How to move programs to SD card not internal Memory? - T-Mobile LG G2x

Dumped my buggy not impressive Galaxy s 4g today> (love Costcos 3 months policy) and picked up G2x. So far extremally impressed!
One question is the Costco phone guy handed my the 16gig micro SD card from the Galaxy as he said he had extras from dead phones. I said THANK YOU! and installed. However when using AppstoSd program it only see's internal mem, and Internal SD 5gs. It does not see or give option to move to my 16g Sd card?
My HD2 and Samsung worked great with AppstoSD. Am I missing something? I mean I guess the 1.2gig and 5gigs of internal is enough. But I like to also use the SD card for programs to not overload internal memory.
I have not rooted yet, will do that so I can get my Titanium backup working to see it I can do it with that.
Thanks!

Been all over that thread. This issue and the "phantom AT&T bands are two big issues on this device. However, there may be some hope at the CM end - not this item in the latest CM7 changelog"

First thank you for responding. I am not a newbie but have been rooting and testing my Hd2's for past year. My first non HTC phone in awhile was the vibrant s4g, it had its own problems with very low internal memory.
So I was excited this phone had 8 gigs plus now my 16 gig card. I have not been on these forums so I did not know it was a known issue Sorry.
So to clarify, there is no workaroud? But can I not just use root explorer and move files to the SD card? I understand apps to sd wont do it automaticly. But I plan to put my music and movies at least on SD... What would even be the use of the manufacturer putting SD slot on phone if you could not use it?

Ira that is what I do. SD card = sdcard/external_SD
Or something to that effect. I plan to keep my apps2sd on internal and SD for straight storage and backups.
From the sound of it, the clockwork mod can access the microsd so at least backups will be off the device.

What I have been doing is the basic copy and paste. I copy the app or video ect. from the sd card and paste it on the ext/sd card. If there is a faster oor easier way please let me know. I am rooted and this is the first phone I ever had with this kind of a set up with the sd card. I prefer the other way much better ala Nexus One.

That is correct. In a file manager etc. you can locate your SD Card by going to the ExternalSD folder (path: SD Card/ExternalSD). The "SD Card" is actually the internal memory, and the "External SD" is the actual SD Card. When you plug your phone into a PC two different drives come up, one for the internal and one for the SD Card. From what I know you can't put apps on your actual SD Card. However music, pics, etc. all work just fine. I have all my music on my SD Card and everything else on the internal.
P.S. When opening the internal memory in a PC it will still have an ExternalSD folder, but it will be empty. I would advise not deleting it.

There's something like 1.5GB just for apps. What the heck are you doing to "overload" it??

GPS maps will easily overload the internal SD card. If they let the map location be set, that would fix it, but most do not (yet).

install android on a wimno device without an sd card

I have the Sprint HTC Touch Pro (Raph800). My phone does not have a sd card slot. I have downloaded my android package, unzipped it to the root of my internal storage, but I can't get Android to load because (obviously, I have just now figured this out) I don't have an sd card. However, I saw some websites with instructions on how to install Android on the HTC Diamond, and those instructions said the Android files can be placed on the root of the internal storage (I'm assuming) because the Diamond doesn't have a sd card slot either. So I tried using the Diamond/Android package on my Touch Pro, but that didn't work either. After extensive searching I'm starting to think I'm just sol, but I'm confused as to why Android can be installed on the Diamond without an sd card, but not my Touch Pro. So this is my final attempt, does anyone know of any way to get Android on my Touch Pro without using an sd card?
I am not certain where you get your information and/or how informed you are about your own phone. I have a Sprint HTC Touch Pro (Yes, Rapheal) and can assure you it DOES have an SD Card. I do believe that the Diamond is no different and am sure that using the SD Card is pretty much the ONLY way to install Android. So, if they MUST have one to work...
Take off your battery cover and look on the side to find a pre-installed microSD Card. Push it in and release to remove it... I really don't know how you could not know that there was one there, Even WinMo is well aware of its existence and is well delineated in the OS.
different devices, same os. one has a keyboard and one doesnt lol. i don't see how HTC would be dumb enough to take off an sd card slot as well.
anyway, grats. I'm just snooping around the forums looking for an area i can help in.

You don't need an SD card.
I've got it on my Diamond which doesn't have an SD card, only Internal Storage.
You just download the Raphael Android package decompress it, put the files on the Internal Storage (make sure the defult.txt/startup.txt is the right configuration) and run Haret.

Well socialSavant, I am obviously uninformed about the phone or I wouldn't have had to ask that question in the first place. After all, this is a forum for lending and receiving help, is it not? However, thanks for pointing out to me that the sd card slot was on the inside of the phone. I didn't know it was in there and when I looked for it in the phone's menu all it was sd card not installed, so I wrongly assumed there was no sd card slot.
donald-c, thanks for the advice, but I already thought of and tried running the android package from my internal storage. It didn't work.
Now I am just going to go buy an sd card and try again. Thanks for everyone's help!

[Q] SD card swap...

I bought a new PNY 32GB Class 10 SDHC card and currently have the memory card in my HTC Sensation 4G that came with it. I'm sure I'll have to copy over all my pictures and music to the new card, but how will it effect things if I just pull out the old card and swap in the new one? Will the apps still run correctly or all be present, or will it cause conflicts with the phone for me to just swap it out? If so, whats the correct procedure? Thanks so much and I really appreciate any help!
Well, if you have applications on your SD Card, just move all of them to the phone memory temporarily (so that you can move them back again to the SD card after swapping)..Afterwards, you can safely remove your SD card by going to Storage--> Unmount Shared Storage..Finally swap the cards and move the apps back to the SD card again ..I don't think you will face any problem if you follow this method..
Hope this helps
If you just stick the other one in some apps will go. Especially all of the larger apps, all of them.

Note 10.1 users, Is Apps to SD possible?

Hi, i use a Galaxy S3 and have used many roms but it's not possible to move apps to the sd card, is this the same on the Note? The reason i ask is because i need more than 16GB of storage for all my apps, if it is not possible i will buy the 32GB version if yes i will get the 16GB with a 32GB micro sd.

the same ordeal with the SGS3, so might as well get the 32GB
I believe that it is possible but only if you root your tablet. I am not positive on this so wait for someone else to verify what I am saying. However it seems that the difference between 16gb and 32gb is only $50 and that ain't bad in my opinion.
I have heard it's not possible with ICS. I hope I'm wrong.
There is no option to move apps to the SD card anymore.
Sent from my Galaxy Note
It's one of tablets thing.
Even with ICS you can't do that. Form side it better for fast and safe replacing of sdcards.
I have the note 5.3 with it I can add apps to the sdcard.

Well most (Batman, Amazing Spiderman and so on) games are about 1>2GB in size + many small apps i use + Sygic with maps of countries i have to visit for work on a regular bases (Belgium, The Netherlands, France and Germany), add to that you only get 11.25GB and my S3's memory is almost full.
I will have to wait for the 32GB/3G version it is not available yet here.

No broken apps, the ability is taken out in devices launched with ICS/JB, devices updated to ICS/JB still have the ability to move apps to SD it seems.

There should be no need for an app to be moved to SD. HOWEVER, an app SHOULD be able to have its data relocated - if it can't the app is broken.
No *app* is large enough to justify moving to SD. However, if an app insists on its data being in the same location and can't be moved to external storage, that's a problem.
In fact, most likely, those apps already have their data on the "SD" - the problem is that on devices like this, the internal SD is indistinguishable from /data in terms of storage usage. If the app doesn't support moving data to external SD, that's a broken app.

I know that since ICS the memory layout has changed, in previous (GB) devices you had multiple partitions on the internal SD now this is gone and so is apps (data) to SD.
I'm not so sure about the term "broken apps" because in that case it means all apps are broken cause of all my 100 apps and games there is not a single one that can allocate data anywhere except internal sd. Google messed with this since ICS, it isn't a problem on the Galaxy Nexus or One X because they don't have memory expansion.
After thinking about getting the 32GB with a unknown wait time, i decided to for the 16GB Wifi/3G version i will skip Sygic on the Note since i don't see myself with a tablet on the windshield driving.
This is why I returned my 16gb. I have the 32gb one on the way now. With these Androidand gameloft games, it ddoesn't take long to use up 16gb of memory. Which is really only 11gb out the box. My nova3 alone is like 2gb. So I need larger storage space for all my games n apps. The games are the ones taking up the most space.
But I think the op means moving the data to external SD/memory card. So it'll free up space on internal storage/internal SD..which is really all merged now. So yeah, games store their data to internal SD. But if you have a microsd card installed, there's no way to move the largest part of game data to it to free up space on internal memory. That's my take on moving apps to SD. I know of the older methods. Like on my atrix. Still on froyo. I can move apps from internal storage(which was limited in size) to internal SD(which was larger in size). Or even move it to external. Lmfao I'm confusing myself now.

Yes, there is a way. Use Apps 2 SD and GL to SD apps. I moved a lot of the huge downloads for my games using those apps.

this is one advantage ios has over android. you can actually download the games on your computers and sync later. or you can sync, delete and reinstall later without having to redownload everything (unless there's an update). you can kinda do this in android, but it's not as automated.
Get link2sd
Use link2sd to move apps to external sd
...
Profit...
Sure it would be nicer if it was all built into the OS, but I think it takes less time to get link2sd and solve than problem than it takes to complain... I have a 16gb pad, and a 64gb MicroSD split half as fat32 and half as ext4... all my large apps go into the ext4 partition... so even though I have more than 16gb worth of apps/games, my internal storage is almost empty...

Can you possibly explain this process in a bit more detail, and maybe provide some pictures? I'm ordering mine today, but if this is true I'll just save some cash (and heartache with the lack of 32s being available) and purchase the 16+ an SD card.
Apps to Extsd
Use Root Explorer The paid version, works very well.

Oh and another note: how exactly does the storage work on this thing?

What's the point of my SD Card? (ExtSD)

So, I got a 32gb Class 10 card for my phone assuming that as with my old phone I'd use it for apps as well as some music and things. But with this phone Samsung gave it an "internal" SD Card which gets used for all the things my external card did on my Dinc. And there seems to be no way to change this.
So aside from Videos and Mps3 and some pics, is there really any use for the SD card on this phone?
FYI - not rooted or anything as of yet. I was rooted & running custom roms on my Dinc, but haven't seen much of a need on this phone.

Supposedly there is a way to force apps onto extsd but I don't know much about it.

I recently upgraded from a "tricked out, custom ROM" Dinc as well. I didn't root the SIII for the first couple weeks, but them little things, like the sdcard vs extsdcard for apps, no google wallet, no titanium backup, etc got the best of me and I rooted. You can certainly ulock the potential of your extsdcard by rooting.
Is there a guide available for forcing apps onto extSD?
Sent from Galaxy S III on Verizon (Unlocked Bootloader)
Set Titanium Backup to backup to ext-sd. Make your NANDROIDs save to sd-ext as well. If your phone is ever damaged (fall in water, fall on ground, etc) then at least you still are able to salvage the sdcard with your precious information.

32 gigs in the device native, 64 in the slot. 96 gigs of space ( - a bit ) I can't think of any reasons why almost 100 gigs of interactively accessable storage is bad.
What sucks is Instagram won't save to external, I've even contacted them about it and they still haven't done anything about it.

[Q] Micro SD card problem?

My SD card is a bit bugged recently. Basically, the SD card won't do anything such as accessing photos or music. Also, I tried moving some apps to my SD card, but that resulted with a "CONTAINMENT_ERROR" or something like that. Also, when I try to download apps, it says that there are no space in USB or SD memory storage. I know this is wrong because I don't have a USB storage, and my SD card is 1/3 full, so how can I fix this? I think that I require a formatting on my SD, but that's a last resort, with all my info on it. If that's the only way, please suggest this with an explanation.
If this helps, I remember killing some system processes such as some sort of signing thing which I believe is what signs the apps to install onto my phone. Please help me out here. Oh yeah, I can text and call fine as well as accessing the internet and wifi. Anything involving my SD card such as downloads, however, are a different story. Got suggestions?

Yeah, I tried formatting, but it doesn't seem to remove any data. I can move files to my cpu, but when i move apps to my SD card, or at least try, it says [INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_BAD_MANIFEST] Do you know what that means by any chance? The moving also says [INSTALL_FAILED_CONTAINER_ERROR] too.

I would be a bit concerned that you can't format the card. Its a good sign that the computer can read the card but not good that you can't format it. See if you can try the card in another smart phone and if you have the same issue its just a problem with the sd card.

SD card not letting me add or delete files
I've been spending waaay to much time trying to get this phone to work as I had expected with previous phones (even my LG G2x) giving me less problems. I recently bought a Sandisk 32gb, class 10 micro sd card and after transferring old music, pictures and videos from my old LG G2x with a 16gb card, placing files from my computer back onto my S4 with the 32gb card is a nightmare! Photos are transferred but too out of order to try and deal with although it's more the music problem that has me bugging. I have some success after putting about 3gb or so onto the new 32gb sd card but after that, the sd card flips out and starts using special characters for file names.. Below I attached a screenshot of what I'm going through with another app called V1 Golf for Android. I'm stuck and any help is much appreciated. I can't delete anything on my sd card nor can I add. I've reformatted this card about 4 times now without success. Some say that a Sandisk have been nothing but problems for them, you think a Samsung card could be the fix?
I just have one question for you guys. Are you using a Galaxy S 4G or the Galaxy S4? If it is the latter, please take your questions
here for T-Mobile
here for Verizon
here for Sprint
here for AT&T
and here for International
as this section is for the Galaxy S 4G. Thanks and good luck.
