[Q] Small Question - General Questions and Answers

I have been stuck on the Samsung Charge for VZW for a year now and I have an upgrade avilable. My three options are the Droid Razr MAXX, HTC ReZound, or staying with my unrooted Charge for a few more month and hopefully get the Samsung S III. My Charge is a refreshed (as they call it now) and i still have problems with it. I use my phone for music, web, and RDC (Remote Desktop Connections). Which one should I choose? I have never been this unsure about a phone. Mainly because I haven't found any good reports about roots for the first two.
Thank you for your assistance,
Top Ramen

so i guess no one likes the choices i have either.... lol

S3
what do yo mean "get" ? Someone will give it to you ? Your company ?
Galaxy S3 seems the obvious most interesting choice, but why would you wait ? It's out since long.

Sorry,
Get as in have available for an upgrade choice. Sorry. I am a Third party (Indirect) Retailer for VZW so I wont have access to the S III until a month or so after it release. So far its not out in the USA for VZW yet. At least not in my store. After going to a VZW store yesterday I am leaning towards the Razr Maxx mainly for the battery life. (Bad at remembering to charge phones).

I think S3 is worth the wait

I will give u an advice....... JUST DONT BUY A MOTOROLA device unless you want to wait 3 years to get an update

Need advice... time to renew my plan, need to select a new phone

Hi All,
To clarify, I used the search engine but didn't found any response to my question.
I have a Sony Xperia Play R800a and my 18 month contract just expired, my carrier just called me to ask for a renewal, they offered me the MOTOROLA RAZR HD for 200 USD on 18 month contract of 25 USD per month including data.
My question is... is it a good deal?
I was about to pull the trigger on the Galaxy Nexus on google play... but then I heard about Nexus 4 coming and decided to wait for it... after seeing the nexus 4... I was ready to pull the trigger again, but today I got the call from the carrier... and started to have second thoughts on it.
I have compared the Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S3, Nexus 4, and RAZR HD, so far It seems Nexus 4 seems as the best deal followed closely by the S3... but I hate the non-expandable storage on the Nexus 4 and the price on the S3.
The thing is... if I sign again with my carrier I will save 150 instantly, (also the 200 USD down payment can be paid on a 12 month interest free plan)
Dear XDA member please let me know your feedback on this 18 month long choice... If you can suggest me which device is better for the price and also giving me more options... If there are any...
Thanks for your help.

I owned the GS3, GNex, and RAZR HD maxx.
Of the 3, I would go with the Razr HD in the end. GNex after that. GS3 last. I can't speak for the Nexus 4, but I can't see it being that different than the GNex besides a respectable hardware buff since the GNex will get AOSP 4.2 in the near future.
Stock firmware on the S3 is complete crap IMO. A bunch of useless fluff and bloat, just flat out crappy. The hardware is nice, however.
GNex is great simply because it's stock AOSP. I'm assuming I don't need to explain why that's a good thing.
Razr HD is really impressive. ALMOST stock android, but not quite. The "Blur" intrusion is very much reduced compared to my previous motorola device (original Atrix 4G). Really the only major motorola influence I see are the stock mail app (not gmail), the settings menu, gallery, camera, and a widget or two. The dialer is a a bit different than AOSP but I can live with it.
Sure, most GS3s have an unlockable bootloader, but in my experiences most of the roms are plagued by bugs, however few and unobtrusive they may be. I've never ran a custom rom that just worked perfectly. And lets be honest, none of them provide any breakthrough features above and beyond the stock-from-google AOSP you get from a pure nexus device. Just my opinion.
If I could, I would run with the Nexus 4. But the lack of LTE was the big deal breaker for me. I won't get timely updates (ever?) on my RAZR HD. But that's ok. I've lost most interest in flashing custom ROMS and now I just want a smooth running device that works and I'm very happy with the RAZR HD.
I'll be the first to flop down $$$ for the next LTE Nexus device when it comes out, however.
Frankly all the devices you listed are great in their own right. Really it all comes down to your preferences. Fan of pure google AOSP? GO with Nexus. Like flashing custom ROMS? Nexus or GS3 are both good. Expandable storage? Removable battery? LTE? Just figure out the most important must-have features you require in a device and go with it.
Thanks holtenc,
I just checked with my carrier today, and apparently the RAZR HD is my only "real" option.
I asked about the Gnex, because I wanted to try "pure" android, but they told me they are low in stock and that Samsung will not replenish their inventory (maybe because of the Nexus 4 they have started to fade the Gnex out) but that if I really want one I should pay 550 USD and sign a 2 year contract... That definitely take the Gnex out of budget.
About the Galaxy S3, I need to pay 650 USD and a 18 month contract.... so same al Gnex... out of budget.
About Nexus 4, they don't have it on stock yet... it may take some time, but they told me he will be priced similar to Gnex. :S
I live in Mexico and we are not allowed to purchase devices on the google play store, so I tried the US store (using a VPN) and it is out of stock :S...
I guess the universe is pushing me to get the RAZR HD
Thanks
Have you tried places like swappa?

nope, never heard of it... I will look at it... thanks for de advice!
Cool. I was on last week looking at GNexs and they had some for $200-350 U.S.

Remember that if you upgrade with the discounted price, you will lose unlimited data if you had it, in case you are concerned about that.
I just bought the Razr Maxx HD and I am digging the phone so far. I have charged it once in the last 3 days with battery to spare. I had the Galaxy S3 but exchanged it for the Maxx HD. The GS3 felt more like a toy rather than something that I would carry with me everyday. The glossy and rounded form just wasn't my thing. The Maxx HD feels like a real phone and the UI is as close to AOSP (which you will get on the Nexus) as you are going to get from any other phone. Its sort of like holding a real handgun after playing with a water pistol. Touchwiz (Samsung) and Sense (HTC) are bloated and ugly.
Good luck with your decision.

Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Note 3 verizon

PrDog, you should get a commish from Jtag for pimpin their name, cause they just made $60 big ones from me. That said, I'm torn... I have owned the Galaxy Note 2 for less than 24 hours and already love it WAAAY more than the GS3 (which is still a king in my book).
They are pretty darn positive (their words) that they can fix my shiz. I'm hoping to either get the gs3 back and sell it along with my badass tablet (asus transformer infinity) to pay for the GN2. I'm not gonna lie, I LOVE THE GN2!!!!
My other option is to get the GS3 back and since I'll be available for upgrade in August, wait for the GN3... Just wanted to hear some thoughts...What would some of you do???

Well Josh is actually one of us and volunteered his services for the S3 unlock testing when first released.
I would hold off and wait. The gn3 will be like the n2 but more of a beast. Also there will be an htc mega one and whatever moto decides to release.
Im holding off until the fall and see what new devices will be launching for the holiday.

Still not rooting though PRdog... lol
I currently have the s2. Almost picked up a N2 the other day for a decent price but the guy backed out on me. I'm guessing someone made him a better offer. I'm also available for an upgrade in August and will wait for the next great thing. Thats if i decide to stay with verizon. I might go back to sprint. I don't think verizon coverage is any better in my area and it was nice not having to worry about how much data I used.

Is it still worth buying it?

Hey guys, I need your help.
I need a new phone, wnated to buy the Nexus 5, but I think I don't have enough money for it.
So I found the Razr HD and wanted to ask, if it's still worth buying it. Or should i get a Huawei Ascend p6?
Or do u have other recommendations?
Thanks for your help!

Depends on how you want to use it. If you don't care about rooting and possibly unlocking the boot loader, then I guess it's worth it, if it's free. However, you can only root as long as it hasn't had the latest OTA applied to it. You can only unlock the bootloader if it's never taken an OTA after 9.16
Otherwise, I would probably stay away from it. It's a great phone, but it's kind of old. I guess it also depends on what you currently have.
In the end, the problem is it's all a crap shoot on which version of the software you'll get. You just never know what you get. If you do end up getting it, do NOT take any OTAs that it might be suggesting. First, discover what version you have. If you have 9.16 or earlier, then you can unlock the bootlader and I suggest doing that first and foremost. Of course, your warranty is null and void at that point, but most of us don't care anyways.
If it's before 9.30, then you might still be able to at least root it, but you won't be able to unlock the bootloader.
Again, it's all a crap shoot on what version you'll get. I got my phone a few months back as a warranty replacement for my OG Droid RAZR MAXX. I got lucky that it came with 9.16 and I was able to unlock the bootloader. But, I was lucky. Others have gotten it with the latest OTA which pretty much screws them over from being able to root and unlock the bootloader. Others, like me, have gotten lucky.
Heck, I didn't even know I was getting an HD until it arrived. The first thing I did was fire it up, saw it had an OTA available and I promptly said no to it. I then went to all my usual forum haunts to research the phone and see if root was available. Was I ever happy to see I could potentially unlock the bootloader! Even happier when I was able to do so.
Considering he's talking about the Nexus 5, I don't think the bootloader is going to be an issue. Only the Verizon Razr HD's were affected by that.
Second, its still a great phone. The version of Jelly Bean it has now is sluggish unless you use Nova, but I'm assuming once it gets the Kit Kat update (which Motorola has promised for all variants) it'll be fine. I'd get it again if I were to choose, even though the Nexus is obviously a better phone. This is because it'll soon have Kit Kat, and the battery life is much better than that of the Nexus.

OP, you should tell us what Verizon (if that is your carrier) is offering you so we can help you choose. Off-contract? Two year renewal? What's going on?
As for the phone, you can do better. I have a Razr HD and while I love it, I'm starting to get feelings of exclusion because this phone was released late 2012. It is now 2014, and the Android world is learning to sprint away from old hardware. What I would suggest is the Moto X. It's like Verizon's apology for being the only carrier that doesn't have the Nexus 5.
As for "free," don't get your hopes up. With you looking at the Razr HD, I'm guessing your carrier is Verizon. They might be offering a phone for $0 or $.99, but there is always more money they need from you. Activation fee, renewal fee, so on. I don't want to discourage you from getting a nice new phone, but be realistic about costs. The worst of it is getting your hands on the phone, the rest is just budgeting the bills.
Anyways, I ultimately recommend getting the Moto X over the Nexus or the Razr HD. It would be around $130 total after the fees; my roommate just got his ordered two days ago off a two-year renewal. After the $50 mail-in rebate, it will reduce his cost in the end. Roughly $80 for a Moto X.
Maybe you should by a Moto G. I have two of it. The Moto G is a great phone and costs not too much.

I think you should buy it. I have one for 1 year now and bought another new one few days ago at bargain price. It's still one of the best phones overall and + it will get updated to KitKat. Quality and looks is still unfathomable for other manufacturers. Performance and battery is excellent.
And you can unlock bootloader and fool around with custom roms which work great BTW.
Don't buy that chinese trash... :victory:
I'd say it's still worth it as I just got my RAZR HD 1.5 weeks ago in trade for my Note 2
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk
Depending on the price I would still recommend buying an XT925. It's a good phone which will get KitKat and it can still do all you want. In it's price range I think still one of the best out there.
Now that root has been achieved on the latest OTA (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758), I'd say this is possibly more worth it than it was before root was achieved.
I don't know if would buy it with moto get being a sweet deal now. However the RAZR is great. I really like mine and see no reason to change it for a new in the foreseeable future. It's has many merits where it really counts. Eg battery life and build quality.
I just got my Razr HD a couple weeks ago in exchange for my Note II and it's definitely a worthy device still. With the stock battery life I'm getting and switching over to Nova Launcher I see no need to root and I can just run 4.1.2 until such time that we get 4.4 and I'm happy.
still a great device to use..
♦ has kitkat support and i'm sure will get future update through cm too.
♦ still runs latest games pretty smooth !
♦ beats most of the mid-high end smartphones out there in terms of battery life.
♦ has a superb build quality.
so why not ?
If the price is right go for it, it's a great phone.
I got my Razr Maxx HD via Swappa about a 10 months ago and it's the same as the Razr HD with a bigger battery.
I love my Razr, it's rooted, unlocked boot loader, no VZW bloat, running CM 11 (4.4.2)

What phone to get next?

I'm on my Galaxy s3 running cyanogen mod 11 but I'm sort of hankering for a new device with hopefully better reception. Since I'm grandfathers unlimited and use more then 10gb a month I want to find a good off-contract device to buy I was quite excited about the One Plus One but I just found out it's not going to work on Verizon What options do I have? The only other phone that seems like it might be a good deal is the Moto X+1 that's suppose to be coming out soon for around $399 off-contract.. What is everyone else doing? I'm considering jumping ship all together to T-mobile.
considering the Moto X+1 hasnt even been announced you would be waiting quite awhile for that. you could just buy a used phone that is newer then the S3 or keep holding out for something that meets your requirements. im grandfathered like you and wouldnt change carriers cause of my data usage and also the coverage, Verizon is the best for me.

First thing: if you want better reception, try a Touchwiz ROM instead of CM. I love the AOSP look and feel but the sad truth is that on this phone, a Touchwiz ROM will always have better reception that an AOSP one thanks to the fact that Samsung has never made the RIL available to devs.
I'm in the same boat and there aren't many options out there if you want something that gives you the option to install your own ROM (has a root and/or bootloader unlock method available). My wife's GS3 died a few months ago and we got here the original Moto X, its reception is better than my GS3. Of course, the most recent firmware version of it can't be rooted and this late in the phone's life it doesn't look like it will be. But it is relatively inexpensive if you don't want to wait for the X+1. Jumping carriers is always a nice thought but I've been on all the major carriers at one point or another and Verizon is still the best when it comes to coverage. They have to be, otherwise there's no way they'd get away with offering the lackluster range of phones that they do.
What I'm doing: hanging on to the GS3 and running a TW ROM, waiting for a new device which:
1. Is a significant jump in specs from the GS3. The GS5 doesn't qualify IMO, I don't want a screen any bigger than the GS3.
2. Has a root method available.
3. Has a removable battery and microsd card.
Of course, not many devices match that description.

[Q] Going to Verizon... Which phone should I get?

Title says it all. I am switching to Verizon this week and am wondering which phone I should get. I am thinking the s5 but just want to see if there is something I am missing that they may have out that AT&T doesn't or if there is something releasing very soon worth waiting for.
Thanks!

if the moto x is still there i would Grab that, im in love with mine and have always loved my motorola line (OG Droid 1/OG Droid 2/ Droid X/ Droid Razer) for performance but not (for verizon also) for the locked bootloaders and terrible time with trying to root them and such. note if you are gonna root the moto x it does not have complete root i think and will only work on 4.4.3 and under. we are currently updated to 4.4.4. the moto x is a great phone even though its specs are last years (free on a 2 year contract which i got in may) it still BLOWS AWAY Games and the performance is Great. the only bad thing i can say about it is the battery life is a little on the low side but can last you about a day or two with mild use. also for some reason i get photos from people late. other than that its a great phone, but if you are for developing and looking to root/flash roms on it please get a different carrier other than Verizon or AT&T, they lock their bootloaders.
