s3 to n5? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had my tmo s3 for a little more than a year now and it's still going strong and I like it but I'm thinking of possibly buying a nexus 5. Looking at used ones but also considering possibly getting it brand new from Google. Have any of you upgraded from the s3 to this? Would it be m much of an upgrade? Just wait for another 6 months for the nexus 6?

Aside from possibly the camera...and no SD slot.....yes, a huge upgrade. IMHO.

I just came from my GS3 to the N5 and the difference is night and day. Even with a KitKat rom on my GS3 it isnt nearly as fast and smooth as the N5.
Not to mention N5 roms are nearly bug free.
You do lose the SD card as mentioned above, the camera (I think) is a little better quality.
Battery is way better.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking I'd wait for the lg g3 but it seems like the g2 is difficult to unlock and root, at least when it has 4.4. I have been using KitKat on my s3 for so long I don't think I could be happy with anything lower. The s3 is good but after I've been using my n7 for a while the Samsung feels slow.

You won't be disappointed with the upgrade. Went from i747 to N5 and everything is so much smoother. Keep your s3 with a proven rom as a backup but don't expect to jump back to it once you feel the difference in speed and reliability of the nexus 5.

I came 2 days ago from a d2spr. I can't begin to explain the night and day difference between the 2.
Hardware aside, the development here is way more active than on the s3 side. Hope to see you here.....

One and half month back I had the same confusion regarding this.
But after switching to N5, I am quite happy than before, until and unless you experience it you wont understand the differences of its software and hardware from S3.

Please don't troll.
"better" is subjective. Samsung cannot make a touchwiz device that doesn't lag. All of us who have had Galaxy devices know this. The s5 is no exception. The OP did not mention the S5. If he wanted an S5, he would have posted this in the S5 forum. Lets try to stay on topic please.

For sure they are two different "worlds".
If you seek speed of light and high rate of updates then you should go, for sure, of N5

That's exactly why I was looking at the n5 and not the s5. I found a 32gb black nexus for $315 on swappa so it's on its way now. I know the s5 has better stats on paper but it would also ruin any warranty if I rooted it ( samsungs counter). I like experimenting with different roms and I haven't used tpuchwiz for months. I know the n5 isn't exactly new but it's new enough that it should get the next update version of andriod.

I came from the Note 2, which is similar spec to the S3, and here’s what I miss the most:
-Wolfson DAC: With DAC Direct, audio sounded far superior on Note 2 (the reason audiophiles love Samsung phones)
-APT-X Bluetooth Codec: Again, sounds far superior to standard BT audio
-Phase Detection Auto Focus: For fast focus lock. N5 uses contrast detection, which is why it’s slow to focus
-Camera voice commands: Handy when taking photos of the kids / pets etc
-Expandable Storage: I would have liked the option to use my own SD cards, however I have bought a USB OTG SD card reader so this point is moot now
Apart from that I couldn’t be happier with the N5, and am actually happy to be rid of all Samsung’s gimmicks and so called “features”.
So if you haven’t already, go for it!

Another question, I've read that google slightly changed the n5 after complaints about the speaker, is there any way to figure out if my used phone I just bought is one of the originals or a modified one? I know there's nothing I can do either way, just curious.

This might help identify what model you have:
http://www.3g.co.uk/PR/Dec2013/google-nexus-5-gets-design-changes.html
I believe I have the "revised" model, but the speaker still sucks.
In fact, I should have added "speaker" to what I miss from the Note 2 in the list above

Nope, its complete BS. Some have little holes some have big holes. Some have softer soft touch, some have yellower displays. It's not a revision. It is not a concious decision.

I'm new to the N5 so wasn't aware of any of these issues until I read about them today, so I just posted the first link that appeared in Google regarding the "differences".
Good post though, hit the nail on the head regarding tolerance, human error, and everything else really.
Like yourself I have light bleed, but I can live with it as it's only noticeable when it boots up.

How Do YOU Like This Device?? [I am looking to purchase]

Hello guys,
I am just wondering, how do you guys like this device. I am interested in buying the device (at full price as my T-Mobile contract is not ready for renewal) and was wondering if there are any common complaints / issues to look out for. Thanks so much for helping.
PS: If you have time:
1) How is battery life? (IE, can it last one day heavy usage)?
2) Will this work with full HSDPA on T-Mo USA?
3) Is there a way to toggle the torch to use as a flashlight?
4) Where exaclty would be the best place to buy this phone without contract in USA? OR Will this work with a standard T-Mo SIM card?
5) Would anyone recommend me wait for any other device that is soon to come out or is already out instead of this device?
If anyone could answer just one of the above, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

1. No. Most I get out of heavy use is about 6 or 7 hours.
2. Yes.
3. Yes.
4. I would look on craigslist or Amazon.
5. I would HIGHLY recommend this device. Unless you're ok with waiting for the SGiii, this is the best you can get for T-Mobile right now.

I use this phone all day streaming, email, xda, general surfing, games and still end up with around 30% battery, pretty good in my book. Physical design, sense and the overall experience is excellent. There are some lemons out there but overall quality is high.
The SGiii offers a few more features in the department of removable storage but overall for the US release these phones are almost on par. (Same dual core CPU)
The most impressive feature is the One S camera. There isn't a phone out there in the world that can touch it, say the One X. I travel so a nice camera is a must.
I would have paid full for price for this phone but I had a ToS change to my contract that helped me convince T-Mobile that they owed me, on top of the issues I had with my G2x.
My wife jumped the apple bandwagon to get one of these phones and she loves it.

Thanks so much, guys. The only issue I heard a reviewer say was that the screen can, at times, almost look pixelated or distorted. Anyone even notice this or is this issue just an extreme nit-pick? Also, is there any noticeable lines that run across the screen in low lighting setting like the GSii?
EDIT:
One small thing, if anyone bought their phone from website and would like to share the site, please post a link below or PM me. I want to make sure I get the real model and not a banned or stolen model number. Thanks!
AND:
How does this device work without an SD-Card? Do games that require downloading separate files to run (IE The Sims && Xplane) still work?
i just bought the phone from tmobile customer service and i should get it tomorrow. cant wait to play with it. ive pretty much owned every higher end android phone for tmobile and i just sold my sensation 4g for this phone. i really want to play with the s4 lol.
Just thought I would say, I just got mine and it won't charge passed 99%. Just saying.

Pros:
Camera
Excellent battery life
Speed
Design
About negative sides some people mention:
Screen issues - nit-pick
SDCARD - no problems, phone DOES have a card but it is not removable. Admittably, would have been better to have 32gig version, but this one is enough for almost everything except maybe your video collection.
All in all never regretted it, best phone atm.

my screen has never looked distorted--gorgeous-
go to a store and play with it several times--i got mine at a tmo store
it takes a micro sim, regular ones won't work w/o cutting--not up on that. but you are going to get one anyway
My screen is amazing too, i had a gripe with amoled screens, like on my dads galaxy s, that it just looks weird compared to led screens, but the One S screen looks almost undistinguishable to leds, and luckily im not a pentile hater, so I cant really see the pentile pixelation
remember
HTC ONE S:
Very aggressive CPU here- Krait "Cortex A15" (220 linpack) but so ****ed GPU (Adreno 225)
(why ?
Go to youtube desktop and play 1080P HD video.....oh sorry you CAN'T play)
Galaxy Nexus
I don't feel any power., I feel optimization.
(Omap is sucks, GPU is PowerVR SGX540- this is too old crap, even if overclocked.
youtube test with 1080p HD video is FAILED also)
so only one phone is rocking, or Im sorry only one chipset is good-
it is "EXYNOS"
Regards.
I have gotten 12Hr and 30 Mins of usage (Heavy listening to music updating facebook ect. Pics, vids,) With 40% remaining. And yes to everything else you asked.

One s is the way to go on T-Mobile bro. unless you wanna wait for the galaxy s 3.
For me, I will never get a T-Mobile branded galaxy device because it will not be identical to all other galaxy s3.
So what does that mean? it means the T-Mobile s3 development will not be as good. On the other hand, every one s is the same and development will flourish like the sensation.
And to me Samsung is really getting wack, the s3 whole nature idea and Svoice, s this and s that. sound similar to ithis and ithat
And finnaly. you can't compare sense ui to touch wiz. sense is King of android ui overlays.

Remembered you too--
Yes, it is much better and development is growing now with LeeDroid on board. I thought I wanted a larger screen. But, now I know that would have been a mistake for me anyways. The 10gb free memory after OS and apps may be an issue for some. Not me. Otherwise, excellent phone. NO touchscreen issues, and you will know what I mean--
Ken
So there is ONLY 10 GB free (for **** like music/vids/pics) after the OS and cache partitions?!? That is REALLY cutting it for me, I thought there would be 16GB free. Uhh ohh...
And one more thing, my bad:
Will there be a difference of the global version of this device or the T-Mo specific version and what is that difference? Thanks!
Yea, the memory is only negative, but works for most people. I have a 1.3gb video, pics and a nandroid etc with 4gb left
don't know about any global version atm
Never mind, I was just getting confused between T-Mobile branded version and the stock version. They seem to be exactly the same.

[Q] How has the One S held up? Would you recommend one used?

hey y'all,
(I had this in general, but I was sent here into Q&A, so here I am!).
I have been considering a new phone to replace my (very) old Captivate. The Cappy has been a great phone, but the hardware is finally starting to wear out, and I am finally starting to feel the lack of power. The One S is now dropping to around $230 used off-contract, so I am thinking that could be a fun purchase.
My worry is only one : buying into a device that is having reliability issues. Has the One S held up? Anything I should look out for in a used device?
Would you recommend it for $230 used? I have other phones I am considering - $230 seems like a sweet spot for Galaxy S II or galaxy Nexus ... I know I could a dd a little and get a Nexus 4, but that "little (about $150) is a little too much for me.
Thanks
I'm not sure about everyone else but I;ve dropped my phone plenty of times without any problems. I rooted a couple of months ago and just added the LiquidSmooth ROM, which is lightning fast. Basically if you root your phone and install a Custom ROM you definitely won't be far behind a couple of the newer phones coming out, and I even venture to say the One S has a better price/performance ratio than most phones

yeah that is my attraction to it.
Sadly I have yet to hear of an Android phone without its quirks (for the Captivate: sudden sleep-death. GPS and power button problems are all hardware problems we just learned how to mitigate through software workarounds) ... so I am trying to find out what are the annoyances with the One S ....
Also .. the T-Mo version is a little different software-wise than the other versions, right? There seems a lot of discussion about Wifi problems ... any insights? please?
Thanks
Are you in the US? If so we don't have the Jb update yet but its coming. Overall I have no real complaints. 230 seems steep for a used device to me. How close to an upgrade are you?
Thanks for not getting bent out of shape at my comment in general. Just trying to keep it clean:beer:

Yes, I am in US. So no official JB, but it seems the development support for the phone is running apace, right?
I am shopping for a full price phone - it is worth the $45 monthly bill and unlocked devices. Thus no upgrade lures. Phone prices are not low - for sure. It makes the Nexus 4 attractive, but that phone is still $350 - $400 with taxes and shipping, so that is a little steep for me.

Thanks ... it seems like the specs bump is ather significant from the Galaxy Nexus ..... decisions-decisions.

Need help deciding.

Hey everyone. I know this has been beaten to death but I'm having hard time making a decision.
I have had an AT&T HTC One for the past week or so. I'm very happy with the phone and have had really no issues. I'm running 4.2.2 in it and am happy. Problem is I am seriously considering switching to the s4.
There are some features the s4 offers that I really like. (multi-view, flip to ignore, etc.)
I had One X switched to the s3 then to an iphone 5 but missed android so came back and got the HTC One. Like I said I like the one. The button layout doesn't bother me although I do like the physical home button on the S. The speakers are awesome and the screen is very nice.
I just don't know what to do. I still have time to swap it for an S before my 14 days expire but don't want to regret switching.
Opinions???
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
If you have 14 days to swap HTC one, then I am sure you will get some time for S4 too. I would say try both and keep the one you like. Ihas HTC one X, swapped it to get S3 and now using S4. Huge difference from S3 to S4 in screen itself. I played with HTC one too but IMO S4 has better screen. Also the so called gimmicky features are actually useful in S4.
Well here's my take on the two devises. I had the One for about 12 days before returning it before the 14 day exchange and got myself the GS4. Let me start by saying the One is a great phone but it has some downfalls especially after using the S4 after the One. The S4 IMO is superior in every way but 1. The build quality on the One is better but even with that I do prefer that the back is easily replaceable because you can replace the battery and Micro SD card also replace the back cover itself if you scratch it up or damage it on the S4. So even with the 1 downfall that the One has over the S4 it is still arguably not a downfall for some. As far as features go the S4 hands down has the Crown on this. Yes some do call them gimmicky but I find them to be very useful. I do not use all of them but do use most. The beauty of this is try them all and simply turn off the ones you don't want to use. I find myself using more of the features the more I use the phone. For me the S4 without a doubt is the better phone. But that being said my opinion and preferences of a phone may be different than yours, so I would recommend to do what I did and what viny2cool mentioned before your 14 day exchange ends, return it and try out the S4 for yourself and then decide which phone is better for you.

Wait, "WHAT"
They are so evenly matched its a very hard decision, one that you personally have to make. Ive been back and forth and own both. However, the biggest deciding factor FOR ME is the removable, swappable, faster charging battery, and the sharper camera in the day time. Im not a night owl, so I wont benefit from the Ultrapixel milarky. Usually when I take pictures its in middle of the day, outside and the s4 comes out much better in that scenario. I like HTC Zoe and the video highlights it automatically makes, but im sure someone will make something similar and sell it for 99 cents in the play store.
You just need to prioritize what YOU value most in your device, and then figure out which one doesnt match up as well.

Nope, I meant the IPhone 5s coming out later this year.
Don't forget now that we have the bootloader bypass by djrbliss the amount of roms to choose from are endless. So many dev's and so many roms to choose from, it's awesome! Played with the HTC One for about an hour. It's a great phone, I was just never a fan of Sense and HTC. So I was a little biased when I got my S4. I came from an atrix 4g, HTC Incredible, s2, note 2, s3, and now the s4. Definately the best phone I've ever had. All my previous devices I hated stock tw based roms. But just the s4 features alone along with xposed modules and 3minit framework it has rendered cm/aosp no longer needed for my needs. I would say try it out and if you don't like it then exchange it back. At least you won't having it stuck in your head whether or not you should have made the change or not.

Ok, but you said, "Problem solved." Yes, I suppose one problem would be solve...but on the other hand there would be a new problem: he would have an iPhone. And that's a huge problem.
I have a GS4 and I'm a big fan. That said I had a One for about 12 days before i returned it for the S4. The camera was my biggest gripe. If you're taking pics of something within a couple feet it's pretty good but forget about zooming. I use my camera on my phone a lot so I had to make the change. The one is a great device but I think I made the right choice in the long run.
Thanks everyone. I swapped it out for the S4 today.

I didn't want to make a new thread, so thought I could ask here. But does the GS4 have SVDO? I'm thinking about switching from Sprint to AT&T. How is the GS4 compared to the GS3? Only problem with the GS3 to me is the screen is too wide, is that an issue with the GS4? I haven't seen one in person yet.

The screen is technically wider on the S4...the whole phone is essentially the same size as the S3 though, so if you have a problem with the width of the S3, the S4 isn't going to be for you.
Both are great phones. If the One does everything you need then keep it.

Disappointed.. :(

Just received my Nexus 5 and am quiet disappointed with it.
The sound is OK, not as loud as my S3 but OK
The screen is very nice, but quiet a lot of display is used by the 'buttons'
Comparing side by side to the S3, the S3 seems to display more page.
Anyone have any comments or thoughts on this ?
Any way to get access to more of the screen without rooting it ?
Thanks

Just received my Nexus 5 and am quiet disappointed with it.
The sound is OK, not as loud as my S3 but OK
The screen is very nice, but quiet a lot of display is used by the 'buttons'

Its a nexus device, did you realize that nexus devices do not have hardware buttons before you bought it?
Not much you can do without root.
But if you do decide to root (use the guide in my signature) you can use pie controls or install a custom ROM/xposed module which will allow you to change the size of the navbar.

I realised that it had no buttons just thought it would have visible screen..
How does the nexus 5 compare to the S4, LG G2 and HTC One for useable screen space. ?

I was unhappy about the sound aswell, I rooted purely to install a sound mod that increases the volume greatly, and it doesn't have any distortion problems at all, see here.

PROS:
It's a decent price
It gets updates quick
It's fast
Camera takes decent pics in as long as nothing is moving
Design is good
CONS:
The cameras slow focus makes it next to impossible to take pictures of my new puppy.
The sound seems fine to me for speaker calling, for music not so much but who listens to music like that. I picked up a bluetooth speaker and use that anytime I want to listen to music sounds 10 times better than the speakers on any phone.
The screen size is good, the Galaxys are too big IMO feels like I'm using a mini tablet. I have the white version I don't care for the shiny edges but when my Nexus case comes I won't see them anyways.
My only other gripe other than the camera is I can't get an otterbox for it that's not the phones fault though.
Overall I'm happy with it for the price.

I don't know about it being another one.. But its the one I started.
I think I was expecting more screen real estate..
Google now uses the full screen any way to get other apps to do that ?
I upgraded from the S4 and love my Nexus 5.
Yup you should stick to Samsung, nexus won't ever make you happy. It just isn't for some people. Lol

My son has the Nexus4 which sounds louder, I have the Nexus 7 2013 tab which is great.
I like the phone, but it would be nice if the screen could be fully used..

Why? Did you not do any homework at all prior to purchasing this phone? Are you not familiar with Nexus devices at all?
I'm so tired of these people who drop a few hundred bucks and don't even know what they're buying. It's not like the navbar is some kind of huge secret that people are discovering for the first time. It's a fundamental part of the Nexus experience, and there are plenty of other phones you could have purchased that don't have it. Complaining about the navbar on a Nexus phone is like jumping into a pool and then complaining that it made you wet.
^^^this. OP, please send me your nexus, I'll pm you my address.

And back to my point nexus isn't for everyone. I agree with the comments above, you should of done research before putting down a few hundred dollars on a device. The navigation bar should not been a surprise to you.
But you have a choice to return it also.

Well, there's no need to flame hard, but with all the people complaining about the N5's drawbacks...seriously? On-screen buttons? Remember what forum this is; literally all the ROMs have features to use full Immersive Mode, enable PIE, or decrease button size. Go and have a flashing day.
It's no big deal if you can use PIE or hide it or make it smaller; it's definitely something I can live with. I can't live with the ****ty perf of the S4 or the big big big bezels on the HTC One though. Worth it if you ask me...
@albert_htc these problems can be resolved by flashing custom ROMs and kernels, as well as Mods only if you're familiar with rooting and unlocking your bootloader

These devices should be released with the problem already solved without the need to use third party roms

The navbar is not a "problem." It's an intentional feature of the device. There are mods you can flash to remove it, but they're not "solving" a problem - they're modifying or removing a feature that was intentionally included in the stock phone.
Once again, this is a standard Nexus feature that has been included in every Nexus phone and tablet that has been released since the Galaxy Nexus. This is not new, and it's not a "problem." The only problem is that there are apparently a bunch of people out there who refuse to educate themselves before plunking down hundreds of dollars on a gadget that is clearly not for them.

Sad but true. We spend $350+ on these phones we expect them to be flawless but sadly that's not the case. But what can we do we might as well unlock it's true potential and tweak them the way we want that's the reason why we chose android over iphone or for me that is
I have a custom ROM and kernel flashed and im very happy with this phone. Battery is stellar phone is snappy and I'm happy lol?

Is OPO a good buy?

Hello friends,
Here for a few suggestion and I mean genuine Please give ur feedback and experience
I have been here since long time, it's kinda a passion for me to upgrade to new phones. I am currently a user of Galaxy S4 just got an invite from my friend.
So willing to buy OPO but read that it has call issues and camera is very weird. Camera is almost same as of S4 both 13 mp but I want the users to speak out.
Help me out as the invite expires within 15 hours.
Regards
I love my S5 and I've had a Galaxy device since my S2.
I received an invite from a friend of mine for a sandstone black 64g $359 shipped.
I've not unlocked bootloader yet or rooted it and I've had a couple small issues but overall a very fine device especially for the money.
Its a lille smaller overall than the Note 4 display is very nice and its a fast phone.
Already a ton of development for the OneplusOne and although there are small things I miss from my T/W S5 I'm satisfied. Of course I still have my S5 and not about to get rid of it LOL I feel the OPO is worth the money.

See I am on the other end of the device spectrum. I just picked up a 64GB OnePlus One. Right now I'm using a Moto X. On TMo now with my BF. I've had every iteration of the Galaxy S since the original Captivate on AT&T up thru the S4 and I'm over Touchwiz and Samsung's lackluster build quality. I just recently had a G2 which I loved until I broke it. Been using the Moto X until I got something new and the One seemed like a great deal for the $$. Can't wait to try it out!

Just a little stutter at times in the statusbar and an occasional freeze but over the last couple days seems to have settled. I don't like the keyboard style I prefer the Samsung's. Other than that the black sandstone back is great and feels great in my hands.
It just feels like a solid device in my hands. Not a slippery feel at all. When I have some more time to read I'll unlock the bootloader and root it. Rooting my S5 took mere seconds literally.

This phone is worth the price.
My only issues are that I find the vibration pretty weak barely feel it whilst phone is in my pocket. The camera is decent but doesn't match the IQ of let's say the Note 4 for example but it's adequate for what it does and sure software can help improve it when lollipop is out. Other than that my phone has been solid. The battery life is excellent probably the first device I've had that can last me the whole day with plenty in the tank left over. The screen is nice I'm used to AMOLED devices but I like the screen on the OPO too at least it won't suffer from any burn ins and such. Music playback is good and plenty loud for me via headphones. The speakers are decent being on the bottom rather than the back is useful. You have a very active development on the phone at the moment if your into flashing custom roms and such, CM11S itself is decent but as you are aware of the recent CM issues with devices purchased in India. Lollipop is due soon and the phone will be even better, I've tried the recent unofficial built and believe me it's even smoother than Kit Kat! All in all for the price you can't do any better it's a solid device for the amount paid and I love the slick design of the phone.
^^^ +1 agreed

Thanks for the detailed review buddy.
I am too used to AMOLED screens, it will be my 1st experience of IPS display when I order it.
What I read that we cannot use headset during a call, is it?

OPO is best phone I have owned, especially considering the cheap price. Customer service though is abysmal, from what I have read. So better hope your unit will not be a faulty one... Mine has worked 100 % perfectly so far.
