I picked up a used LG G2 from Ebay. The phone is in somewhat great shape and is functional except for the top portion of the digitizer. About an inch, give or take, at the top is unresponsive to touch. I just wanted some input on how common digitizer damage is on this phone. I know most phones these days are very delicate and the digitizers and LCD's can be damaged quite easily. There is a good knick at the top of the phone so I am guessing it had been dropped at one point.
I paid $150 for the phone and I can pick up the LCD, digitizer, and mid body assembly for $65 on Ebay. Just have to slap the internals in the new mid body, throw the back cover on, and done. Phone is good as new. But I don't want to make that investment IF by some chance the problem isn't the digitizer but rather something wonky with the main board. The more input the better. Thanks guys.
It's the digitizer, I sent mine in for the same thing.. Dunno how much it cost tho cause I had warranty. Hope it goes well replacing it

Thanks MaestriFC. While I was waiting on a response for this, I noticed the phone decide to go quirky on me. I looked it up and found on XDA this is a common problem? Phantom touches, etc.? I seen a couple people say it is still the LCD and digitizer causing these issues and replacing them fixed it.
Well I dropped my phone on tile with no case so I don't think it's a common issue (unless everyone is dropping them) but from what I read the digitizer was loose so you would have to open the phone and connect it, or get it serviced, I don't remember getting Phantom touches though..

Yeah. I read on another forum about it and found links to these problems here on XDA. Apparently, this phone going spaztic is a very common thing. Which still hasn't been traced down to any one specific thing. Most are having LG replace their phones just to get another one doing the very same things. I am going to order the new LCD and digitizer though. Hopefully it fixes the issues. Maybe LG got a batch of faulty digitizers or something....lol...here's to hoping.
Make sure you do your research on replacing haha wouldn't want anything else messed up... In my opinion you should just try to connect it properly and see if that works, that's if you're going to open it anyways of course, could save some money.. Good luck

I tried that. I opened it up, and from what I could tell the phone has never been opened. The screws were tight and came out with some black stuff on the threads. That's USUALLY a sign the phone has never been opened. I reseated the top and bottom connectors for the digitizer. The one on top and the one on bottom, I didn't reseat the other one at the bottom though. But I figured that one was for the bottom portion of the digitizer anyway. Which is working. When the phone starts up, every now and again, the "LG" screen will just flicker then boot up. But most times the "LG" screen shows as normal when booting up.
I did also find out from normal calling that the microphone for speaker phone isn't working properly. Normal headset works just fine. But when I switch it to speaker phone people can barely hear me. But that microphone costs like 8 bucks to change so no big deal. I have checked out many youtube vids on fixing this phone. It can be challenging to have to remove everything but I have found just buying the LCD and digitizer already mounted to a new mid body is the easiest way to go.
So the repeating the digitizer didn't work? I would buy the two together as it would be a lot easier than separating the two.. Might just be you had a faulty one after all
Sent from my LG-D800 using XDA Free mobile app
I haven't replaced it yet MaestriFC. I will report back in a couple weeks though when I do get the new screen in and get it all replaced. What didn't work was opening her up and re seating the cables. I thought maybe something could have been or come loose but that wasn't the case.
Just an update guys. I got the whole LCD and Digitizer replaced last night. It's only been a few hours but so far everything is great. No more glitching out. As a matter of fact, I had no choice but power the phone down last week. That's how bad the glitching out got. My phone was totally unusable. But now with the new screen, it's working great. If it stays working great then we can assume the problems with this phone are the cause of bad digitizers.

A coworker I started working with a few months ago told me about the much-better Sensation he had before his MyTouch 3G. It seems that he still had it, but stopped using it "because the screen cracked." I correctly surmised that it was a simple and cheap to replace touch screen digitizer and described to him that it was "just the glass cover" and that it was "cheap to replace." I have done many such repairs on other phones and gadgets.
He then told me that he had continued to use it until the LCD went blank. There is no reason to think that the LCD inside suddenly cracked, but I can only assume that it also sustained some kind of damage and now also requires replacement. Knowing that the LCD isn't cracked, what are the chances that a replacement LCD + digitizer will restore the phone? I'm concerned because we've already purchased a kit for $65.
Nobody can tell you that off the internet. If we do, that would be pure guess, just as accurate as you would have guessed.

Well, someone could have had the exact same problem and already tried it. I ran into people with the same problem already. I'm just looking for more because some, no doubt, have tried it and others may have an alternate explanation. Reasonable.
there is a good chance that will fix the problem. but since the LCD was working for a while until it blank out, it is possible the problem might be with the circuit board. only way to know is to try it out.

The LCD could go blank for several reasons. Faulty LCD, loose cable, faulty board etc. etc. Even if someone had the same problem, the reason for it could be completely different, thefore this wont help you at all except for giving you hope. If this is what you need, then i would say "yes, the change of lcd & digitizer should fix the problem" but you never can be sure unless you try When you start the phone, do you hear the startup sound? This could at least indicate that the phone isnt completely faulty.

The plus side is that you can't make it worse. So you've got nothing to lose by trying to repair it, other than the few bucks for the parts.
Well, I took it apart to re-seat all the cables and it's still blank. Reading online, I see that a lot of dropped Sensations/Pyramids develop a loose/broken SMT capacitor component near the headphone jack, but I'm not registered on any of the forums I see it discussed on and I can't see the pics. They describe a slightly different problem anyway (screen goes blank after standby). I needed sleep, so I put it all back together and I'll check that out when the parts get here. My hunch is that the LCD panel is fine and that I'll have an extra, assuming the capacitor problem is fixable. I've done some delicate soldering work before but I can't really say that I'm good at it! I didn't see any loose SMT components rattling around so I hope it didn't fall completely out somewhere.

Thanks but it's almost $70 for the parts.
Works great! Well, it had the touchscreen sensitivity issue pretty badly but the T-Mobile OTA update fixed that. Transferring all the adhesive bits from one screen to another was down-right frustrating, but I pulled it off and I only see a single spec of dust inside. The dude will be thrilled. I broke the earhook on my Looxcie so I did not make a video but it was full of me tearing and ripping the things anyway and not a good example of how it should be done!
FWIW, there was no way to remove the old screen without denting up the backing plate and prying the heck out of it to free it from multiple adhesives and glues, so I would not have had two good LCDs after testing the replacement even if there was nothing wrong with the original. Good thing it was the LCD at fault! I didn't have to drill anything like the glass replacement video I watched instructed me to do. They didn't realize that the LCD removal allows the flex PCB through just fine. I forgot to thread it back through before seating the replacement LCD in the adhesives and tape left-overs but it flexed enough to allow it through without removing, which was quite a relief after seeing how the original fared after being removed.
Okay strait to the point! I've got a Galaxy S2 with Android 4.0.3 bought it 4 months ago.
I accidently dropped my phone and cracked my screen on the bottom right corner. The crack went from bottom and a diagonal line up til the right side. I took a picture below.
imageshack(.)us/photo/my-images/685/20120326152703.jpg
This happened about 2 months ago. No problem since. I dropped the phone a few times afterward but it didnt seem to affect it lucky me.
Yesterday i tried watch some series over my WIFI and the phone got really hot around the camera area. The phone wasn't acting well either and then battery dropped from 75% til about 10% in 10 minutes without any video still showing up. (Never had that problem before). I stopped using it and instead put it on recharge for the next day. And today on the morning it was still okay. Went to school and back with the mobile still working. Put it on my table and checked my PC.
About 2 hours later while cheking up on my galaxy i discovered this.
imageshack(.)us/photo/my-images/198/20120326153629.jpg
I think that the LCD finally busted but i need to be sure if it has something to do with the previous crack and also if you could provide any info about what to do with it? Does my warrenty cover this? Or do i need extra insuranse?
I really need help right now LCD blackned spots
The screen has started to turn black from the core of the LCD leak. I now really think this is a broken LCD screen and not a software problem. If someone knows what i could do to fix this i really could need the help right now.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong,
But it sounds to me like you've busted the digitizer portion of your device. As to it being caused by the small crack on your screen.. i don't really know(can't really see if it's a crack in the glass or digi). At any rate, judging from the second picture you provided us it most definitely looks like you damaged the digitizer.
Most companies don't really cover damaged screens caused by users. However, being that your S2 is only 4 months old you could possibly pass it as "it did it by itself, I don't know what happen". Worth a shot I guess...
If all fails you could bring it to a electronics repair shop or you can repair it yourself via a digitizer part bought on ebay(probably pretty expensive being that its part of the screen)
If all else fails check ebay for a new screen.

If your thinking about taking the DIY road I found a screen for you.Quick note about buying something overseas on eBay: it usually takes awhile for the part to ship and even when you get it, the part may not be functional. But don't fret, eBay is usually pretty good about stuff like this so a working part will be guaranteed or your money back!
If you do decide to repair it yourself I would first research A LOT about your phone. Especially, the disassembly guide! Try to use only credible guides such as iFixit, repair universe etc.
This only applies to flex ribbon cables:
when replacing screens sometimes you have to plug it in a few times before you actually get it to respond(could be cause by oxidation of the pins) if thats the case, you could try to take a #2 pencil eraser and gently rub against the pins and remove the oxidation...
Good Luck!
Please let me know how it goes!

Yes it is really a crack and a very annoying one. It doesn't cause any problems with the touch-function, so I've been using it normally but for the screen, it has gone completely black but for the top right part still a little darkblue. I think I'm going with your first answer and try to check it in on warranty have had a bit luck with it past couple of times but im not sure about changing it myself. If having no luck with warranty then maybe ill try doing it myself.
at any rate weather you get warranty to change it or you fix it yourself maybe youll learn to be more careful and get a case maybe???
hello all looked every where seen similar ? but know answers any where .....have mt4gs that wont turn on just vibrates once was having problems with screen stuff looked distorted rainbow colored or screen not responding would have play with phone like slide keyboard in and out to get working again .....couldnt get to work pulled out battery put back in wouldnt start up.......same thing happen to the one before that similar prob still have it does same thing vibrates once........from what i gather from other posts is it might be flex cable have it apart flex cable looks fine ...would i be able to see if flex cable is messed up......... could it just be something came loose.......these are both factory oem no mods ...
If it's still under any kind of warranty I'd send it back with a note to quit returning the same phone to you. If you CAN send it, put a small indelible mark under the battery so you can check. If it's NOT covered you could theoretically fix it yourself if you're "electronics repair" inclined but it's not for the faint of heart....i.e., not easy.
If they try to SELL you another, you can get them on Ebay for half of what they'll try to sell you one for. For what they'll try to sell you one for, you can buy a Nexus 4 from google that's unlocked.....with enough change to take your GF out for a nice meal. A REALLY nice meal.
no warranty , not new to electronic repair or modding ....have two of these phone dont want to throw them out ..especially if it only needs and 18 dollar flex cable ...which would be cheaper than buying any used phone....... trying to find some info first so i dont waste money on flex cable for no reason ...ps phone is totally apart..........i think phone is turning on but nothing happens with screen and screen was buuging out when stopped working both times on both phones ..... any ideas thanx
Look at all the videos first.....

I just rebuilt my Slide (bought a new one that had a bad M/B on eBay for $65)--I tried to replace the digitizer & ended up breaking the LCD screen...The flex cable is between the LCD & the screen back mount....so it's not the easiest job.......Do yourself a favor & check out all the video on youtube first.
not a problem ..phones apart ...got skillz..... just looking for info ....i can take apart and put back together just about anything thats not the problem.ive done digi's ,broken screens, flex cables, power and volume buttons............ ive heard of this problem before just want to make sure i have the right solution ...so i dont buy the wrong part thank you
ps ...please no more posts about how hard it is.....
He does have a point, this phone is a pain in the ass compared to most, I too have disassembled many phones used to have a side business repair phones, and this was is possibly the biggest pain when it comes to how much sticky is used.
Anyway yeah it sounds like the main flex cable and that's where I would start.

So end result fixed first one....installed new main flex cable.....and tested it powered up and works fine just have to go back and screw her all together...was pain in the ass at the point where you need to separate lcd from slide housing but well worth will do another one tomorrow ....always first ones a ***** but not as hard as made to seem ......if any one needs help get at me will give pointers. will update again tomorrow
if any one has mt4gs and vibrates once and screen does not turn on its good bet its the main flex cable
same issue....

the phone was givin to me and i ordered the part on ebay it came from china. the package says. LH00042 LCD DISPLAY TOUCH SCREEN FOR MYTOUCH 4G. how would i know if it is the right part?
There are a few ways, usually the manufacturer is stickered on the back or product number. If you can't find this there is a line indented across the back of one and not the others

This forum is dedicated to the MT4GS. Your description indicates the MT4G. Different devices.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
It started out simple. At first, the screen would cut off when I closed the keyboard sometimes...and then all the time. Next, the touch screen stopped working. Afterwards, the screen would freeze occasionally. Now, I can't see the screen at all.
I'm not ready to give up on this phone yet. I'm just not sure if it's a digitizer and sensor, or the flex cable issue. Does anybody have a clue?
90% need a new flex, be sure to get one with the speaker soldered on to make life easier and take your time reading before disassembly, lots o sticky stuff there

If both the LCD and digitizer are having problems (with no signs of external or water damage), I'd suspect the flex cable as well.
Thanks!
I thought so, but I was in denial. I've only ever replaced digitizers, so I was hoping I just had to do something like that again.
By the way demkantor, what's the other 10%?
9% digitizer going bad and then soon after LCD, 1% software/firmware issue 90% get a new flex. So if it were me id buy the flex, or at least open it up and have a peek around

Changed my flex two times by now, first time lcd showed color noise, second time touch died.
First time there were rips on the flex, second time - nothing particular.

My MT4GS has just gone blank after 3 years of continuous use. Screen went random colour pattern, then totally black, though phone is still working fine behind it.
I've done a search, but places like http://www.etradesupply.com/htc/android-models/htc-mytouch-4g-slide.html suggest there are two - a motherboard flex and a slide rail flex that look very similar but are two different prices. I'm a long way from USA, so spares take a long time to ship and are expensive. Can anyone recommend a supplier/specification so I get the right one? Help much appreciated. Thanks.
In the link you sent those are one in the same, can't say why the prices differ but one may have speaker and one not, I'm on mobile so its hard to zoom in and tell.
As for supplier I'm in the us and have just purchased from random eBay people before so I can't say what's best for you
Also note it is possible you're LCD is bad (but bless likely the cause) if you are to get one of these know which one you have first (there are a couple out there and aren't interchangeable)

Thanks - reading other posts on other threads (inlcuding one guy who posted a picture of exactly the last thing I saw on my screen before it went black (-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2092608)) seems to point to the flex. That post also has a link to an ebay sale, but the picture has been taken down so I've only got the name to go on. And of course that doesn't match what I can but other places so I'm just guessing at the moment..
Is it the main motherboard flex? Perhaps I'll have to strip the phone at the weekend and see if I can work it out... Oh well, another thing to add to the To-Do list. No wait, that's on my phone and I can't get at it!
Maxx DE here.
So im an idiot and had a few too many and dropped my phone real hard on the sidewalk and cracked the screen. Its my fault, she went down hard and now had a few small cracks thru the screen. Normally I wouldnt mind, as they are not too noticable, but it seems to have split right through the capacitive buttons down at the bottom of the phone. This is now causing issues with those buttons functioning properly.
I have successfully disabled them and gotten the phone working with on screen nav buttons, but i am still seeing slight issues with the performance of the screen. Mainly i believe because even though the buttons now do not control anything, the phone still can see they are being touched. (my symptoms are the screen will not timeout sometimes, as well as increased battery drain i think from the registering of all the button presses from the crack). Otherwise the screen works fine.
I have been reading up on a few options. Moto wants 200 buckos to repair the phone. I have found the lens/overlay for the screen/digitizer but i have been watching youtubes, and it seems pretty difficult to properly remove the LOCA glue and reapply the new lens, especially for someone who has never repaired a phone before.
So my question to you guys is, has anyone ever just repaired the lens/overlay and had successes? Should i just pony up the 200 and have Moto fix my phone? Are there any reputable repair shops in NYC that members have used (I hear a lot of horror stories about these screen repair places and am hesitant about just trying one out)?
Thanks!
I would send to Moto. Little cash no more worrying about it, don't have ship around for days, don't have to ask a lot of ?, and I know it was done right with original parts not some knock off our quality no name parts. But that's me, my sanity and time is worth the money to me.

Ya, thats what i have been leaning towards more and more, as i research and look at parts. Seems the safe way for self-repair is to buy the whole front LCD+Glass assembly, which in that case is like 20 bucks cheaper.
It just seems redic to me that asurion does not cover developer editions which is crazy since i have been paying for that insurance for the past year. It would have been nice of them to tell me that my phone wasnt covered when i activated it.
Yeah no kidding. If was paying for the insurance on a phone that wasn't covered I would throw a fit to get refunded. That's like getting a car loan only to find out it's not for your car.

Yeah, i was thinking that, but for $20 more I will prob just send it to moto for piece of mind that the repair will be done right and backed by them.
