Reception problems on 4.4.1 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ever since I updated to the newest version as well as the new radio and modem, I get worse reception than before in SOME places.
I don't know what to so to improve it...

The old radio works fine. Try this thread:

I don't know.
As with all updates I ever do, I reset my phone to factory (wipe) and I find my radio as well as WiFi better than before.
In my garage I would always get 1 bar or less (switches back to LTE) now I get a steady two bars in the same location.

Why not? Because he'll have to download all the apps and do his settings again? I find that some stuff I don't need anymore after some updates so instead of having software on my taking over functions that the built in stuff works just as good or better. I would format for EVERY Nightly on CyanogenMod at one point, my phone doesn't contain anything that I gotta have and setting up the phone again is part of what makes it fun because i'll see new stuff and changes when going through the setup again. If you just flash over and over and over eventually you'll start getting issues (shouldn't happen but it does).

While I agree it may not be practical, its something I've done on every machine I've ever owned any time an update is done.
I look at it this way, and although it may not be true for android and Linux its what is burned in me:
Anytime you do an uninstall of a windows program, there are always files left behind, registry entries that remain or invalid paths etc that are no longer required. So in essence not a real uninstall of the old stuff.
Over time your system gets sluggish and doing a full format of your PC gets it flying again.
Sure it's a pain to do but it works.
Now again I don't know if the same situation occurs with Linux or Android, but most of my stuff is backed up to my networked hard drive so really the only thing that takes time is setting up my home screen again.
Further, I'll probably end up doing the same thing once the full factory image is posted.
But I don't know, that's just me I guess.

I also did a clean flash.. In some places I get better radio but mostly it's worse.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Reception for me is just the same as before. I haven't really seen any noticeable decrease or increase.

Both radios still drop signal
Sent from **Nexus 5 sucks**

I have noticed that my LTE reception is worse than pre-OTA. And while I agree doing a clean install is great and I don't really mind re-downloaded apps or restoring from TB. The real problem with this phone is that there is no SD card, so I don't want to have to worry about all the stuff on the internal storage. Of course I have my photo's setup to copy to the cloud but stuff that I download here or there isn't and I like having my photos on my storage until necessary to clean up for more storage. In the past I always had the phones memory plust a 32GB card and the card never got wiped when doing clean installs or factory resets.

My signal definitely appears worse. Couldn't this be just appearance though? I thought in the changelog for 4.4.1 it says that they revised how the signal bars scale. If I go to the battery screen, it says that I am running at a higher time without signal, but my battery life isn't affected by it. I wonder if this is just some bug or related to how the signal is being reported, or if this actually reflects what your cell phone is picking up and what it isn't. For example, I have sometimes read my time without signal being reported at 50% or higher, but I am still able to make calls and receive texts, etc. etc. Therefore that leads me to believe this might just be cosmetic?
Does anyone have any real metrics to prove that the signal is actually worse or are you going by how many signal bars your phone has at the time?
I'm not saying anyone is wrong here, I am just trying to get an accurate assessment of the issue. I have noticed the same thing you guys have in that the signal that is being reported is worse than what I used to have, but I am hesitant to blindly flash back to the old radio not knowing exactly what the issue is. If the signal really is that much worse, shouldn't I be getting much worse battery life? Shouldn't my phone be heating up trying to boost power to the antenna? Neither of those cases are true.

I had to flash back to the pre-4.4.1 radio since on Sprint, LTE signal strength was anywhere from 3 to 10 dB worse, after the update.

GPS Not Working / Random Restarting enough to send it back?

Has anybody else sent their G2X back because of random restarts and the GPS not working correctly? I haven't had any of the other issues some of you guys are having and my battery life seems pretty good. I can't complain about that.
But I often use the GPS on my phone for work. It was great on my Nexus One and never failed me. I tried to use it on my G2X the other day and it was horrible. It took minutes to load and finally when it seemed like it was going to work, it was real lousy. It wouldn't keep up with where I was driving, so the directions were real sloppy and inaccurate.
As far as the random restarts, that might be normal..? It's a smartphone which is like a mini computer, so I think restarts might be fairly normal. I seen a restart the other day and I seen 2 more today.
My question is do these seem like software issues? If so, i'm willing to wait for an update to fix these things. I like the phone a lot and i'm lucky to have no screen or battery issues. So I don't wanna risk sending it back only to have those issues.
My GPS is rock solid. It is slow to start sometimes but my old phone was the Vibrant and ANYYHING is better than that. Don't have any restart issues. You should do an audit of the apps you have on your phone.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
What exactly do you mean by an audit of my apps? Do you really think any of the other apps are messing with the GPS?
I'm debating doing a format. I'm not sure whether or not it would help anything.
We have the same issue, everything (dialy used apps) works except for the GPS. I can't even see GPS icon even after toggle ON and running GPS toolbox. Though, sometimes if I am lucky, after Rom Manager Fix Permissions and restart it works. But only if am lucky.
Maybe it is a software issue or permissions issue, but I am hoping that this will be fixed with the long awaited update.

Return it. Phone should never reboot. Android runs on Linux which is designed to be up 24/7 365. GPS should lock quickly.

I called about my GPS and reboot problems and they are sending me a replacement g2x. The tech rep did say that he would check about their exchange program eligibility where I can exchange for an equal or better phone under warrranty. He said there were no phones that were of equal value currently released. He told me if I call tomorrow when the sensation comes out that it may be an option. For now I'm going with another g2x but to answer the original question, GPS and revolts is a good enough reason to send it back.

My GPS locks up almost daily now. The GPS icon doesnt show... I think it's an app issue (gas buddy) that's not compatible... A reboot fixes the gps for about a day.

I have problems with GPS also, it's horrible at times. Tonight it took two reboots before it worked, and even then it was flaky at best. My Nexus One was great prior to 2.3, at which point it was unreliable also, but not like this.
Basically I have to reboot daily or else GPS won't work when I want it. And all I run on it that uses GPS is Maps, My Tracks and when I'm attempting to fix it, GPS Status, which sometimes just comes up as a blank screen. Sometimes it takes two reboots to get GPS to work, which is just odd, but I've seen that twice.
Also, I have witnessed at least 5 spontaneous reboots, and I've had the phone just a few weeks.

The retail for the G2x is $499 and that matches the Samsung Galaxy S 4G. Would've matched the G2, but reports have it as discontinued. The Sensation is 10% more expensive.

Battery life worse since 2.11.605.5

Am I the only one who's got worse battery life since the update?
I keep my brightness set low, bluetooth and GPS are off. My mail and Twitter are set to update manually. Weather updates every four hours, and I use only a few widgets (the weather clock and a few that toggle settings). I've got a solid LTE signal.
Before the update (and even after the 2.11.605.3 Gingerbread update that I'd got before Verizon and HTC pulled it), I could take my phone off the charger when I woke up, use it moderately, and still be in the green when I'd put it back on the charger at bed time. If I used it a bit more, maybe I'd be in the yellow, but I'd never had a problem going 18 hours or so on a single full charge.
Since the update, though, my phone can't get through a day without recharging in the middle. Even if I don't use it. Just sitting on my desk, untouched, I'm losing about 11% an hour.
Chances are the phone will re adjust through battery cycles. Also there are power saving options now if you go to the power setting. The efficiency setting works very well. Other than that I would wait a little longer before going about any tinkering.
And one more thing. You don't have a task manager do you? If so get rid of it. Android is incredibly efficient on managing its ram and tasks.

LTE? You're running 4G all the time? I wouldn't make it past late afternoon if I didn't toggle the LTE off most of the time and use CMDA (3G).
I'm stock and also having horrible battery life since the last update. Like 5 hours worth of battery with little use before I'm in the yellow. I'm giving up on 4G and switching over to 3G for good... maybe that will last longer as it did in the past
I'm tempted to do a factory reset

If my assumption is wrong on your knowledge of factory resets, i apologize and i'm not trying to insult your knowledge of these phones. That being said, factory reset won't allow you to revert to pre 605.5 software, as it just wipes the data completely and you stay on the same 605.5 you are on. If you are rooted already, make a backup and flash back an older release of the software that you are happy with. If you aren't rooted, now is a good time and then to revert back to past software haha
Hmm..sounds like someone should get an extended battery.I have one and never had a problem before or after gb.

Insult not taken... I'm well aware of what a factory reset is. And I don't care to root - been rooted before. Battery was much better before... so I figure its probably an app causing the drain - not playing nice with the update. A reset could remedy that.

I'm with mdeblaz. Getting through the day on the stock battery hasn't been an issue until the update. And I'll buy a new phone before I buy a ginormous battery for this one. I've had a couple of HTC phones now, and the Thunderbolt has been the most problematic for me. Maybe I'll sell it back to Verizon and get the Rezound. If the battery issue doesn't clear up on it's own, it's either going to be new phone or (for the first time since I started using Android phones) flashing a new ROM.
Anyone know a good Gingerbread ROM for the Thunderbolt that has Sense 3? I know I'm a minority, but I keep buying HTC phones because I actually like Sense.

Yep tried that. Everything is connecting tight.
I dropped the phone the day I started having the issue but it was only about a foot long drop, and the bottom of the phone hit the ground first.
Could that be affecting anything? I dropped my iPhone 3GS more times than i've dropped my Inspire and i never had trouble with the wifi in that. Not trying to knock the Inspire because i couldnt stand anything about the iPhone when i had it.

No that is a nand backup. It backs up your whole rom.
I usually stick to sense ROMs, but this should be universal. once I had that problem and flashed a new kernel and it was better than ever. Might want to give that a shot if your reflash doesn't work or you don't want to reflash.

Ok I'll give you that. I have also dropped mine. I'm just throwing out possible options for him. Possibly his battery jarred and a config file in his kernel controlling his wifi power corrupted. or something got moved and is interfering with the wifi signal but his computer antenna is strong enough compensate. Yes highly unlikely, I know. Like I said, just trying to expend all possible options. Sorry if that came off as rude or disrespectful to your senior member status, it was not intended in that manor.

That's actually a pretty harsh and rude assumption from a senior member. Just because i'm not up to speed on the development portion of my device does not mean I don't take care of it. I've done a router and modem reboot a few times now (when I thought that was cause of the issue).
Haven't done the IP release and re negotiation before.
I have a fix for dropping your phone. Its really simple. Save up and pay for one full price. After dropping 500+ on the phone you will not drop it more then once.
Also, I just took the battery cover off and noticed that i'm missing one of the 2 screws that are supposed to be there. The one closest to the top, by the connectors on the door. Wondering if that may be causing and issue as well?
I doubt it dude. It might, but if the gold pronged are making contact, you should be good. I assume you have cleared your browser cache on the phone or at least done an actual reboot to clear temp files? I know sometimes I have force stop the problematic apps and clear their cache if my internet shows connected bit doesn't seem to work.

[Q] Signal issues with my S3

So my and my girlfriend switched both from Droid X's back in September, with that said we never had any issue with signal at our house(all ways had full bars 3G). Soon as i came home with my S3 i noticed that both of our phones had poor signal strength 3G 1 bar or 1x. I called verizon tech support they had no idea what was going on and were wanting to replace my phone, saying my phone was the issue. However my Girlfriends S3 was having the same problem now i don't think that both phones are defective and the tech rep was wanted to replace my phone with w refurbished one which i just bought this one brand spanking new. So i was wondering am i the only one with signal issues? And my other questions are .... Is it hardware or a software (radio) issue? Will there be a fix / Update?
It's just Samsung doesn't have good radios.
There's suppose you be an vrlhd update that suppose to help with signal and data

I don't think the HD radio did anything to improve my already piss poor reception either.
Synergy r73, Trinity Alpha 7 thanks to the monkey
Yeah none of the radio updates have made any significant difference for me. At my house, my old Motorola phones always had full (4 bars) of 3G, and my bionic actually could pick up a bar or two or 4G every now and then.
My GSIII gets a bar or two of 3G at best, and my reception fluctuates between -100 and -80. I would've never gotten this phone had I known the reception would be this weak.
Everything else about the phone is good, but none of it matters when you can't really use it like a phone and have to depend on wifi, which is somehow also weaker than any other device I've ever used.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
There's no two ways about it - Samsung radios suck @$s. I dumped a Galaxy Nexus earlier this year for this very issue and switched to a rockin' radio Moto razr maxx.
It may be hard to believe, but the s3 radio is actually better than the Nexus was. Fortunately for me I moved to an area with strong 4g almost everywhere, hence I can enjoy the rest of the s3. If I hadn't moved, however, there is no way I would have given up the moto.
It would be nice to see Samsung get their act together. Oh, and don't expect a software update to fix anything.....it won't.

If you are referring to the HD verison it's not making much difference for most. Or do you have information on something else?
I can barely if at all use my phone at my house or my neighbors across the alley..I have to be on WiFi..I have tried every radio including the leaked HD radio..all horrible..part of me really hoped Samsung would somehow fix this seeing as how they have acknowledged that it is an issue...is there any other way they are going to be able to fix it? Meaning is it just the radio and all they can do is keep trying? Or is there stuff they can fix more on the software side..maybe the RIL (radio layer interface) which as I understand is kind if the middle man software wise between the radio and the operating system..idk just sucks to have such an amazing and fast phone and to really be ready to get rid of it because it is that un usable..and don't get me going with touch wiz..I can't believe how sloe that makes this phone..aosp ROMs are easily 3 times as fast but then they have the data drop issues which are just starting to be fixed now by the RIL patch... ugh so much to think about..wish there was another phone out with a big developer community that was good unlike the galaxy nexus

Maybe the JB update will have better software side support? Or maybe you could take it to your Verizon store and see if it's an issue with your phone? Idk
Well I know its a known problem and I read somewhere that Samsung acknowledged the issue but either way I'm going to call for a replacement just to see if it makes a difference..just gotta think if what to say..cause I know if I just say I have signal issues they will say that smasung is working in an update to fix it..lots of people on all the forums have said that's what they were told when they called for signal issues

Signal Issues & Texting/Calls

One day my Nexus 5 just started to act weird when it came to signal. Signal would drop every few seconds to no bars and then would come back. I seem to be getting less signal everywhere. My phone seems to rarely connect to data now when the screen is off and even when on it takes a while and sometimes I even have to put it in airplane mode and then back out to get it to work! Texts never come in at the right time, they take up to 10 minutes longer. My texts will fail to send at times until I reboot or go in and out of airplane mode. Calls won't dial sometimes and I have to give it a few attempts even when I'm in a good signal area. What is the problem?
Are you on the stock firmware or have you flashed another rom? I would go back to stock and see if the problem is still there. If it is then you may have a hardware issue.

Are you absolutely sure that it has nothing to do with your carrier?

Quite sure since it has been going on for weeks and I've never had this happen with any other phone and even this phone up to a certain point.
