Making Partitions on SD Card - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

There have been several posts recently on various threads suggesting making partitions on the SD card. Question: What is the purpose of this and what are the benefits?
At present, I'm running CM11 with few, if any, problems. Am currently only using about 1 GB of space on my SD card. I have 55 apps installed.
Thanks.

Well, apps and games are different. Games (and I play just a small few of the very many available) take up much more space. The other Galaxy S devices have only 512Mb flash, while ours has 1G. The problem is the other Galaxy S devices also have an internal SD card, where as SGS4G only has external SD card. Considering the fact that SDXC (SD cards capable of >=64GB) is supported (and I tested it the other day), we can move partitions like the data partition to the SD card.
The current used space on your SD card is expected to be low. Check the internal storage used on your phone.

Depending on usage, I generally have about 150-160 mb of free space in internal memory. If I make a partition, what should I push to it and should I expect increases in speed and/or performance?
Thanks.

Well, first of all, both the kernel and the android system image would need some changes made to support moving the data partition from the internal storage to the sdcard.
I think @FBis251 made a test image and reported that it might not have been as fast as he thought it would have been.
Many people have reported success with Link2SD app, and here is a link to one by @Rebel_X.

How to move programs to SD card not internal Memory?

Dumped my buggy not impressive Galaxy s 4g today> (love Costcos 3 months policy) and picked up G2x. So far extremally impressed!
One question is the Costco phone guy handed my the 16gig micro SD card from the Galaxy as he said he had extras from dead phones. I said THANK YOU! and installed. However when using AppstoSd program it only see's internal mem, and Internal SD 5gs. It does not see or give option to move to my 16g Sd card?
My HD2 and Samsung worked great with AppstoSD. Am I missing something? I mean I guess the 1.2gig and 5gigs of internal is enough. But I like to also use the SD card for programs to not overload internal memory.
I have not rooted yet, will do that so I can get my Titanium backup working to see it I can do it with that.
Thanks!

Been all over that thread. This issue and the "phantom AT&T bands are two big issues on this device. However, there may be some hope at the CM end - not this item in the latest CM7 changelog"

First thank you for responding. I am not a newbie but have been rooting and testing my Hd2's for past year. My first non HTC phone in awhile was the vibrant s4g, it had its own problems with very low internal memory.
So I was excited this phone had 8 gigs plus now my 16 gig card. I have not been on these forums so I did not know it was a known issue Sorry.
So to clarify, there is no workaroud? But can I not just use root explorer and move files to the SD card? I understand apps to sd wont do it automaticly. But I plan to put my music and movies at least on SD... What would even be the use of the manufacturer putting SD slot on phone if you could not use it?
Ira that is what I do. SD card = sdcard/external_SD
Or something to that effect. I plan to keep my apps2sd on internal and SD for straight storage and backups.
From the sound of it, the clockwork mod can access the microsd so at least backups will be off the device.

What I have been doing is the basic copy and paste. I copy the app or video ect. from the sd card and paste it on the ext/sd card. If there is a faster oor easier way please let me know. I am rooted and this is the first phone I ever had with this kind of a set up with the sd card. I prefer the other way much better ala Nexus One.

That is correct. In a file manager etc. you can locate your SD Card by going to the ExternalSD folder (path: SD Card/ExternalSD). The "SD Card" is actually the internal memory, and the "External SD" is the actual SD Card. When you plug your phone into a PC two different drives come up, one for the internal and one for the SD Card. From what I know you can't put apps on your actual SD Card. However music, pics, etc. all work just fine. I have all my music on my SD Card and everything else on the internal.
P.S. When opening the internal memory in a PC it will still have an ExternalSD folder, but it will be empty. I would advise not deleting it.
There's something like 1.5GB just for apps. What the heck are you doing to "overload" it??

GPS maps will easily overload the internal SD card. If they let the map location be set, that would fix it, but most do not (yet).

Save apps in SD memory card

Hi
Got a Samsung Galaxy i9000 S. I have a 32 Gb memory card. Is it a good idea to save Apps to it? I realise that if something happens to the card I've lost my Apps. However, I have had Smartphones with far less than the 16 Mb flash memory I've got now (I think that's it?) and saving too many programmes and Apps to the internal memory caused the phone to freeze. Since I have 32Gb of memory with nothing else but, songs I thought it may be a good idea. Is that OK?
Thanks

If you have sufficient free space on your Internal Memory just leave it be. I would only start thinking of Apps to SD solutions if you are running out of space and really need more.

Move apps to sd card?

I'm using a DroidX. What is the suggested ratio for free space to used storage? Should more free space be available on the phone's memory?
Should all apps be moved to card?
Thanks for your time.
Sent from my DROIDX using xda premium
I always like to keep some space free on the SD card for making backups and stuff, but that's partly because I switch ROM's quite a bit, so I need to make backups rather a lot.
The Droid X has a decent amount of internal storage, more than the Desire S, anyway. You'd probably be OK keeping the apps on the phone's internal storage, but if you have a good sized SD card (16gb +, I'd say), I'd probably move all the apps to the SD card.
I always try to keep at least 10% storage free, so if I'm away anywhere and want to take a bunch of pictures or HD videos, I'll know I have enough space.
I hope I've helped!
its better to move all your Apps If you have class 4/6/10 sd card then there will no performance issues and your internal memory will use less memory. try have atleast 50-200mb free of your internal memory for good performance..

Note 10.1 users, Is Apps to SD possible?

Hi, i use a Galaxy S3 and have used many roms but it's not possible to move apps to the sd card, is this the same on the Note? The reason i ask is because i need more than 16GB of storage for all my apps, if it is not possible i will buy the 32GB version if yes i will get the 16GB with a 32GB micro sd.

the same ordeal with the SGS3, so might as well get the 32GB
I believe that it is possible but only if you root your tablet. I am not positive on this so wait for someone else to verify what I am saying. However it seems that the difference between 16gb and 32gb is only $50 and that ain't bad in my opinion.
I have heard it's not possible with ICS. I hope I'm wrong.
There is no option to move apps to the SD card anymore.
Sent from my Galaxy Note
It's one of tablets thing.
Even with ICS you can't do that. Form side it better for fast and safe replacing of sdcards.
I have the note 5.3 with it I can add apps to the sdcard.

Well most (Batman, Amazing Spiderman and so on) games are about 1>2GB in size + many small apps i use + Sygic with maps of countries i have to visit for work on a regular bases (Belgium, The Netherlands, France and Germany), add to that you only get 11.25GB and my S3's memory is almost full.
I will have to wait for the 32GB/3G version it is not available yet here.

No broken apps, the ability is taken out in devices launched with ICS/JB, devices updated to ICS/JB still have the ability to move apps to SD it seems.

There should be no need for an app to be moved to SD. HOWEVER, an app SHOULD be able to have its data relocated - if it can't the app is broken.
No *app* is large enough to justify moving to SD. However, if an app insists on its data being in the same location and can't be moved to external storage, that's a problem.
In fact, most likely, those apps already have their data on the "SD" - the problem is that on devices like this, the internal SD is indistinguishable from /data in terms of storage usage. If the app doesn't support moving data to external SD, that's a broken app.

I know that since ICS the memory layout has changed, in previous (GB) devices you had multiple partitions on the internal SD now this is gone and so is apps (data) to SD.
I'm not so sure about the term "broken apps" because in that case it means all apps are broken cause of all my 100 apps and games there is not a single one that can allocate data anywhere except internal sd. Google messed with this since ICS, it isn't a problem on the Galaxy Nexus or One X because they don't have memory expansion.
After thinking about getting the 32GB with a unknown wait time, i decided to for the 16GB Wifi/3G version i will skip Sygic on the Note since i don't see myself with a tablet on the windshield driving.
This is why I returned my 16gb. I have the 32gb one on the way now. With these Androidand gameloft games, it ddoesn't take long to use up 16gb of memory. Which is really only 11gb out the box. My nova3 alone is like 2gb. So I need larger storage space for all my games n apps. The games are the ones taking up the most space.
But I think the op means moving the data to external SD/memory card. So it'll free up space on internal storage/internal SD..which is really all merged now. So yeah, games store their data to internal SD. But if you have a microsd card installed, there's no way to move the largest part of game data to it to free up space on internal memory. That's my take on moving apps to SD. I know of the older methods. Like on my atrix. Still on froyo. I can move apps from internal storage(which was limited in size) to internal SD(which was larger in size). Or even move it to external. Lmfao I'm confusing myself now.

Yes, there is a way. Use Apps 2 SD and GL to SD apps. I moved a lot of the huge downloads for my games using those apps.

this is one advantage ios has over android. you can actually download the games on your computers and sync later. or you can sync, delete and reinstall later without having to redownload everything (unless there's an update). you can kinda do this in android, but it's not as automated.
Get link2sd
Use link2sd to move apps to external sd
...
Profit...
Sure it would be nicer if it was all built into the OS, but I think it takes less time to get link2sd and solve than problem than it takes to complain... I have a 16gb pad, and a 64gb MicroSD split half as fat32 and half as ext4... all my large apps go into the ext4 partition... so even though I have more than 16gb worth of apps/games, my internal storage is almost empty...

Can you possibly explain this process in a bit more detail, and maybe provide some pictures? I'm ordering mine today, but if this is true I'll just save some cash (and heartache with the lack of 32s being available) and purchase the 16+ an SD card.

Oh and another note: how exactly does the storage work on this thing?

[Q] Internal SD Storage wrong readings

I was wondering why my internal SD card is giving me wrong readings. I am rooted using Unofficial CM10 latest version 4.1.2. from10/22/12
I never really checked my internal storage until recently i noticed i have only 3.79 gbs available. I know the phone comes with 16 gbs preinstalled and i know it isnt exactly 16 gbs. I plugged the phone to my laptop and i gave me the same reading. I checked all the folders individually and i only have 2 huge files each about 2gbs each and those are the CWM recovery folders. All the other files are basic files. I tried a full wipe; cache, factory, and devik. Anybody else have this problem? And any suggestions to address this problem?
There is not really a problem to address. Everyone's phone varies depending on several factors. All is well.

I was getting 10gbs at least because everything is on my external sd card. I was just wondering if somehow my internal sd card was messed up. Because I should have alot of space in my internal sdcard. I really think it should be more though
Are you running any backups, they take a lot of space.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda premium
I reformatted my SD cards put in the same things i had running, but now its showing up that i actually do have 9 gbs left of data. I did have one backup from CWM and TB on external SD
