Okay, so this thread may seem a bit odd, but there are people (myself included) who use their Xperia Play to blare music through their car stereos while driving. I've found that the best way to do this and not veer off the road (hey thanks SE for the really difficult to unlock phone.. ) is to do the following:
1) get root here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
2) download PowerAMP from the marketplace (just because I like poweramp... you can do this with the stock music player as well... blah.)
3) Download the free app "Change Shoulder Buttons" from the market
4) Go to the change shoulder app, click mode, then media.
5) Accept root permissions, do the Charleston, and rejoice!
The best way to change songs while on the road is to hit the home button (which lights up the screen) then hit the R shoulder button. It will change the song without you even having to unlock it!
I know this tutorial seems fairly obvious, or dumb, or common sense, but maybe I just saved someone out there from running over a cat because their stupid lock screen swipey thing wouldn't swipe, and they really didn't want to listen to That One Song.
Or you can get PlayerPro (which you should have anyway because it's the absolute best mobile media playing experience of any mobile operating system) and have a media player integrated right there in your lock screen :3

Ah, this looks great, but I made this thread on the idea of "eyes on the road, not on your phone" and although the lockscreen would be awesome for while I'm walking or something, I like having the ability to change songs without looking at my phone. Then again, for the life of me I cannot use my touch screen without looking, and I'm sure that most people here can do that. xP
Thank you for the find though! I will give it a try when I get home.

If you use poweramp, that also has a lockscreen player

*scours settings* le woah! I originally didn't like this new Poweramp release, but it's starting to get better and better!
Just Shake app allows volume buttons to be used for previous/next track when the music player is playing or when the headphones are pluged in. Has many other features too like silencing the ring tone with the turn of the phone, answering/hanging up calls with a shake, or launchng apps with the shake when not phoning, and I believe does not require root. Also vibrates when the call ends. Give free trial a go, I purchased the app but do have a problem with it sometimes dying in the background - maybe converting it into system app if you have root fixes that - I will test.
I just use doubletwist for itunes syncing with my phone upside down in the car (since they put the lockscreen buttons on the bottom). Works well enough since I'm not dead or anything yet and it's free. It's just annoying that applications have a sucky/lack of support for creating dynamic playlists as compared to ipod touch/iphone.
CyanogenMod 7.1 uses the volume buttons to raise/lower volume and change songs with any music player.

increasing your Dalvik VM Heapsize may also help you with that problem
Depending on your car Bluetooth music is pretty nice. While the sound quality is a bit lower, I can connect to my phone without even taking it out of my pocket, and my steering wheel controls work to allow me to change tracks! Also on Pandora the controls move you to the next track. If I hit the source button on my steering wheel to go to the radio or something my phone pauses automatically as well. This is all built in I had no modifications made to the phone to do this.
My car is a 2010 Camaro SS, but I would imagine any GM car with BT music should do this. And any other brand for that matter.

I haven't gone Dalvik root yet, but was considering doing Link2SD to get more memory - what do you think about link2sd versus Dalvik cache please? By the way Just Shake has not failed since i made it a system app so far. I tried the same trick with "Skype on 3" but it still closes in background by itself - maybe this one does it when I lose internet or mobile connection in the tube etc.

Link2sd is better. To change the dalvik vm heapsize all you have to do is pull your build.prop open in wordpad, find the line that says dalvik vm heapsize =. And change the number to 48m. This will allow background apps a little more memory before system closes them

Hey guys
i've got an Omnia and I have had many Windows phones before but i've never found the perfect music player. Wondering if anyone that knows of one that will fit all the requirements below:
MUST continue to play when screen is off/device is off (like WMP does)
Must not interfere with the normal pin unlock/screen saver process
Will read and have quick access to all my music (around 14gig) of WMA/MP3's and an easy way to access it.
I don't want to install S2U2. I like the fact that to use the phone all i do is turn on and use my screen unlock code - I'm guessing S2U2 will add another layer to this.
S2P has an awefull system for dealing with larger libraries, unless im being an idiot. There appears to be no way to jump around easily and scrolling through 14gig of music takes a looooooong time.
Believe it or not, i've found WMP the best so far in that I can fire it up, select my playlist and then turn the device off and it will continue to play in the background - perfect! Sadly though, its a bit old and crap.
Can anyone suggest a player that will do this?
Many thanks in advance!!!
Nitrogen. Not sure if it fulfils last requirement. If you haven't tried it, give it a search on the forum.
most players got the option of as they call it "toggle screen" or "blank screen"
which is what you request when you say "MUST continue to play when screen is off/device is off (like WMP does)"
Sadly Nitrogen doesn't appear to support WMA
Cheers anyway!

Not really no. I want the windows pin/lock screen to take over and leave the device power saving to the operating system. If I lose the phone whilst it has one of these apps running, anyone can unlock it. WMP will let the OS turn off the screen thus invoking the Windows password screen when I turn it back on. The apps i've tried (a while ago, i admit!) didn't. If the OS turned the screen and device off, the app stopped as well..... doh!
That is, unless these apps do do this now?
I like Conduits Pocket Player: http://www.conduits.com/products/player/
Have you tried Mort Player?
I love it i use it mainly to stream shoutcast internet radio that i have saved my fav stations playlists to the phone.
It works great in the backround as long as you set the screen to turn off on battery to a timeout shorter then the device default .. I normally have it on 10 seconds.
You can also choose to lock all the buttons so it does not wake the device up or pocket dial. It works well with incoming calls and pauses the music when phone call comes in and resumes afterwards.
You can set favorites such as folders or playlists.
You can set it to resume last track position upon opening and it will resume where it left off and start playing when the app is open.
There are a ton of cool skins for the player with multiple screens for Navigation small bar that is always on top. Car screen. Default screen and a playlist screen.
If you set the play mode to changer mode it will treat each folder like a cd meaning u can leave shuffle on for your tracks and then when u want another cd just skip to the next album (seperate track and folder Next and previous buttons)
It even has an alarm clock so you can set your favorite songs to play as alarms.

If you want something that you can navigate through a large library quickly give KInoma Play a go. I also have an Omnia with 26gb dedicated to music and its as slick as an Ipod. Mort and Pocket Player are good music players but suck when it comes up a slick interface.

This *seems* to do everything i want. Not tested its playing yet but it has at least recognised my WMP playlists and my WMA/MP3's - always a good start! Has its own screen off which i'm not happy about but can live with. Has a 30day license and if it works good, i'll cough up the cash. Thanks for the recommendation!
As for Mortplayer..... won't even uninstall if I want to remove settings, it locks up! Had to reboot twice and would only uninstall if it left its settings - crap imo, very, very crap.
aargh.... still looking!
Conduites player doesn't seem to be able to lock the screen and disable the buttons - although i could be missing something?
Also, rather oddly, it seems to take forever to open one of my playlists which is annoying and seems to pause about every 30 seconds for about a second. Any ideas?

Ever wondered Music runs without touch of ur finger??
Now it will!!
Intuitive music player, with sensors (proximity, accelerometer..) as controls.
This app allow you (mainly) to skip songs without using your fingers nor the screen, depending on the situation.
5 easy-to-access modes are available :
- Fly over : Pass your hand in front of your device (5cm max) to play/skip current song. Hold it 0.5s to pause. The proximity sensor we use is generally located around the device front speaker.
- Pocket : Lock the device, put in your pocket, slap it (pretty hard) to skip current track.
- Hammer : Put the device on a surface like a table, hit the table to skip current song. WARNING: using the device loudspeaker can produce enough vibration to fire the action !
- Sensors disabled : Sensors are disabled, you can only use buttons to control the player.
- Custom : In case you feel the need to use different sensor settings. Set wich sensors you want to enable, set sensitivty and your own action for each sensor events !
Please join the facebook page to ask questions, report bugs and request features ! (you can also use button in app context menu)

Great idea! Perfect for when I'm in the car. Is there a way to get rid of the menu to choose what mode it's in? Kinda intrusive.. Also, if there was a way to go back a song that would be awesome, however I see how that could not work.
The UI is ugly...but it great app... 5 stars...

works well ,however the ui looks ugly and needs to be changed ...
Some comments:
1. Feature request, swipe left to go back one song.
2. UI issue same as the rest. Can't select individual songs to play. Must create playlist?
3. Is there a way to calibrate the sensors? When I use the swipe function, when screen off, a slight movement of my phone will register as a swipe and skip to next song. Very irritating.
4. The app MUST hold a wakelock in order to work?
5. Table function works fine but hammer function a bit off and non responsive.
Great app. Keep developing.

Thanx mate
I usually have a problem with pausing with wave over option. While song changing works flawlessly, when I just put my hand over phone it often change a song before pausing, or even few songs. Sometimes song is paused, but after I take my hand away next one is started immediately. I think that this function need some calibration. Besides this flaw your music player is great - I'm surprised that no one before you though about that kind of way to change songs.

This is an app created to control your music over any app, so you can play fullscreen games and switch between songs... Yes! You can play Angry Birds and also skip that song you hate, or stop the music to hear the game sound effects .

Configuration:
Opacity: Sets the main window opacity.
Position: Sets the main window position between the four corners. Sometimes, when orientation changes, the position is reset to the top-left corner.
Service mode:
Silent: You won't be notified about the service execution, but the service could be killed when free memory is requested by system.
Persistent (notification): A notification will be shown, but your app will be hard to die.
Show/Hide:
Timeout: It will try to detect when music is being played, checking if the sound is kept more than 5 seconds.
Shaking device: Shake your device to show/hide the controls.
Features:
Pause, next and previous buttons.
Those can be hidden only by tapping the main icon.
Can be shown or hidden shaking the device.
Configurable opacity.
It can be easilly closed once we finished using it.
It works with almost any music player.
Requeriments:
The music player we where going to use must allow and be configured to use the "Headset Control". If app doesn't works, please, check your player configuration.
First run:
When you start the app the first time, you will not see any music control or notification. This is because default settings are Silent service and Timeout window display, so you will have to start playing music with any music player and the window will be shown.

Well, to perform the actions, you have to double tap the button, but i'll explain:
As a "security" feature, to not launch an action accidentally, you have to press the button "twice". The first tap will "select" the button. Once the button is "selected", the next time you press the button (only once, not twice), will perform the desire action (stop music, open config dialog, etc).
Do you understand what i mean?
At first I was thinking I wouldn't have a need for an application like this since I can quickly change tracks from the notification bar, but then I realised using this would be MUCH easier when using some form of navigation app as you don't need to swipe down the notification bar which stops you being able to see the directions being given.
This would be awesome if it worked with Pandora and other streaming music services like that!

I often listen to music on my Nexus 7 using Spotify.
At the same time I enjoy playing certain games, which inevitably have sound on them.
A lot of the time the sound on the game overpowers my music, and so when I go to turn the volume down, it turns down everything, including my music, so the game still overpowers the music.
When turning down the volume, and pressing the settings button that appears next to the volume bar (that displays the volume of media, notifications, ringer, etc.) it would be useful if the apps currently displaying sound would appear so you can change the volume of individual apps. So I could turn down the volume of my game however leave Spotify at full volume.
(Pretty sure this isn't possible right now?)
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
So what you're saying is you want to change volumes of individual apps, through the Android system.
Bro, my Windows computer can do that, and I don't think my Mac can (correct me if I'm wrong). It can probably be done, but I don't think it would be easy to manage an interface for the volume of every app. When you go into settings-sound-volumes, it currently gives you all the adjustable sounds. Now imagine having a slider for EVERY app. It could amount to hundreds of different sliders!
Anyhow, it's up to the app developers to add a setting for volume of the game. Most do, just look around for it
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium
Basically, I'll explain with screenshots.
So when you change the volume, you click the settings button to the right of it.

Then the screen comes up with all the volume sliders.
In addition to what is already there, the apps CURRENTLY playing sound on the device (for example, temple run and spotify) would also appear and you could drag their individual sliders.
Make sense? Very much like the windows volume mixer

This would take the app developers changing how the volume is controled as well as Android adding the ability in. I really dont see this happening as most developers want everything built into the app so it is compatible with more android versions.

The app developer shouldn't need to do anything, the system should be able to control the volume of each app, as this would be a new Android feature, and doesn't need anything in the apps themselves updated.
Like the Windows Volume Mixer, apps don't need to change anything to work with it, Windows controls them itself.

This is not windows. Linux is a whole another story. The way the OS is made The app developers will need to hook into an options for the system to control the volume. It is a security feature built into linux to prevent apps or the system from interfering.
Aww dang there go my hopes haha

He is not looking for that. He is looking to control them independently from the system sounds menu. This is not an option in android at the moment.

Hearing news of android notebooks coming out. This would definitely help make android a more fully functional operating system!

Sorry for bringing back to life this old topic but I was wondering if there is no new hack allowing this per apps volume control.

So, @Chainfire was kind enough to drop root on us today.
That means all bets are off. I got a Nexus Player early because I am a big HTPC enthusiast, as well as an avid Android Tweaker. I live to rip apart my OS and tailor it like a weird suit only I could love.
So, just flashed CF's rootboot, and it worked wonderfully. Given that I can now not only decompile and recompile lollipop APK's at will and modify system files...well...we can do anything.
For starters, I definitely want to make Google Play Movies uninstallable. I have Plex and a ton of content, and I don't want to have google movie suggestions cluttering up my screen. So let's make a script that can dump it to /data. Hell, toss music over there too.
How about re-ordering the home screen so the apps we want take first slots...not google's stuff.
I'm sure we can also have some more fun. If the bootloader is insecure, we can unpack the boot image, add init.d support and maybe tune some of Google's stock settings...see if we can get it to render HD content a little snappier.
So yeah. Hello everybody with a Nexus Player. I'm Digitalhigh. I've tried to do awesome things for people who have had the Evo 3D, M7, M8, and a few other random devices, and now I'm going to take a crack at the Nexus Player.
Let me know if you have any other ideas you'd like to see materialized.
Sounds good!
I think my number one pet peeve is not being able to re-arrange the apps how I see fit (even the "bump to the front the apps you use most" feature as google supposedly designed isn't working). I'd actually love to have a "pinned" row above all others with my favorite shortcuts, in the order I want them.
A close second fix would be the ability to surface non-TV optimized apps directly on the main interface, on a per app basis.
I love that the NP is now open for business.
Anyway we can get it setup so we can select the output resolution and possibly adjust for overscan. Also see if we can get some surround sound support. Seems that only google play movies outputs dolby digital.

Same here! I just did my first bit of system magic, completely obliterating play movies and tv, just to make sure the system wasn't dependent on it somehow. It's not, and I'm happy.
I will do a pull of /data, go through the XML and db's and see what settings are available to us. It'd either be in /data, or maybe a default settings bit somewhere in the UI apk that sets the default layout.
For adding non-TV apps to home menu...I forget the name, but there is an android APK out there that will let you link to specific activities in an app and make a shortcut for it on the home of launcher...I wonder if it would work with this.

Again, I'll look at what settings are available. I'll also pull down the factory image for it and see what we have available there. Just because we don't have an installer for it, doesn't mean we can't flash custom software and stuff through bootloader...kinda similar to my Rockchip RK808 android on a stick.
Oh, and I know it's a pain...but get the plexpass for a month or two. The plex for plex pass app works BEAUTIFULLY with this. I know it sucks having to pay, but versus sideloading the regular apk...it's so gorgeous...and it integrates into the home screen and searches. Only beef with it is that it's a bit laggy over AC for 1080...can't wait for my OTG cable and USB hub w. integrated NIC.
Edit: Oh, and it was sending 5.1 audio to the stereo.

So excited! I wish I knew more so I could help. I'm still just figuring how to setup the android sdk lol. But anyways, I guess what I'd like to see are my own apps in the home screen and all of the content at the top that Google shoves in our faces removed. If there's anything I can do to help get all of this awesomeness going just hit me up! ?
I sideloaded the plex apk from my logitech revue. It has the android tv interface. I dont know how up to date it is compared to thr plex pass version. But it works. But its only outputting 2.0 audio. According to the plex forum its because it uses the internal android player. That doesnt support surrounf sound.

I suspect this interface is customized. Give it a try.

You can turn off notifications for Google Play Movies (or any other app) and it wont show suggestions.
Looking forward to whatever else you may be able to come up with regards to customization.
I had to RMA my original unit, so I am waiting to get the new one before I root.
I'm just glad you're here. I was beginning to get nervous... it seems almost nobody has been talking about the Nexus Player. I have no development experience, but would be happy to test/help in any way needed. Keep that in mind.
Also willing to test and collaborate

Count me in as well! Can't wait to see some development for this little hockey puck.
please open up Bluetooth audio support. that would be awesome.
Calendar
I would love to get google calendar working, (can sideload but won't open) Would love to be able to sync my calendar to this device for morning viewing.
Third party apps will install (business calendar) but you cannot sync for some reason.

This is probably best as a separate topic in the Q&A section, but have you checked in settings under your user name? there is a sync section. is calendar listed there at all? I can't check at the moment, but something you can try.
