Notification volume - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ringtones- fine
Notifications are really really weak tho, any way to boost them since there's no x-loud this time
Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk

I found a bug: setting the S-Force Front Surround option in the audio menu, phone does not ring when I receive whatsapp notifications.

I can't believe more people aren't mentioning this. I can barely hear notifications when the phone is in my pocket.
When you select the notification the volume is fine. Surely there's got to be some way of increasing it...

It really is ridiculously quiet.
Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk

I agree too - I'd like separate Notification/Ringtone volume adjustments. I never hear when I get e-mails of messages etc.

Can you better investigate this bug? It's an hw or sw problem?
Every people can confirm this? With all volumes at the highest level , notifications are like at the minimum in every app.
When you choose the sound....it is loud and clear..... then it become very very low...
Which fw have you?

It's the same on the Z2. Really can't see how Sony haven't sorted it yet (that's assuming they think it is a bug). Have tried different firmwares, the only thing that can sort it (on the Z2) is flashing a 3rd party fix which you really shouldn't have to do on a £500 phone!!

So, is there no way to boost up notification volume? I just live with it with vibrat functions, but i not like vibrating...

Guys... please go to Sony support forums and bash it out on them!

Not a single reply from them

I just found this issue. How the heck are we supposed to know when we get messages except constantly checking the phone...

Haha, I have gear live which works a treat, but seriously; the volume in general is very loud on full, but notification volume sucks

This worked for me but for right now am i having difficulties repeating the success.
1. Go to settings - sound - system notification sound: select no sound. Do the same with whatsapp settings.
2. Install lightflow. Go to lightflow notification settings, set an mp3 file other than the ones found preinstalled in your phone as individual notification sounds for whatsapp, whatsapp groups, gmail, messages etc.
3. Go to lightflow volume settings, activate individual lightflow notification sounds and adjust their volume to the max ( louder than phone ringing tones ).
I am using "nextel" sound that i downloaded from zedge ages ago. It now plays as loud as in my previoud phone LG G2. I am using it with whatsapp and am very happy.
I did try to replicate this procedure and cut a small piece of a moby song and set it as gmail notification sound. Not as loud as my whatsapp sound. The piece that i cut from the song wasn´t so loud to begin with. I´ll try again with a louder piece of song or a new zedge - tune when i have time.

Nice experiments but I do think we need to get Sony to recognise it as a proper issue. At least it is only software and should be easy to fix...right?

This problem comes from the Z2, if SONY wanted to fix it already would have.
I think we'll have to keep quiet Android L

The notification sound volume from Z2 is better than Z3. Now I rely on the vibration which I not like it.

I have the same problem with my Z3 Ringtones fine but all notifications are ridiculously low.
Can't even hear the "plop" when I send a message in WhatsApp and hear a incoming message notification.
Coming from the HTC Ones I'm very disappointing. On the One I had full control of all sounds, is it like so hard to make a drawer to control sounds the same way? Can't even root the phone to get a solution cause of the damn bootloader.

You just have to use normalized mp3s and there's no problem. Load your mp3s into Audacity or some other (free) sample editor, normalise them (it increases the volume uniformly, peaking at 100% usually), save them, copy them to your phone. Loud!

Still not normal that on a 600€ phone you need to do such things
I tried some notifications from Zedge but they are too loud now as you cannot change just notification volume without lowering ringtone..

[APP & GUIDE]: Volume+ - Increasing your music gain & quality through your headset
Hello guys and let us begin!
During my cohabitation with my beloved Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 , I had always one complain.
The bootloader was locked , battery life was awfull , there was no incall volume , camera gave too noisy pictures , the stock ROM was laggy , we didn't have fps uncaped...
...no seriously just one complain. I could never enjoy music being played on my headset using my mobile phone.
At this point many negative people may say that Android is not a music/multimedia platform and the hardware provided (headset etc.) is not of the best quality. Agreed! But I will answer we will have to work with what's being given.
So after using several custom ROMs equiped with DSP Manager I wasn't exactly getting the result I wanted. I had several undesired results such as:
The first few seconds of the song being played didn't actually play.
The bass was off the hook resulting in my headset playing a farty noise in my ears whenever there was a song that demanded deep bass.
I had generaly low volume resulting to not being able to listen to my favourite music while on my 3 hour bus travel every day to my university...
After some search around market and xda-developers forum I found the Volume+ application which is descent in it's free version BUT performs wonders as a paid version.
Now what I'm about to say onwards is about the paid version which in my humble opinion deserves its money.
AS THE DEVELOPER SAYS , I REPEAT TOO... THIS APP CAN GO -VERY- LOUD. I AM IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE IF BY YOUR OWN MISTAKE YOU DAMAGE PERMANENTLY THE SPEAKER OF YOUR DEVICE.
First of we begin by setting any other equalizer stock or non stock to OFF. And if there is no disable option then we select the "FLAT" preset (that goes for stock Music player that can't disable its equalizer).
1.Then run Volume+ and chose Headset Settings.
2. Tick Speaker Modifications under Settings to Enable it.
Do not enable Virtual Room Effect. It's all about distortion imho.
3. Do -NOT- touch Basic Settings at all.
Basic Settings give some pre-made presets and none of them is good enough for x10. They all lack something and francly I've never been satisfied.
4. Tick Speaker Modifications under Advanced Settings.
That's for enabling the advanced equalizer to allow us to set each frequency channel independently.
5. Apply the following values.
Now these are the settings I use and I'm so much satisfied with them. They give me a rich overall volume , with correct frequencies.
At this point I want to say that if any other user has settings that believes are better than mine, feel free to post , share and explain!
Code:
Low: 100
Low/Mid: 120
Mid: 105
Mid/High: 100
High: 95
Volume Level: 7
Bass Boost: 8
Echo/Delay Level: 4
6. Although this application claims not to need a restart of device I strongly DISAGREE!
Reboot your device after you are done and under no reason should you kill the Volume+ service in case you are using a task killer/manager. Just add it to exceptions/white list.
So once you are done your settings must look exactly like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
How/Why:
In case you liked the result you can go on reading.
Those settings were not copied or found around the internet although I'm pretty sure anyone can Google and find something similar.
Those settings came from me and took quite a lot of my time since the whole process of "perfecting" them was listening to a bunch of different favourite songs (each song has its strengths and weaknesses) tweaking , restarting and again from the beggining. That's the best way to work with this application and needs quite a lot of patience but produces a neat result.
That being said , I want to say that my thing about music is that I'm a mainstream freak. So the songs I used to make my configuration are limited to certain kinds such as House , Electro , RnB/Hip-Hop , Pop , some slow Ballads. So for hardcore (Psy) Trance , (Death/Black) Metal , Opera listeners out there ... well guys , don't expect miracles!
Sample of songs used:
(Youtube quality has no relevance I just wanted a way to present them to you. I have those songs in full quality in my SDcard ofcourse.)
1. Claydee & Dimension-X - Call Me
(Pop with great vocals and hints of electro sounds and steady beat)
2. Alexunder Base ft. Mirela - Feelings (Club Version)
(Nice deep vocals and smooth bass. Also deep steady beat)
3. Fly Project - Goodbye
(Pop - High pitched tones during the reffrain natural and distorted guitar notes included)
4. Ela Rose ft. David Deejay - Lovely Words
(Nice deep bass , deep vocals , ambient sounds at the beginning)
5. MIMS - Move (If You Wanna)
(RnB - Very deep strong bass , human speech , harsh mid sounds like percussion)
...and about 20 others!
Regards!
Reserved for future use and because I can!

Not likely unless you do something incredibly thoughtless which again I can't be sure because headset and speaker are far different in technology.

[HOW TO] Make your Play the perfect in-car MP3 player!

Okay, so this thread may seem a bit odd, but there are people (myself included) who use their Xperia Play to blare music through their car stereos while driving. I've found that the best way to do this and not veer off the road (hey thanks SE for the really difficult to unlock phone.. ) is to do the following:
1) get root here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
2) download PowerAMP from the marketplace (just because I like poweramp... you can do this with the stock music player as well... blah.)
3) Download the free app "Change Shoulder Buttons" from the market
4) Go to the change shoulder app, click mode, then media.
5) Accept root permissions, do the Charleston, and rejoice!
The best way to change songs while on the road is to hit the home button (which lights up the screen) then hit the R shoulder button. It will change the song without you even having to unlock it!
I know this tutorial seems fairly obvious, or dumb, or common sense, but maybe I just saved someone out there from running over a cat because their stupid lock screen swipey thing wouldn't swipe, and they really didn't want to listen to That One Song.
Or you can get PlayerPro (which you should have anyway because it's the absolute best mobile media playing experience of any mobile operating system) and have a media player integrated right there in your lock screen :3

Ah, this looks great, but I made this thread on the idea of "eyes on the road, not on your phone" and although the lockscreen would be awesome for while I'm walking or something, I like having the ability to change songs without looking at my phone. Then again, for the life of me I cannot use my touch screen without looking, and I'm sure that most people here can do that. xP
Thank you for the find though! I will give it a try when I get home.

If you use poweramp, that also has a lockscreen player

*scours settings* le woah! I originally didn't like this new Poweramp release, but it's starting to get better and better!
Just Shake app allows volume buttons to be used for previous/next track when the music player is playing or when the headphones are pluged in. Has many other features too like silencing the ring tone with the turn of the phone, answering/hanging up calls with a shake, or launchng apps with the shake when not phoning, and I believe does not require root. Also vibrates when the call ends. Give free trial a go, I purchased the app but do have a problem with it sometimes dying in the background - maybe converting it into system app if you have root fixes that - I will test.
I just use doubletwist for itunes syncing with my phone upside down in the car (since they put the lockscreen buttons on the bottom). Works well enough since I'm not dead or anything yet and it's free. It's just annoying that applications have a sucky/lack of support for creating dynamic playlists as compared to ipod touch/iphone.
CyanogenMod 7.1 uses the volume buttons to raise/lower volume and change songs with any music player.

increasing your Dalvik VM Heapsize may also help you with that problem
Depending on your car Bluetooth music is pretty nice. While the sound quality is a bit lower, I can connect to my phone without even taking it out of my pocket, and my steering wheel controls work to allow me to change tracks! Also on Pandora the controls move you to the next track. If I hit the source button on my steering wheel to go to the radio or something my phone pauses automatically as well. This is all built in I had no modifications made to the phone to do this.
My car is a 2010 Camaro SS, but I would imagine any GM car with BT music should do this. And any other brand for that matter.

I haven't gone Dalvik root yet, but was considering doing Link2SD to get more memory - what do you think about link2sd versus Dalvik cache please? By the way Just Shake has not failed since i made it a system app so far. I tried the same trick with "Skype on 3" but it still closes in background by itself - maybe this one does it when I lose internet or mobile connection in the tube etc.

Link2sd is better. To change the dalvik vm heapsize all you have to do is pull your build.prop open in wordpad, find the line that says dalvik vm heapsize =. And change the number to 48m. This will allow background apps a little more memory before system closes them

★ Plays Your Ringtone instead someones ringback tone!
★ Supports: Different Ringtones for each Contact and Group!
★ Supports: Bluetooth Headset (A2DP and older standards)!
★ Design: White Holo theme for all Android versions!
★ Notification bar icon!
★ Music stop button on call screen!
Android OS limitations:
Beeps and Ringback tone are not completely silenced. This limitation is because of Android OS Architecture. Android does not allow to silence call sound stream. So, maybe, you'll hear it on the background or maybe not. It depends on ringtone that you'll select.
Anyway, at the moment, there is no way to automatically stop playing music when: "subscriber is busy", "not available", etc. Most likely you'll recognize such message by specific tone of narrator.
Try a Free version!
There are some limitations in free version, but you will see main principles anyway!

okty2k, it's first time, that someone reports on such strange bug
The Volume is set for Music Stream and music playback is going via this Music Stream
If Volume isn't changing - music going via another Stream, for unknown reason.
I guess it's something with software on your device
Try to reboot it, sometimes it solves strange cases
well, I guess that's the case. Because the music volume I turn to zero and still the volume is to high. Actually, there is no change when moving the volume in the application.
edit: I will try also on Xperia Arc S and come back with the behavior description. For now, like I said, due to an unknown problem, on Huawei P1 is not working. The volume seems not to change no matter what.
edit 2: work flawlessly on Xperia Arc S. any way yo identify the problem on P1? On P1 everything else works perfectly, I did not have any problems at all.

okty2k, tnx for your reply
I'm glad that app works good on Xperia Arc S
About Huawei P1: I don't have this device, so I can't test on it, but I think, that problem is in software - either in ROM or in some other audio-related program, as, for some reason, Music Stream constant is not working for you
But, not to start finding which piece of software makes it so, I have idea of workaround for you: try to set music volume while you using standard audio player.
Not sure, but it might work

yes, i remember i used viper4android or something similar.
A workaround could be to edit notification sound and decrease volume by 5db , saving to a new sound

You could manually edit build prop, but I couldn't direct you to what line exactly.
Thanks for all the advise! I was hoping it was a OP6 problem because all my sounds are very loud.
I have the same problem with the notification sounds. After the 5.1.6 update they don't seem to be affected by any of the volume controls.
My op6 is not loud. How make you louder?
for me 5.1.7 did not fix it...
All of the sounds are very loud because on 5.1.5 everyone was complaining that the sounds were too low. So OnePlus pushed up the volume. You can go on to the OnePlus Community forums if you want to read all the complaints about how low the sound was
The problem was people complaining it was too low. For me personally, the audio was just fine. never missed a call or any notification at all, anyway...everybody had to complain. So now ONEPLUS boosted up the levels to a point you can hear your phone ringing across the building in minimum level.
Funny thing is: I have to use an app to decrease screen brightness to lower levels than minimum at night, and i have to use another app/kernel to decrease the sound to minimum levels too. lol. I love this phone with all my heart, but i hate having to hack 2 basic settings

I just tried the app and I can't leave notification at 100% and lower the phone ringer volume, they move together when I change one of them. App is a no go unless I'm missing something
Apparently you did not search the settings for the ring and notifications separation toggle

How do I turn off audible notifications for email and messages?

I've been playing with the phone since yesterday, but I keep on getting all these loud notifications and can't figure how to stop them. The phone is in the OEM LED wallet case.
For email, I just go into my email app (I use Gmail) and under alert tone I just select none. As for text notifications, not sure, without turning off system notifications all together. Maybe select a different, less irritating alert tone in the system settings?
Thanks,
I found Manage Notifications for each email account and selected Silent for the Gmail account. Gonna check on messages now.
I have my work email set to vibrate only. So I set the notification suond to silent. It's an option when you're choosing the notification sound. That's the easiest way.
That way you still keep the notification etc, but it stays silent.
This phone is driving me crazy. I'm coming from the Note 9 which only gave audible notifications when the phone rang. Now I'm getting sounds for all different apps. It is distracting and annoying. Samsung should have put in one setting to turn off all audible notifications except for phone calls. The interruptions out of this phone make it unsuitable as a business device.

Why not just turn the notification volume down if you don't want to hear them? That's what a volume slider is for isn't it?
I think also if you set the default notification to "none" that will take care of 95% of apps. Only ones that wl still have a sound are ones that provide their own notification sound, like eBay or Facebook.
I've just figured out how to do this today and it's actually really simple lol, seemed to get rid of all audio for notifications. Go into Settings > Ringtone > Sound and Vibration and then to notification sound, choose the sim and scroll to the top for Silent.

I'm having trouble too. I want to enable silent notifications and choose which apps are audible. I haven't been able to find a way to do this.

Just change the notification sound for each app. The ones you want to be silent, just set the notification tone for those apps to silent. Some apps have the settings in the app. But you can find all notifications in Settings > Notifications > tap "See all" > then change the drop down menu from "Most recent" to "All".
Then in the list you can find the apps you want to change the notification sounds for.
Folks, Thanks everyone for your help. Following your advice I was able to mute everything except for the phone call ring. I went to the following:
Settings
Sounds and Vibration
Volume
Notifications
Then I just reduced the volume there and all is well.
These tips are all fine and dandy, but i'm getting notification alerts when my phone simply rotates from portrait to landscape, answering and completing phone calls, opening and closing ANY app, etc etc. I'm also coming from a Note 9, and none of this garbage occured on that one. Only difference between my 9 and 20 ultra (aside from the model), is that my 9 is a factory purchase and my 20 from Verizon.
As an afterthought, since I use a bluetooth device, is there a way to have an audible alert on both the phone AND BT device? I can apparently only choose one or the other with this new UI. If I choose the phone, no notification sounds come through the BT headset, and if I choose the BT, no audible notifications come through the phone (oddly, 'some' notifications come through my watch, but not always?).
Again, none of these issues were present in my Note 9. I wonder if there's a way to transfer system notification settings from my 9 to 20....
