my sweater's pocket right onto the blacktop as I was getting out of my car. Minor scratches on top left and bottom right on the back side. Oh well. I'll have to be more careful.

I thought I had a ton of scratches on my lens,I would wipe it off with a soft cloth and they wouldn't wipe off. Well today while sitting bored I just took my sleeve and rubbed with some pressure for a good 5 minutes. All those marks that looked like scratches all came of . Might try some alcohol on a qtip when I get home.
going back to the original op issue. I use the dot case when not biking and I use a otter box defender case mounted to the handle bars when riding. So far the otter box works very nice and does not come off on the bike ride. It takes around a minute to put the phone in the case every ride, but nothing to long.
one added bonus about the mounted otter box and m8. When listing to a talk podcast I sometimes do not use headphones, the speakers are plenty loud.
I will most likely be going to best buy tomorrow to get a lifeproof for my g5, but I'm curious on the speaker and if it's f effected and if so how much? When/if (only is speaker is murdered) I get it I can also answer questions if you guys have any.

For a 80 dollar price the case feels extremely cheap. I had it for a couple days but returned it. first case failed water test bottom port doesn't "seat" but is sealed by the pressure of clipping it together. (probably the most likely fail point), The screen protector sits too far from the screen you have to apply pressure for the screen to work. It's also difficult to swipe down from the top. There's thin sheets covering the camera and finger print scanner not sure how well they will hold up over time. As far as sound the back has a gap as well creating a vibrating effect when using the loud speaker. It's not hideous but quite annoying just the same. I didn't record any sound but chanced are that may be distorted as well. But some people may like the rattling sound of the speakers since lifeproof is calling it their sub woofing system lol. But this is just an opinion. You may like it.
I got one... I got it for functionality, as a machinist everywhere in my work area is oily including the air.
As mentioned above it does have a cheap feel to it. Mines passed the water test and that's what I was MOST interested in.
Touch navigation is flawless for me even with oily hands.
I was pleasantly surprised that the speaker/fingered print sensor/mic worked at all. Though output from speaker defiantly wasn't hifi. When I purchased I planned on always being connected on Bluetooth. After realizing that I could hear without headphones Bluetooth is now a option not a necessity.
Bottom line... If you spend time in wet environments it's a capable case up for task. If aesthetics is your goal go another direction.

Got mine at worstbuy the same day I upgraded to the G5. I'm usually dubious of screen protector/all in one type cases. Plus, I have giant fingers, so that was a concern also.
I can happily report that so far I have not run into any issues with this case.
Notification drawer slides down with ease, sound isn't affected too much, touch is all but the same as w/o the case.
It just adds a little bulk to the phone (but that's expected with these types of cases). Otherwise, no complaints. Well worth the 79.99 investment.

lifeproof will be great , if you do not mind to pay for 80 dollars
I like mine. It failed the water test the first time around so I sent in for another that works well. The only issue I have is using headphones. For some reason it thinks I'm sending voice commands when I don't even have a mic on my headphones. Sometimes it works great other times I get regular OK Google interruptions and the music will pause/unpause itself when placing the phone in my pocket.
EDIT: I'm actually going to return mine now. Or at least sell it. I do not trust this thing to be waterproof. Whenever I used it in the bathroom while I'm taking a shower (it just sits next to the sink... like 5 ft from the shower even) I notice water vapor trapped inside between the screen and protector the next day. This is the 2nd one I've noticed this with & the 2nd one even passed my initial water test, unlike the first. I don't trust this USB port cover to ever be waterproof and the issues with the headphone jack are just an icing on the cake.

The case is water proof. Not steam proof. Steam is a vapor not a liquid like water.. Steam can easily get past almost any waterproof product

Damn, someone should tell their customer support so they can tell dummies like myself haha. My phone got soaked in a camelbak related mishap the other day (works fine, got completely drenched while on. water in the battery compartment and everything) so I've been using the lifeproof since then. Their customer support is very nice and hassle free though.
