[Q] Backup before bootloader unlock?

I am going to unlock my bootloader sometime next week (and root after that ofc).
I already used my phone for several weeks thought, I got it fully configured to my taste.
1. What exactly gets deleted when I unlock my bootloader?
All apps + usersettings + smses etc? Also everything in /sdcard ?
2. What is the best way to backup all data?
I can backup /sdcard alright, but is there a non-root app for backing up all apps + settings?
Helium is a non-root app backup option. You have to pair it with the pc program, but it leaves the backups on the phone. I don't know about what gets wiped, though, I've not unlocked my bootloader.

SnapPea can backup your texts, images, etc. Get the app from store & download the pc programme. You can also backup to the cloud (I think) Good luck!

There is a guide using ADB backup:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/general/guide-phone-backup-unlock-root-t1420351
Contrary to the guide, I didn't need an encryption password for it to work. I did however have to try it a few times before it would work (it stopped several times--failed), but got a backup eventually. It does reportedly work for the Moto G.
I haven't restored it yet though. I'm in the same boat as you are at the moment and I am preparing to unlock and root once I have all the help and supporting files for the process.

For anyone that is interested, the Helium backup app mentioned in a previous post utilizes this same ADB backup protocol cited in the link above in order to accomplish the backup. Helium just automates the process and slaps on a nicer UI.

That's good to know, cheers.
Apparently SMS messages aren't backed up with ADB. I've looked around and found this free app MyPhoneExplorer that can handle that part amongst other features. Seems it can backup locally.

Yes MyPhonexplorer makes a Backup on PC.

The Helium Backup is made on the phones storage. But sure you can copy that to your PC and copy it back afterwards.
Both apps are working nice without any problems.

Excellent. Now to the tricky parts...
On a side note, with ADB I was able to write the backup straight to PC, but I think writing to the phones storage would be more reliable, then copying it off.
I did not encouter any problems while just simply copying files to storage.

System Settings Saver App?

A link to a system settings saver app was posted in one of the development threads this morning. I'm trying to find the link but can't. If someone can provide the link to this app it would be greatly appreciated.
What are you trying to achieve? Backing up system settings and then restoring them after switching ROMs?
Yes sir that is what I'm trying to do.

Ok. There's a problem with that, you should never restore system data after switching ROMs, it can cause major problems. You can backup and restore user apps (with their data) without issues usually, but not system apps, or system data/settings.

What if instead I want to do the following?
I am not rooted, so I would like to find a way to do a backup of apps (and their settings) and of system settings, so that I can unlock bootloader (this will wipe everything) root and then restore the backup.
I am staying on he same exact rom, so i should not be a problem.
Is there a way to do so? Maybe HOLO BACKUP or something else?

Without root it's very difficult to make those kinds of backups. Helium claims to be able to do it, but only with user apps. I highly doubt you can backup system settings, and really that shouldn't be a huge problem, setting those up from scratch shouldn't take too long.

[Q] Removing GAPPS in COS12

I've been using cm12 nightlies for my oneplus one to fill the gap until 12s would come out. Now that it did, it adds a whole lotta useless gapps that i dont need and cant remove. Other than disabling/using TB/deleting system apk, is there a way to get rid of them? There are zips to remove google framework from cm (freecyngn), but I want any and all gapps to be gone. Is there a way?
I'm rooted/have philz

Completely removing system apps isn't the best idea as it'll break future updates, just freeze with Titanium.

its such a "work-around" solution though. Surely there has to be a way to do this directly through recovery/when flashing the rom?

I don't see how you find that a workaround solution. They're files, the universal standard for deleting files is via file management software. There's no way to do it via recovery, you could create a flashable script but that's the true workaround solution.

Yep. Or Titanium can remove system apps, it's a bit easier that way because they're all in one list. In the /system/app directory they're in sub-folders on Lollipop.

data/data folder is empty - Can't load app

Hi
I was trying to load an app (my banking app) and it simply shows blank screen.
I uninstalled it and then tried to reinstall it via google play but got -506 error message.
Googling this error, I came across a suggestion to delete residual files from data/data but /data is empty.
I'm using latest cm13 sultanXDA rom.
Please help!!
It's not empty. Enable root explorer and you will be able to see contents of data partition

of course I'm using rooted device and I use ES explorer to get to root folder, then data.
Use root browser then, I'm 101% sure that /data isn't empty because you would have a bootlooping device in that case!

I believe you... yet something is strange.. maybe SU is giving permission issues. I installed another root explorer and it said something about root permissions...
Well that's your culprit. Find the fix and you're done. You'll be able to see /data that way too

seems to be SU version which gave issues. I reverted to an older SU build and it's working now.
Thanks!!

decent backup method?

I've been using swift backup for the last 5 years or so and I'm damn tired of making the backup, coping it to my pc, do whatever I have to do on my phone, set up my gaccount back, install swift, login, copy the backup back and wait to restore it.
I just want a tool that allows me to connect my phone to my pc via USB, launch it and get my backup directly on my pc ready for restoring it in a second moment on my phone without waste of time or stupid accounts and stuff
I don't mind if it's via ADB, fastboot or whatever, I just want something simple that does just that and that is able to backup everything, all apps+ data
I know that ADB has a backup command, but that isn't able to backup all the apps and that's a big no for me
ps I'm a root user and I run Linux on my pc if those infos are helpful
am I asking too much maybe?
thank for your help!

most of the apps I use aren't compatible with ADB backup, I need something that's able to backup all the apps I want like I do on swift, but directly on my pc.
Your have root, why not use TWRP backup and restore.

yeah, there is a flag for that in the androidmanifest.xml
you can check
AFAIK since Android 6 the flag allowBackup by default is always set to true, unless app's developer for whatever reason sets it to false.
