my 90 day trade in: Optimus G? One X+? Keep One X? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I switched over to att in early august through costco and was given a 90 day phone trade in guarantee. I really do not have any reason to complain about my One X as it meets and exceeds my needs and expectations but I do intend to get my "contracts" worth and would like to have the latest and greatest i can before i'm locked in. At first I was interested in the X+ as it would have the quadcore goodness of the international version in the body i've already come ot love but seeing the minor performance lead the int version has compared to bat drain it seems more like a sideways move or minor upgrade. On the other end the Optimus G will have a quadcore version of the same chip we are all using now. Adreno 320 and a screen comparable to what I currently have. Of course there is the wait time for root, the possibility of never getting it, waiting for Cm, the possibility of never officially getting CM and and so on that would make sticking to the One X I have a viable option over upgrading. What do you all think? What option would you go with?

I would probably get the optimus g
Sent from my One X using xda premium

i would've gotten the One X+ but the color scheme is boring
optimus g seems interesting but i never liked LG for phones

if you want LG, wait for the LG Nexus 4
However, I'm not sure about going with any LG phones at this point with the disaster that was the G2x. If anything, wait for the phone to be out for a few months to see if the early adopters report any issues with hardware.

I would say get the one X+ and hope it gets as good of a dev community as we have here and isn't locked down like it more than likely will be for awhile. The upgrades aren't too significant but if you want the latest and greatest for the next 6 months until the one X+s MAXX comes out that's your best bet.

Look at the specs and decide which one u want ...how is some random person on a forum with their own opinion and view points going to tell you which phone you should get..review each one and think of which would fit you best its not hard

My opinion on this is: wrong section. This belongs in Q&A.

I'm not sure where I stated I want someone to decide for me. I'm trying to fill in blanks in info that I can't fill or won't be able to until the day before my 90 days run out. Specs aren't enough info. I know the lg will have superior soc But I've never had an lg phone so I know nothing of their build quality. Thankfully some people hinted that its been poor historicaly poor. Another bit of info im wondering is will the similarities in the int one x and x+ streamline development once root has been achieved or are the differences likely too great? I know I'll be waiting if I switch but a small one may be worth an incremental performance increase.I'm not looking for baseless opinions but rather details and things to take into consideration I may have forgotten or overlooked

LG continues to make cheap feeling and looking phones. They've gotten better lately, but still pale in comparison to HTC, which has the best physical design and build quality, IMO.

the LG was just announced to have a locked bootloader

I'd go One X+. Quad core processor, bigger battery (1800 vs 2100mAh), and most importantly more storage! I am constantly having to manage what is on my phone and wish it had come with 32GB or 64GB. That alone is worth the swap out.
As for the Optimus G, I am not a huge LG fan. Their build quality in the past has been meh (although it looks like they are getting much better), but software updates are usually non-existent.

I will go for one x + and only reason for that is storage option

There is very little to dislike about about the Optimus G -- it's crazy fast (It's benchmarking everyone into the ground) I'ts spec'd correctly at 2 Gigs and 32 Gigs out of the box (with half the 32 for AT&T coming in the form a removable micro SD) Although I've not seen it, those who have, say the display is a close second to the HOXL. It's just so ..... Boxy and dated looking..
Personally, I think it would be a mistake to get the HOXL+ because its very obvious what HTC is trying to do. They are "Staging Tech" in an attempt to turn a single device cycle into a trilogy. They are a distant 3rd behind Apple and Samsung so the need to make sure that they have a "new device" out at all times. Remember, some 75,000 AT&T customers are up for contract every single day - so when "Joe" walks into a store, he has no idea that a 6 month old phone for under a $100 bucks is still arguably the best - he just simply wants the newest one which in his mind must be the best. What HTC is doing is crap -- essentially screwing over there ever dwindling fan base in a very short-sighted money grab. It sucks because I think despite the 3 "purposely" glossed over deficiencies of the HOXL... it still rocks. Yeah, I said on purpose --- Do you really believe that a bunch of engineers graduating from the likes of Cal Tech, MIT and Stanford were oblivious to the fact that their gorgeous little baby with the body of an athlete has somewhat the "capacity" of a child with special needs and an ever so slight hitch in her step????.
My advice is to hold off on the "Plus" --part 2 of the screw - still only 1 Gig of RAM - currently ok for a tablet but for a device that has an ever present and running dialer in its background it could struggle and offset the whole 4 core experience ----- Wait for the "PLUS +" I'm sure it will be out sometime late spring with the extra Gig that we will all have been whinning about and maybe HTC will even throw in battery access

2011 Android Phones

Hey guys, I'd like some recommendations on what phone I could get in the first half of next year. I've had a T-mobile G1 since 2009, currently running CM 6.1 RC1, my contract is up with T-mobile around March of 2011 and I'm interested in upgrading from the old G1 to something "nicer". What I'm looking for at this point is a bigger screen, fast processor, more internal memory, "good" camera(considering it's a phone), and most important of all: ability to root and run custom roms. As far as carrier choices, I'd be inclined to stay with T-mobile(because of their prices) or maybe verizon, even though Verizon is on the pricey side. Right now the two phones catching my attention are the Galaxy S(t-mobile), the HTC incredible(verizon), and the Evo 4G(Sprint), but 6 months from now there could be newer/better phones. Since I'd be renewing or starting a new contract, the phone will be subsidized, so the cost of a "new" phone shouldn't be an issue. What phones out there should I look into and which upcoming phones should I look forward to?

You need to ignore this train of thought. Whatever you buy, whenever you buy it there will ALWAYS be a new / better phone just around the corner.
Personally, and this is only a personal opinion I'd avoid the Galaxy S and stick with the HTC phones. Why? Just read the threads about the issues and I couldn't help notice the vast majority of issues mentioned in the apps market are Samsung owners. Just my opinion / observation mind.

Im using a galaxy and have no problems with it. Froyo runs flawlessly and the screen is like no other. Plus 5 finger multitouch, best video chip, Great camera, and 16gigs built in music is beast.

The Evo is now a lower end phone compared to the high powered monsters coming out but i stick with it cause its just an all around great phone dont have any issues and has a very very active community dedicated to making it better and better i almost feel like a nexus owner from how much love this phone gets. Id definitely recommend an HTC phone.
well, when I mentioned the better phones coming out in about 6 months I was only talking about how they could be better than what's available now. Meaning that I'd be inclined to buy what's "hot" at that point, I wasn't contemplating putting myself in an endless loop of always waiting for "the next 6 months".
Back on topic. Today I did some reading on the G2, I saw that there's people pulling off some insane overclocks quite successfully on it. I just find it a bit disappointing that it doesn't have FM radio or dual cameras, and it seems like it doesn't have multitouch either, which is quite odd for a new phone. I also went to a t-mobile store to see it in person, it was a very nice phone to be honest. The galaxy seemed to have a VERY nice screen though, quite eye-catching.
Kinda leaning towards the G2 at this point. I spoke with t-mobile and I was told that I'd be eligible for a subsidized upgrade as soon as January 10th, so I may be looking for a phone much sooner than thought.

GS2 is not even out and GS3 coming in fall?? wtf...

If true thats ridiculous....the GS2 isn't even out yet! Can we wait at least a year and a half for a successor?? I'd imagine many wont be pleased is thats true...
I want to get a new phone but its crazy how so may phones come out so quickly and out-dating the other...I feel like just getting the Iphone 5 and stick with that, at least there wont be a million choices like with android and get tempted to keep switching back and forth, I swear with android its like a new phone thats better comes out shortly after one phone comes out.
Anyone think they know what IP5 might have? Dual Core, better screen, different design, better Camera?

Note how that article says samsung is thinking of a 2ghz device sometime next year, NOT this year, then there is speculation that the device is the SGS3, and then there is someone doing even further speculation that it could come out this fall, even though we know this is impossible partly because the SGS2 variant for verizon probably won't be out until a couple months before then at best based on current news. This is just overspeculation leading to insane predictions. SGS3 in Jan or Feb next year is possible though if Tegra 3 is out by then though, as samsung will want to compete, but that's just my own speculation and have no factual data backing it as well.
Meh, I like having the highest tiered phone as much as the next guy so something new/awesome coming out right after I got the past top tier phone is a little irritating, however having new things out is always great.
I can't see me needing anything stronger than the Galaxy S 2; I would love a 4.5 inch screen but 4.3 and the specs it has is great.
The Wonders of competition I'd rather they were doing this than have technology move very slowly, Just pick a phone you like, Not slow, looks good, nice screen, decent camera and then stick with it

Agreed. You can drive yourself insane waiting for the perfect device. Pick whatever suits you best when you need a new phone and stick with it for a year or two or until you genuinely need more power.
I stuck with my mt3g as long as I could. Now I have the mt4g and love it! I don't anticipate outgrowing it any time soon.

the grass is always greener.
Well you're not alone. It's not like software/graphics wise, it's keeping up with the hardware. I don't really see any game that's pushing the tegra devices to their limit, or even power vr sgx540.
So point being, even if hardware improves dramatically next year, last year's phones will still keep up with what today demands.

Lulzy.
I don't see a problem with SGS the Third coming out next year... one solid leap forward every year sounds perfectly legitimate to me so long as the tech and improvements are keeping pace.
Yeah. I'm a little knicked that I got a great phone (HTC HD2) released here in the US a little over a year ago, then the next thing I know it's EVO with Android, no Android for the HD2 (still the best hardware out there) and no Windows Phone 7 upgrade for the HD2 either from TMO. Now I'm trolling XDA and trying to put together the info and ability (and trying to work up the balls) to set up my HD2 on a dual boot with Android on SD and WinMo 6.5 NAND.
It gets old.
wth!!! how look that? i think really better than GS2

[Q] One S or wait?

As the topic states, which would you do and why? Keep using a G2x and wait to see if something nicer than the One S releases in the near future, use an available upgrade and get the grey One S when T-Mo releases it/wait for them to release the MAO version, or burn the upgrade on a SGSII.
Sent from my stock, rooted LG-P999WA using XDA Premium
The SGSIII is probably right around the corner. That's pretty much the only other phone that will trump the One S at the point. So the question to ask yourself is if you want the One S or the SGSIII.
The last thing you want to do is use your upgrade on an SGSII. If anything sell your G2X and buy an SGSII on eBay.
If only HTC would bring out the One S with 32Gb!
I'm still enjoying my original desire but really don't think I could have any less memory than my 16Gb card. I don't want a phone any bigger than the S. So come on HTC Surely they'd fly out the door, seems a pretty perfect phone in just about every other area.

Go for the one S, i mean the specs on the S3 would look promising but the design of Samsung phones are blah.
I went for the One S, haven't got it yet but don't think I'll regret the decision.
The Galaxy S3 is probably going to have an even larger screen than the S2 had, making it more of a competition for the One X - and way too large for my taste (in fact, the One S is almost too large with 4,3", too, but there's just nothing smaller out there with decent hardware anymore). I've always preferred Sense to TouchWiz, and never much liked Samsung phones in general, even though the Galaxy S2 seems to have brought massive improvements in quality and buyer satisfaction over their earlier offerings.
i was originally also waiting for the gs3 but after mwc i was obsessed with the one s. after having i for 4 days now i don't regret the decision. the cpu is extremly fast and the build quality and design of the device is just extraordinary. samsung's devices on the otger side always fail to impress me on those two points... i prevoiusly had a galaxy s which is a good device but in contrast to the one s it felt cheap and looked ugly...

2 days left to return

Just found out that the galaxy s3 for the US will have the same CPU as
The one x. It will also come with 2gb of ram, which is a real plus. What would you guys do in this situation. I'm still kind of worried about that pentile screen, have to see it in person but I dont have much time left.
The 3 main criteria for me are screen quality, camera quality and feel of the device. I really dislike the screens on Samsung devices. All things considered, I'd be miserable looking at that display as a trade for questionable improvements in speed. A larger SD card, while a great option, isn't something I really need.
Build quality is also a big deal. I like the feel of the one x more than any other Android device I've handled. The S2 variants left me feeling like I had a bargain phone in hand.
I've heard great things about the camera on the S3, but while I'm still having some trouble in generating the type of shots I'd like with the HOX it's an excellent outdoor shooter.

I'd hate to say it, but I'm kind of in the same boat. I was dead set on this phone once Samsung made their announcement (was a toss up between the GNex, the GSIII or the HOX). I figured the awesome dev folks around here would get the phone unlocked so we could eventually run some stock form of ICS (which was a successful bet!). But the issues the phone has (WiFi BS, the lagging in the games, the frustrations with multitasking-esque stuff) are annoying. I was really hoping AT&T would be pushing out their fix soon to address at least the WiFi, but I was hoping for too much I guess. After this phone, I don't think I'll every be buying another subsidized phone again. I'd rather just roll with the Nexus line so I can freely do what I want with the phone.

A lot of the issues with the one x have been fixed with the latest ruu, and some nice tweaks have been made with the few rims we have now. Just wait until we get the kernel source and watch our battery and performance skyrocket. Imo, stick with one x and wait for the goodies to come.

I have a question...are these goodies you are talking about only going to come to those who are rooted? Is there expected to be an official release that fixes some of the issues I am having? My Wifi radio stinks and the cell radio is less than optimum. However, because I love the screen so much, I'm sticking with my HOX for right now.
I got mine at Wal-Mart for $158, and they told me I had 15 days. I wonder if that is just the window to return it and void the contract extension, or if I'm out of my window entirely? Although there is a lot I love about my HOX, That 2GB of RAM really has me squirming, together with the lockdownedness of the HTC.

The leaked 1.85 RUU has an updated radio, which may help your WiFi and cell reception issues. Its impossible to say for sure, but I'd be willing to bet its only a matter of time before this version (or something even newer) is made available as an official OTA.
After owning the Atrix, which had double the RAM and CPU of the original Galaxy S... I'd rather have a better screen.. Sure the One X has software issues like multitask, but we have root and the unlocked bootloader.. CM9 and other great roms will follow (I hope)... I think I'll be sticking w/ the One X. But if u really need the SD card slot then I guess your choice is already made.

This phone os perfect for me. It fits my hand, it's light but not too light and the battery life is amazing.
Just returned it....now it's just a waiting game. Kinda miss the phone already especially going back to the iphone 4's tiny little screen .The specs on the new iphone should be coming out soon too.

The Pentile display killed the SGS3 for me. Don't say "you can't see it" because once you see it, you can't unsee it. It's especially noticeable if you're like me and have been using iPhone 4 and now One X for 2+ years.

agreed on the display. with some of the wifi problems i've been having the last couple of weeks, frankly, i want to return it, but i just can't stand the idea of getting an SGS3 with that damn pentile screen and the overall pukey, pseudo-nature 'inspired' (read: playing the marketable environmental/sustainable/green card) theme. i've go ttill tomorrow to convince myself that the risk of my wifi never working properly isn't enough to make me return this thing...
Return the phone, then drive to different ATT store and get a new one for 30 more days

I need some advise on what to get

OK, so I get an ATT phone upgrade within the next few days - to a few weeks. I have been researching. I cannot spend really any money on a phone. The 1x, and 1VX is basically free.
I have been leaning to one x.
My draw back is I have been reading online that it has a really poor battery, and screen problems where it just goes back. What are the chances of these happening? I haven't seen really anything bad about the VX but it isn't as powerful.
So anyway, what are the chances of one one x going bad? This phone has to last me for 2 years. As a student, I do not have the money to spend anymore than what I already have to. I have AT&T.
Thank you.

It seems silly to me to ask in the one x forum if you should get a one x, we all got one. Battery life is fine here, on sense 16 hours with medium usage, listening to music, some web surf some texting.
Screen just going black? Maybe if you use a ****ty third party charger or one not meant for the phone. There is a bug if you let it discharge completely, it has a hard time coming back on. It's a little late to get a onex though..
I got this at 0 dollars over six months ago. Maybe wait for the next decent 0 dollar android phone. To expect a phone thats about a year old to last 2 more years is silly.

So anyway, what are the chances of one one x going bad? This phone has to last me for 2 years. As a student, I do not have the money to spend anymore than what I already have to. I have AT&T.

-Don't root, unlock, or otherwise try to mod your phone.
-Use only the charger that came with it.
Follow those two, and your chance of a spontaneous brick is very small (and would be covered under warranty anyway--AT&T is very good about replacements).
Thank you for your help everyone. I do appreciate it greatly.
How long does AT&T cover their phones by chance?
How would you compare the reliability, and usability of One X to the One VX? It seems they are similar when I read the specs. Has anyone had both of them? I know the VX is newer.
Don't get either

I'm looking at the price and I recommend instead of getting the one x or vx (get the x if your going to take one of those two), but for the same price you can get an s3 (awesomeness) an optimus g with quad core power and wellishly reviewed by even cnet (the guys who are the most strict reviewers in my opinion with android devices(but let's not into a debate like that.)).
Just saying keep your options open. I like the one x a lot especially rooted but I will admit the s3 and optimus g are better phones overall

Did they fix the slow redraw of the home screen on the Optimus g?

The Optimums G is 100 dollars, and s3 is 50. I don't have the money . I'm a student so it's hard to come by cash at this point lol. It's going to cost me 30 to get the phone turned on as it is . If the s3 was the same price as the one x I would get it in a heart beat . I have a few friends with it.
I thank you.
