Lollipop Wifi issue - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys any help with this weird issue appreciated. Flashed the final stock binaries for the nexus 5 directly from Google. Installed fine but Wifi is having an odd issue
My access point is a Dual band Virgin media router this provides "2g" and "5G" channels at the same time. Neither channel appears to connect to... but here is where it gets odd.
3 other 2G routers are showing up in the street just no 5G which should also be present for each router.
So to summarize my router AWOL all other routers only showing with "2G"
Any ideas have reflashed and looked for a radio binary that may do the job no luck.
Confused! Flashed 100's of devices never seen this issue before am i missing something?

You mean you flashed the factory image? If so, did you do a full reset before booting up? If not, try that first as it's all fine for me (and I did a full reset)

Ok the fix is simple enough seem Android cant see above 11 channels, change your channel to 11 or under and it can see the wifi on 2G. still working on the 5g.

[Q] Wifi signal?
Does anyone get a weak wifi signal with their Nexus S? Whenever I connect to my at home wifi I never get full bars and something I'll just randomly lose signal. Also it seems to go pretty slow. I used to have the Mytouch4G and it work flawlessly with the wifi. Anyone else having this problem?

OMG yesss I do.
Just about a room away I loose signal, almost completely. = 0
IDK, but I see more flaws every day that passes
Mine's been working fine over Wi-Fi. I'm pretty glad it does too, because my only data option with it is Wi-Fi..
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
Wifi has been working great for me. It reconnects automatically and doesn't drop. The signal seems on par with my nexus one.
Speed wise, is it on par with the 3G network?
[Q] Wifi does not work anymore after rooting :(
So, I unlocked my Android 2.3.1 and rooted it ... But if I click on wifi so I could connect to my modem it says Error and wont even search or anything. I tried reseting too but still no luck .. What is the problem and how to fix this ??
That's odd, I didn't have any issues with wifi as I connected to Android Market to downloaded ROM Manager during my rooting process earlier. Have you tried flashing a custom ROM on your device to see if it'll fix it?
No I didnt, would that work? .. A friend told me to install a new "kernel" but I dont want to overwhelm my android with custom made kernels .
your problem is you used one of the quick methods of rooting your phone, which used a kernel that wasn't from the exact rom you have.
if your on stock 2.3.1, you will need the stock 2.3.1 boot.img, and then you'll need to root it manually the long way via adb command line. search the nexus s development section for how-to's. they are all there.
i too had this problem, had to install MoDaCo ROM to fix it, but i dont regret rooting, i now have custom rom and over clocked cpu on the nexus s
you have two options, either to flash NANDROID backup to un-root and return to stock or install a custom ROM, i choose MoDaCo bcoz of its UI, it looks and feels just like the stock one.

Yes, that's the point of MoDaCo roms, to make minimal changes to the look and feel of the phone, but to improve performance with his custom optimizations.
[Q] Nexus S wifi issue. Unable to access wifi from my nexus s.
Hi Guys,
I was able to connect to my wifi network for a day. I am using windows 7 machine as hotspot with connectify. From second day I am unable to connect to any wifi network. I did factory reset my nexus s but no results . Can some one help me how to solve this issue?
Observations:
*when i use static ip, It shows connected but the bars are in white instead of green color and i am unable to browse.
*When i use dynamic ip I am unable to connect to wifi. It shows obtaining Ip and never connects.
*In connectify when I was able to connect to wifi the device is shown with an android device name. but now the device is shown as unknown.

[Q] Nexus S Wifi Settings - force close
Hi all,
Just got a new Nexus S - all was well at home. Took it to work today and noticed something very odd. It was fine until entering the wifi settings menu - at which point it dramatically slowed down. I got two 'not responding, close or wait' messages before being able to join the network.... all other settings are fine - just the wifi area.
Weird - wondering what could cause this... too many wifi networks broadcasting (am in middle of London)...?
Anyone seen anything similar?

Too many WiFi around you shouldn't cause that.
Try rebooting and setting again if you haven't already.
Hmmm - rebooted and still have the same issue. At home, or even a block away from the office it all works fine. But in the office itself, although it connects and uses the wifi fine, the settings page is VERY slow to load and gives me the wait/force close message.
Out of interest - I also have 'wifi analyser' from the marketplace. This too is very slow and unresponsive when in the office.
So - it is definately something to do with the wifi here.... but have not got a clue what. Before I join the wifi, or when I am physically somewhere else it all works fine.
Wifi is WPA-TKIP, the key is a very long jumble of letters but surely that is not an issue.
Strange eh!!!

[Q] Possible WiFi problem?
Hi there, just bought a Nexus S, also used to have Nexus One.
The thing is for some wireless networks even though I enter the password correctly, it says connected and still there is no connection at all. (I mean browser tries to connect but at the end it says page could not be found) I even tried with an ad-hoc network that I created with my laptop but still the problem exists.
At home I'm able to my network without a problem. The type of network I'm trying to connect is: WPA2 Personal with AES. Is there any known issue about AES at Android system? Afaik there is no way to change the encryption used right?
this might actually not be a nexus S issue.
some modems/switches/routers are configured to block certain devices/applications/package's
we have a modem and router with both wifi.
but my psp/nDS cant connect to the modem, but can connect with the router

i have a similar problem. My Nexus S connects to my router only within a few hours after a router reset. Then it stucks at "obtaining ip" and never connected before I do another router reset.
My home wifi is WPA2 type, and for WEP type wifi my NS never got connected.

Finally solution to Atrix 2 Wifi problems

I feel so relieved today .. My A2 connection is rock solid for the last 3 hours.
I had tried everything before --- static ip , apps on phone etc to get rid of the intermittent disconnection issue. Nothing worked.
Solution - this worked in my case.
I flashed my Dlink Dir-615 router with DD-Wrt firmware.
I found a ready-to-eat guide for my particular model :
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=550652
So check if there is a dd-wrt firmware for your router too. If not , there are other open-source firmwares too like tomato etc
Finally I set my security to WPA2- EAS .. and reserved a IP for my A2
and have set this static ip in my phone to be on a safer side.
I realized the issue could be with my router , when i had no disconnection at my friends place.
However i will still continue to face connection issues at college after the spring break. Probably android requires very strict wifi protocol adherence, and dd-wrt follows everything.
Hope this helps fellow noobs
Thx. I also have another possible solution. Most of the time it is indeed a router problem. What worked for me was turning of all my other devices using Wi-Fi such as laptop and other things and connect my phone first and then turning on the other devices. Never had a problem since.

Wi-Fi issued resolved for Ubquiti Wifi router model Power ApN
I have a Asian MB865 unrooted 2.3.6. From day one I had difficulty connecting to my home wifi router a US brand called Ubiquiti for their model Power ApN. Tried many points to resolve. The issue was phone used to show connecting then dropping the connection immediately in a non stop loop. First thing I updated to the latest firmware for the router and changed network mode to "Bridge" and issue was resolved until then a new issue was randomly again the phone would not connect to the router & then would be ok again after 2 days. Frustrated I took screen shots comparing my earlier saved config file v/s the changed setting config file and narrowed it down to the point that the wireless setting Frequency Mhz was at Auto which I changed to 2452 mhz as fixed value and from thereon wifi is connected nonstop any time I want..
Hope this helps anyone who can make use of this info. Cheers!
PS - Moto help personnel would first tell users to reset to factory settings by default which is not required.
I am pretty sure a lot of these wifi problems are router related. My Atrix 2 on Lithium rom would lose wifi connection on a Netgear N300 router but when I changed it to a Asus WL 520GU using dd-wrt firmware, the wifi problem was gone. However I have noticed after flashing the deodexed international Indian rom, wifi is good with both routers, so I would give the Indian rom a try if you have wifi problems.

I am using an Asian MB865 unrooted and I posted only for info for anybody using the Ubiquiti POwer ApN router to illustrate how I sorted the issue. Appreciate your input though.
make sure ur router is using Channel 1-11.. as A2 can only detect channel 1-11... Happened to me twice when my router auto use channel 12 which my A2 could not detect my network at all...
Just a heads up....
but if you are running Wireless N on your router/AP.....
make sure your Channel Frequency is set to 20MHz only... not 20/40MHz .. this causes channel banding and many routers and devices do not properly support this due to lack of strong standards for its use.
Change said setting and reboot router (especially if it doesn't ask to be rebooted)
Also, always make sure to update to the newest firmware for your router... companies like Engenius and Cisco/Linksys patch many issues as they crop up and many times it will patch a problem you have.
Refer to the following article for questions on 20/40MHz banding....

wifi problem

hello every one
i have issue with my g3 wifi problem is in my wifi signal is full but when i want t o connect with facebook or download data for any game just loading and nothing happen and sometimes said losy connection i tried *#0011# and nothing happen but also wifi work great when download something from market or in browser
sorry for my bad english ><
thanks for all
Try to ensure that you are using the 2.4GHz channel for WiFi, if your router has that and 5GHz.
If you can pair with your router using the WPS button method instead of typing in the security key on your phone, I've found that was more foolproof in getting the phone properly authenticated with the router for network access.

Is this your router?

Also, when you connect your phone via WiFi to this router:
1. There are no network problems downloading with a web browser or the Play store
but
2. the WiFi network does not seem to work when an app wants to download data?
The Play store is also an app, so that is why I am asking for clarification of the error symptoms.
Are you running the "stock" operating system, or have you rooted+unlocked the phone to run a custom ROM?
- ooofest
This "ghost wifi" issue as I call it is happening on some devices/roms. I was on synergy r73 for quite a while and would have this issue, fully connected, no data transfer. Toggling on then off would repair it temporarily, but sometimes when trying to toggle, the toggle would just hang for about 15 seconds before shutting it off. Others have reported this too, your not alone. I am currently running Jellybomb which is based off of vrlg7, where as Synergy r73 is based on vrlg1 and I am no longer having the issue. It is possible that this is an issue with the baseband and not the rom as originally thought. You could odin to stock, take the ota and then try the whole thing over again and see if that works, or just flash a rom based on a more current baseband, not just flashing a radio. Again, I have no idea what the issue is, myself and others that were discussing it a ways back never had a clear answer to the issue, but so far what I just explained has worked for me so far.

2.4ghz wifi networks not working

Hey guys,
Flashed stock 5.0 on my nexus 5 using TWRP.
After the device booted up, i noticed it could only connect to 5ghz wifi networks and not 2.4ghz.
Any ideas why this is occurring?
Cheers
Same here
Yeah strange. I'll try re-install the stock ROM and see if I notice anything different..
Yes, exactly the same problem here. Funny thing is that I can see the network, but can't connect.
EDIT: So it seems there are multiple issues, found some bug reports related to what I'm experiencing:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=78702
https://code.google.com/p/android-developer-preview/issues/detail?id=1548
https://code.google.com/p/android-developer-preview/issues/detail?id=1620
Oh ok, I can't even see them. Do you get an error, or the phone just refuses to connect with an error msg?
On WLAN Settings there is a Menu called Advanced
There you can select if 2,4 GHz, 5,0 Ghz or automatically both.
Maybe after putting automatically you see them both?
I seet the WLAN, can put password, but it tries to connect and then stops connecting and always tries to reconnect from time to time...
Thanks guys! I worked it out. My routers 2.4ghz band was on channel 13, I changed it to 7 and it showed up. Don't understand why it couldn't see it before, but now it works! Hooray! Cheers!
If you're having troubles guys, try to tweak the channel on your router

And what if your network at work has above 11?
Then you can't do sh**... Seriously Google
Yeah, WiFi in 5.0 is major screw up. There are at minimum 3 major issues:
- 2.4 GHz band channels above 11 unusable
- https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=78702 (or https://code.google.com/p/android-developer-preview/issues/detail?id=1548 reported on developer preview)
And then there was that excessive power consumption related one - supposedly responsible for the 5.0 release delay.

Problem: 5GHz Networks not working ANYMORE

Hi all !
Here's the problem:
All my known 5G Networks disappeared from the WLAN Network list and i can NOT see them anymore after scan...
(several 5GHz Networks were working the other day)
I did two "unusual" things to my portable and dont know if one of those had anything to do with the problem as i was in a 2.4G Environment at the time...
FIRST i unlocked & rooted my portable shield using the method from https://github.com/linux-shield/shield-root
(basically just boot an image "root_shield.img" that installs SuperSU)
That worked great...
AND i played with a Measy / Miracast Dongle the first time and was amazed about the quality.
And then i realized at home that my 5GHz was not in th nework list anymore and did not show up on the list.
I tried factory reset --> no change, 5GHz net not showing in the list at first google setup....
Then i did cache/dalvik/data wipe in CWM... Same result.
Help, anyone ?
Ender
P.S. i AM using "Wifi Prority" App since weeks w/o problem, just mention it as it has "something to do" with WiFi
Bump,
anyone ?!
I tried a lot of stuff including resets again, no GO. No 5GHz anymore.
Please help if you can !
Ender
Can you please set a Wi-Fi transmitter to 5ghz only and give it a new, unique name? Once done, is that new, unique SSID visible to your Shield? This will help rule-out user errors and could tell us whether your Shield's 5ghz antenna/connection is malfunctioning or disconnected.
And, please unplug your 5ghz Wi-Fi router and let it cool -- approximately 5-10 minutes. I'd try letting it cool before you change its settings cause your issue may be related to heat.
Let us know.
I'm experimenting with different routers and currently take an Asus N56u with me on the road. Eventually all routers fail or develop issues because they are usually always-on, highly used and, most times, poorly vented.
Hi !
I am always using a dedicated 5G router with its own ID as i wanted to sort my devices to "needs fast connection" --> 5G and "just need WLAN from time to time" --> 2.4G.
And i WAS using that 5G router on the SHield before "it" happened and i am still using the 5G router on 3 Notebooks without trouble.
I also did restart it in the beginnign of the problem to make sure nothing "bad" accumulated.
Strange, right ?
Greetings & thanks,
Ender
If I were you, I'd backup the NSP and reflash the FW. After that, the bootloader will remain unlocked and you won't have to worry about unlocking it again. It will need to be rooted again though. But that's no biggie smalls. TowelRoot [v1] is a very quick and easy way to do this. Then make sure to install a program for managing superuser permissions (SuperSU is recommended). Then restore your app/data backup, and you should be good to go. But if this issue does indeed have to do with your router, then all that will be in vain.
Hi !
Yes, i already felt "drastic" when i cleared everything in CWM....
I guess i'll wait for Lollipop, should happen anywhere soon. Maybe that also fixes the strange problem.
Greetings,
Ender
Same thing happened to me. I unplugged my router for a couple of minutes, then plugged it back in. It fixed it for me.

lol log into your router and change the channel your 5Ghz is broadcast on. the middle channels dont work for me, so pick one on either end
@tooandrew:
Thanks, that was it !
It seems that my router (on Auto channel) decided one day to choose one of those middle channels at the same time when i rooted the Shield and so it looked like the root did something bad to 5G Wlan...
And the other Routers i tried (okay, only 2) must have been set also to those disabled channels... ARGH !
Does anyone know exactly which channels work on the portable Shield ?
Greetings !

I think it's basically anything that's not between 40 and 100.
I had the same problem. I changed my 5ghz network to channel 153 and the shield finally recognized it.
