Good evening,
So after having had a dumbphone for quite some time, it's showing the end of it's life. (I'm currently using a Samsung C3050 if you're interested.) I'm wanting to make the big jump to a smartphone, but I'm not yet that consent with choosing one. I do not know all the down and upsides to everything.
And neither do I have a lot of money, being a student and all. So far I managed to pick out some phones, which are:
Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 i8160
Samsung Galaxy S Advance i9070
LG Optimus 2X Speed P990
Sony Xperia Sola
Because of the little money I will have now and in the foreseeable future, I want the device to run a long and healthy in the inside of my pants pocket. Therefore I would like to receive update for quite some time, so it doesn't become an old phone months after I bought it. With that I mean, I want updates, and currently I would like my phone to be running Jelly Bean.
And now comes the problem that I can't seem to wrap my head around. I want Jelly Bean, and the updates that come after, either updates from the manufacturer or updates from a third party. The Galaxy Ace for example has an update to ICS, whilst the S Advance seems to have not. Both look like great phones, but it feels unsure to me that either of those will receive further updates. The Galaxy Ace even seems to be fading out of the stores, so I'm afraid Samsung will lose interest in that device soon and not bring out updates any longer, and neither the community is very much active for both the Samsung phones I selected.
Then I stumbled across the LG Optimus 2x Speed P990, which is also a dual-core, something that the previous phones also have. The only downside I see to that phone is that is comes from 2011, and thus is getting a bit older and might not receive that much updates, or might not become capable of that many updates.
The the Xperia Sola. I just love the way it looks, but the battery can't be replaced, there is not even ICS yet, and there seems to be indication from Sony that there will be even thought of JB. With those two things together, it feels like a phone which can't hold very long. I also considered the little brother of this phone, the Xperia Miro which should be released next month, while the price might justify the low spec, but then there is still the update issue.
Of course there is room for other suggestions, as long as it's in the same price range and available in the EU. I plan on using it as an all-round device, browsing the internet, chatting on irc, listening to (FLAC) music, and perhaps a couple of videos to entertain myself. The reason I selected dual cores is solely because of I think they will last longer.
I do give my apologies for the many words I have written. Therefore let me make a TL;DR to apologize.
Many, many thanks in advance!
TL;DR Looking for relatively cheap Android phone with JB in the foreseeable future, and future update support from either the manufacturer or the community for at least the upcoming three years.
There are no guarantees with any of those. I would think the Sony is the most likely to see JB. Samsung is somewhat hit or miss with phones outside of their flagship devices. Sony actively works to help devs with a few of theirs. LG has a pretty bad rep when it comes to leaving certain phones in the dust as well, but the Optimus should be okay. That's just my input.
First off where are you located? If your in the US go with the Galaxy nexus for $350 straight from Google. You will get all the latest OS updates with that phone.
Also you did say how much you plan on spending.

Xperia Sola WILL have JB, that you can be sure. No one knows when, but it will have it. I recommend it, half of this recommendation for being a Sony fan. The other half for what you said.

I've also looked a bit at the Sola, but what I don't like there is the small and embed battery in the phone. I don't get why Sony would pack a smaller battery for a phone that asks more.

Me neither. But know that all Xperia phones from 2012 were designed in Sony Ericsson era. The true Sony phones will come next year.

Today I was looking at the Galaxy S Advance and the LG Prada. I would prefer the S Advance over the Prada since it was cheaper, but there is no sign of support for ICS yet, the Samsung forums are quiet about ICS for the S Advance. Will there be updates for the S Advance?
And then I took a peek at the LG Prada. It's not that I wanted to go for the brand, but the specifications are nice and there is ICS on it already. But then, it is again somewhat more expensive. Would the Prada be worth it?
Hmm, well I personally have never been a huge fan of LG phones. That, plus Samsung's hold on the smartphone market is significantly more prominent than LG's. So if you're planning on flashing any custom software in the future (especially useful if you're not planning to get another one for a while), I'd pick one of the Samsung phones. Whichever one was more popular.
I still say Sony is your best bet. Out of the companies you mentioned they have the best record of supplying updates.
I've had my tmo s3 for a little more than a year now and it's still going strong and I like it but I'm thinking of possibly buying a nexus 5. Looking at used ones but also considering possibly getting it brand new from Google. Have any of you upgraded from the s3 to this? Would it be m much of an upgrade? Just wait for another 6 months for the nexus 6?
Aside from possibly the camera...and no SD slot.....yes, a huge upgrade. IMHO.
I just came from my GS3 to the N5 and the difference is night and day. Even with a KitKat rom on my GS3 it isnt nearly as fast and smooth as the N5.
Not to mention N5 roms are nearly bug free.
You do lose the SD card as mentioned above, the camera (I think) is a little better quality.
Battery is way better.
Thanks for the replies. I was thinking I'd wait for the lg g3 but it seems like the g2 is difficult to unlock and root, at least when it has 4.4. I have been using KitKat on my s3 for so long I don't think I could be happy with anything lower. The s3 is good but after I've been using my n7 for a while the Samsung feels slow.

You won't be disappointed with the upgrade. Went from i747 to N5 and everything is so much smoother. Keep your s3 with a proven rom as a backup but don't expect to jump back to it once you feel the difference in speed and reliability of the nexus 5.

I came 2 days ago from a d2spr. I can't begin to explain the night and day difference between the 2.
Hardware aside, the development here is way more active than on the s3 side. Hope to see you here.....

One and half month back I had the same confusion regarding this.
But after switching to N5, I am quite happy than before, until and unless you experience it you wont understand the differences of its software and hardware from S3.

Please don't troll.
"better" is subjective. Samsung cannot make a touchwiz device that doesn't lag. All of us who have had Galaxy devices know this. The s5 is no exception. The OP did not mention the S5. If he wanted an S5, he would have posted this in the S5 forum. Lets try to stay on topic please.
For sure they are two different "worlds".
If you seek speed of light and high rate of updates then you should go, for sure, of N5

That's exactly why I was looking at the n5 and not the s5. I found a 32gb black nexus for $315 on swappa so it's on its way now. I know the s5 has better stats on paper but it would also ruin any warranty if I rooted it ( samsungs counter). I like experimenting with different roms and I haven't used tpuchwiz for months. I know the n5 isn't exactly new but it's new enough that it should get the next update version of andriod.
I came from the Note 2, which is similar spec to the S3, and here’s what I miss the most:
-Wolfson DAC: With DAC Direct, audio sounded far superior on Note 2 (the reason audiophiles love Samsung phones)
-APT-X Bluetooth Codec: Again, sounds far superior to standard BT audio
-Phase Detection Auto Focus: For fast focus lock. N5 uses contrast detection, which is why it’s slow to focus
-Camera voice commands: Handy when taking photos of the kids / pets etc
-Expandable Storage: I would have liked the option to use my own SD cards, however I have bought a USB OTG SD card reader so this point is moot now
Apart from that I couldn’t be happier with the N5, and am actually happy to be rid of all Samsung’s gimmicks and so called “features”.
So if you haven’t already, go for it!
Another question, I've read that google slightly changed the n5 after complaints about the speaker, is there any way to figure out if my used phone I just bought is one of the originals or a modified one? I know there's nothing I can do either way, just curious.

This might help identify what model you have:

I believe I have the "revised" model, but the speaker still sucks.
In fact, I should have added "speaker" to what I miss from the Note 2 in the list above

Nope, its complete BS. Some have little holes some have big holes. Some have softer soft touch, some have yellower displays. It's not a revision. It is not a concious decision.

I'm new to the N5 so wasn't aware of any of these issues until I read about them today, so I just posted the first link that appeared in Google regarding the "differences".
Good post though, hit the nail on the head regarding tolerance, human error, and everything else really.
Like yourself I have light bleed, but I can live with it as it's only noticeable when it boots up.

Aye, seems to be quite common these days that websites run a story without properly fact checking!
I am a sony fan for long years... Have owned z,z1,z2, and z3 for continuous years.
Now i want to buy z5 or z5 premium. The only thing that back me of from already buying one is the root status. I dont wanna loose the bionz and xreality from my sony phone. Also since the seller is offering 2 years warranty, unlocking it for root is just a bad idea.
But the sad fact is... I have been using android devices since 6 years, and using an android device with out root feels like using crappy "iphone" to me. Infact the second thing i do after buying any android phone is rooting it even before using it... Thats how much i want rooted status.
Sony just played a nasty trick on 2015 series as you all know.. No root with out unlock..?.
Still i hope we can achieve root some how, with out unlock, some day. But i was so tepmpted with z5 camera for now, that i cant resist myself in buying one, even if rooting it is still in baby phase.
So i want to ask the current owners of z5, or z5 premium, if you are loosing your picture clarity and xreality after rooting, also what about heat issue?
My other choices ( far away choices) are one two, and note 4.
So please give ur user experiences.
I would wait, Chainfire has rooted phones without triggering the kernel safe **** - which should allow us to backup our DRM keys, we just need an exploit to root with.
I've currently used 3 android phones with root and I nearly didn't buy the Z5 because of no LB root. However most functionality I am used to is already included in the stock ROM. Yes root (and xposed) would be nice but it isn't absolutely essential like I brought myself to believe.

+1, I felt and feel exactly the same way
Lol.. I cant imagin an android device with out root, no matter how good it is... I am even willing ti void the warranty for it, but this bionz is all i cant miss... Even xreality is not that big deal... But what good is it, for buying a phone for its camera, and then loosing its camera quality by half!!
Why not try some extra like the nexus 5x?
Sent from my Xperia z5 using Tapatalk
As i use mobile camera a lot.. I like good camera phones.. But i will still wait for android 6, to see if sony is willing to provide raw support. If not, then i will choose something else this time...
Bye for sony devices, got s6 edge plus . For that i have reasons
sony have played a dirty game with 2015 devices. With the new protection they introduced. I was willing to loose warranty and unlock the bootloader if i buy an z5, and i want z5 premium so badly.. but since unlocking bootloader will decrease the camera quality ,stops xreality, and stops the working of noise cancellation headphone, what good is z5 any more.
Ya i know samsung sucks.. still i dont have any choice. And this crappy phone is loaded with so many junks. I hate their os.
Sorry sony.. u just lost a loyal customer who loved you for 5 years..

Not sure what you are asking here, because from what I read you have already answered you own question. Root is such a big thing for you then right now don't buy the phone.

Was going to buy this phone too, except no micro SD, big mistake IMO Samsung, so Z5 it ended up for me
I was wondering if its worthy for me to upgrade to the XZ Premium. Im currently using a Z2 with a permanently locked bootloader in other words I cant unlock it. I do have ExistenZ rom installed which is nice. Im just wondering is it worth spending the extra to go from a Z2 to an XZ Premium? Its only really software interface changes that I will use the most but is that very worthy alongside the hardware upgrades? Or am I better off saving the money and continuing with my Z2? The Z2 was one of the best Xperias for a long time and still can be said to be but im unsure whether its worthy to upgrade now.
All help on this decision will be appreciated. Thanks.
I upgraded from the Z2 to the Z5C. Mainly for the fingerprint support and the (supposedly) better processor. Only 10 months in to my Z5C, I decided to upgrade to the XZ Premium. Support for the Z2 ended back in 2015(?). so yes, I do recommend upgrading to the XZ Premium. I usually upgrade phones every 2 years, so the XZP will have to do me good for the time being. I'm happy with the phone and I love it!
I did consider other options like the Samsung S8, but after comparing the two (borrowed one from my friend), I settled on the XZP. Plus, it's faster than the s8.

Thank you for the decision. Its only price thats an issue for me the XZ Premium in the UK is around £500 ($650) cheapest so I want sure if it was worth the money but it seems youve sort of answered that. I will always upgrade to another Sony phone because I always have and although other phones are great I like having all Sony things as you may tell from my signature. I will consider the purchase the only thing that will stop me is the price but other than that it seems a viable option I may very well go for. Thanks.
Edit: Theres also the possibility I purchase one with a permanently locked bootloader like my Z2 so I should take that into consideration too otherwise no root unlike older Xperias where root could be done on locked bootloader.

Where did you purchase your Z2? I'm pretty sure the units on Amazon have an unlockable bootloader. I suggest you purchase one from there? Or if you prefer going to the store, I guess you can check if the demo phones have unlockable bootloaders.

I purchased it from Gumtree because money was also an issue then. I managed to get it for £220 in Feb 2015. The seller got it from Vodafone and I had to unlock the sim as Iam on another network which is why the bootloader is locked. On amazon the XZ premium is £610 but ive found one on eBay for £500 that says its from Amazon. There are cheaper dual variants on eBay but I dont think theyre UK models. It seems if the phone is purchased from EE or o2 in the UK then it will have a locked bootloader so I think I shouldnt have too much trouble. Thanks.

I just ordered an XZ Premium now that I should recieve by the 6-8th September I will still keep my Z2 as a spare. I managed to snag it for £500 it retails for around £600 in the UK so I think I got a good deal and its new too. Hopefully it was worth waiting for a cheaper price to drop. Im sure I will be satisfied with the purchase also in the future when Sony drops support for it there will be more support for it on XDA.
Xpiera z2 was the best sony phone until XZ premium - so if you need a change, its the best moment.

Yeah I think ive made a good choice. Even the XZ was decent but its annoying how Sony release a new phone every 6 months. The XZ1 is the first Sony phone to actually be a bit of a downgrade to that of the previous flagship as its basically an XZ Premium with a 1080p display. Thats as far as im aware ive never seen Sony release a device like this before also if my purchase is legitimate then I will have snagged a bargain too.
One other thing I would like to know though is that does anyone run the device at native 4k all the time? If so is it worth doing and is there much of a difference? I read through the 4k thread but it seems to be mixed. Nobody really says its worth doing or not its kind of mixed. Also I dont really care if it affects battery life as long as its a worthy benefit.

I tried it for a bit and I don't think it's worth it.
Sure text looks smooth as a kindle but it makes the phone stutter every now and then.
It also causes some compatibility issues which seem far too inconvenient without a way to switch resolution on the go.
When I do want to use it (during VR), I'll just switch it then switch back.

Wow this is great! Even by watching this on my Xperia Z2 it looks pretty nice and life like. I would watch it on a 4K TV/monitor but it looks good enough at 1080p on my Xperia Z2 screen. I can only imagine how good it would look on an actual 4K screen though I am tempted to have a look. The colours shown really show how vibrant they are and the auto focus is so much more superior to that of my Z2 just the fact it can focus that close. I cant wait to recieve it I just got confirmation and a tracking number that I should recieve it by Tuesday. Joke is this phone has a better screen than my 4K bravia as Sony dont wanna support HDR for it.
One thing I would like to know. Does the phone still record 120fps at 720p using timeshift video if its still called that or does is the resolution bumped up for 120fps since it supports upto 960fps? Just wondering because with the 960fps you cant pick where you want the slow motion and 720p only looks so good, would be beneficial if its 1080p over 720p and would only make sense since it can record up to a high framerate. Please let me know, thanks.

Does the top one work like timeshift video? Also I was wondering if the resolution is the same for all or different for 120fps. Thanks.

2. Any specific problem thats common on Used/New Devices (Like the Nexus 5X Manufacturing Problem etc.)
3. Any must have tips/things todo right after getting the device?

1. For me, yes. I just purchased my second xz premium 2 months back and am extremely happy with it still. Even though it will not receive further official updates past android 9.
2. Not really, make sure the volume up and down work easily, and the speakers are not crackling. And turn it on and off to see if there is a message saying the bootloader is unlocked. If there is, offer a couple of bucks less. (Bear in mind, docomo branded and possibly others are not able to be unlocked)
3. If it has a locked bootloader still (and you no doubt want to unlock it ), there is a method to backup your .TA keys before unlocking, and restore them afterwards.
4. Xperifirm is 100% trustworthy, 1000's will agree. (What is automode?)
5. Nothing to worry about with twrp, everything works as expected.
Treble... Not so much. The XZ Premium does not have native treble. As it was released with nougat, it wasnt a requirement. There is a treble mod in the threads, but its definitely not daily driver material.

Try to even find a OnePlus 3T for under 150€ in germany. Other than broken ones its impossible, and with other Phones ive looked at its the best one for the price.

Xperifix is also trustworthy, but exclusive to Oreo.
On android pie, the camera works normally, the green camera issue that xperifix fixed is no longer a problem.
As for the price im not sure, if it helps i bought a new one in the box from ebay for 420 australian dollars, and can pick up a decent second hand unit for 200 to 300 Australian.
1. Is it still good in 2019?
Yes, and if you're not a gamer, it is pretty easy for you to use this device until 5G is really a thing. Although 4GB RAM is not great even in 2016's standard, 835 is still a powerful chip and somebody informed me that there *are* certain people that modified their maple and installed more RAM.
2. Any specific problem thats common on Used/New Devices (Like the Nexus 5X Manufacturing Problem etc.)
The screen of this device is easily aged and sometimes will be damaged, so please double check before you make your purchase and DO NOT BUY ANY JAPAN CUSTOMIZED PHONE.
Oh and one more thing, unlocking this device can cause lose on some camera features. Please make sure that you have backed up your TA before you unlock. Instructions on how to do so can be found on XDA.
3. Any must have tips/things todo right after getting the device?
Unlock and flash TWRP+Magisk.
Personally I don't like all third party builds that can be found online so maybe I'll build one myself when time is right. As for now, I'm OK with stock ROM rooted.
4. Can i trust Xperfirm and is the Auto Mode Officially Supported.
Yes but I haven't been using Xperfirm for long so my opinion on this one can be ignored.
5. Anything to worry about before installing TWRP/Treble?
The latest TWRP build on twrp.me have some problems and on my Chinese ver. G8142, it can't R/W my data . On 3.2.3 however it is working fine.
If you buy a chrome version the plastic sides gets erased and looks cheap and bad. Buy a housing and a screen protector. And don't leave it under the sun, when it's hot. Summary: 1. Battery last up to 1 day, depending on the usage. 2. Cameras are great. With latest updates it has improved. 3. No lag. 4. Sound on speakers is really low. 5. Careful with the charger. After about 2 years of charging cable it is kind a loose. 6. Don't change the firmware or unlock the bootloader. Not worth it. Phone is quite capable. And Pie version of Android is clean.7. Connectivity is quite a topic. With speakers or watches is working perfectly. For Casting to TV, not so good. Maybe it depends on the TV.. Enjoy
I can sell you mine for 100€

I do not recommend it ... when I bought it a year ago it was a plane, now sony is not going to give it more support and heats up like a toaster, because of that overheating of the processor, it has caused an orange stain to appear screen. you better buy a Samsung A90 or the Galaxy S10 line

But, you know that that device is cheap, which means that i have a low budget. So don't recommend the top line of phones as a replacement for an older and cheaper phone.

well the device have not the best developer nor Sony support, but if u know what u are doing u can be happy, all games i tested here were still fine, if the device u get is used, check not only if its unlocked but actually batterry sot, since this phone is 3,2A only a weared battery might not be what u want. Else i am still very happy with it.
buy orignal for $230 from ali express
If you are planning to buy, buy from ali express they got free shipping, i got a brand new orignal for $230. below is the link.
It really depends on the price. I got my XZP last august I think for around $120 (USD). This phone is worth it if you have sweaty hands. I can still touch the screen without wiping it despite of having a sweaty hands. Most newer phones doesn't have that kind of screen at that price range. The specs are okay for me since I don't game on my phone. Battery life is a bit meh having only 5 hours SOT with stamina mode turned on (only 3.5 hours if its turned off). The camera is still good too (both front and rear). And it still looks cool. You can compare it to other modern flagships today when it comes to design.

JP ver can't get bootloader unlocked thus no rooting or TWRP. Certain batch can do so but I don't recommend trying to get your hands on one unit cuz it's quite difficult. Stock JP rom contains docomo's bloatware and some japan only modifications but you *can* adb them out.
nothing more.
