One day my Nexus 5 just started to act weird when it came to signal. Signal would drop every few seconds to no bars and then would come back. I seem to be getting less signal everywhere. My phone seems to rarely connect to data now when the screen is off and even when on it takes a while and sometimes I even have to put it in airplane mode and then back out to get it to work! Texts never come in at the right time, they take up to 10 minutes longer. My texts will fail to send at times until I reboot or go in and out of airplane mode. Calls won't dial sometimes and I have to give it a few attempts even when I'm in a good signal area. What is the problem?
Are you on the stock firmware or have you flashed another rom? I would go back to stock and see if the problem is still there. If it is then you may have a hardware issue.

Are you absolutely sure that it has nothing to do with your carrier?

Quite sure since it has been going on for weeks and I've never had this happen with any other phone and even this phone up to a certain point.

Having a real hard time withbswitching between wifi and 3g, anyone help? When I turn off wifi after a few hours of use, the mobile data wont come back without a reboot. I have tried cycling airplane mode, and it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Only way to get back is with a reboot.

does it happen regardless of where you are? my first charge had data issues, it would only grab carrier data 1 out of maybe 10 times i rebooted and/or turned wifi off, and when it did, it took hours. replacement device still has trouble reacquiring carrier data at my home, but it's fine everywhere else. fwiw, when i researched my issue, i saw tons of anecdotal reports of people having their sim replaced by vzw and not having any further data issues.
Thanks for the reply. It seems to happen regardless of location unfortunately. I am trying to use Llama or Y5 to control wifi but its not very effective when 3g wont come back on!

What have you done to your phone? what is your current setup? Maybe it's time for you to flash back to factory stock to see if the issue resolved and take it from there.
You don't happen to be using juice defender or something like that? When I used it, I was having all sorts of problems getting data to come back on. Ditched JD and all is well.
I use Tasker to switch between 4g and Wifi. I haven't experienced any issues even though I switch back and forth several times a day. Could your problem be a defective phone or the radio firmware? Personally I run a rooted Stock EP4D and have no complaints.
same experience for me when using Auto Wifi on eclipse.
no problems after switching back to Tweakstock
Hi Everyone,
Really frustrated with one problem I'm having. This seems to happen with every ROM (I'm currently use leedroid). Basically, I have wifi at home. When I leave the house, I'm out of wifi range. Then the phone doesn't respond, I don't get calls, etc. This could be for 5 minutes or 50 minutes. I have to wait until until the phone connects to 3G before it becomes responsive. I can't receive any calls or sms during this time. Has anyone else had this issue?
Thanks!!!

Sorry, never heard of that happening. If it happens with every rom and you have tried different radios... I would try un-rooting and going back to stock. If that fixes it, re run that hack it to get back to root. If not... I would definitely look to getting a replacement asap!

When I first got my Nexus 5 I thought Hangouts was a bit buggy. When sending texts (SMS) it would sometimes try and try to send texts to no avail and other times work fine. Signal in the notification bar was fine so I assumed there was something wrong with Hangouts.
Since then (after rooting the phone with CF auto root - don't think this has anything to to with the problem) I have noticed that at the times my phone won't send texts, in the setting pull down section it shows no signal whilst still showing signal in the notification bar. I have also noticed that mobile standby uses a large proportion of my battery.
I will upload screen shots from my phone soon.
The only thing I could think of that might be causing it is that the SIM card I'm using has been cut down from normal size to micro size.
I just wondered if anyone know's what's wrong or could suggest any fixes?
Thanks
Also forgot to mention turning Aeroplane Mode on and off seems to fix the problem temporarily which is why I don't think there's a problem with the SIM card.

I observed something similar since unlocking and rooting with wugfresh toolkit yesterday. The mobile signal just drops completely for 10s, then comes back. Mostly happens a few minutes after boot. No idea what is going on there.

When I'm at home mines doing it constantly too, and I haven't rooted yet . There's not brilliant signal here, but forcing onto 2g mode worked absolutely fine on my nexus 4.I'm considering returning it, it must be something wrong with the phone, unless the firmware is dodgy?
Just got the phone yesterday, and I have been experiencing the same problem while I was at work. I would turn the phone off and on again and the problem would be fixed, but then later would just stop working.
When I got home from work, (and ever since then) it has been fine. I am a little concerned.
I to sometimes have this issue, and receiving texts late also. The weird thing is signal bars are still full...
Are all of you using battery guru like the op?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Nope
I have this same issue, it's really weird.
I was on a call and the call was fine. As soon as I hung up I looked at my phone and it said I had no signal, but my signal bar on the notification bar showed a fine signal. Very weird to see a good signal in the notification bar, but no signal in the toggle section.
I can get a signal back by either going into airplane mode, toggling back and forth between LTE and 3G or restarting the phone.
There's a thread on the Google forums here: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/T5ey4dttBOA
Although the last Google reply was referring to APN settings, however this seems to have been refuted by the users.
It would be nice to get this narrowed down between hardware and software. If it's hardware we'd obviously want to exchange.
This is a huge issue too since you can just be sitting around not knowing you have no signal.

The old radio works fine. Try this thread:

I don't know.
As with all updates I ever do, I reset my phone to factory (wipe) and I find my radio as well as WiFi better than before.
In my garage I would always get 1 bar or less (switches back to LTE) now I get a steady two bars in the same location.

Why not? Because he'll have to download all the apps and do his settings again? I find that some stuff I don't need anymore after some updates so instead of having software on my taking over functions that the built in stuff works just as good or better. I would format for EVERY Nightly on CyanogenMod at one point, my phone doesn't contain anything that I gotta have and setting up the phone again is part of what makes it fun because i'll see new stuff and changes when going through the setup again. If you just flash over and over and over eventually you'll start getting issues (shouldn't happen but it does).

While I agree it may not be practical, its something I've done on every machine I've ever owned any time an update is done.
I look at it this way, and although it may not be true for android and Linux its what is burned in me:
Anytime you do an uninstall of a windows program, there are always files left behind, registry entries that remain or invalid paths etc that are no longer required. So in essence not a real uninstall of the old stuff.
Over time your system gets sluggish and doing a full format of your PC gets it flying again.
Sure it's a pain to do but it works.
Now again I don't know if the same situation occurs with Linux or Android, but most of my stuff is backed up to my networked hard drive so really the only thing that takes time is setting up my home screen again.
Further, I'll probably end up doing the same thing once the full factory image is posted.
But I don't know, that's just me I guess.

Reception for me is just the same as before. I haven't really seen any noticeable decrease or increase.
Both radios still drop signal
Sent from **Nexus 5 sucks**
I have noticed that my LTE reception is worse than pre-OTA. And while I agree doing a clean install is great and I don't really mind re-downloaded apps or restoring from TB. The real problem with this phone is that there is no SD card, so I don't want to have to worry about all the stuff on the internal storage. Of course I have my photo's setup to copy to the cloud but stuff that I download here or there isn't and I like having my photos on my storage until necessary to clean up for more storage. In the past I always had the phones memory plust a 32GB card and the card never got wiped when doing clean installs or factory resets.
My signal definitely appears worse. Couldn't this be just appearance though? I thought in the changelog for 4.4.1 it says that they revised how the signal bars scale. If I go to the battery screen, it says that I am running at a higher time without signal, but my battery life isn't affected by it. I wonder if this is just some bug or related to how the signal is being reported, or if this actually reflects what your cell phone is picking up and what it isn't. For example, I have sometimes read my time without signal being reported at 50% or higher, but I am still able to make calls and receive texts, etc. etc. Therefore that leads me to believe this might just be cosmetic?
Does anyone have any real metrics to prove that the signal is actually worse or are you going by how many signal bars your phone has at the time?
I'm not saying anyone is wrong here, I am just trying to get an accurate assessment of the issue. I have noticed the same thing you guys have in that the signal that is being reported is worse than what I used to have, but I am hesitant to blindly flash back to the old radio not knowing exactly what the issue is. If the signal really is that much worse, shouldn't I be getting much worse battery life? Shouldn't my phone be heating up trying to boost power to the antenna? Neither of those cases are true.
I had to flash back to the pre-4.4.1 radio since on Sprint, LTE signal strength was anywhere from 3 to 10 dB worse, after the update.

First off I would like to say I love the phone EXCEPT for these two major problems. First one....I will pull the phone out of my pocket and it will have put itself into airplane mode. It will cut the bluetoooth on and sometimes cut the location off. I have had it where the screen is on when I pull it out of my pocket and sometimes it will still be locked and this happens. Today it cut the flashlight on and the screen was still locked. I use a pin code for my lock screen. Second and the major one is dropped calls. I have probably made 13 calls and 7 have dropped. On one of them it dropped 3 times on the same person. Sometimes when I pull the phone away from my face after a dropped call or a successful call, the notification bar will be pulled down. Its like the proximity sensor isn't working. I use cricket and have had none of these problems on my S6. I guess when I get time tomorrow I'm going to factory reset but I was just wondering if anyone else was having these problems? Maybe I got a dud.
Maybe your issue is related to mine.
Press the top left of your phone, right next to the power button, a bit hard. Does it make it go on/off? If so, maybe the force when it's in your pants is causing it to turn on and do random functions.

Just did a factory reset. I will find out in the next couple of days if it worked. Will post results. Hope it does. Like it as much as my S6.....except the camera. The camera isn't bad but the S6 is great.
does the factory reset default back to the original out of box software or does it default to the latest version?

It's going to reset to the last ROM that was installed on the phone. Once you update the phone you can't go back. Well you can but you need a custom recovery and the original ROM to flash.
I did the factory reset and seemed to help my problem. No pocket weirdness and calls seem to be fine. Will give it a few more days and post results.
Dropped call
I agree with your second issues: dropped calls.
Even i'm facing the same issue. More than 10 calls were dropped in a day, did factory reset - worked fine for 2-3 days and same issues appeared.
it seems to me something with signal issues.
One of the post in another thread points out the signal issues with the phone.

Not sure if it makes a difference but I use Nova Launcher as my launcher and Rocketdialer as my dialer....and I'm getting normal behavior. The signal is slightly weaker than my nexus 4 was giving me in wcdma mode but that's the only quirk I've noticed.
