What's the next phone? - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My contract is up an I am thinking of waiting for the new Sony Xperia Z3. What phones are you folks looking forward to?

I'm not looking forward to anything right now. I've been using the HTC M8 for a few months and I love it.

Waiting for the Motorola Turbo. Small Screen, but great specs. I really don't need a phablet.

The turbo looks nice. I still like the kevlar back on these phones. Sony has just raised the bar with the upcoming z3.

Is the Z3 coming to Verizon? I can't find reliable info on what carriers will have it/when it's actually coming out.

yeah im waiting for the z3, hopefully it happens.

Do you mean the Turbo itself or the Mini version? Because the Droid is rumoured to have a 5.2" screen, do you actually call that small? Wow, how the standards change fast...
I'm looking forward to the Turbo Mini, Turbo M, or whatever they're going to call it. I'm not sure if they will even be releasing any such device, but I'm guessing they will remain true to their tradition of 3 Droid models per generation - one maxed out, one standard and one a bit smaller.

dunno, sorta want the Moto X, but not a VZW bloated one. Thinking of jumping ship to T-mobile, but not sure if their coverage will cut it.

The problem I have with the Moto X is subpar battery life... that and no SD card slot. What were they thinking? Even the G has an SD card slot and it's supposed to be the "budget" phone.

Good point, I have 64 gig now, why go the other way.

T-mobile has all the phones that everyone wants. I'm considering jumping ship but since I finally got my bill down to below $60 with vzw it's gonna be a tough decision. Does anyone know if the odds of gaining an unlocked bootloader on t-mobile are greater?

The odds are a hell of a lot better on T-Mobile from what I've seen.

Then it looks like t-mobile is where I'm going

I've actually been looking at the nexus devices, I think I may consider getting one of those.

I've read rumors it might be a ginormous 5.9" screen

[Q] Upgrade this month? What to do

I have an upgrade this month on AT&T. Its actually on my granpas phone number because we added him to ours and I could use that upgrade.
What should I do? I almost thought about getting the s3 just to try out and see what its like, but I just hate the look of it and haven't had good service with samsung before.
Also thought about getting iphone 5. I know a good bit about iPhones like jailbreaking and all that good stuff. But I am really an android guy. I could get it for my girlfriend which currently has iphone 4 and sell her iphone 4 possibly.
I would be the one jailbreaking it and all the fun stuff with it lol.
Or should I just wait? Is anything good coming out soon?

HTC One X+ is coming out (One X with a quad core, 2100mAh battery, 64GB storage). That would be a good choice.
Galaxy Note 2 is supposedly coming to AT&T if you like big displays. (Quad core, 2GB of Ram, sd slot)
And then there is a lot of Nexus rumors flying about.
Personally, I would wait and get one of those.
Have you seen the iPhone 5 in person? Its pretty underwhelming. Disappointing, really. It looks almost exactly like the iPhone 4. Just the screen is 1/2 inch longer in portrait orientation, which makes it 16:9 in landscape (for watching HD television programs). It also gives it a goofy long "candy bar" shape compared to most every other smartphone out there. Slightly faster CPU, a bit thinner, and aluminum back (instead of glass). But otherwise its the same old same old. It really brings nothing new to the series. Also, the screen is still so small, it seems like a joke now that I'm accustomed to the One X.
GS3 is not a bad phone, and great dev activity. I might consider it. But we're already a few month along into that phone's cycle. So I wouldn't be surprised if an incremental update is not released on AT&T. Or the Note 2 may be an option for you.
I might consider the One X+, given its an incremental improvement on an already stellar phone. And its coming out on AT&T with 64 GB of storage. But given the bootloader unlock ituation on 2.20, I might wait and see how locked down any future HTC device on AT&T is before a purchase. Or wait for a dev community root/unlock solution before buying.
I haven't seen Iphone 5 in person. I have heard rumors bout the one x. Didn't know it would be worth the upgrade. It would have a lot of the same roms as this wouldn't it? Any info on a date on it?

The One X+ would be worth the upgrade (not the One X which has been out for 4 months now). It should be shipping this month.
And no it will have different ROMs and you will not be able to use the ROMs for the current AT&T version. Different chipset. You will brick your phone.

Man that sucks. The white version is my favorite. Looks better than grey to me.
Looked up some pics of the phone and not a big fan of that red ring on the back camera. Everything else can be covered with a case. But that is just tacky to me lol.
Windows phones are useless. Apple devices make no sense whatsoever. Android is so much easier.
Ever since growing up with Macintosh computers in 80s and 90s and the desire to napalm the original iMac my mother purchased. I find Apple appalling in every way fathomable.
I would atleast wait to see how the Jellybean rom is for the hoxl.

Red is pretty signature for Verizon Droid phones. I'm guessing it will be removed on the AT&T version.
I would wait. There are a lot of phones rumored to come. Like the Samsung s3 but with a smaller screen, HTC one x+, lumia 920(with amazing camera), a new nexus, and the note 2, as well as LG G phone with the new built in LCD screen. A lot of choices.

my 90 day trade in: Optimus G? One X+? Keep One X?

I switched over to att in early august through costco and was given a 90 day phone trade in guarantee. I really do not have any reason to complain about my One X as it meets and exceeds my needs and expectations but I do intend to get my "contracts" worth and would like to have the latest and greatest i can before i'm locked in. At first I was interested in the X+ as it would have the quadcore goodness of the international version in the body i've already come ot love but seeing the minor performance lead the int version has compared to bat drain it seems more like a sideways move or minor upgrade. On the other end the Optimus G will have a quadcore version of the same chip we are all using now. Adreno 320 and a screen comparable to what I currently have. Of course there is the wait time for root, the possibility of never getting it, waiting for Cm, the possibility of never officially getting CM and and so on that would make sticking to the One X I have a viable option over upgrading. What do you all think? What option would you go with?

I would probably get the optimus g

i would've gotten the One X+ but the color scheme is boring
optimus g seems interesting but i never liked LG for phones
if you want LG, wait for the LG Nexus 4
However, I'm not sure about going with any LG phones at this point with the disaster that was the G2x. If anything, wait for the phone to be out for a few months to see if the early adopters report any issues with hardware.
I would say get the one X+ and hope it gets as good of a dev community as we have here and isn't locked down like it more than likely will be for awhile. The upgrades aren't too significant but if you want the latest and greatest for the next 6 months until the one X+s MAXX comes out that's your best bet.
Look at the specs and decide which one u want ...how is some random person on a forum with their own opinion and view points going to tell you which phone you should get..review each one and think of which would fit you best its not hard
My opinion on this is: wrong section. This belongs in Q&A.

I'm not sure where I stated I want someone to decide for me. I'm trying to fill in blanks in info that I can't fill or won't be able to until the day before my 90 days run out. Specs aren't enough info. I know the lg will have superior soc But I've never had an lg phone so I know nothing of their build quality. Thankfully some people hinted that its been poor historicaly poor. Another bit of info im wondering is will the similarities in the int one x and x+ streamline development once root has been achieved or are the differences likely too great? I know I'll be waiting if I switch but a small one may be worth an incremental performance increase.I'm not looking for baseless opinions but rather details and things to take into consideration I may have forgotten or overlooked

LG continues to make cheap feeling and looking phones. They've gotten better lately, but still pale in comparison to HTC, which has the best physical design and build quality, IMO.
the LG was just announced to have a locked bootloader

I'd go One X+. Quad core processor, bigger battery (1800 vs 2100mAh), and most importantly more storage! I am constantly having to manage what is on my phone and wish it had come with 32GB or 64GB. That alone is worth the swap out.
As for the Optimus G, I am not a huge LG fan. Their build quality in the past has been meh (although it looks like they are getting much better), but software updates are usually non-existent.
I will go for one x + and only reason for that is storage option
There is very little to dislike about about the Optimus G -- it's crazy fast (It's benchmarking everyone into the ground) I'ts spec'd correctly at 2 Gigs and 32 Gigs out of the box (with half the 32 for AT&T coming in the form a removable micro SD) Although I've not seen it, those who have, say the display is a close second to the HOXL. It's just so ..... Boxy and dated looking..
Personally, I think it would be a mistake to get the HOXL+ because its very obvious what HTC is trying to do. They are "Staging Tech" in an attempt to turn a single device cycle into a trilogy. They are a distant 3rd behind Apple and Samsung so the need to make sure that they have a "new device" out at all times. Remember, some 75,000 AT&T customers are up for contract every single day - so when "Joe" walks into a store, he has no idea that a 6 month old phone for under a $100 bucks is still arguably the best - he just simply wants the newest one which in his mind must be the best. What HTC is doing is crap -- essentially screwing over there ever dwindling fan base in a very short-sighted money grab. It sucks because I think despite the 3 "purposely" glossed over deficiencies of the HOXL... it still rocks. Yeah, I said on purpose --- Do you really believe that a bunch of engineers graduating from the likes of Cal Tech, MIT and Stanford were oblivious to the fact that their gorgeous little baby with the body of an athlete has somewhat the "capacity" of a child with special needs and an ever so slight hitch in her step????.
My advice is to hold off on the "Plus" --part 2 of the screw - still only 1 Gig of RAM - currently ok for a tablet but for a device that has an ever present and running dialer in its background it could struggle and offset the whole 4 core experience ----- Wait for the "PLUS +" I'm sure it will be out sometime late spring with the extra Gig that we will all have been whinning about and maybe HTC will even throw in battery access

Farewell Thunderbolt!

Looks like my mecha days are over. Just wanted to drop a thanks to all the developers who tried (granted the lack of support by HTC) to keep this device updated. Not only the developers I owe my gratitude to, but as well as the community who guided me in the right direction.
I received my out-of-brand replacement Droid RAZR yesterday and have already gotten some ROM's on there (jelly bean woo woo!)... What a BIG difference in development I must say as far as ROM's go.
Big thanks again,
PEACE!
How do you have custom ROMs on a moto device like a RAZR? Isn't it all "screw them hackers" locked down bootloader?

Actually yeah, the bootloader is locked. When I received the Razr as a replacement, I was wondering the same thing. They have a nifty work around actually. The bootloader pretty much locks in the current OS and kernel so that it can't be wiped (or heavily modified) from the device...
What has been done is that a developer took TWRP and modified it so it works with the bootloader. It shelves the OS's on different partitions, but keeps your stock MOTO ROM on the phone (untouched). Right now I have 2 other ROM's installed on my phone that I can interchange during a reboot. I actually prefer this to unlocking the bootloader and clearing my phone completely. For any reason I ever need to call Verizon, unrooting my phone is almost 10 easier.

I'd recommend the HTC DNA. I've upgraded my Thunderbolt tot he GS3, then returned it the next day, and when the MAXX HD came out I upgraded to that but returned it the following week. I haven't found a phone that I enjoy like I have the Thunderbolt, each phone has major compromises. My cousin has the HTC One X and it's an absolutely gorgeous device, the camera is great and the display is unmatched. I'm hoping the DNA will be my next phone.

I was about to poop my pants when you mentioned that you returned your GS3.... then decided to go and do some research on the DNA and again, nearly pooped my pants. The DNA looks absolutely AMAZING.
This is what got me going:
- Super LCD 3
- 440 PPI (full 1080p res 1920 x 1080)
- Expandable microSD (thank GOD!! manufactures are deterring the option of SD to create a heavier price market for mobile devices; ex. Samsung GS3)
- 2,020 mAh
- JellyBean 4.1 STOCK
- Bezel Thin Display (for those who don't know, the LCD will cover the entire phone leaving little, to no borders)
DEAL MAKER!
- Snapdragon S4 Pro Quad-Core
ALSO, failed to mention it has 5 inch display, 2GB of RAM, and a 16GB internal storage (which I assume might have variations of: 16, 32, etc..)

Yeah I know guys it seems legit! Regarding those specs, that battery is supposed to be bumped up to 2500 mAh so that should help a little. I just hope battery life is good on this device. That was one of the Thunderbolt's major problems. Of course all of these ROMS helped with that and I just got spare batteries so it isn't a problem anymore for me though.... The Droid DNA looks amazing though! I can't wait for it. I just hope they are able to unlock the bootloader if it is locked so we can but some stock 4.2 on it!

Nexus 6 coming to Verizon.

Who's making the switch in November? I'm truly astonished that Verizon is going to carry another nexus. Looks to be quite a beast of a phone. What's your thoughts/opinions?

It doesn't have sd slot so I probably won't be selling my m8 and switch. SD slot is my top priority.
I probably won't switch over because I already own a tablet.

Nexus 6 doesn't offer anything I don't already have in the M8 and a good bit less. No removable storage; no Sense interface; no Boomsound. Meh. On the other hand, I may sell my N7 and TF300T/dock to get the Nexus 9.
I would make the switch but this is gunna be my last contract phone with Verizon...

It's too big--I really wish they would've refreshed the Nexus 5 alongside the new Nexus 6, but I guess that's what the new Moto X/Droid Turbo is for? Not surprising that this is supported on all carriers--it's no longer a $299 off contract phone so carriers can subsidize and lock you in to contracts...everyone's happy
I'm looking forward to a head-to-head review of the Nexus 6 vs. Droid Turbo...whenever it's eventually updated to Lollipop. Pixel density on the Droid Turbo must be insane!!

Just play with the Moto X second generation and imagine the same thing just bigger, a better display, and Android L
Phone looks Ugly. I'm so content with the M8.
HTC One M8 ?
I gotta see how it feels in the hand though, might be too big.
My big question is if google will allow Verizon to lock the bootloader down tight without any options to unlock. Nexus devices I've owned you can always fastboot unlock bootloader easily. I'm curious if Verizon will dictate this like they do on all other devices. If the bootloader cannot be unlocked then I won't be switching unless I just switch carriers all together. I've thought of doing straight talk with at&t sim but my work has a Verizon tower right outback and with a steel building you can't get any signal inside the building with any service other than Verizon. Anyone heard anything on the bootloader situation being different for Verizon than other carriers on the nexus 6?

Good question time will tell.
Verizon is the only carrier to not officially confirm anything yet. All the other carriers have already chimed in.

Too big with no stylus 64 GB too expensive but not enough storage. Metal body? I like the M8'$ m#tal body. Boom sound ? Unlockable bl? (Time will tell...) Weaker selfie camera @ 2 mp <5mp ... I like the 13 mp can on the 6 but I also love my camera at just four huge pixels. Development ie Roms should be good for the 6 if bl is unlocked however I feel that the m8 xposed app and or our Roms are great/excellent I like sense a lot too. I was hoping the 6 would be better. However I like the three gig of ram on the phablet and its processor+... Google failed...
When they had the Galaxy Nexus on vzw, it was easily unlocked through the simple fastboot command. I'd assume it'll be the same, but who knows.
I want to see how it feels in the hand. Also, can the Turbo's bootloader be unlocked?
I may stick with the M8, we will see how development goes. Time will tell.
No SD card doesn't sound fun. I love what I can do with mine on M8 now. Lack of space shldnt be a regular issue. Plus you can just do more with one.
I like nexus devices but am a htc fanboy so im sticking with my m8
Nope. To big.
I'll hold out for the turbo. Wait for 2nd prices and Dev.
No chance, the nexus 6 looks great but I got the M8 for its audio specifically. The M8 also has more potential storage and I don't see the Nexus6 as much of an upgrade performance wise for games considering @ 1440p it gets roughly the same FPS as the M8 @ 1080p from what I've seen. Only potential advantage would be the higher amount of development but I've grown tired of stock android and really enjoy Sense these days. The M8 has too much good for me to ditch it, very solid all around good pocket computer (which is how i use it)

anyone else notice a missing phone...

Wasn't that the specs of the oneplus two?
Probably just the rumour mill doing its thing. With the moto x, it made sense why there were conflicting reports about battery and screen size - because they were going to be two different handsets.
A new Nexus?
Yeah. A few months ago moto was like the smartest phone ever is coming soon. Then silence. Now this which is a nexus 6.

Rumors are $628 US. Which would automatically top the charts and presumably make it the Moto flagship.
