Hi everyone,
I have a question about upgrading to 5.0. I know that ART is now the standard run time, but I don't know if that changes anything with how ROMs are flashed now. Usually, you have to wipe DALVIK, among other things, before you flash a ROM so that you can get it to work properly. Unless I'm misunderstanding, DALVIK should no longer be present, so, how does that affect how TWRP works?

Twrp works just like it used to. No problems at all

wiping "dalvik" or "art" before flashing a rom is pointless. it will automatically get wiped when you flash the rom. and it has nothing to do with how twrp works.

i looked through the forum and didn't find this exact question so i'm sorry if it's been posted before.
basically what i'm wondering is if i have a ROM installed, let's just say one of the new ICS ones, and a new release of that ROM comes out, is there a way to upgrade to the newer version without having to install all my apps and stuff again through titanium backup? i hope that makes sense. in other words, is installing a new version of a ROM that you are already using going to be the same process as flashing a new ROM entirely? that could get annoying with newer versions of ICS seemingly coming out twice a week.
thanks in advance!
It's recommended to wipe and reflash, but I just flash over top and if there's problems I resort to wiping. Clear cache and dalvik and just flash over top, your apps will still be there. But if you do it this way, you should not report any problems

Probably could have used search to find this. But typically, unless the dev say to full wipe, when an update comes out for the rom you are using you can flash the update over the older version without a full wipe. You are still required to clear cache/dalvik to do this. If anything that was working before does not work anymore after you have flashed the update over the older version, then you should go back and do a full wipe and flash the new version. I personally always full wipe when flashing a newer version.

It all depends on the ROM and what is updated. Seriously you have to go by what the DEV says in his thread. Some you can update without wiping and some you have to wipe. Others will automatically wipe for you. Best advice is to read the DEV's thread. They should all give you this info. And if you looked over the first few posts of his thread you really wouldn't be asking this question here.
Some mods have the cache/dalvik wipe built in, so just make sure you read through the thread for whatever mod you're trying. Wiping it twice won't hurt, but just wastes a little time.

I know that we have different method for rom installation but do you have any idea about RunnyDrOiD
Thanks

really? man. I'll make this very simple for you.
1. put rom on root of sdcard
2. boot into recovery
3. wipe data, cache, dalvik cache
4. install from sdcard the zip file
5. reboot.
almost all ROMs except for the PD98IMG.zip stock ROMs are flashed with the above method. Not all ROMs require a full wipe (data, cache, dalvik cahce) when upgrading within the same ROM but it is recommended to do so to avoid any issues. If you're switching between different ROMs, it is required to do a full wipe. Search my good man.
Hello,
I recently installed custom Jellywiz rom on my Verizon S3.
My question is if I have new custom rom versions or if I want to switch to a different rom, do I always have to go back to stock firmware and then install the custom rom or can I directly flash over my existing custom rom ?

New custom rom versions: Unless otherwise stated by the developer you can go ahead and just dirty flash right on top of the current one, but if you experience issues then i'd wipe data and cache and do a clean install.
Switching to a different rom: ALWAYS do a clean install (wipe data, and cache), i can't urge how important that is, while you may not have any issues whatsoever, you definitely could encounter issues because each developer may have different changes, and you don't want stuff to mix and match.

Thanks. So just flashing over existing rom after wiping data and cache will work. Will do that. I do not want to go back to stock rom always as that is time consuming.

Yeah this is fine. The way I've always done it. Also in clockwork, go to advanced >wipe dalvic

You can flash stock roms in CWM, but be careful if they don't include a kernel. If you go from AOSP to Stock, you might get a boot loop unless you also flash a stock compatible kernel, and vice versa. Boot loop is easily recoverable of course, but it will scare new users

hehehe I already got that scare after flashing new rom and it was taking a long time to boot during first boot.
Thanks anyways
I'll try to remember the steps of what happened as best I can.
T989 All Stock Running Gingerbread (Not sure what Firmware)
1)Installed CWM via ODIN
2)nstalled SuperUser via CWM
3)Installed latest AOKP from here http://aokp.co/devices/hercules
Booted up just fine but two problems
1: No Service
2: Touch screen calibration was WAY OFF
BYAM DURP OOPS
Realized that I needed to get the latest Firmware before flashing the latest AOKP!
4)Full Wipe(I think?)
5)Install latest Firmware (T989UVMC6, right?) (Also did a factory reset/wipe)
Phone boots into Stock with latest firmware, however the touch screen is still calibrated way off!
Do steps 1-3 above again.
Touch screen calibration is still way off!
My only guess on the reason/fix for this is that maybe this is still some lingering problem of flashing the ROM on the outdated firmware, so I need to perform some sort of deeper wipe than just a Full Wipe via ClockWorkMod in order to get rid of any lingering problems. And then flash the latest firmware, and do steps 1-3 above.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Any other information needed?
Thanks in advance!

I've done wipes like this
Via CWM I do the Factory Reset/Full wipe, then cache and dalvik cache.
Is there a way to more deeply wipe?
I saw in some other places that you can mount some locations and also wipe those too, I assume maybe doing that will result in a "fuller" wipe and also wipe the firmware too?
Care to explain exactly how I should be wiping?
Also after doing the wipe, do I just flash latest firmware, install CWM/root, and then a ROM?
Thanks

First,
Go to CWM
and go to mounts&stroage
then format everything except /sdcard
.
.
then flash latest Firmware.
then do whatever u like
like root, cwm or flash custom rom

So without a doubt I can wipe/format everything except SD Card and just flash a firmware via ODIN and be just fine?
Just double checking because it sounds scary to wipe/format so many things!

Formatted data, system, cache, and emmc.
Did Factory Wipe/Reset, Wiped cache and Dalvik cache.
Used ODIN to flash T989UVMC6, and still the touch screen is not calibrated properly.
However (I've seen other people report that problem but haven't seen a fix) when the phone is plugged in, it works just fine, but whenever it is unplugged the touch screen very unusable due to being calibrated so wrong. :/ After wiping and formatting everything and flashing a stock Firmware I'm all out of hope now!

My Oukitel's k4000 Touch Screen Calibration Messed Up After Flashing ROM on Wrong ROM
Hello,
Please help me. I tried to see if a ROM for 'Oukitel k4000 pro' could fit 'Oukitel k4000'.
Since it didn't work out, I flashed back to the original ROM of 'Oukitel k4000', but since then, my screen behaves wrongly to touches.
Could anyone faced and managed to beat this issue?
I saw several different posts on the net, but none of them actually helped me.
One more thing:
Please try to explain, as if you explaining a child, since my android experience is not that vast to follow all the shortcuts and proffecional terms.
Thank you,
Michael
OK, newbie here.
I've had my TF300T for around 2 years (or maybe its just one )
Anyway, I finally broke down and unlocked, rooted and applied the latest Omni ROM to my system without issue.
So far I like it just fine but would like to explore other ROM's as well.
Being a newbie I'm sure if this is some simple question.
Can I just flash my system with a CyanogenMod ROM without doing anything else?
I am using TWRP which seems rather easy to use.
Forgive the newbie question as I'm still learning all the parts and pieces of all this.
Cheers
Did you install the kitkat version of OmniRom? If so, then you can install the KitKat version of Cyanogenmod without a problem. The TWRP version for Jellybean is different than the KitKat version.

I shouldn't think it would be a problem, especially if you do a clean wipe first. I know there's a lot of discussion and debate about when you can dirty flash or when you should clean flash, but I like to play it safe so I always clean wipe if I'm switching roms JMHO.
Yeah, I installed the kitkat version of OmniRom so I was thinking it would be OK to install CyanogenMod after doing a wipe first.
Thanks!

Yeah, you shouldn't ever dirty flash anyways though unless you are just updating nightlies. From ROM to ROM dirty flashing is a no-no and could result in FCs or bootloop unless you wipe data.

Can you define clean flash?
Other than Dalvic Cache and Cache what other things need to be wiped to constitute a clean flash?

Wiping /data & /system
This is probably the wrong place to ask but I wanted to know what I should be wiping in TWRP before I flash a new ROM. It's been a long time since I flashed a fresh ROM (I'm on CM11S for quite some time) and I can't remember what I wipe to give myself a clean start.
Thanks

Depends what you mean by clean start, if you mean you want fresh out of the box experience (no apps, no pictures, no anything etc) goto advanced wipe and select everything apart from USB-OTG.
If you want to retain all of your media (pictures, videos etc) the standard wipe in TWRP should cover you (wipes dalvic, cache and data), you don't need to wipe system as TWRP will wipe it automatically before it installs any custom rom.
Thanks. I do want a out of the box experience but with CM12 nightlies instead of CM11S. It's been too long since I flashed anything to my device...
