Anybody gonna ditch their A2 and jump on this when it comes out next month?
It does look pretty sweet! Although I am still trying to get my brain wrapped around getting started into dev'ing and hacking for the A2, I think I'll stick with this phone. I am torn though, thinking about getting the SGS3 when it comes out, but will still keep the A2.
Question: If the A3 comes with the bootloader locked, and we find a way to get the A2's bootloader unlocked, will it be easier (or theoretically) the same way to go about unlocking the A3's -assuming it comes locked?

Not sure if I'd describe it as "pretty sweet" but I guess it kinda looks updated. I really despise how the on-screen capacitive buttons, launcher dock and first row of apps take up roughly half of the on screen real estate, that's ridiculous. IMO, there's soooo much bezel at the bottom of the device why not put capacitive buttons down there and make use of all that space instead of just slapping a huge AT&T logo down there?
Lastly, if the bootloader is still locked then I imagine the modding community will embrace it after seeing the headache the A2 has caused. I mean, the A2 bootloader still isn't unlocked and here comes the A3 with a locked bootloader? I hope i'm wrong but ICS presents a whole other set of challenges to overcome and the minimal dev support for the A2 surely doesn't inspire confidence that the A3 will be any different. But the LTE, ICS, HD display...pretty cool upgrades I'd say.
So, what's the consensus... everyone leaning toward the SGS3?
I AM getting the SGS III on the 18th. I pre-ordered mine on the 6th... I am hoping to have it in hand late on the 16th or 17th (my local store is great about doing that for me).
The A3 will be the same locked down crap that we have now, and the development of this phone is just so hard to do. Look, I have been working just about every night for at least 1 hour, if not a whole lot more some nights, since ~Oct. 20th to break this bootloader. I have been working on getting a FULL version of CM7 running since Jan/Feb. with little success, due to the craptastic stuff MOTO/AT&T have done to this phone.
I have a XOOM and I LOVE that thing, it was unlocked from day one, there was a command that you run with fastboot to unlock the bootloader. I was hoping that this phone would be more like the XOOM, and we would eventually find an unlocked bootloader, but I am pretty sure that is not happening now.
I was hoping that Google would have smacked MOTO and these cell carriers around a little more, and MADE them (Moto) unlock the bootloader more like the Galaxies have, in that if you do you lose support.
This WILL be my last MOTO device. The A3 looks very promising but is still behind the ONE X and SIII and if what I have been reading is correct MOTO is back to their old ways again. The newest OS updates for the OG Atrix and Photon are supposedly locking the bootloaders back down on those devices!!!
A big no no MOTO !!!
My update isnt until this winter but I can promise it will be on a device that isnt no where as restricted as what we have right now
So, if someone, for example: jimbridgman, could get the bootloader unlocked, would that entice the devs to be more inclined to (at the least) keep the A2 and work development for it?
This has been my fist Motorubbish phone, and was doing just fine with it prior to having gotten the bug to root, and get my n00by white butt into doing everything I can to learn up on how to dev for this phone... but now that I'm all goofy about development and such, I am inclined to keep it and try to help out in that regard.
But, on the opposite side of that coin, I am really considering getting myself a SGS3 and see where that take me. Admittedly, I am so intrigued with dev'ing and hacking and so forth that it's pretty well consumed my free time. Albeit, I am no where near getting started on anything; however, I can't help but to geek out just on the stuff I've seen you guys (devs) have been able to do.
I think I veered off topic, but nonetheless I like the A2, despite its limitations that Moto pushed upon us. However, I will NOT be getting my hands on the A3 when it comes out. Just doesn't seem worth it.
For anyone who is thinking of jumping ship, you might want to sell your Atrix2 before the A3 comes out, otherwise your A2 will be worthless on the used market. Right now you get 250-300 for the A2 on Ebay or craigslist. And if you put the 200 you would spend on the SGS III upgrade, you could get an SGS III, from someone selling a new un-activated SGS III. I have Friends who buy an Iphone at every upgrade that the Iphone gets, and then sells them on the open market at 3 times the upgrade price, then gets a new andriod phone with the profit, and they don't use another upgrade.

Do you have to pay at&T extra money for upgrading or changing your device before 2 years, or something like that? We had the phone less than a year, could I just go and buy another phone from AT&T just like that?

Agreed. While you and a few others have worked hard to get us what we have for the A2, the development really never developed, hehe, pun intended. We all waited with baited breath for the bootloader to be unlocked, hoping it would spur the dev we all hoped for but it seems to be highly unlikely. I def appreciate the devs efforts though, you've made this phone decently enjoyable.

I'd imagine for a little while, but not many devs have this phone so the boost would be short lived, IMO. Too many phones out now that blow this out of the water, and more coming. I think the Atrix 2's opportunity to garner development success has come and gone

You'd have to buy the phone at full price, or add a line to your account to get it for the discounted price.

Yep, if you don't have an upgrade that is your ONLY option, that or like what 916x10 mentioned, about adding a line to your account to get it for 199.
I happen to get an upgrade just about every 6 months, since I have been with AT&T since '99, and I have ALWAYS had upgrade ability in the 6-12 month timeframe, even with a 2 year contract.... similar to the iphones "early upgrade" that you hear about.... I have no clue how, but that is just what I have had for going on 13 years now.
Remember you CAN sell the A2 for a decent price right now, even used they can go for 250-300 since they are a "4g" phone, but that will not last long, if the A3 comes out next month... just think about it... the A2 used price will drop to 99 most likely.
People pay these higher prices because they don't like their phone, or want the latest and greatest, and either don't want to use an upgrade, or don't have one.
Anyone can do this, and AT&T will not charge you anything, since all you have to do is put your SIM in the new phone, and that is pretty much it. Now with an LTE phone, you may have to go to a store and update your plan, but even still the worst they will charge you is a 25 dollar "upgrade" cost.

Oh... I see. I used my upgrade for this Atrix 2, that I got for free too. That's very cool that you can get upgrades every 6 months. I wonder if there is any way for other people to do the same. I would like to see a newer cell phone, but with this economy I cannot see myself spending that amount of money. Oh well... :/
Off topic but about bootloaders..
before this phone i had an xperia x10 and development went well.the bootloader wasnt unlocked untill the very end when i had that phone.
My question is..how is it we were running custom kernels ,roms like cm7 with its own kernel ..without an unlocked bootloader at that time?
I remember outta nowhere the bootloader was cracked and nothing major came from it.at that time i didnt even know what the purpose was as we were already flashing custom kernels and roms that use them. All that changed was no more bootloader logo lol.
Now today i know alittle bit more and i think back and wonder why it was we didnt require an unlocked bootloader to run custom kernels ...
Jim.maybe you know?..

Yep. I too had an X10, the dev on that thing was ridiculous! I never unlocked the bootloader but did all the other mods I could. I didn't understand all the fuss about the bootloader when I first got my A2 but apparently Motorola does things a little differently. IIRC, some of the x10 guys helped get our dev off the ground with their help on our recovery.
Those guys have some pretty cool ICS roms now...I was running Wolfbreak and man it was nice.
i like A2 better~!
i like A2 better~!
Sweet jumpin' Jeebus! The SGS3 is hitting benchmark scores of at/around 13000? Can that be right?
That. Is. Ree-diculous-ness! I really want one. Errgh...
I have been stuck on the Samsung Charge for VZW for a year now and I have an upgrade avilable. My three options are the Droid Razr MAXX, HTC ReZound, or staying with my unrooted Charge for a few more month and hopefully get the Samsung S III. My Charge is a refreshed (as they call it now) and i still have problems with it. I use my phone for music, web, and RDC (Remote Desktop Connections). Which one should I choose? I have never been this unsure about a phone. Mainly because I haven't found any good reports about roots for the first two.
Thank you for your assistance,
Top Ramen
so i guess no one likes the choices i have either.... lol
S3
what do yo mean "get" ? Someone will give it to you ? Your company ?
Galaxy S3 seems the obvious most interesting choice, but why would you wait ? It's out since long.
Sorry,
Get as in have available for an upgrade choice. Sorry. I am a Third party (Indirect) Retailer for VZW so I wont have access to the S III until a month or so after it release. So far its not out in the USA for VZW yet. At least not in my store. After going to a VZW store yesterday I am leaning towards the Razr Maxx mainly for the battery life. (Bad at remembering to charge phones).
I think S3 is worth the wait
I will give u an advice....... JUST DONT BUY A MOTOROLA device unless you want to wait 3 years to get an update
