[Q] Backup every time I flash a rom?

Hello,
I flashed CWM and did a full system backup/system wipe/cache wipe then installed xboarders 1.2.2 rom for the first time. I'm rooted! woohoo! I want to install eaglesblood new rom now. My question is when installing a new rom is it recommended to do a full backup or is one time enough? Thank you for any help as I am a newbie at this.

I always keep at least one or 2 backups of setups that I know work. That way if I screw something up while tinkering with my phone I always have a working backup to fall back on.
So yes, its recommended to keep a good backup on hand. You don't necessarily need to backup every time though. I just make sure I backup my texts before I flash anything. I hate losing those.
What you DO NEED to do EVERY TIME you flash between completely different roms is do a full wipe before you flash the new rom. If you're only updating to a new version of the same rom then a full wipe isn't necessary.

Thanks for your help! Also, when doing a full wipe do I need to do a dalvik wipe as well in the advanced settings in CWM?

I always do. It certainly wont hurt anything if you do. Just remember the first boot after clearing dalvik cache usually takes a little longer than normal because the phone has to rebuild the dalvik cache. Don't panic if it takes a few minutes even to boot. After the first time it wont take as long.

What to wipe when flashing custom rom?

Hello all. I know this is a noob question and Im sorry, but I need to ask.
When Im flashing a custom rom (going to try EOS again) what exactly do I need to wipe?
Im using TWRP. I know that I need to wipe the Cache, Dalvik Cache and system. Do I also choose the Factory Reset option? How about Internal Storage? Then there is the Format Data option. Which of these should I do?

If you do a factory reset, you don't have to worry about wiping anything else.
As for what to wipe for installing a custom ROM, it depends. EOS recommends a factory reset when you are flashing their ROMs going from any other type of ROM, including stock. If your on ICS, to jellybean, factory reset. 4.1 to 4.2, factory reset. One nightly to the newer one, you don't have too.
Internal storage is not something you want to wipe... that is any pictures, files, music etc. etc. that you have on the tablet, it will be the same as when you unlock the bootloader, you lose EVERYTHING!! Factory reset, you won't lose anything that isn't on the system partition.
Make sure you are on the latest version of the recommended recoveries

I searched quite a bit but was left unsatisfied with the answers provided.
1. How to fresh install roms (cleanrom in my case)? Just factory reset in recovery before flashing (TWRP 2.4)? Wipe Cache, dalvik before or after?
2. What's the proper order for wipe cache\dalvik\data? Is it before rom installation, after or both ?
Lets say im using stock rom and want to do a clean install. I just want what comes with clean rom. No leftovers from the old installation. What steps should i take?

I consider what I want and what is suggested as the proper install for the particular rom (see the op as roms vary).
You don't want anything left so I'd do spring cleaning. In twrp ( update your twrp to 2.4.1.0 ) if I wanted clean as you say I'd wipe cache, dalvik, data, and system (no formatting just wipe). Before you do this make sure you have one known good backup on your internal sdcard and on your external sdcard. You should also have a flashable zip on each. Insure you can see these files on both cards (with twrp) before you wipe. If you practice this method you will always have an out if there is a problem. If you don't then with what has been wiped you are assured a brick at sometime in the future. I do this before to clear my unit; when you are told to do some wipes afterwards this is to clear something in the rom you are flashing.
Sorry but I was required to say that as you never know who might see this in the future and not know to protect themselves.

Make sure you are unlocked. Install TWRP 2.4.1.0 over fast boot from a PC or too manager if you are already rooted.
You can install CROMI straight over stock with a dalvik cache and cache wipe but if you want a clean system just wipe data via the factory reset option inside TWRP (not the boot loader) and then flash the CROMI file. Recommend odex if you are just starting out.

thanks. thats pretty much what i did the second time. after failing to do a clean install i went back and almost used format which i guess is bad for those who dont know what the hell it does.. but the red letters in twrp swayed me away from that option

That sucks. There's software out there that can probably help you recover what was on your card.
As for a clean install, you'll probably want to throw a ROM image/zip onto another SD (if you plan on recovering from your current one) and then get into recovery to flash it.
It's a pretty general set of instructions, but as sbdags said though, you may find better advice in the right forum.

[Q] Rom + Kernel installation question

Hey Guys, Monday evening, i guess, i'm gonna receive my Nexus 5 32GB White... Well my question is:
After unlocking and rooting, I want to install Catclysm Rom + Franco.Kernel If i delete the Boot.img file inside the zip of cataclysm rom and replace it with the franco's img will it work?? will i have Cataclysm and franco.kernel at the first boot?? So i don't have to reboot again to flash the kernel

p.s.: In future when cataclysm will get another update, do i have to wipe evrything or just cache and dalvik?? (Before flashing i'll delete the boot.img file inside the zip so i won't loose the kernel)

Yes you can replace the boot.img inside the zip before flashing the rom..., but is it too hard to flash it separately?
With a rom update you can make a dirty flash (only cache partition+Dalvik cache) but if there is a new base it is recommended to do a full wipe to avoid some weird behaviors, bugs, etc... In any case if you do a dirty flash and you have some issues, you'll be good to do a full wipe.
Sometimes the dev recommend to do a full wipe...
For me it's always a full wipe, always begin with a fresh intallation so I'm pretty sure that all will be fine. It makes time to setup again the rom but...

Really thank you man, you solved all my questions I know it's not hard to flash the kernel separately but i'm lazy xD

Oh just another question if i want to upgrade my kernel, do i have to do a full wipe??

Anyone else flashing ROMs and finding them sluggish?

I used to flash things like Liquidsmooth and my phone would fly. Now when I flash GPE or a CM based ROM, it hangs and lags sometimes. Anyone have any similar problems?
Would also be a good time to ask, will wiping internal storage in TWRP delete recovery so I can't flash ROMs?

No issues here... To answer your question... no It will remove your backups if you stored any there. Once you have installed twrp it will always be there unless you change it.

That's your whole problem right there.
You are reluctant to wipe /data? You HAVE to do it if you go from one rom to another. Also called a clean install.
If you go to the Wipe menu in TWRP and just swipe the button it will wipe cache, Dalvik and /data except /data/media/ which is where your personal files live. It will wipe you apps and their settings, but you can backup those in TiBu and restore them afterwards. Do not restore system settings from TiBu though!
Give your phone a break. Do that factory wipe I described above, then re-flash your current rom and I can pretty much guarantee it'll be night and day.
This phone is so fast - a shame to gum it up
