I bet I'm not the only person with this problem, but I have a brand new Sensation with a buzzing speaker. I've taken the cover off and looked for hairs in the grille and whatnot, to no avail. I even took off the protective sticker to see if that helped anything... nope.
The problem gets worse as the volume goes up.
I bought this from of someone on Craigslist who was selling a couple of them, new in box (he had bought them at Wal-Mart). Should I contact HTC?

Yes. It should be coveted under warranty irregardless of where you bought it from as the device itself is only a month old. They do not need proof of purchase
Swyped from my HTC Sensation Pyramid using my thumb and eyes
Thanks -- Talked to both HTC and T-Mobile.
HTC said they would repair it if I sent it in. T-Mobile said that I needed the phone to show up on my account (I only bought it last night) before they could determine warranty info, and that I'd be better of getting the receipt (which I don't have) and taking it back to the store it was purchased from.
However, I took the liberty of taking the back casing off, taking the speaker protective sticker off, and blowing some air into the speaker area. That seems to have fixed the problem and it looks like I won't have to send them the phone after all.
I also have a buzzing noise. A first device I had was producing such a strong buzzing that I asked for an exchange. The second one is only producing this noise on certain calls and gets worse when increasing the volume. I an also wiling to try to clean buy I fear to void warranty by removing the sticker.
The sticker comes off very easily with a razor blade and is very easily replaceable. Remember, you're only removing a grille speaker, not the "void" sticker. Nobody could possibly be any the wiser.

That is very bad news. I was hoping that was the solution.
Crap, I swapped a pretty good working sensation having dust for a sensation having no dust but with a massive buzzing noise when having a conversation. Right now, I hate htc.

So, I will return my third sensation because of the buzzing problem. My shop is going to hate me so bad. On the other hand, no really my fault, is it?
But I will certainly not take another sensation for now. I will check back in a few months if htc has fixed the issues. I have no use for a phone that cannot make phone calls properly!
Can't believe htc is making such sophisticated devices, but is unable to make the mere phone function work properly.
I noticed my earpiece makes a light crackling noise when in phone calls. It does get worse with increased volume. I am going to deal with it for now and see if for some reason it gets better. I REALLY dont want to have to try and return my phone because I just returned another one and I dont want to be one of those people that abuses the warranty system.
Getting a buzzing on my new Sensation earpiece when on the phone, gutted right now. Just contacted HTC.
Sending my phone back, after 5 days, i can't stand it any longer!
Also have this problem... I'm going to try and replace it tomorrow
I hope they won't give me a refurbished one... I just bought mine on Saturday...
I noticed the buzzing yesterday. I have only had the phone for 3 days. I imagined I would be the only one having this problem. I don't have any problems returning the phone. I haven't returned one before, but I don't think I should have to settle for a brand new phone that can't perform its most simple function.
have the same problem ....
I replaced the phone today, after A TON of arguing with the store clerk... They were trying to make me send the phone to HTC warranty service, but in the end they gave in.
The new one only exhibits this problem moderately at the loudest speaker setting. Below or at medium it is not noticeable.
Overall I'm pleased with the outcome
so if this is a common issue
if I send my phone to the repair center how are they gonna repair it ...
Also the spare parts must be broken...
Not all of them are like that...Odds are you'd get a "better" device
Just got my Sensation today and am having the same issue: distortion at all volume levels - it sounds almost like a blown earpiece. I will probably end up exchanging it soon as I cannot stand the noise during calls.
Hello all I have a problem. no matter who I call Im told my voice sounds muffled. This is a stock phone. nothing changed. I did a hard reset but still have problem. Any suggestion?
Take off your case
Sent from my One X using xda premium
I don' t have a cover.
Yeap, same thing here...
Arent other people facing this issue?
Even a lot of online reviews mentioned this. But i never thought the mic quality is going to be this troublesome.
I tried calling myself on an Atrix/Galaxy S/Galaxy note
I myself find the microphone quality quite cheap. It picks up the slightest of nicks and bumps but its definitely too muddy for the other persons comfort!!
The call volumes were very low on my G2 and Sensation in the past. They fixed that but messed up the microphone quality!
Seriously disappointing. Not buying a HTC device ever again!
btw. Not using a case or anything.

Hello everyone,
I came from a Z1, the mic started malfunctioning and I could only be when using handsfree on it.
So I ordered a Z3 from my carrier, got it shipped by mail. When I received it, the SIM/SD card flap wouldn't close properly, so I phoned customer service and got a replacement Z3 mailed to me. The next one I got (received it 3 days ago) looked fine, until today when I took it out of my front pocket. I heard a poping sound, I had earphones plugged into it. I could see the back glass starting to come off. I'd say whole top left 1/4 of the phone is not glued on anymore.
I really liked the Z1 and the Z3 as well as features and look go, but I am now getting unsure about getting this phone. Am I just unlucky and got two poorly built units, or are they mostly all bad?
JF
You're not the only one, no. My sister bought a Z3 and the left side of the back panel (looking at the back) is not properly attached either, and is flexed outwards. After a small amount of use its to the point now where it is sort of flapping about and she needs to use a case.
My girlfriends Z3 went into a small amount of fresh water to take one picture and moments later the screen went black and died completely. After a few minutes googling i found many other people having the same issues with the Z3's.
Just bad luck bud, get it exchanged while you can. Carriers can be real douche after 7 days or whatever depending your location.
Nothing wrong with my z3 even though its second hand. *fingers crossed*
Just got my 3rd Z3, this one the flaps look fine, the back glass seems glued correctly and it passes the pressure test... The downside is, the box was sealed when I got it, but it was missing the screen protectors. Oh well... just my luck. I'll peel off the ones from the previous one before I ship it back, until I order some new ones.

Xperia Z3 dosent come with screen protectors, so this is not a flaw.
Also you was just unlucky. I bought mine one month ago, i hadnt a single problem with it so far.

It may be.
The first two Z3's I got had screen protectors included in the box. The last one didn't...
Anyway, the last Z3 will go back as it is no longer working. Over the weekend, I was at a friend's batchelor party and we were doing indoor surfing. I was filming him from aside and the phone took a few water splashes, and the display started flickering and died within a few minutes. I am terribly dissapointed in this phone. I really enjoyed my Z1, with all it's glitches and freezing. The Z3's performance was great, it seems it's just the build quality. I had bough my wife a Z3 a few months ago, as she likes water sports and she liked how I could use my Z1 at the beach/lake, but now she is scared of even getting some rain on her's, and we can't return it for another one since we're over the buyer's remorse period.
It's a shame there are no other waterproof phones out there (besides Samsungs).

Buy SAMSUNG and do with that indoor surfing.
Now that's some really bad luck. I heard the Z3 is less than perfect when it comes to build quality but this is just insane. Mine works well and is waterproof but has a dead pixel (I think it's covered under warranty but I don't feel like going to the service center). I hope you get one that works. Other than that if you want something with less than flagship specs there are plenty of rugged phones to choose from. Buy one of those for watersports and buy a different flagship for daily use. I heard the Samsung S6 is supposed to be pretty good.

Chill, I was just giving OP my point of view. He seems to be very disappointed with Sony but he wants a waterproof phone, his best option is to buy a rugged phone for watery outdoors and a different flagship for daily dry use. I like my Z3 more than the S6, but if my Z3 were to suddenly explode and make me get buyer's remorse I would most likely buy the S6 which is the second best phone on the market after Z3 imo.

Ok, no problem.
I think I'll keep the Z1 around for watersports. It still runs fine, the only problem is the mic is busted on it. I was thinking of using it with a sports band to put on my forearm and use as a GPS while riding my motorcycle. I'll just get a regular, non-waterproof phone instead.
I've had a Galaxy S4 in the past. The hardware is great, but I don't like the UI and all the software they load it with. I might look into the M9, since it seems like the one of the last ones with SD card support. Anyone has comments on it?

Coming from Z5, XZ seems like a superior downgrade.
Double tap to wake is so annoying that i want to throw this phone against a wall.
Loud speakers are the worst compared to any smartphone. Seriously guys try this, when I was on a call I've put it on speakers and I was like there is no diff between turning on and off the speakers.
You here same amount of sound with or without turning the speakers on while on a call.
Only thing that is improved on this phone compared to z5 is snappy fingerprint sensor.
I am a Sony fan and maybe its time to rethink.
I've damaged my Z5 by takin it to swimming pool.
Now I even regret buying XZ?

So far I've owned a Z, M4 Aqua, Z3, briefly used a Z5 and I seriously have difficulty seeing how the XZ or XZs for that matter could be a downgrade in any aspect. The only thing I can't get over not having is the magnetic charger plug I had on the Z3, I would trade the fingerprint scanner for that in a heartbeat.
What do you mean there's no difference in using voicalls through earspeaker and loudspeaker? The speakers on this thing are way better in loudness, bass and clarity compared to both Z3 and Z5. Apart from the HTC One M8 I used briefly, XZ is the best I've heard so far. That BoomSound on HTC is insanely good, and when you take the phone apart it becomes clear why, those speakers are huge.
What's wrong with the double-tap?
Do you maybe have a defective unit on your hands???

It takes atleast 4-5 attempts to wake the device by double tap. I've searched and found that it happens often when device goes to sleep on its own.
They said its a software bug, but already running 7.1.1 and i'm still waiting for a fix.
And regarding speaker sound I dont know if you have used z5 but I've used it for 1 and a half year. I do feel like there is awfull low sound from speakers.
Being a pioneer in sound quality this is really bad from sony. Some might say its a trade for waterproof, but S7 edge is doin quite fine.
My XZ is just one month old btw. It has been imported in oct 2016. Been quite a long time on shelf, but hope that has nothin to do with anything.

Do you know the double-tap works only on center region of the screen? Once I learned that, it made a lot more sense and I have no issues with that any more. It's like that by design and on purpose, to prevent accidental double-tapping.
Uhm...have you compared the sound from the S7 Edge and the XZ? It's night and day, in favor of the XZ. Dude, there's either something wrong with your unit, or you are talking nonsense.
Actually, there are a couple of videos comparing this on youtube, iPhone 7 included, the XZ beats S7 by a mile in sound.
What do you mean on the shelve? Like in the store display or on the shelve at home in a box? If it was the second one, doesn't matter. If it was a display unit in the store...yes, it matters.
The XZ should be better thatn Z5 in every aspect, no question about it.
Yes, I used Z5 briefly, before it I used the Z3. I was very dissapointed by the overheating and battery life so I went back to Z3 and now XZ. Z5 is a beautiful phone, at first I was very happy to get it after Z3, but in practical terms it became a nightmare for me. Nothing to this day beats the battery life of my Z3. And that magnetic charger was a thing of beauty, unfortunate they ditched it.

I get that, it works differently on the XZ than Z3 and Z5, the double-tap doesn't work on the edges of the screen, try it. It's by design, and once you learn that, it's fine, just tap near the center region. It's like on laptop touchpads, the edges don't react to click gestures, only scroll and such, it's to prevent unwanted taps. Why is this a huge issue...
I was actually happy with this because the Z3 would unlock on its own in my pocket, i don't have that issue with the XZ.
So, have you compared the sound on S7 to XZ yet?

Sorry, I've not compared yet. I'm in my home town now (Village).
I'll compare once i go to my work place.
I agree, I'm really regretting going for the XZ after the Z3.
In my case performance and battery life are the main issues, although the speaker volume also annoys me, but it wasnt better on the Z3 so i cant complain.
I usually travel in hot countries, last week i was in Kuwait and it was 38-40 c ambient, so naturally, the XZ with its thin metal back got very hot very quickly and reached 46c doing basic stuff like phone calls and whatsapp. It got so slow I wanted to break it in half; it hangs, its slow, its not so smooth (all compared to the 3 year old Z3) and this all starts at around 38-39c.
Also battery life is very inconsistent; sometimes I get 4 hrs SoT, sometimes like yesterday (normal day without anything special) I get 2 hrs.
One more thing; out of no where something melted inside the charging port and the charger wont go in properly anymore, the phone is always in a case and nothing goes into the port.
If my Z3 hardware didn't give up I would've kept using it, unfortunately I'm stuck with the XZ until the next Pixel comes out. I'm also working on fixing the hardware parts of the Z3 that are damaged and going back to using it again with the XZ as a second phone for camera and media consumption.

Loudspeakers aren't the best. But not the worst. Some smartphones do worst than this. On call i agree only one defect on 1000 pros. But root solve that.
I have compared z5 from xz... And xz is far away better and stable. Z5 thanks to snapdragon 810 have a confused battery. Sometimes is Great, Sometimes is horrible. Camera is very worst, performances too. Fingerprint too. Only pro is speakers.

But as Atrax stated middle of the screen works fine for double tap. But it sure is annoying coming from z5. I just don't feel like it as a feature.
Yeah well, was very happy with the device until today.
Bottom speaker produces horrible crackling sound when playing any sound. It's just defect from now to then.
Thanks to Amazon i can now send it for repair and am already sure that there will be anything like scratches, bad gaps or whatever...
Not even speaking of IP rating.
Did anyone else have a defect speaker? Because after that short time and rarely using it this is rather strange.
Actually i'm pretty pissed about Sonys quality. Always thought it was good, but some days ago my wife's X compact got a defect on screen and now this. Used htc since the original Desire and never had anything. Seems switching manufacturer is a bad idea
ALL manufacturers have defects. Getting my XZ2C next week, but issues like this are standard for any manufacturer and shouldn't put you off any brand. Either get your phone repaired, or deal with the crackling.
My HTC M7 failed once. My HTC M9 failed twice. My HTC 10 has also failed twice and on the second repair they scratched the backlight on the Recents button. Their quality control is the same. Such is life. Getting worked up about it won't solve anything.

Yes I also have a defect bottom speaker. Severe crackling above about 75% volume in the mid-ranges frequency-wise. I've owned it maybe three or four weeks? I'm thinking I may have to return the phone. I think you're perfectly justified in being pissed - I'm a bit pissed too - this is a $600 phone and getting speaker crackling this early in is pretty ridiculous. Maybe it's just a particle of dust/debris that's made it into the speaker but nevertheless there seems to be an issue with this phone's design and/or manufacturing as I've seen a couple other posts about this problem on Sony's site.
My Axon 7 had this issue as well but the speaker grill could be pretty easily cleaned with a sim ejector and that always resolved it. But the XZ2c seems to have a bit more of a tight area around the speaker which might be nearly impossible to clean without removing the screen assembly.

You can watch the xz2c teardown video on yt where you can see the internals. You can also see why they have to disassemble half of the phone for repair. There is a channel leading from the "gap" outside to the speaker inside. Regarding it is ip68 no piece of dust should make its way inside the speaker itself.
Apart from that i know how a broken speaker sounds and this one is broken. So either it is just a piece of s*** or they are powering it wrong. Can't remember ever having used it at 100% and even if it should be able to deal with it.
I bought a LG G6 as temporary replacement because it is ridicously cheap (paid 315€) and will send in my XZ2c tomorrow.
And while it is bigger and SD821 is noticeable after 835/845 you know what? It is also a good device...
Haven't decided yet if i'll keep the Sony after repair. Well first it has to be repaired (without damage).
