Looks like my mecha days are over. Just wanted to drop a thanks to all the developers who tried (granted the lack of support by HTC) to keep this device updated. Not only the developers I owe my gratitude to, but as well as the community who guided me in the right direction.
I received my out-of-brand replacement Droid RAZR yesterday and have already gotten some ROM's on there (jelly bean woo woo!)... What a BIG difference in development I must say as far as ROM's go.
Big thanks again,
PEACE!
How do you have custom ROMs on a moto device like a RAZR? Isn't it all "screw them hackers" locked down bootloader?
Duely blundered from my thunderdolt.

Actually yeah, the bootloader is locked. When I received the Razr as a replacement, I was wondering the same thing. They have a nifty work around actually. The bootloader pretty much locks in the current OS and kernel so that it can't be wiped (or heavily modified) from the device...
What has been done is that a developer took TWRP and modified it so it works with the bootloader. It shelves the OS's on different partitions, but keeps your stock MOTO ROM on the phone (untouched). Right now I have 2 other ROM's installed on my phone that I can interchange during a reboot. I actually prefer this to unlocking the bootloader and clearing my phone completely. For any reason I ever need to call Verizon, unrooting my phone is almost 10 easier.

I've been looking at jumping to a new phone from my T-Bolt but I also don't want to lose my grandfathered unlimited on VZW.
My upgrade is later this month too. I'm just not sure which phone I should go with. Right now I'm debating between getting the Moto Droid Razr Maxx HD or the soon to be announced HTC Droid DNA. That new HTC phone looks like a powerhouse! You guys have any suggestions?

Well let's put it this way - I didn't pay anything. They sent me this as a replacement for my Thunderbolt, not an upgrade.

I'd recommend the HTC DNA. I've upgraded my Thunderbolt tot he GS3, then returned it the next day, and when the MAXX HD came out I upgraded to that but returned it the following week. I haven't found a phone that I enjoy like I have the Thunderbolt, each phone has major compromises. My cousin has the HTC One X and it's an absolutely gorgeous device, the camera is great and the display is unmatched. I'm hoping the DNA will be my next phone.

I was about to poop my pants when you mentioned that you returned your GS3.... then decided to go and do some research on the DNA and again, nearly pooped my pants. The DNA looks absolutely AMAZING.
This is what got me going:
- Super LCD 3
- 440 PPI (full 1080p res 1920 x 1080)
- Expandable microSD (thank GOD!! manufactures are deterring the option of SD to create a heavier price market for mobile devices; ex. Samsung GS3)
- 2,020 mAh
- JellyBean 4.1 STOCK
- Bezel Thin Display (for those who don't know, the LCD will cover the entire phone leaving little, to no borders)
DEAL MAKER!
- Snapdragon S4 Pro Quad-Core
ALSO, failed to mention it has 5 inch display, 2GB of RAM, and a 16GB internal storage (which I assume might have variations of: 16, 32, etc..)

Yeah I know guys it seems legit! Regarding those specs, that battery is supposed to be bumped up to 2500 mAh so that should help a little. I just hope battery life is good on this device. That was one of the Thunderbolt's major problems. Of course all of these ROMS helped with that and I just got spare batteries so it isn't a problem anymore for me though.... The Droid DNA looks amazing though! I can't wait for it. I just hope they are able to unlock the bootloader if it is locked so we can but some stock 4.2 on it!

I just got the Atrix 2 and was wondering if there is a root protocol for the 2.3.5 that does not require flashing the 2.3.4 SBF?
thanks in advance!
One all the rooting methods you see here are at the moment strictly for the original so far as I am aware, and also no one has done Anything with the A2 that I have noticed so until than hold out.
Surprisingly slow rate of adaption. This is my first Motorola device. Very nice feel and solid quality. Don't know about older blur phones but this skin isn't bad.

Return you Atrix 2 and either get the SGS II or the Atrix 1. ooooor just wait for better phones. The Atrix 2 was a joke.
Would if I could but don't have the money up front for the Cost of the Latest Greatest Most Expensive Phone considering I caught the Atrix 2 for 49.99 which is my budget when I got it. So unless you can tell me somewhere that the SGSII is selling for 49.99 than I am stuck with it.
I bricked my SGS and had to buy the atrix 2 last week, I want root so I can TI restore some of my stuff, but other then that, I just want reliable and stable
plus with ICS on the way the Atrix2 should be even better soon
Here is hoping we get root soon
I just picked one up today, I'm very surprised there isn't a forum for this phone. I've owned an sgs2, have an og atrix running cm7 and its nice but the atrix 2 screen is much better. The sgs2 was ok but touchwiz is very boring, I know its easy to change but the phone itself while fast was boring. I guess I owned a captivate for too long.
I wish att had a better selection of htc devices.
Has anyone tried super one click root for the a2? I may give it a try and see what happens. If I try I'll report back with my results. And for the guy that says the a2 is a joke,
have you tried one yet or are you basing your judgment from stats that you have read? I'm using one right now and honestly I am enjoying it more than the sgs2 to be honest with you. I almost grabbed the att branded sgs2 but figured it would be the same as the international version was.

The SGSII is actually the same screen size as the A2 on at&t. I believe the one that will have the 4.5" is the T-Mobile version. But still yes I agree 480 x 800 sucks and I like the A2 screen much better from what I saw in the Store.

What makes the A2 so bad? I don't get it I just picked one up last night and I think it's a pretty nice phone actually, completely blown away that I got it for just $50. No the screen is no Super AMOLED, it's no Retina display, but it's plenty bright and colorful and the increased pixel density makes it pretty decent. Otherwise, it's a dual core phone with a cpu that's perfectly capable, utilizing a gpu that other so-called "high end" phones also use, has 1gb of ram, 4gb of internal storage, 2gb MicroSD card (will accept up to 32gb) and is running the latest version of GB, v2.3.5.
I've been playing with my phone non-stop since I got it last night and it's been lovely. Nice and smooth, my download speeds have increased dramatically over my SE Xperia X10, it installs apps significantly faster, I think it's horribly underpriced at $49.99 and I doubt there's any devices out there at this price point that can compete. The OG Atrix has that horrible Pentile Matrix display and MotoBlur, no thanks. And the SGSII, at 4 times the price of the Atrix 2, it better be a superior device! So what phones out there at $50 are head and shoulders better than the Atrix 2?
I had to cough up 30 bucks for a 16 gb micro sd and another 50 for a good case. So what? 49.99 really is a steal when u compare it to the torch 9810, the infuse 4g, and the Xperia play. I almost pulled the trigger on the infuse but it will be ages before it gtd an update.
100% happy I bought this and the screen is very sharp
I returned the SGSII in favor of the new Atrix because the internal radios are Way better! Not quite as smooth and a little slower on the Web side, but worth it for me. Besides, the screen on the Atrix 2 is way better in the sunlight = seriously the best on the market in the sun! I've looked at them •All• since I just switched over from the iPhone 4S. (yep)
For me the screen and better radios were major selling points.
Your reasons may be different

Same here! I love the large screen and high resolution. I would love it even more if I could get root.
I played around with the A2 and the SGII for over an hr yesterday at the store and the display is better on the A2 by far. ATT price matched best buy and i walked out with the A2 for 49.99 and after playing with it all night i couldnt be more happier. This phone has a 4.3" screen but as far as the actual phone size is the smallest ATT has to offer with the same screen size and feels great in the hand. All the haters need to use this phone some before they go on with there rants about not living up to the OG because I remember not long ago when the OG was SLOW and buggy running froyo, not until it recieved gingerbread did the OG true potential start showing!! I have the OG and as soon as the A2 gets some development love and hopefully CM9 with some ICS, I will prolly retire the OG! This phone for the price is better then anything I have played with so far and until the new Nexus comes out would be hard for me to give up.
Guys...
I have a Thunderbolt and due to the length of time I have been with Verizon and issues I have had, they are giving me a new phone of my choice (not a refurb).
What phone would you all go to (those who root and use custom ROMs) if you had your choice of any phone. Keep in mind I have always liked Sense Rom's but have never had a Motorola phone or a Nexus.
Please let me know!!!!
Thanks so much and have a happy new year!!!

I'm personally not very fond of Sense & Motoblur UI. I would suggest the Galaxy Nexus, especially if they are giving you a new phone (hopefully free for you) and one of the major reasons why I would is first and foremost the HD Super AMOLED screen in general PLUS it having a 1280x720 resolution on that beautiful 4.6" screen (black pixels actually turn off instead of illuminating and looking wasted out and colors are 10X more vibrant), the 1.2GHz dual-core processor, PURE Google phone so no custom UI and you get all the updates before any other phone, Android 4.0 (Mmm), 1850mAh battery (soooo much better than the Thunderbolt) and 1080p video recording.
For me that is the only phone that I would go with, especially as far as what phones are out now on Verizon (which aren't that impressive). That HD Super AMOLED screen is just too sweet to pass up!

In my opinion I would say so because the Razr has an ugly amount of bezel around the LCD and the resolution is only 960x540 and has the Motoblur overlay and the Rezound is not too bad of a phone, I am just not too much of a fan of the Sense overlay either. I'm not sure but I think quad-core phones won't appear until around Quarter 2 or so of 2012.
Waiting is always not a bad idea, but the Galaxy Nexus is definitely worth it, again IMO. haha hopefully I was some help.

That's pretty messed up. If that's the case though, The HTC Rezound is a no brainier. It's similar spec'd and the display is gorgeous.
Think I should wait for the spring and keep my tbolt? Or is the Rezound or Nexus really worth it??

Find out the most expensive phone they'll give you. Take that value, presuming it's lower than the Nexus, and offer to pay the difference.
howd you get a replacement? They sent me like 5 refurbs. Then finally they sent me a bionic, refurb, and I'm not real thrilled with it. It keeps forcing updates then failing and losing all my data. Kinda tired of dealing with these issues after paying 2400+ a year. At this point I would like to see if the rezound is any better, but they want me to shell out another 250 for the "privilege" of an early upgrade.

Don't get a Charge
I had 2 thunderbolts and then did the charge when the random reboot started. Waited for the TB and glad I went back no comparison. Slow, everything, gps, data, email etc. Had a TB a month now and loving it.
I liked my bolt before it was rooted, now that it's rooted I love the sh*t out of it....but if you're in the mood for a change, I agree with the recommendation for the Nexus. I got to play with one for a good hour or so last week and really fell in love. I'm not 100% sure if it was the hardware or ICS that really appealed to me, but since you can get both at the same time, why not go for it?
I personally like the RAZR quite a bit too, but all things being equal, Nexus seems like the way to go.
I'm in the wait crowd. I want the specs of the nexus, but its got some important omissions. The GPU isn't up to snuff for a brand new top of the line phone, and its got no expansion slot for a microsd card. And, did I read the battery isn't user changeable?
I was excited by the nexus, but if the SGS3 is quad core, Super amoled HD (RGB, not pentile) and it can take a memo card, its worth the wait. I'm not so excited about the nexus since it came out.
Sent from my Bad Assed Mobile Fone
Hey, sorry about being away, for a while, long story. But the first one that I bought came with bad light leaks. The second one came badly scractched and dented. The next one was the one I had the bulk of the time, but the headphone jack ended up dieing. I was sent a replacement for that which came with a broken ear piece. The final one came with a damaged battery cover, which I just swapped with the previous phone, so no big deal.
The biggest complaint I have had is that they tried to charge me for one of the phones I had sent back, which took at least a half dozen calls and many hours to get fixed. They had sent me text messages saying that they had recieved the phone, but then a series of text messages saying that they were going to charge me for the phone not being returned. It took taking to a manager to check the future bills and a couple forms filled out for them to refund the charge.
More later...

I'm on my 7th or 8th Thunderbolt. I've been having intermittent POP3 email problems ever since I've had the phone(s). I went to a Verizon store a couple of times recently when I had the issue and noticed that with the exact same settings, the Galaxy and the Rezound worked while the Thunderbolt did not. The Bionic and Razr also did not work.
Anyway, they won't let me have anything except for a Charge or Revolution. I think the Revolution is a lesser phone than the Thunderbolt, and I don't know if my POP3 account would work on the Charge. I would've tried it out, but either the store didn't have it or it wasn't working if they did.
Has anyone come across this same issue before? If so, what amount (and nature) of convincing did it take to get them to offer something better?

Personally I am switching from the SGN to the H1X.
For me the GNex build quality is really low and I find SAMOLEDS to be inferior to IPS / LCD panels.
Also, the camera on the GNex is painfully bad, like exceptionally bad.
Plus, LTE support if they roll it out near you soon.

Here's the facts:
GN = First gen h/w, new OS
HOX = Next gen h/w, new OS
OS' change; h/w is forever.
Other than consistently getting OS updates first from Google I'm hard pressed to see one advantage that the GN holds over the HOX (or upcoming SGS3). And assuming the dev support is good it'll be days after a new OS version is released before you'll be able to flash it in some form.
id say get the one x..
from my point of view, htc is ahead in software updates for ice cream sandwhich??? not sure but its my guess..

Depends on where you live. Luckily I own a nexus and will be owning this device
pretty soon. When it comes to design and specs, the one x has the edge. Software
is the nexus strong point. Stock ICS is terrific and will always get the updates first.
(if your build is yakju).
But you already know people in this forum will tell you to pick up the one x =P.

If price is important, then that's a good deal. Other than h/w that's kind of stale compared to S4, Teg3, and the 4214, you can count on the s/w of a Nexus device being kept current forever (by Google and the dev community). If you plan on keeping the phone for two years I'd pay the extra to get the One X. A year or less get the GN.

Nevermind I passed by a verizon store to play with the sgn and didnt feel any faster than my htc inspire(desire hd). I still have to go to the at&t store and play with the htc one x. Not sure how I'll do with an sd card. Also, hopefully all the bugs the international version has we wont get.
Just speaking from recent experience, One X without question. I find the GNex screen to be yellow tinted and not that impressive. Points go to the build quality of the One X too. The only advantage of course to the GNex is the updates (and storage if you get a 32 GB model).
I don't think anyone in here will argue that the SGN is a great device, I even ordered one for my brother-in-law today bc $399 is a great deal! However, I myself preordered the One X bc it has superior hardware and design.

I would've recommended the Galaxy Nexus but I use to have a huge struggle with maintaining signal. I went through 5 gnex until they offered to give me a gs3 and I took it. I know plenty of people that use to have the issue didn't have it anymore once they flashed those recent jelly bean radios but there were also some like myself that still had the problem.

No offense to you personally, but I couldn't see getting an Android phone whose multitasking has been crippled, with a unibody design that makes battery replacement difficult and no SD card slot.
I'd still get it above an iPhone because it's essentially been whittled down to iPhone limitations with the size and OS we expect from contemporary Android phones, but within the Android product lines it's not something I'd seek out above others. If their JB update fixes the multitasking limitations, I could more easily see it as a second phone, though.
If I needed a second phone that wasn't necessarily in the GS3 class and dev wasn't an immediate goal, I might try out the Droid Incredible 4G LTE.
My $0.02.

RAZR maxx or if you waited the RAZR maxx hd
My contract is up an I am thinking of waiting for the new Sony Xperia Z3. What phones are you folks looking forward to?
I'm not looking forward to anything right now. I've been using the HTC M8 for a few months and I love it.

Waiting for the Motorola Turbo. Small Screen, but great specs. I really don't need a phablet.
The turbo looks nice. I still like the kevlar back on these phones. Sony has just raised the bar with the upcoming z3.
Is the Z3 coming to Verizon? I can't find reliable info on what carriers will have it/when it's actually coming out.

Do you mean the Turbo itself or the Mini version? Because the Droid is rumoured to have a 5.2" screen, do you actually call that small? Wow, how the standards change fast...
I'm looking forward to the Turbo Mini, Turbo M, or whatever they're going to call it. I'm not sure if they will even be releasing any such device, but I'm guessing they will remain true to their tradition of 3 Droid models per generation - one maxed out, one standard and one a bit smaller.

dunno, sorta want the Moto X, but not a VZW bloated one. Thinking of jumping ship to T-mobile, but not sure if their coverage will cut it.
The problem I have with the Moto X is subpar battery life... that and no SD card slot. What were they thinking? Even the G has an SD card slot and it's supposed to be the "budget" phone.

Good point, I have 64 gig now, why go the other way.
T-mobile has all the phones that everyone wants. I'm considering jumping ship but since I finally got my bill down to below $60 with vzw it's gonna be a tough decision. Does anyone know if the odds of gaining an unlocked bootloader on t-mobile are greater?
The odds are a hell of a lot better on T-Mobile from what I've seen.
Then it looks like t-mobile is where I'm going
I've actually been looking at the nexus devices, I think I may consider getting one of those.
I've read rumors it might be a ginormous 5.9" screen
