Kitkat or L what do you prefer? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I installed L first time on my Nexus 4 I loved it, it was epic, I had it since first day it was ported, then I bought nexus 5 and installed it ,and I noticed that kitkat has faster Ui. L has weird rule which it opens something u click after the material animation is done which makes phone look slow plus it's so annoying and on nexus 4 it was perfect because it wasn't as fast as nexus 5, weird, I think I'm going to stay on kitkat :/

Tried the L preview and I switched back to KK for some app issues. When the final images will get released I will switch back to L though.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app

kitkat for me. it runs all my apps, has better battery and no 'puke on the screen' weird colours.
also i agree with op about the weird feel the lollipop preview has

46k benchmark with Android Lollipop stock rom and ElementalX kernel @2.6Ghz very fast at least as Kitkat. Using as daily driver and love it. Will stay with the preview and the Stock rom waiting a MahdiRom version of Lollipop.

I know, app opening is fast and fluid but when you go through Ui like opening about phone in Settings it won't open it until animation is done.

Don't face this issue. Goto developer settings and put animations to 0,5x like me to have fastest animations

you always have an option of making the animations faster, or turning them off completely. again, that is your choice to make.

no. you can go into settings, developer options, and make the animations faster, or turn them off. if you dont see developer options, go to about phone, and tap on the build number like 3 or 4 times.

In developer options, you can turn all animations off. Its not the battery saver mode. But I still find it hard to believe you had animation issues with 5.0

No the issue is that phone won't do task until the animation is done which makes phone look slow, on kitkat as you click it whites a bar little bit and goes in immediately.

Can't wait for slimrom on lollipop, imagine that speed.

Now I prefer KitKat its fast and smooth, I was using lollipop but after 2 days on, the multitasking was really bad, everything was closing even the keyboard so I downgraded to KitKat and I don't any problem.

Same. Missing loads of features on KK slim but its worth it. Smoother and faster. I. Even getting used to.lighter backgrounds and I like the material tones.
Good ROM all in all and can only get better.

MX Player beta still don't support lastest L preview.
I use VLCPlayer instead.

How similar is the Lollipop update to stock?

Does it have fullscreen music cover art on the lockscreen?
What was the main features which made you upgrade? The main one tempting me is the Move to sd option but its not quite a big enough reason to upgrade consdidering many apps can still do this on KK.
I'm totally on the fence about lollipop. I waited and waited on the update but now the thought of re-setting up all my zooper widgets and all the xposed modules i will lose I'm kinda putting off the upgrade.....
Plus I'm not crazy on the Material design.... i actually prefer the blurred/transparent look than bright colours and flat shapes. Blurred UI xposed module is a great little app that does this.
Can anyone tempt me to upgrade? Any nice features i don't know about? How is performance?

Agreed...
WiFi is working without any problems here...
UI is only what you see but it's not everything about UI, 5.0.2 is faster, smoother then KK and safer (all security patches and updates)...batery consumption is better optimised...
Xposed is working fine now and it won't be long while we get all modules we had on KK here on L.
There aren't reason for you that could force you to upgrade but that's logical step to do...
Try..if you don't like it, downgrade and stay on KK but give it a chance... I'm sure you'll change your mind

Samsung Beta Nougat Performance Open Thread

Because someone has to do it. Mods feel free to delete if it ends up being unnecessary.
My first opinion is that it is an improvement over the firmware the S7e came with, but is still missing simple features that the Note7 had built into the UI.

Agreed. I imagine those will be included in official since this has to replace the Note 7.
Honestly, I'm impressed for this to be a beta release. While not totally lag free, some areas are smoother on this beta than in the official MM firmware. Lots of new features

Its a completely new UI is the camera. It is similar to the Note 7, but it is different too. Its not the exact same. It does load WAY faster though and the shutter speed is super fast. Overall a great addition to the firmware.

Just found another new feature that is pretty awesome. You can adjust the DPI of the firmware in the developer settings. It is standard at 360, but I changed it to 450 (%25 increase) and now it looks WAY better. Nice feature for one of the things I use to always want root for.
Ok so first here is the screen shot of the adjusted dpi

Just gor my honor 8 phone today, great hardware but the GUI is ....

Any tip for a more clean userinterface and better costumization options.... i dont wan't animations, flashing, sounds, blinks and all bells and wissels everywhere and no whay to get rid of it.. i want a nice clean android the don't use 80% of battery and perfomance on useless ****.

@parra
You should've bought another device.
There are sounds and animations by default in cyanogenmod too, as on any other smartphone.
Latest cyanogenmod 14.1 (lineageos) doesn't even have support for theming yet.
That's everyone's issue with emui. Use these theme in this thread. Download and change .Zip to .Get then put them in local > theme
Open themes app and apply
Has no effect on location of buttons and layout
The sounds and animations are possible to be disable in every ROM! And they come active by default in every ROM!
So that's a "no-question"
The performance of the device, by default, is very good and you shouldn't have complains on that, specially if you come from an older device.
The battery is also pretty good, normally it lasts me a full day with some heavy use (not a lot of gaming, but there is no phone in the market that lasts long playing games!)
Besides the nice battery, the fast charge is great and very usefull!
But indeed, if you like to try and change ROM's, you bought the wrong device!
wait for emui5, you will love it..

Here is what I have to like about EMUI. While it is customized over stock android, it is also optimized very nicely to work with the Kirin processors and not to mention the dual-lens camera. From my experience, it is better than TouchWiz as TouchWiz gets slow as usage increases while EMUI is fantastic so far for me.
The sounds and personalization is in every stock ROM. If you wanted clean android, then you may have to pick Pixel but then again, Google themselves have said they are using a customized version of android in Pixel unlike Nexus. Again, that is a good thing as that helps OEMs (even Google) to optimize for the device.

Impressions so far:
- scrolling is noticably smoother, whether it's web pages or news content on the glauncher.
- battery seems to be better than Pie. The standby is definitely better, but I should note that I used a battery recalibration app right after updating (for the first time).
- the device seems to stay cooler under normal load. For whatever reason, it got hot doing some basic things in Pie and the battery life drained quickly.
- no bugs so far, all of my apps still work from what I can tell. Surprisingly stable for a first preview.

Enable: adb shell settings put secure ui_night_mode 2
Disable: adb shell settings put secure ui_night_mode 1
For now toggle is missing
May be 3 for gray ?
Dark mode is not worth yet. Cant use Google photos. And maybe few other apps which are not discovered yet .
Try battery saver dark mode and check if you can live with google photos (side menu, etc)
If you can then go for it.
Otherwise not even a single crash yet on android Q beta q. Its a good experience so far.
Can be used as Daily driver.

No not your device..., It freezes sometimes like once in a day but see its just a beta 1 i tend to ignore that 1 time a day thing.
And if you think its too buggy then try a clean flash or formatting your device once. It helps.
