Hello,
I am wondering what the difference is between getting a Nexus S and Mytouch 4g (or other android device) if I plan on rooting. Isn't it the case that if I root a Mytouch 4g with a custom ROM, that I will get a similar experience as if I rooted the Nexus S? What am I missing here? If some of the hardware specs are "better" on a device other than the Nexus S, why not just get that device and root/Rom/unlock it? I have not yet bought an android phone (currently rocking the 1st gen iphone on t-mobile unlocked and jailbroken) and want to get the best phone/android experience possible. Any clarification and help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!
Get the Nexus S. It is the true Google experience. Which is the unaltered Android experience, which I consider the best. It has an unlocked bootloader. You will always get your updates first, from Google, before any other phone.
The only thing that is 'better' about the MyTouch 4g is the well, "4g". It supports up to 14.4mbps, but you most likely won't even get that. Do a speedtest on the MyTouch 4g before buying it. If it's under 7.2mbps, don't buy it. The Nexus S maxes out at 7.2mbps and most people don't even get close to that even with 4g. Some people have claimed over 10mbps in certain areas, and I did get 10mbps on a G2 here in Pittsburgh, however 10mbps wasn't much more than the 7.2mbps that my Vibrant got at that time. So I sent the G2 back.
What else makes you think the MyTouch 4g is better?
Nexus S has a faster CPU, superior GPU, much smoother experience. Not to mention the gorgeous Super AMOLED which is also far superior. Oh and the 4 inch screen.
No sd slot though
No led notification light
No 720p recording
But still I prefer this phone to other non google direct supported phones

sorry for invading your topic, OP
but I have a very similar issue/question.
just like the OP, I'm not an android user yet, but I was thinking about getting a device with 1GB of ram and rooting it (Atrix maybe), will the system/experience be similar to that of the NS? ... am I going to feel different only when there is a new update or is the difference going to be all the time?

typically if you are going to root then it kinda doesnt matter anyway as you will be getting many updates right from the ROM dev anyway, like cyanogen. so really who cares about official google updates.
however i should warn that the motorola atrix likely will NOT be able to load custom ROMs, just like the droid x, if it comes with an encrypted boot loader. dont support motorola.

Oh! ... now that's some important information!
I think I'll wait for its release then and check what people say... I suppose that people will figure out if it's root-able or not very soon after the release, right?
Hello, I have a captivate with rogers at the moment and I have had enough with them. I am not happy with Rogers, their service is sketchy where I am. Bell and Telus have great service here, but I am leaning towards Bell because I have alot of other services with them, they have great coverage here, and It would seem they have the most attractive phone to me.
I am looking at the Motorola Atrix that will be released here soon, Is this a good choice ? What I would like in a phone is a dual core processor, 1GB RAM, and at least 16GB internal storage.
I know Samsung is coming out with a 4.5" phone that fits the above and the bigger the screen the better for me! But I have no idea who is going to carry it, when it will come, etc.
Is the Atrix a good phone to go to ? should I wait till there are more dual core options here in Canada ? are there any other ones announced with an arrival date ?
Thanks guys.
I've heard that the atrix isn't as impressive as it seems, but Samsung is slow at updates.

I don't know too much about the canadian carriers, but I just went through a similar phone switch on AT&T. I looked at the atrix, as well as the HTC Inspire HD (aka HTC Desire HD).
I'm not trying to convert you away from the Atrix, which is probably a great phone, but I eventually chose the Insipre for the following reasons:
- Solid build quality (The Inspire Snapdragon is a safer choice than a first gen dual-core for me, considering the good benchmark scores of the Inspire - easily good enough for me for awhile). For some reason the Atrix plastic cover and design seemed dated to me (but I generally like HTC's hardware designs anyway, and I like the extra weight in the device).
- HTC Sense > MotoBlur (both in style, and performance), but since I'll probably run custom ROMs it won't matter to me all that much (and for style, I'll probably end up with LaucherPro, ADW, etc as a launcher anyway).
- The Inspire boards seem to have a decent amount of Dev support on their side, though I'm sure I will really sadly miss Designgears wonderful work (pretty sure he's got an Atrix). Keep in mind the Inspire has a head-start with all the DesireHD rom work that's out there, the Atrix is likely going to get a bunch of support too.
- HTC has claimed the Desire HD will get 2.3 by the end of June, and HTC has been one of the more reliable companies for getting updates put out there. (I have no doubt that the Atrix will get 2.3, but will Moto try some new bootloader protection?)
That's it for now, as I probably should be working.
Just my opinions though, hopefully helps you in your decision.
Atrix would be a pretty nice phone, but I'm always kind of skeptical when it comes to Motorola Phones. I'd look into some HTC phones. In my experience, they are the overall best Android manufacturer. Not sure what phones are available in Canada though.
try LG optimus 3d. 4gb ram. dual core. highest quadrant score.
I was interested in the Atrix too. Judging by all the negative posts over in the Atrix forum, I think I'll pass on it. Do yourself a favour and pass on it as well. I too was not happy with Rogers, and switched to FIDO (I know same company). I've dealt with Bell on other issues (not cell phone) and they are no better. I do agree though I think their coverage area and network (Bell) is best.
Well I mean, hoe are you going to say he should or shouldn't get it if you haven't even used it? The best you can do is post your oppinions oon the device and what you do and don't like.
However, I have it and I'm taking it back. Not because it is a bad phone or there are things wrong with it, but I just don't want to use my upgrade right now and I don't need the phone.
It has a higher resolution so things are smaller and crisper, allowing you to see more things at one time.
The phone is amazingly fast and the high amount of RAM lets you have many apps in the background without slowing down at all.
The battery life is great, and people areg reporting great life with the phone; I couldn't complain.
All in all, if you aren't going to upgrade to a custom kernel, then youll be good to go.
Anymore qquestions, feel free to ask.

I'm on Sprint but I work at a Verizon retail store. I've used all the phones. The Droid X2 is not much of any upgrade from the Droid X. It's basically a Droid X without a camera button, and with a dual core CPU. Not really worth it, especially since it has an encrypted bootloader. I really like the Thunderbolt (I have an Evo), but if you're going to play a lot of games, get the Droid Charge. It has the same (or slightly better) CPU that's in the Epic, and the Thunderbolt doesn't quite compare in terms of speed. There's also the LG Revolution, which is Bing'd out, but is still a great phone. Personally, if you're going to be gaming, I say go for the Droid Charge.
i saw that the droid x2 has a duel core and well my epic has the same cpu as the charge is there a BIG speed difference in these phones? even after root and everything clean from crapware?
i saw the charge is 299$ where the droid x2 is 199$ is it rly worth the 100$ to get a single core cpu? i know the screen is bad ass on the charge but i heard the x2 is pretty darn good
Don't forget that there is more to the phone than fancy hardware. Droid X2 might be nice, but it still runs moto blur, a UI that often is rated as one of the worst ones of Android. I personally remember playing around with the original Droid X at the VZW store months back and the model on display was lagging from menu to menu.
Software > Hardware, at least in most cases.

I won't lie, the latest version of Motoblur on the Droid X / Droid X2 is not bad at all (though a little laggy on the home screen). But the thing has an encrypted bootloader, which means you can't flash custom kernels, which means your ROM selection will be very limited. Also, the Gingerbread update also introduced something retarded: If you root and try to tether without a tethering plan, you will be redirected to a Verizon page to buy the plan every time you try to load a website.
I haven't used the Droid Charge enough to see differences from the Epic other than they use an orange/brown theme instead of blue on the Epic. Also, the Charge has 4G, so you'll be future-proof. On the other hand, the Droid X2 is dual-core so you'll be future-proofed in terms of performance (Android 2.3 and under don't make use of both cores). I'm really not sure how well it compares, or rather WILL compare against the GPU of the Charge, which is hard to beat.
In terms of price, I think the Droid X2 is priced pretty fairly. The Charge on the other hand is a $100 more and, besides HDMI output and 4G LTE, doesn't really add much to your Epic. In the end it's really up to you. You always have 30 days to change the phone. Drop into a Verizon store and try them out. But keep in mind that Quadrant Standard isn't optimized for dual cores and Neocore is optimized for Qualcomm (ie Snapdragon) chipsets.
i did forget to add a phone.... the sony xperia play i do play a ALOT of ps1 emualtor on my epic.... how is the xperia play? i mean i forgot it was even out lol im use to the 4inch screen but if its bad ass for games and then that maybe be the phone to get

Would someone mind explaining to a n00b what the above means? I too am considering the Thunderbolt (or maybe the Evo 3D).
TIA
he is talkin about benchmarkn its nothing really just a score on how fast is the phone and stuff but some programs are more into other CPUS then others so give more points to the slower cpu

I've played with the Xperia play. The good thing about it is that it's mainly stock Android (no skin, but it does have extra Sony Widgets and some crapware). It comes with Crash Bandicoot (the PS1 version) and some Bruce Lee game, among other games. It played pretty smooth, but it only has a 1GHz Snapdragon, so nothing too impressive. If you want a video with a good benchmark, watch this one. It even compares it to other phones (ps the Optimus 2X has a Tegra 2):

If you can hold off, the Galaxy S II, which is the most powerful Android phone out right now, will be coming to Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T anywhere from July to August. It's all unofficial as of now, but they're definitely coming because they've been named (AT&T Attain, Sprint Within, Verizon Function).

Quadrant Standard and Neocore are benchmarking apps used to show the CPU and GPU capablities of a phone. The issue is that neither will give you an accurate result of the raw power of a phone.
Avoid Moto ATM
I used to be a staunch supporter of Motorola phones, but in the last couple years, especially with Android OS, they've been very lackluster to me. I support the phones in our office, and we've got several versions of Motos here that give us all sorts of issues. Its amazing what features that Moto manages to turn off natively that all other phones seem to have, plus they go out of their way to make it difficult to update to custom ROMs, etc.
I would definitely go with the TBolt, I've had mine for a couple months now and came from a N1 i was using with iWireless and love the TBolt, Rooted and running Gingerbread, everything works great

I have a Tbolt & I love it. Mainly because (1) it has 4G and (2) the *very* active dev community here. You may not be concerned with 4G now, but it may come to your area before you are allowed to upgrade phones, so that may be worth considering. Also, some of the TB kernels allow overclocking up to 1.92ghz. The DX2 will proly still give better emulator performance, but I'd bet an overclocked Tbolt would emulate better than a stock Droid Charge (an o/c'd Charge would be a different story. Idk if you can even o/c a Charge, I don't follow the Charge threads). The last time I checked the Charge rom dev section, it was pretty sparse. That will change as more devs get their hands on it, but for the moment you can't get flash happy with a Charge. The Charge's amoled screen is freaking gorgeous. There is nothing else like a Samsung amoled. Colors are really vivid & bright and black is *black*, not dark grey like on a lcd. The Charge's battery life is better than the Tbolt too. I don't know much about the DX2 but I do know that if you like playing with custom roms & kernels, the DX2's bootloader will be very frustrating. I have never messed with Moto Blur but the majority of comments I've read about it are not positive. Ultimately it's a matter of tradeoffs & what is most important to you. If you want the best emulator performance & don't mind giving up custom roms, go for DX2. If you want an awesome screen & can wait a few weeks for rom development to pan out, get the Charge. If you've gotta have custom roms/kernels *right now* & don't mind lackluster battery life, check out the Tbolt.

Thunderbolt now or wait for Galaxy S II or Evo 3D?
Will the Bolt be outdated soon with dual processors out now? I'm in no real hurry and can wait a few months so I'm thinking of waiting for Galaxy S II since I've read it is going to be open source now.
In Los Angeles will it matter whether I'm on Sprint or Verizon as far as 4G performance goes? The speed tests I've found are outdated and one listed Verizon as the very worst performing network but they tested in Columbus, OH and people posted that it wasn't an accurate test because of that.
I would go with the thunderbolt, and i just did a few days ago actually. It has the most dev support on here and I hate moto with a passion so the choice was easy for me.

Hello, this has probably need asked before but I need help with this decision. Currently own an iPhone and switching over to the android market. Narrowed my choice down to the Razr HD and the s3, but I can't decide which will be better. The main features I need are a good browsing experience, good video playback(netflix/youtube). I don't really need the camera, so it doesnt matter which one has the better picture quality. Any suggestions? Thanks

You'll pretty much never get updates from anything Motorola, plus they love to lock down their devices, so you'll have a hard time rooting your device. I would say between those two devices, the S3 right away. Why? Much better camera, a MicroSD card slot, removable battery, and 2GB of RAM. Samsung also provides a lot of updates for their devices. I'd go for the S3 for sure.

No; that's what everyone thought, but Google only bought them for their patents, so they could defend Android from Apple's lawsuits and patent infringement claims. The only time you'll ever see updates from Motorola is if you're on Verizon here in the US (Verizon is the network that SAVED Motorola's butt by releasing the original Droid, aka the Milestone outside the US). And even then, like I said they encrypt their bootloaders shut, so you can't update your device yourself. Then they release a new "HD" or "4G" or "MAXX" version of the same phone you have and try to sell that to you.
Besides that, like I said, the S3 has a memory card slot, a removable battery (batteries hold less and less over time, so this is important), a better camera (I know you don't care, but still), and is overall a MUCH better device. Trust me on this; I've owned way too many phones in the last year alone to be wrong on this one lol.

Waiting for the Motorola Turbo. Small Screen, but great specs. I really don't need a phablet.
The turbo looks nice. I still like the kevlar back on these phones. Sony has just raised the bar with the upcoming z3.
Is the Z3 coming to Verizon? I can't find reliable info on what carriers will have it/when it's actually coming out.

Do you mean the Turbo itself or the Mini version? Because the Droid is rumoured to have a 5.2" screen, do you actually call that small? Wow, how the standards change fast...
I'm looking forward to the Turbo Mini, Turbo M, or whatever they're going to call it. I'm not sure if they will even be releasing any such device, but I'm guessing they will remain true to their tradition of 3 Droid models per generation - one maxed out, one standard and one a bit smaller.

dunno, sorta want the Moto X, but not a VZW bloated one. Thinking of jumping ship to T-mobile, but not sure if their coverage will cut it.
The problem I have with the Moto X is subpar battery life... that and no SD card slot. What were they thinking? Even the G has an SD card slot and it's supposed to be the "budget" phone.

Good point, I have 64 gig now, why go the other way.
T-mobile has all the phones that everyone wants. I'm considering jumping ship but since I finally got my bill down to below $60 with vzw it's gonna be a tough decision. Does anyone know if the odds of gaining an unlocked bootloader on t-mobile are greater?
The odds are a hell of a lot better on T-Mobile from what I've seen.
Then it looks like t-mobile is where I'm going
I've actually been looking at the nexus devices, I think I may consider getting one of those.
I've read rumors it might be a ginormous 5.9" screen
