T-Mobile could very well limited those plan to non-phone devices such as tablet.
Those plans are for tablets only, not phones. They don't provide airtime and if you tried to activate it on a phone, it most likely wouldn't even work.
Thank you for your reply! How about activate those plans via non-phone device such as tablet then insert activated SIM into Nexus 5, will it work?

Doubt it will. If they don't want you using it on a phone, then you won't be able to.
Using PC or phone to try to activate a new SIM for data only plan simply would not work. I got stuck with ConnectMe from T-Mobile web page and could not go any further.
As a result, I went to Walmart to buy a T-Mobile 4G Mobile HotSpot - Orange. I had visited a total of four Walmart stores. Only the fourth store still have the device in stock. The price is $49.88 plus 9% sales tax. Total came out as $54.37. The device package came with a SIM that includes 5 GB of data available for three months from first use. This means that my monthly mobile phone cost has further gone down to $18.13 from $30 as I have been using $30 per month pre-paid plan with 100 minutes talk, unlimited text and data with first 5 GB up to LTE speeds. However, my actual usage has been less than 10 minutes talk (due to wrong number or telemarketing as I do not give out this mobile phone number at all), few test texts with about a dozen free T-Mobile text messages (information from T-Mobile) and only about 600 MB data consumed each month. This is because I usually have Wi-Fi access except driving. When I drive, I can hardly use phone except making and receiving calls and check traffic condition. Therefore, I felt the $30 mobile phone service was over bought.
T-Mobile 4G Mobile HotSpot - Orange only support up to HSPA+ speeds. Once my phone was connected to the device via Mi-Fi, I opened the web browser to go to http://www.t-mobile.com/ConnectMe, it stated they had been waiting for me! I simply gave name, e-mail address, password and ZIPcode, then I was connected. Speed tests showed much slower than LTE speeds, like about 5 mbps down and 1 mbps up with over 100 ms ping. VoIP worked stationary, have not tested when driving.
Since the SIM for T-Mobile 4G Mobile HotSpot - Orange uses regular size (big) SIM, I had to cut it down to the size of micro SIM (medium) to fit into Google Lexus 5 by LG. Once the cut down size SIM inserted into Google Lexus 5 by LG and turned on the phone, it showed it is connected to LTE signals. Speed tests show about 25 mbps down and 20 mbps up with 40 ms ping. VoIP as well as all other data required apps work fine. T-Mobile did assign a 10 digits telephone number like device number based on ZIPcode entered by me. However, calling the device number got recording saying "At subscriber's request, this phone does not accept incoming call, message CA***58"; where *** means 3 digits number that changed every time when called. Sending text to the device number will get auto-reply stating "Free Msg: Receiver 1NPANXXYYYY unable to receive message - Message Blocking is active. Date: 09/29/2014 6:02 am"; where NPANXXYYYY is the 10 digits device number. Therefore, I am indeed getting mobile version of cutting landline telephone -- only getting Internet access from phone (like dry loop DSL) or cable company.
Log into My T-Mobile Online | Access Messages, Minutes & Bills | T-Mobile, it shows I have "Nexus 5 (D820)". In other words, T-Mobile is aware of I am using phone instead of T-Mobile 4G Mobile HotSpot - Orange (which had showed as "MF61 Liberty") or tablet, but still allow it.
I tried to port out the DID with $30 pre-paid phone to Ring.to. T-Mobile rejected it due to invalid account number despite per Find your account number | T-Mobile Support, my pre-paid account number should be the phone number. I had to print My T-Mobile Online web pages for $30 pre-paid plan into PDF files then e-mail to Ring.to support to finally have T-Mobile releases the DID to Ring.to today.
I am aware of T-Mobile plans to restore Pay in Advance Mobile Internet Monthly Passes for 1 GB from currently $10 back to $20 by the end of this year. If they indeed are doing that which I highly doubt it since it will have higher price than Sprint, my back up plan is to buy FreedomPop Freedom Spot MiFi 500 LTE (it appears this is the only Mi-Fi device they have that supports LTE) for about $162 including sales tax, shipping & handling and always place this Mi-Fi device in my car as I do not go places without my car. My phone will always connect to this Mi-Fi device whenever I do not have Wi-Fi. I consider this back up plan as paying one and half year of mobile data only service in advance for about $10 per month. What do you guys think?
I hope above information provided is useful by others similar situated.
Updated information as of 2014-10-06:
On Tuesday, September 30, 2014 after 7 p.m. I had people telling me in person that I was not answering call. I checked and found out all softphone apps went offline. I used web browser to check web sites, only could reach T-Mobile sites. Eventually, I had to place the SIM back into T-Mobile 4G Mobile HotSpot - Orange and had phone connect to the HotSpot, then Internet connection was restored but with HSPA+ instead of LTE.
Consequently, since Wednesday, October 1, 2014, I have gone back to T-Mobile $30 per month pre-paid plan with 100 minutes talk, unlimited text and data with first 5 GB up to LTE mobile network technology via a new SIM.
Upon additional search, I found out T-Mobile phone and data SIMs are not interchangeable between phone and tablet.
As a result, Red Pocket data-only plan is the only option now. One can get first ½ GB for just 1¢ that is what I am going to try next.

Hi,
in a few days I will be going in vacations (lucky me) in Mexico. But I don't want to pay for international Datas. I want to use my phone only has a phone and will contect thru Wifi when available.
ma question is: If the "Data roaming" (settings-wireless and network- mobile networks) is un checked, is that mean it will "cut" the datas as soon as I'm not with ATT?
Thanks
Yes, but you'll still be subject to roaming charges for voice and messaging.
- Dial *#*#INFO#*#* which is *#*#4636#*#*
- Go to Phone Info
- You can hit your "More" softkey and there will be a menu with an option called More
There should be an option that says disable data on boot. Now any time you restart your phone you should not be getting data network

yes, but in my case I have to be able to anwer calls
Duh, I guess I selectively absorb content I read. I just get sim cards locally and pass that number to the people I need to stay in touch with. Granted it's only a select few though, perhaps that's why it's practical for me. It's the more cost efficient way for me. I do have an unlocked winmo phone that I use abroad for this.
Turn off data, and call at&t and sign up for the international plan. You can cancel it after the vacation and it is pro-rated. I went on a cruise to mexico and ended up paying like $120 on less than a half hour of calls back home.
I am on a trip in Brazil right now, and have the exact same requirements. I turn off Data Roaming so that I don't run up any data charges. Just to be safe, I also turned off sync for Google, Twitter, and Facebook. I signed up for the AT&T International Plan at $5.99 per month, which makes calls between US and Brazil at $1.99 per minute. Text messages are $.80 each. If you really want to save money on calls, take a laptop and use Skype. I can call a US landline from Skype for $.02 per minute, not quite free, but it feels like it compared to the AT&T rate.
just fff up your apn.. but remember settings.. that is what the disable/enable data widgets do anyway.. screw up something in the apn and you will get no data.

you can use nimbuzz on your phone to connect to skype thru wifi
Simple as turning off data roaming, I went to Mexico City a few weeks ago and didn't incur any data charges. I've been there a few times with my iPhone and haven't had to pay anything extra either. Just make sure you get the AT&T Mexico feature. It's $4.99 a month and .59 a minute while roaming in Mexico.
Mexico Plans
I am currently travelling to Mexico every week for business and signed up for a voice plan.
Instead of the regular $59.99 plan giving 900 minutes, I have a $74.99 plan that allows me to use my minutes while in Mexico also. ATT has some weird scheming where they say, the first month you can use all of the 900 mins, 2nd month only 40% of the minutes, 3rd month again 900, 4th month 40% only, and so on. Go figure what the smartypants at ATT were dreaming when they created this plan.
But again, everytime I call ATT, the idiots give me a new answer. SMS and MMS, I have gotten multiple answers, so i try not to use it.
Data plan - ATT will rip you naked in a few minutes of data usage. It's like $20 per 10MB or something like that - that's if you sign up for a plan before hand. If not, it gets even more ridiculous.
So, bottom line, if you need to make/receive calls on your US #, signup for one of those international plans. Forget data. SMS - I don't know.
Turnoff data roaming - settings --> Wireless Networks --> Mobile networks --> Data roaming uncheck.
Verizon has a $35 unlimited data plan (on top of your regular plan), if you have a choice.
edit: btw, I am unable to call any toll free #s while in Mexico. Whether those calls are allowed or not seems to be dependent on the combination of ATT and local carrier (for me Telcel). Didn't have this problem with Verizon.
For what it's worth, the international plans and the flip flopping of at&t reps is what drove me to simply give up using my phone abroad. I am somewhere south of the US almost weekly, so for me it is a big issue. I eventually resorted to picking up local sim cards, which works for me. I usually spend max of $10 for the sim and a bucket of mins, which also includes texting if need be. All incoming calls are free, which is what makes it work for me.
Enough of the thread jacking for me.
Ok this is not vibrant at all but i didn't know where else to post this besides TMO forum, which is pure ****.
I have a family plan, 4 phones on it. and 1 home phone.
we are on a plan that offers unlim text, 750 minutes talk.
Does the home phone get unlimited minutes? I've heard it does, can someone confirm or deny?
I prototyped the @home phone system and also have it.
Anyway, the [email protected] phone gets unlimited minutes yes, and from my experience it also is considered under mobile-mobile (free) if your one of the people whom have that option.
Yes, If you are on a grandfathered plan. I have the the same plan with 3 lines and [email protected] which is not offered anymore. If you upgrade to any of the new family plans the home phone will use the pool of minutes. That's the reason i'm gonna keep my grandfathered plan as long as I can.
First off no disrespect to badaphooko01 I am no guru by any means...
Anyway don't confuse [email protected] with [email protected] which many do. The @home service uses a special router (Hi-point) to connect regular land-line calls to their network via the internet. The [email protected] service uses any router to connect (reroute) your cell via wifi to their network, think old style wifi calling. Even the CS reps at T-mobile get these confused and will quote the pulling from mobile pool info, although it is incorrect.
Anyway the @home service has unlimited calling anywhere in the US, while the [email protected] service was unlimited but later transitioned to using mobile minutes (early adopters were grandfathered). Also the @home land-line service is no longer offered to customers, but they will continue to support those of us who already have it.
I am going to call and find out for sure but it would very stupid for one to have a land-line replacement which pulls minuted from their pool of mobile minutes.
****
Ok so I called and spoke with a friend at T-Mobile and it turns out that if one changes plans, then the @home Service price will increase to $15 per month, but will still be unlimited. But one benefit of changing to a new plan will be that wifi-calling will be free (not pull from pool). They also will increase the price on my grandfathered unlimited messaging plan to $20 per month.
*****
Anyway here is some info, but it is hard to find any official information from [email protected] due to them no longer offering it to new customers.

No disrespect taken...
It's funny how things always change at Tmobile or how all csr's are not all on the same page. I called about this 2 months ago because I maybe wanted to up my wife's data but I was told that it would $20 more unless i changed my whole plan at that point my [email protected] would be considered an extra line and would take minutes from our family plan. That would be ridiculous as we make and receive many call on our home line so at that point I declined.
It just won't work on this phone for me. I get redirected to a tmobile login page everytime I enter a website. Called tmobile/visit the store and they tried to fix it for hours but there's no solution besides changing the data plan. The plan works fine on my GNex. Maybe the problem and solution is similar to this?

My knowledge of Android is too limited to find a fix so maybe someone that knows what they're might have an idea.
t-mobile web2go data plan not working on nexus 5
Same exact scenario for me. I've been trying to test different APNs that worked on my Nexus 4 but to no avail. I'm really hoping with is able to find a solution for this. I've used the web2go plan for my HTC hero, GNexus, and Nexus 4. t-mobile agents are telling me to upgrade to the premium internet. I'm having doubts that this will work for this phone because of the LTE network. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!!

tmobile is in the process of switching EVERYONES (yes everyones, you dont have a choice in the matter) grandfathered plans to their new simple choice plans. So basically, they wont let you transfer it to a new phone, ANY new phone. and even with your current phone, you will be forced to switch, eventually.
I would suggest just bite the bullet now and switch, because its happening sooner or later
Are you using the same old Sim card, trimmed down to micro-size or did you manage to switch to a new micr-Sim and spoke to CS to update it - otherwise, LTE and even HSPA won't be provisioned properly for it, that is - if grandfathered plans are allowed to run on 3G/4G LTE signals.
Good grief - we had a T-Mo p/p line using a Moto candy bar phone a few years ago with free web2go, super slow as in GPRS speed, not even Edge or 2G, since discontinued & transitioned to PAYG with Gold status - I use it as backup for emergencies since my primary carrier is CDMA with Big Red (well, not for long - less than 2 weeks before the big switch)
My PAYG line was/is still on the 25 cents per minute calling plan with data - but, I managed to update the activated Sim card in use to a brand new micro-sim card, and I'm using the N5 with Google Voice & Talkatone to make "test" calls over WiFi at home & in the field offices - I switched over to the $3 daily unlimited call/text & 200MB data plan just to test out LTE, and it worked - great speed & flawless. Speed is far superior to VZW's 3G data under speedtest condition.
I tried to stay current with "tweaks" over at Howardforum as well - IMO - there's no way to access HSPA/LTE if you stay on those old plans with grandfathered t-zones & sneak in.

I got the micro SIM made last year when I got the nexus 4. Wasn't aware that there were different provisions regarding SIM cards. It's looking more like switching data plans is the only solution.
I'll take another crack with T-Mo CS.
Thanks all.
I have a Nexus 5 and I am using a Straight Talk (AT&T) sim card.
Now that Hangouts can do WiFi calling I need a plan with very few talk minutes and minimal data. I use WiFi at home, work, coffee shops, etc....
So who has the cheapest monthly plan with talk minutes (maybe 300?) and a small data plan (maybe 1GB?) with a sim card that will work in a Nexus 5?
Thank you for your time and replies.

T-Mobile $30/month prepaid?
Tmobile 30 dollar is cheapest. If you want att then: think cricket is cheapest, but it still comes with unlimited minutes anyways
I've been looking at this as well. T-Mobile appears to be cheapest as indicated above. Cricket and straight talk are next at $45 with auto pay.
I will take a look at T-Mobile.... Thank you for all of the replies.
Check out the List of United States mobile virtual network operators one by one to see which one best fit your need.
In fact, I am looking for similar service, see my thread T-Mobile Pay in Advance Mobile Internet Monthly Passes please. I do not even need voice minutes as I can always use VoIP if I have Internet connection either via Wi-Fi or mobile data. However, I would like to have text feature due to text via the Internet does not support shortcode texting from business.
Please kindly post your finding and if you find a plan best fit my need let me know as well, thank you!
RingPlus
RingPlus uses sprint towers and offers 400 voice minutes, 400 texts, and 300mb data for $10 on the nexus5. Not sure if that's enough data for you, but it's a great deal nonetheless.
TMobile 30$ prepaid
100 Talk
Unlimited Text
5Gigs of LTE then 2G after that.

I'm looking for a no contract phone plans where users receive cell phone services in an inexpensive, flexible way. These plans are recommended for people seeking the most economical way to have a cell phone. The first thing I did when choosing a cell phone plan is to find out what companies have decent coverage in my home and in the areas I frequent.
When it comes to cell phone plans, you can go with one of the big cell phone providers (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon) or opt for a smaller company's (Mint Mobile, Ting Mobile, Red Pocket and FreedomPop) they even have their pros and cons. After doing a little research I found many cell phone plans you can purchase threw eBay, Amazon and Best Buy at a much better price then going directly threw the carrier or there website.
If you have a good plan or using a plan listed in this post, please let us know your experience. Thanks!

It looks like Red Pocket Mobile doesn't support tethering, but eBay has 360 day unlimited plans for $19.00 a month that is great, now I would like to find a plan that supports tethering at that price.
MintMobile
MintMobile Bulk Pricing On Wireless!
Purchase 6 months at $15 a month Mint SIM include unlimited talk, text, and 2G data, with the choice of 2GB, 5GB, or 10GB of LTE data and tethering. Currently, the three-month plans have been discounted to the 12-month plans rates as a teaser offer, making them a better deal than the six-month plans. I like that Mint SIM allows tethering for WIFI calling, many of the other plans I have found don't include tethering for this price.
Mint SIM doesn’t offer domestic roaming, but it does have international roaming plans. It offers a flat rate of five cents per outbound text (inbound are free) and 25 cents per minute for voice calls in nearly 150 countries. Mexico and Canada’s rates are discounted at two cents per text and six cents per minute of voice calling.

Ting Mobile Pay As You Go!
Ting uses Sprint and T-Mobile carriers, If you're not looking for unlimited use and don't use much data, then Ting could work for you. It looks great if your like me as far as phone use is concerned, I usually use WiFi for calling when I need to use my phone and internet purposes. It looks to be a good alternative when you need a phone for traveling in case of emergency and still be able to connect to WiFi when you reach your destination. if you can deal with a few drawbacks, you can save a lot of money.
Ting offers customization levels of service after paying a flat $6 monthly line charge. Usage is categorized into tiers: The first 1 to 100 minutes, for example, cost $3, the next tier $9, and the next $18. There are also tiers for SMS and data usage. The company’s complete rates are on its official Ting website. A moderate usage plan of 100 voice minutes, 100 texts, and 1GB data would end up costing $28 on Ting.
Ting offers free domestic roaming for voice and text, and international roaming for GSM phones in numerous countries around the world. Pricing for international roaming can be quite high, however. If you aren’t bringing your own phone, Ting sells devices directly for a lump sum or financing via Affirm.
If you’re thinking of moving to Ting, the company says it will pay 25 percent of the early termination fee (ETF) from your current carrier up to $75.

MintMobile (Formerly MintSim) For me!!
I don't use too much data.. And T-mobile has good service in my area. SO I've totally fallen in love with MintMobile [tmobile mvno]! you can pay in 3/6/12 month increments. I pay the 12 month for about 180ish? Which averages out to about $15/mo.
The "catch" is that this is only for 2gb data. Unlimited minutes/texts though. Some people have had issues testing the "unlimited" part but I don't use my phone for too much other than Reddit haha.
They also support wifi calling!!!
btw. they also have 5gb and 10gb plans.

After posting above post #4 regarding Mint Mobile and your experience, I'm really liking what MintMobile plans are offering. I noticed if your a first time subscriber you can go for the three month plan with unlimited text and talk with 2gb of data for $45.00 and a risk free 7-day money back guarantee. Then If you like the service you can get the same $15.00 a month service if you choose the 12 month plan. Looks to be a great choice for people that don't mind using WiFi at home or traveling using free hotspots to save on data.

What's Your Real Time & Monthly Cell Plan Usage App
I have been looking at some of the less expensive pre-paid plans for my phone and noticed there wasn't to many android applications that will keep track of your phone plan usage so I don't go over my call, sms and data plan amount. I found one called dodol Phone (data, call, Text) that uses google services but will still run without gapps installed, this app provides real-time daily and monthly usage report and you can also setup custom limits. I just started using this app and it has several issues with translation and crashing when adjusting setting. Be nice to find a open source app with dual SIM card compatibility.
I use Yalp Store to download applications I can't find on F-Droid, plus Yelp Store can do a Exodus Privacy Scan to see how many trackers the application has, this one has 14. I use two security applications to block or send fake data to trackers, one is AFWall+ that works as a firewall and XPrivacyLua that feeds apps fake data instead of real data. One thing I just noticed I like with this app, from the notifications bar pull down you can see the dodol Phone (data, call, Text) usage menu or you can also use there widget. It would be great to find a open source application similar to this one. So if you have a better alternative, please let me know... Thanks!

Getting Started
So what do you get for $0.99? That first month will give you 100% unlimited talk and text, as well as 4GB of data. Your phone will be using the Nationwide 4G LTE Network, so you know you’ll have excellent connectivity.
Downgrade to the 100% Free Basic Plan Before Your 14 Day Trial Ends!. Unlike many mobile service providers, FreedomPop does not require any contracts and it levies no termination fees (or any of the other don’t-let-the-door-hit-you-on-the-way-out fees), which means your free 14 day trial is truly free.
Before the 14 days ends, you have several options for continuing with FreedomPop’s service, including the option of downgrading to their 100% Free Basic Plan. As long as you downgrade to the 100% Free Basic Plan within 14 days of starting your free trial, you’ll enjoy continuous free service. Try FreedomPop for free.
The 100% Free Basic Plan offers you 200 voice minutes, 500 texts, and 200MB of data per month—which you’ll probably recognize as fairly low talk, text and data numbers. In particular, the 200MB of data would be insufficient for anyone who has regular data needs, including anyone who streams music or podcasts from their phones.
FreedomPop specifically states that their free service is meant for light users, which translates to being able to check email and browse Facebook on the go rather than watch YouTube videos in all of your downtime.
