[Q] Lollipop feels unpolished - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I bought my Nexus 5 6 months ago, everything went buttery smooth. Google apps , third party apps, everything. Changing things to ART brought even a better improvement in performance. But after the Google apps recieved material design face-lifts , every thing ran ... sluggish and quite laggy. Moving between app sections was stuttering , scrolling aswell , and every "material design " animation lagged. I truly hope that this will change with the 5.0 update. But my God, I think things started to run worse, especially when I have low battery. No performance improvment , no nothing.
Am I the only one facing this problem? I don't find it normal for the Nexus 5 to act like that. It's just a year old, and when the Nexus 4 got android 4.4.4, it ran like a champ! What happen with the " you can run android now on 512 mb ram ", or the promised "60 FPS animations" ?

I've been running stock today and dev preview for a few weeks. Can't say I've noticed any lag.

Have you tried scrolling in the Google Calendar 5.0 ( schedule mode )

It's not Lollipop. Everything is smooth for me. Even schedule mode in calendar.

Not sure what you are seeing. But its like butter for me. Best update ever. I doubt I'll hardly mod it. At all.

Odd, my n5 is very smooth with lollipop

This is really curious , because my experience is really bad with it, and I don't know if the problem is hardware based ..

If it makes you feel any better, I too notice the lag in Caldender. Just scroll quickly. It has slight chop in the animations. Besides that, and a few other small things it's fairly smooth.

It's not unusable or something like that, but it bothers me , because the animations are not so heavy..and it should run kinda lagless like kitkat.
I really hope google will update the apps and make them smoother.

Lag in calendar, when you scorl up or down. Huge lag, when i play youtube music in backround (Bad App, or Lolipop? I think bad app). Lag is and will be there, if you want to see it. :silly:

Lag everywhere. I flashed 4.4 kitkat and it works perfectly fine. not the same with lollipop wich lags in every bit of the system when it's used more than 10 minutes. really disappointed

Then something went wrong with your install. Otherwise, everyone would be experiencing this.

it's just super weird. it has moments when it works like a champ, but if my battery is lower than 10% and I'm plugged, everything goes ludicrous.
EDIT :
I tried every method, factory images install and manual install, all multiple times.
It's one of google's most unpolished updates. No dedicated gallery app, no face unlock, no new sounds, sluggish google apps etc. I am a big google fan , but I find my self disappointed.
I'm waiting for app updates and wishing for the best.

Does the status bar and nav bar change colors? I don't know if the battery saver mode activates at 10% automatically since I never let my phone get that low. But if it does, it disable all animations and does become less fluid.

You are not alone.
Animations and scrolling are in fact slower in Android 5.0 than in 4.4.4 by a large margin. You must be blind not to notice it.

no, I know that when battery reaches 10% or 15% it slows down the processing power and eliminates animations.

yes, it usually goes "wild" when I have low battery and it's charging, and that means animation lag, 1-2 seconds for the keyboard to open etc. in rest..well it's acceptable, it's not , from my experience , as smooth as kitkat, but it's usable and ok.

Haven't had any lagging issues, in fact this runs smoother then kitkat did, quite happy with the upgrade to be honest. There is always going to be bugs to be worked out, wouldnt be surprised if we see 5.x.x within the next 2 months.

there are 2 camps. the one who say it work ok and the opposite.
I don't think I have flashed it wrong.
It reminds me of the moto 360 problem. Same as now, some said it's choppy, some said that it's fluid and they had no problem

Anyone who says Android 5.0 not laggy is lying, sorry.
Animations must be instant from a perspective of allowing further instant interaction. Let me explain: when something is being animated the resulting screen must allow interaction as soon as you initiate the change in user interface. Right now in Android 5.0, animations are done such a way, you cannot do anything until animation has completed its transformation - and that's called a lag, a perceived delay in user interaction.
Hopefully Google engineers visit these forums and this problem is going to be fixed in future Android 5 releases.

Scrolling stutters a bit

Hi guys,
Not sure it was there when I got my 32Gb Note 10.1 or not. I updated it to the latest software version early on. I don't have that many apps installed on it and only a couple of widgets on the desktop. The scroll stutters at times when I start scrolling: it starts off fine, then stutters for a short time, almost like a single hick up, and then continues just fine. It's doesn't happen 100% of the time but is more consistent as of late. I observed it going from screen to screen and in the main browsers scrolling through the page. I restarted the tab, closed running apps/services, which made no difference.
Has anyone noticed anything similar to that? Does that sound like a normal behavior? Have had a few Android phones before but this is my 1st Android tab so not sure what level of performance I should expect. Thanks!
Have not experienced any stuttering. The only time I have noticed the SGN10.1 stuttering is when drawing shapes in s.note. then it can get a little bogged down.

Try going to settings, developer, and under window and transition animations. Try setting to.5 or zero.
That should fix it.
I was using HD Widgets and had a 8x1 clock/weather widget on my first home page. I was playing with the stock clock/weather widget and by removing the HD Widget's clock the stuttering improved a lot. I'm still using it for some toggles and that seems fine. If anyone is using HD Widgets you can remove the widgets you're not actively using and that seems to speed things up too.
i have a 3 day old 16gb wifi gnote. my experience with stuttering has been unmistakable in 2 places: general system animations (moving between screens or opening settings for example) and a laggy stock browser.
when i swipe home screens, i get similar stutters as the OP. so i went ahead and cleaned up all the stock (bloatware) widgets... hardly a solution but i hope it isnt a problem when i do install useful widgets soon.. someone suggested reducing animations to 0.5x or 0. well thats really sad for a higher end tablet i think. similar stuttering scrolls in gmail and play store.
with the browser, i usually get stutters when scrolling a fairly heavy page. the most annoying thing is that if there are many images on a page, the browser blanks them out when scrolling and then redraws them at the end of scrolling! so i simply installed chrome instead... and thats working better
i also tried this game called wind up knight just to see some 3d action... there too the stutter was quite obvious.
im not blown away by the quad core awesomeness out-of-the-box i must say. i think my 2 year old HTC HD2 (1ghz single core) is generally faster at running ics. i hope custom roms are able to better harness the hardware...
forgot to mention that i am running the old UEALGB rom

So what exactly does this do?
I am on my second g note. Got rid of the 16 GBP for the 32. The only thing I have done on both was got rid of the widgets it came in stalled with and adj the settings and it flies like butter.
Someone else mentioned the power saver mode. Check that it is not on.

No power savings mode. I suspect some of you just not noticing it. I do have an eye for those kind of things though.
i didnt have my power saving mode on... the problem became extremely irritating with that feature on...
however i did restart my tablet and that did solve almost all my worries! i too now have a "buttery smooth" tablet before restart, my ram usage was around 1.4gb and i suspect around 70+ active apps in memory. after restart, my ram usage was 0.4gb and all the lags and stutters went away! so one possible solution could be for you to go to task manager and clean out active apps from memory. then check if there is any stutter in general usage. hope this helps!
ps: i did clean out all my home screen bloat widgets. so i really cant say how smoothly they will scroll after cleaning out the ram.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply anything. I do appreciate all the help and feedback from all xda members.
I was just basically reflecting on my nature and the fact that I do tend to concentrate on details sometimes. So, my point was that there may or may not be lag there and perhaps I'm just "seeing" things. I have a good eye for these things in general, so assuming lag or more like stutter is there, the next question is whether that's something particular to my tab or others are seeing it too. If later is the case than it could be software and/or hardware issue. I thought the specs this thing packing it should have no problems scrolling silky smooth. Don't wanna jump to any conclusions just yet though...
Tried reducing animation scale but it made little difference. Wondering, just for comparison, has anyone seen Note 10.1 scrolling videos posted out there?
Thanks!
I agree it does stutter slightly. If you are reading an article and are scrolling down as you read, its not smooth. Hopefully they will fix it.

Thanks for sharing! Anybody else ran into this as well?
Actually, now that you mention it...
When i first received the tablet, i noticed the lag swiping from screen to screen. I shut it off after about 15 minutes, to charge the battery faster when the unit is off. After rebooting, i noticed it seemed to go much faster....
Also, after installing the update (which may or may not be available anymore) my overall smoothness went up about 100%, something i noticed immediately.
Doesn't stutter for me anymore, unless i have power saver mode on and really pushing it. Asphalt 7 (looks somewhat hi-tech 3d graphics, maybe not) runs exceptionally well, so i am not sure i'm getting the lag anymore. Maybe this is what some of the reviewers saw at first, while doing their first 15 minute review?
I can't complain anymore because it seems to be fine on mine, with the exception of this XDA app

Trying to get a sense if this is a widespread issue with almost every GNote or with just a small number of tabs. If first is the case then it can probably/likely be addressed via some software update. But if it's a later case then exchange is in order. I have no way of reliably validating it so I'll probably gonna go for an exchange early next week.
Anyone has some Samsung feedback linky handy, other than FB, by any chance? Thanks.
Not to hijack my one thread... but I have a new problem develop last night: some parts of the screen, left side in particular, in the standard browser weren't responding to touch/clicks. Tried clearing out all apps, restarting the browser, etc. Didn't help much. Seems to be better. Not sure what's going on.

Painfully slow animations and constant microlag

I can start of I am coming from an LG G2, as we know G2 despite being little bit older is still today one of the fastest devices out there, with none microlag and very very fast animations.
So you can imagine the contrast was so big going from G2 to Mate 7. I did read reviews before buying this device that it was very fast and not laggy at alll..fast GUI.. CPU performance seemed also satisfied. I knew before I bought this device that the GPU performance and Camera was the weaker point, but especially the GPU. But I thought damn it is 2014, so it better be fast... the experience I have after been using Mate 7 for about a few days that the it is anything but fast and non laggy, I think the Mate 7 have constant microlag, the microlag is a big problem, but the biggest problem for me is the painfully slow animations!!!, all the animations especially when switching between apps, such as kik, skype, whatsapp, outlook, these animations are so painfully slow that is not acceptable! I am not lying but the G2 felt twice as fast. In current experience I feel like I have bought the wrong device, but Like the screen it looks better then expected (JDI made) I also like the screen ratio.
But the fact that the deceive is to slow make me very unproductive, and makes me think almost twice before switching and opening new apps.. with My G2 I did not have that in my mind at all I just pushed at all buttons without thinking about it and evertyhing the go very fast and smooth and fast transitions
My questions.
1. The painfully slow animations and microlag, is this realistically fixable with software ? or is the very weak GPU chip
to blame for this ?
2. What can I do to speed up animations and reduce the constant microlag and make drastic performance boost ? My philosophy is if your GPU can't handle all the animations then do not have them to begin with, but the truth is the phone looks like **** without them, I did actually turn them off in developer options but it looks so boring that it is hard to live with it.. the standard setting is 1x I leave at the and putting my hopes in future software updates.
3. Any news regarding Lollipop ?
Go to about phone option in settings and radio the build number 5-6 times.
Now go to developer options, scroll down and turn off the window transition animation scale and animator duration.
Hop e this helps...

Hello, as I did write, I did try to turn them off, but animations is essential, it is is important for a device to be fun to work with, turning them off looks the system looks very boring and non inspiring. Chaning the duration scale to 0.5x did help very slightly....is still very slow.. but I can understand if people getting used to the slowness but side by side with a different device it is very slow.. and the slow animations is to blame.. and every app use animations.
It seem like this, that until the app is loaded in the memory it is slow, the transition to open apps is very slow..
but the way you are using a smartphone is you close and open apps constantly, cause you have a lot of different messaging apps for instance you switch between them constantly.
I have the animations turned on and they are as fast as top-end devices in the market. And I am experiencing no lag at all. I have the 2GB version

So you can actually say you have a 60 FPS all the time ?
there is only 60 fps when you are at home screen but when opening and switching to app it is far below 60 fps..
I hope they get it fixed...
When the new update come I will do a factory reset also..I know that sometimes it can help..
Does any one know when we can expect a new update for European market ?
I am also disappointed after a few hours with the Mate 7 with 16GB. Using especially Chrome and there for example theverge.com the scrolling through the Website is often stuck, the overall performance is not so great I think.

yes... especially the multitasking function is slow..takes way too long time before all the apps are presented to the screen which make the whole function slow to use.
But also animations and transisitations in general are slow, they are not 60 fps... and there is such a big difference between 60 fps and slower, it as another experience, where you do not need to think twice before opening an app or using the phone cause everything is so fast that you do not need to think twice about things..

Besides the form factor and screen to body ratio G3 is simply not a good phone, especially the screen is terrible and very dim, I would not be able to live with that since I want a more bright display. This should work. other phones has their performance settings on default high, mate 7 use power saving mode as default.

Why does my Z3 have such poor performance

I came from using an iPhone. The things I loved about iOS were the smoothness of the operating system (especially the animations and scrolling in apps) and the nice slection of apps that is available. Now I was up for a new phone last month and after serieusly considering the new iPhone 6 I decided to give Android another go. I really liked what google had done with android 5 and the new apps coming out were much more to my taste. I tried several phones in shops and my wife's One plus One. To my surprise the one plus was very smooth most of the time. Scrolling was finally almost without lag and it felt nice enough to use.
Now I decided to go for the Z3 as I loved the phone itself. As it has the same insides as the oneplus I assumed it would be just as smooth. It isn't. Its a lot more laggy and that is especially the case when scrolling in various twitter and rss apps. I annoys me to the point where I read want to ditch the phone.
I have tried several factory resets and even flashed the stock firmware (old and new) via flash tool. Whatever I do it doesn't seem to help. Why is the one plus (and the nexus 9) so much smoother than my Z3 when I use them side by side. Is there something I could try to improve this? Maybe performance will improve when we finally get Lollipop? I am at a loss.
Just a thought, but under Settings > Power Management > STAMINA mode, do you have Extended usage turned on?

I have. But I only when have stamina mode turned on when I don't use the phone for long periods. Otherwise it is turned of.
Try turning it off and reboot your device. Normally the Z3 is working buttery smooth without any lag or stuttering. When activating extended usage the phone should display a message advising you to keep the setting turned off if it causes too much performance issues. In my experience, once you turn extended usage on, it kind of remains active in the background until you actually reboot the phone, even if you turn the setting off. I also find that the performance loss coming with the extended usage setting is out of all proportion to its power saving abilities.
Tried but that has no effect. Still way less smooth scrolling through fenix timeline than scrolling through exact same timeline on my wife's one plus. Really strange. Games are comparable but scrolling in all apps is just poor.
what firmware are you using? before the latest update mine was a bit laggy, but even with extended stamina mode enabled all the time now, phone is super quick.

Tried reflashing it twice with full factory reset and still no improvement. I will say it is slightly less laggy though than it was on the previous firmware. Maybe its just i am used to IOS. But what bothers me is that my wife's Oneplus is much smoother while that has the same hardware,.

what apps do you have installed? my z3 next to other peoples iphone 6's and s5 etc, seems lightning quick, again with extended stamina enabled. maybe you have a rogue app or an app running in the background killing your resources?
No looked into that. That's not the problem.
Maybe the title of the thread is misleading. I agree the Z3 is snappier than an iPhone. That's pure speed though. What I am talking about is smoothness. Particularly when scrolling. That's when the laggyness is most noticeable

i never really thought about it before, but maybe because i am using apex launcher? are you able to try another launcher, do you get the same thing?
do you have any dev options enabled?
I use Nova Launcher. The launcher is fine. Its scrolling inside apps that is the main problem. And occasionally elsewhere in the os but going through homescreens is smooth

ok so its the apps that cause the problem then. how about the dev menu, do you have any options in there enabled? if so which ones.
Only Verify apps over USB and USB debugging.
hmm, not sure what else to suggest looking at. maybe someone else will have an idea? something is clearly not quite right though. have you tried using cpuz to see what your cpu is doing? do you get fullspeed on the cpu?

Just checked. It seems like the CPU is working fine though there are a lot of spikes when I only have cpuz open.
I think I will probably just wait and see what lollipop has to offer in a month or so and if it doesn't improve I'll likely switch back to an iPhone. Maybe my priorities are just in the wrong place for android.
Have u tried using any other Z3's as a point of reference? The comparisons that I've seen btwn the OnePlus & the Z3 seem to state near identical performance re: ui smoothness & stutter free scrolling, etc.
I, for one, have no such issues with my Z3 although I may not be comparing the same apps with which u speak of? I'm using Nova Launcher & the lollipop theme.

Unfortunately I have no way of comparing another Z3. All the apps that I use are not installed on the demo models in shops. I have been using my wife's oneplus now for 24 hours and the difference is immense. I would say it is almost completely lag free. A lot nicer to use. Such a disappointment for me as I really wanted to like the Sony more than I do. I now also notice that I very much dislike the glass back.

First thing
Please don't compare iOS to Android..they are both very much different platform and iOS manages memory very much efficiently and also their hardware platform is completely different from other companies.
Now About OnePlus > it uses CyanogenMod which is modded to work more efficiently than pure android or any other skinned android like SenseUI, XperiaUI or TouchWizUI.
Nexus 6 uses pure android which is way more light then other UI so you got the answer maybe why our Z3 lags...but i dont mind a little lag here and there..its quite normal its a phone after all..
My mom has the iPhone 6, I can't say its any better than my Z3 in function but the Z3 has a much much better battery life and is as smooth as the iPhone 6. Maybe you have an errant app/s, try a factory reset is nothing works. Most people who switch to Android from iPhone seem to prefer HTC Sense UI, my dad bought the M8 for that very reason. The Z3 is pretty close to stock and almost as good as Sense in my opinion and is stutter free in use.
I don't know about CM being more efficient because some review sites like GSMArena found the colors OS version of the Oppo phone to be better performing and having slightly better battery wise. CM is less cluttered compared to OEM garbage and has more useful options though.

I would want to agree on that...my friend... Completely true...

Phone is laggy, any ideas?

Hey guys, I bought my A9 yesterday, it would be a great phone, but scrolling is laggy. It can even stutter for a bit in Settings, not even mentioning some websites and apps. And multitasking doesn't work at all sometimes. I just went to the phone's settings from a very simple website with no pictures for 10 seconds, and it reloaded. Sometimes it works better.
It must be the optimization right? I'm already running the latest firmware available for my phone, but it was released in, like February. Comparing to my previous SD800 phone, it opens up apps the same time etc, but these two bugs ruin the user experience for me, I don't think that the SoC is that much weaker. Is there a faster, previous firmware to use? I immediately updated after setting up the phone. And since I've read many feedbacks that said there aren't any lags, I thought something is wrong on my side.
Thank you for any suggestions.
Hi man, restart thé phone recover 90% problem
But when I have the same lag, I use "high performance MOD" in devlopper setting for 5 minute and the lag gone.
Thanks, but is this tolerable with a high price phone like this? I mean, it shouldn't act this way. When I use the phone from idle, it opens up things pretty fast, without a lag. But when I'm using it as I should (not killing apps, etc), it goes a bit crazy, even the lock screen animation lags.
my htc A9 speed test.

Question Why does MIUI 13 (Android 12) feel so sluggish and generally-speaking slow on X3 Pro?

Hi everyone,
I was thrilled last night when my X3 Pro showed an upgrade to Android 12-based MIUI 13 was available. I downloaded the thing (all 3.1 GB of it...), install went without a hitch, ditto reboot, but I'm severely disappointed so far.
Everything feels slow and sluggish, even with the power slider set to Performance and the screen refresh rate pegged at 120 Hz.
Navigation in the Settings menu is OK, but all the other applications are slow to react. Scrolling up and down my Twitter timeline doesn't feel as snappy as it did before, when I was still on MIUI 12.x and Android 11.
Have any of you noticed the same thing? Did Xiaomi jump the gun with this update? I know Android must rebuild some system and application caches after each upgrade and all, but still, this doesn't quite feel right.
The only good thing is the battery life, which seems to have improved a bit, but that's all. DevCheck shows CPU peaks at 2.4 GHz under strain, but the Kryo core that's supposed to clock at 2.9 GHz never seems to wake up.
Did Xiaomi underclock the CPU the way Samsung does sometimes, to preserve battery life? Like I said, something's not right here...
Why do you even MIUI in the first place ?
I had the same. Only the factory reset showed the miui13 claw on Android 12. Tetaz everything runs smoothly. The battery holds up better.
I'm not inclined to do that just now. I've got tons of music and stuff on my phone and I really don't have the time at the moment, but push come to shove, maybe I'll have to do it.

Should i factory reset broh my miui updater was not working and everytime it was downloading corrupted zip so i downloaded it from the web with exact same name of the zip file from xiaomi server and updated in miui additional update.

Just updated my X3 Pro about an hour ago and I'm totally disappointed. It feels heavier and slower to respond overall. Apps like Twitter, Telegram, and Instagram seem much slower and laggy and stutter when scrolling. Twitter in particular runs like disaster. My phone was buttery smooth and did not have any lagging issue even when I tried to create one before this stupid update!!! Should I factory reset or wait for another update or something guys?

Mine is slowly getting there, in terms of ease of use and overall smoothness, so I suppose it's a matter of Android reconstructing apps and system caches after all. It's not quite as smooth as it was under 12.5.9, though, and some "features" are mildly annoying, like the fact that I have to tap the Return to home button twice to actually close some apps (but not all of them). It's hard to tell if the app itself is causing this or if it's an Android 12 trait.

I'm also seeing some improvements over time! Totally agree with you! It's getting better as things get reconstructed and stuff but STILL it feels slower than the snappy phone it was before the update. Seems we need to be patient! I don't think a factory reset is worth the time and hassle now that things are showing signs of getting back to normal.
I totally agree. I resort to factory reset only when necessary, with a gun to my head and a knife to my throat...
Let's give it a week or so and we'll see; After all, it's a big upgrade: new MIUI version + moving from Android 11 to Android 12.
Time will tell, but I'm relieved to see it's not my imagination if the phone feels slower!

Agreed! Yup, it definitely is slower to my eyes too. It's no imagination. Sure, it's a BIG update and many enhancements and fixes are to follow in the near future!
Everyone decides for himself what he wants to do. I just wrote that after the update, the phone was stuttering and restoring the factory settings made it run faster and smoother as on miui 12.5.9.0 and it heats up less
Its 2022 and people still dont get that its good to do any major updates on clean phone or do factory reset to remove any issues, official or not, its just how android work really :/
People always had such issues and they probably will have them in the future.
Its not like your life depend on getting new software, so just update later when you have some free time to do clean install or do factory reset.
It remind me of installing custom ROMs when you get feeling that its smoother. Well most of that speed came from having clean system, and after month or two you loose some of it. Here you have clooged system with your stuff and app cache, and you throw on top new OS... you will get some issues...
You guys should know that it is highly recommended to reset during a major Android update if you don't then don't be surprised by weird bugs.
its the common rule, when you are updating any rom on any device, its proper to factory reset and built from then.....i believe its a dirty installation even if you factory reset-install rom-restore data from recovery....even that it will give you some errors....noticed last time with a11,restored from backup ,and the time between restarts,is way to more.....
I have the same problem. I updated it on March 16 (Wednesday) and it's obviously buggy and slow. Google discover on the home screen was so unstable I had to remove it altogether. Phone lags in being unlocked by fingerprint, and locking it with two taps is done without any animation. Gallery is un-usable too as it's become to slow and it stutters. The game boost slider in games is un-usable as it interferes with the game so I've disabled it. I am NOT happy with this upgrade.
Battery might've improved but I suspect they've sacrificed the performance.
just install a custom rom

You can read. After all, many people wrote that after such a large update, and even more so, switching from android 11 to 12, it is advisable to do a factory reset and you will not have any problems. The fluidity will increase significantly and the battery will hold better. It's so hard to understand. The same is done when installing a custom rom.

Maybe work on your grammar and semantics first, and then talk about things being difficult to understand. It's common knowledge that a factory-reset is advisable after an upgrade, and it's not like you're imparting arcane knowledge by saying a factory-reset should be done. What is being discussed here are bugs encountered after an upgrade, and since it's android 12 it's expected that a factory reset shouldn't be needed.
Check your attitude, no one asked for help.
In my opinion, Miui's overall optimization on this phone is a disaster. In one year they haven't been able to correct the Google Discover's tremendous lag yet (I think they haven't even tried to). I have done a totally clean installation of Miui 13 Android 12 via fastboot (using miflash). I must say that the optimization now is even worse than it was before the update. The phone just feels slower. Of course we can use custom roms, but it is Xiaomi's responsability to do a much better work with their software.
I hid the notification and I will not update for a long time until I know that there are improvements to something, since the beta I read that the version has problems :/
