I have the US 16GB Moto G, recently I updated to 4.4.2 via the OTA update. I am wondering if there is a way to get root from here yet? Maybe I just missed it, but I haven't found any solutions looking through the forums yet except for global versions of the device.
I am a bit new to rooting as I have only done it once before and that was at least a year ago, but I usually can figure these things out, I assume some methods changed with unlocking the bootloader/rooting on 4.4.2 so I don't want to follow the old 4.3 guides.
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks for the help in advance.
Edit: Used the first option posted here , after unlocking my boot loader I flashed the 4.3 motoboot.img, everything worked well. You can there re-flash the 4.4 motoboot.img, but custom recoveries like TWRP and CWM don't work with it yet.
Unlocking the bootloader is identical. Only method is going to the website and voiding your warranty with Motorola.

I realize that but I think root is worth it, and I have had my device long enough that I doubt there are any major defects that I have missed. (Also Amazon probably still honors returns for the first 30 days or so)
Also it appears that rooting may be possible on 4.4 by flashing the 4.3 bootloader.
Okay, so a few days ago i bought a Verizon prepaid Moto G and am now using it on Tracfone. My goal is this: I am running 4.4..4 and i want to downgrade using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542219 will it work? Then, can i root with pie root and use sunshine to unlock bootloader then get perm root? Even if i could downgrade, would my service still work? But either way, thanks ahead of time.

I'd also like to know this as I just bought a prepaid Verizon model too. But I also want to know how you are using it on Tracfone. I went to their website and it said that the MEID wasn't found in their system,
Well ok, I little off topic, but the phone needs to be used with Verizon prepaid for 6 months before activation with tracfone. If tracfone says I doesn't work, I doesn't. For me, I went on eBay and just asked people for the devices mied and checked it before I bought it. I bought mine for $60 US. Sorry, no way to get around the six months.

I am actually trying to get the exact same thing done. Funny thing though, when i tried flashing the 4.4.2, none of the sparsechunks would flash, something about the bootloader rejecting preflash validation. Anyways, I flashed all the other files, and only about half of which were successful, and then booted the phone. It was still 4.4.4 and would crash and have to reboot within 30 seconds of rebooting. Eventually after trying again and again to flash 4.4.2 i tried to resurrect my broken bootloop phone by flashing 4.4.4. Worked instantly, no failed flashes, back to stock. I am beginning to think the locked bootloader will not allow you to downgrade operating systems, just reflash to stock. If anyone else knows how to fix this, I would be very grateful
Well, I guess our Kitkat Moto Gs will never see root or Cynogenmod..... But, there is always lollipop We can Dream

I catch same thing and I totally agree with you
a small chance
with lollipop on the way it's possible that some dev may find a exploit moto phones are among the first to receive the update and there is a small chance we'll get lucky and 5.0.2 will have a opening somewhere but with my luck I'll accept the update and someone will figure out how to root 4.4.4
I have recently bought a 2nd xt926 and just found it has the 183.46.15 ROM number
AFAIK is a locked and non unlockable bootloader version BUT
I have read that AFTER unlocking the bootloader and putting a new rom, you can put anything and your phone will never go back to locked again.
Is this right or am I wrong?
Is there any chance my new phone is flashable? How to know?
Thanks for your time.
So I have a Moto G xt1032 locked to one of the carriers here in Canada. I looked up how to unlock it and ended up motorola's official unlocking page for moto g. I followed the instructions and it sent me an unlock key to my email and tried that and it said unlock complete or something like that.
Now when I turn on the phone every time I see a "Warning Bootloader Unlocked" thing on the screen before startup. But when I put in a sim it asks for unlock pin. And yes I checked the sim is compatible with moto g. They even sell these phones at the carrier stores I am with.
So can it be fixed?
I have lollipop 5.0.2 installed on this phone. And I tried a downgrading to kitkat last night and it ended up wiping all my data but didn't downgrade to kitkat. The only thing I noticed on the tutorial that the tutorial was for unlocked xt1032 phones and at the time the phone was locked. So that might have been the problem.
It sounds like you're talking about 2 different locks. Motorola's method unlocks the bootloader so you can install different ROMs and such. AFAIK it has nothing to do with locking the phone to a particular carrier. I'm not sure how SIM locks work; I think you'll have to contact your carrier about that.
I bought a Moto G3 on internet, in exellent condition, everything on the phone works, but it is SIM locked (it is asking for code to unlock).
I went in 5-6 different stores and they tried to unlock it, but none of them succeed. One of them told me that they were unable to install some "drivers".
If it means something, I unlocked bootloader in meantime, it is running Android 6.
If anything comes to your mind help me, because at the moment, I can only use it as a tablet.
