[Q] Moto G or Moto G 2nd? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to buy Moto G but don't know which version?
Motorola G or Motorola G 2nd.
I like the minimal design from the 1st.
The 2nd has larger screen and SD card, better camera and Android L upgrade.
But when asked Motorola Support if Moto G 2nd would have smaller battery life because of big screen, stereo speakers, SD card and Dual SIM, the answer was yes!
So I'm stuck. Also saw a lot of problems at Motorola support forum.
But of course, these people could be the minority.
What do you think?

The OG Moto G LTE is by far the best one. The Moto G 2 is a downgrade.

But it's only available in 8 GB storage so that's a big drawback.

The original Moto G is still worth it, especially the 16GB model.
Now if you really need an SD slot, get the LTE version, even tho there is no 16GB version of it.

Nobody likes the 2nd?! I didn't expect that.
It is so tempting the Android L guaranteed upgrade.

The 2nd gen is the same phone, but substantially bigger, which breaks the charm that the original had. I've seen only one by now and it really feels like a cheaper device. It's not bad though, just.......not what you've expected.

Get the 2nd G if screen size and SD card slot matters to you. Its basically the same device sans screen and SD card slot. Although if u rly want to save money, get the 1st gen 16gb model. Dont buy the 8gb.

Good feedbacks and good thread. I feel smart phones are not worth more than a year. Its a mad race and you are left alone sooner than you think.

I like both phones. But...
I see that the 1st has more problems than the 2nd. At least from what I see at Motorola forums.
I like the design and size of the first (although for me the ideal size is 4.7 - 4.8').
The battery lasts longer and has Gorilla Glass. The forums moderator says that the 2nd also has Gorilla Glass, but they never updated the specs page.
But the 2nd will get Android L and this is very tempting. I asked the Support if the 1st model would get an upgrade and they "don't know".
Right now in my country, the 1st is available and the 2nd is available only as Dual SIM 8GB.
In 2 days 15.000 black version pieces were gone and only the white model of the 2nd is available for now.
Don't know what to do. I am without a phone these days because I bricked the old one trying to install Cyanogenmod.
So somebody could say that if the 1st doesn't get another update, you can root the phone and install CM or something else.
But I'm not an expert. This time I will not tuch the phone or make experiments.

I am pretty happy with my 2013 Moto, 5 inch phones are way too big for my one hand using habit.
For the android L, I believe the 2013 should also get the update, thought the way they put lasted devices getting L 1st is really tempting..

Moto G or Moto G 4g?

Hi all. So i decided to buy moto g, expect me here in a couple of weeks . Anyway, i'm not sure should i buy classic moto g 16gb or this new moto g 4g with sdcard. Looking at it, having sdcard slot would be nice though i don't care much about 4g. What bothers me that amount of roms for 4g version seems to be much smaller and there are no kernels. Price of both versions seems to be similar on mobicity.co.uk. Also, does anyone know what would be the cheapest place to order moto g inside eu?
Bump :/
Don't know about the price, but I'm quite happy with the 4g variant.
Downloading official kitkat for it right now, 4g speed is nice to have, and moving apps to sdcard keeps this thing open for tons of apps + additional room for more. So I see no real advantage to the internal only one here.
Probably better to base it on your storage needs + some additional for growing room / additional app space. If you don't put/keep whole video files, tons of music, recovery backups, big games, or other things that take up lots of space on your phone then internal only should be fine. There's nothing wrong with it.
Why not wait a few days and see what the New Moto G (2?) Version specs are. That's what I'm doing.
Thanks for the help, i think i'm gonna buy 4g.
Basing your choice on a number of ROMs/kernels is quite bad idea. Poorly the worst thing you can do when choosing a proper mobile.
Anyway, consider if 12GB will be enough for your needs if you pick the classic 16GB moto g.For example I'm using an 8GB version for my daily driver and I don't feel that I need more free space, but sometimes I really feel like that it would have been great to have a sd, even tho that rarely comes to my mind.
After a while I got the LTE model and used it for about a month as daily one. Inserted a fancy 64GB class 10 microsd in it made by ADATA and it worked w/o a problem, even tho moto says up to 32GB... nice surprise there.
After few weeks I've realized that the damn sd card is pretty useless to me, even tho the device had only 8GB internal storage, but I just didn't need more...
Also you should consider that the inbuilt eMMC it's quite faster storage, than any micro sd you may use.
Good Luck.

If you use the phone as a music /video player and you like to use it as a camera, then the 4G with microsd slot is the best choice for you. If you use it primarily as a phone and you don't make a lot of photos and videos, then the 16 gb would be good. But remember that: one day you should need more space than the internal 12 gb (memory is 16 gb, but the actual free space is less) and the only solution would be the USB OTG.

[Q] Is the OPO still good?

With the OnePlus Two rumored to be around the corner is the One still a good phone to buy? Or should I wait, I'm worried about the One running out of stock when the Two is released, and with the two being an invite only buy I may not even be able to pick one up and it's not often that I have money readily available to spend, so should I go for it now? Having the latest thing isn't much of a bother to me (Still on 2013 Moto G) Any answers would be great.

I upgraded from the 2013 moto g to the oneplus one, performance difference is huge, the screen is huge, the camera is 100% better and it is definitely worth £235 for about a week but then you question did i really need the one plus one , it really does look the same with the Moto g as they are both stock so if you really dislike something about the moto g then i would get the oneplus one as its great but personally with all the bugs you can possibly get i would wait for the two as they most probably ironed it out so they don't have the same issues. The one plus one is a real gamble, some peoples touchscreen mess up and some others have a non booting phone, i really am scared that my phone is going to just switch off and with there embarrassingly bad customer service i would be -£250 and im 16 so its a lot of money ;D

[Q] recommended dual sim phone with active rom community?

Hey, recently it became apparent to me that I need a dual sim phone. I am coming from a sgs2 which on one side was crap because samsung stopped upgrading the OS long time ago but on the otherhand was great because the rom community around it is still pretty strong so I have been able to continue keeping it current.
So suggestions for strong dual sim phones (not toooo worried about price but cheap is of course good) that have active rom dev communities would really appreciated!!!

Moto X Style vs LG G4

Hi, maybe its to early to compare but since the price for both devices are almost the same in Europe i really cant decide which one is the better choice. Let me tell you something, i really like the pure android experience on Moto but i think that LG isn`t bad either. I hear there are some problems with data connection and touch on LG, and i am not sure if they solve the issue. Then again, the specs are pretty much the same on both, or am i missing something?
So what do you think, from your point of view?
The LG G4 is available today brand new unlocked on eBay for $452, shipped. The reason i went with the X Pure is because LG's UI is ugly and a resource hog IMO. Motorola's additions to Android are minimal yet extremely useful, which i prefer. I also feel that since the Pure is being sold unlocked directly through motorola, there will be better development for it here on XDA.

The G4 has 0 development (at least Verizon and other locked bootloader devices). I love my G4 but she's going back in the box when my 64gb Moto X Style arrives.

I have the G4. So development is dead, if you have a carrier one you have touchscreen issues (miss touches and lag), there is a fix but you have to wait for the update. Locked bootloader... I love the phone but it is annoying to use at the moment. Bring on the moto x
I have the TMobile G4 and a recent update fixed the touchscreen issues. I never had data issues though.
I am planning on switching to the Moto X Pure Edition. While I don't mind the LG UI and the phone has some nice useful customizations, I still prefer the stock Android experience. Throw Moto's features on top of that and the experience is that much better! I am also looking forward to the carrier-free experience!
G4'ed it!
Thanks for the feedback guys, i think i ll get the Moto x Style

Good choice Don't get me wrong the screen and the camera on the G4 is awesome but stock is the way to go!
I'm coming from the Verizon G4. While I love the looks, the feel, the camera, etc, I'm just not getting a good feeling that it will ever see a bootloader unlock. My MXP is supposed to arrive in a week, and I'm really looking forward to it.
I'm on the G3 right now and looking at the G4 as my finacee needs a phone and can take my G3. I was hoping to get the Moto X Pure, but I can't bring myself to go backwards on camera quality. Can't count on the new Nexus phones being great in that department either.

Exactly, there's much more to it. All cameras now are measured against the LG G4, new Galaxy range and iPhone 6. From everything I've seen the Moto X Play & Style are not on the same level as these phones.
I admit I got the G4 due to all the camera hype ... and it certainly lives up to that hype! Manual mode is cool, but honestly WAY over my head. However, I have come to realize I don't take very many pictures - I find myself wanting to take more pictures due the G4's camera though LOL. Personally, I'd rather the Moto features and stock Android over the G4 camera as said Moto features will get far more use than the camera. Yes, I may have situations where I am let down or aggravated by the camera on the X, but as I mentioned, taking pictures for me isn't a normal occurrence so it's worth the trade-off IMHO.
Edit: And I've had the first and second gen Xs and seen what improvements Motorola can make via software updates. While it may never get to G4 quality, I am confident they will address what ever shortcomings the camera has (assuming it's limited to software and not hardware)
I'm going to buy the MXP when I have to cash on hand. My last Android phone was a Droid Razr(ancient). I've since been to and iPhone 5s, and don't really like the OS. I've also been using a 2012 nexus 7 and still use it every day. The pure Android experience on the Nexus devices trump all. Add in the Moto Features and you can't go wrong. The Camera in the G4 is better, but if you're buying a ~&400 device for a camera only, you should buy an actual camera. The G4 also had an IR blaster, which I don't believe the Moto X Pure has. It would be nice to have that, but it really doesn't sway a decision for me. I also like the 0.2 inch boost on the screen size for the MXP, but that's an entirely opinion based decision. Dev support will certainly be better for Moto as well. I would also like to point out that the Moto X is actually cheaper, and straight from Moto, so customer support will be better than getting it from a rand third party on Ebay.
Looking at various reviews/pics of the X play, getting at the battery isn't all that complicated. It's not a plug'n'play replacement, but appears to be a rather simple disassembly process. If it's anything like the 1st gen moto g, it's a no brainer.
Folks, can we stick to the topic please. I'm all for no replacement for displacement but I don't want to read up it in an updates for phone thread.
I have a sony z3 compact with a 21 mp camera. It is nowhere near as good as a galaxy s5, s6, note whatever, g3, or g4. Not even close.
MP don't mean sh*t.
Thread thoroughly cleaned! Please keep this on topic.
Thank you.

Yeah I agree, not all sensors are created equal which means you could have horrible ones and good ones. Perfect example is the 8 MP sensors on the iPhone... there are a lot of 8 MP sensors on the market that don't come anywhere close to the photos the iPhones put out, some are down right laughable. I think the G4 and S6 will have a better camera than the moto x, however I do not think it will be by much, for me as long as it is decent I will be happy.
I wonder how many days after the first few MXP's are delivered it'll take for TWRP to show up? My guess is that by the time I receive mine on the 21st, there will be a couple lightly mod'ed roms to flash.
...and then the G4 goes back in the box.

It wont take long, the play got it quickly if I'm not mistaken, just a few drivers and it will be ready to go.
After reading some more reviews, I'm not so sure the G4 has a better camera. At least not for me. I rarely take pictures, but when I do, I only take them in good lighting areas. The reviews I have read say that the MXP has a better camera than any in good lighting. That's all I need to hear to give the MXP my vote for camera as well as my previously mentioned features.

It's that time again!

I spent $160 to get the screen fixed on my LG Optimus G and it hasn't work properly since. Unfortunately U Break It won't continue to tweak the screen issues because I have since dropped the phone again (a couple of times actually) but the problems existed before that.
The drops are caused by it's Gorilla Glass back, it's slipped out of my hands if I don't have a firm grip on it.
Anyway, I was waiting for the Moto G to drop and have had my eye on the 2GB/16GB model since my LG has has similar specs. The LG does take great video and pictures (on a tripod) so I will continue to use it in some capacity.
But I need a new daily driver and I want to save money. I don't mind paying $220 for the Moto G, but I have started to look at some other devices.
So should I just get the Moto G or -
Blu Studio 5 C Super Camera
Blu Studio X Plus
Asus ZenPhone 2 (16 GB version)
I don't want any former flagships (G3, etc) I want a fresh device, not a dethroned flagship...
Thanks
