[Q] Lockscreen Questions - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I just picked up an M8 today. Haven't played around much yet, but do have some questions regarding the lockscreen. Is there a way to completely remove shortcuts and swipe direction functionality from the lockscreen? I really just want the unlock icon and the only thing to happen when i swipe it is for it to take me to my pin keypad. I've seen similar posts with no solution to do so. Some state that they will be whatever shortcuts are on my homescreen. I know i will be running unrooted for a few months so no custom lockscreens for me yet. Thanks in advance!

bump
i was playing around with my girlfriend's note2 and hers does this too. i think i just am so used to having a custom lockscreen that i dont remember having these shortcuts. not sure...

Do a Google search for HTC aosp lockscreen. I saw a how-to near the top of results

ah, saw those. have to be rooted though. i'm giving my phone at least a month or 2 stock before i root. maybe... thanks though!

[ Q ] Friend just rooted my phone. Browser annoyance. One finger zoom?????

A friend rooted my phone today since i don't know how. He said he left its rooted but nothing is flashed as far as roms. While browsing on my web now something very annoying is happening. Wether in landscape or portrait mode if i drag my finger on the edge of the screen on either side in zooms in and out instead of scrolling....is there a function that turns this off. It is driving me crazy.
Rooting wouldnt cause that to happen. What browser are you using? the stock one?
I believe it's a function under the motion settings
Sent from my VS920 4G using xda app-developers app
Yes i am using the stock browser. I did not see anything in the motion settings that revolves around what is happening. I also did not see anything in the browser settings that enables/disables it either.
The edge zooms in and out while touching the middle scrolls up and down. Tapping the screen also zooms in and out.

I dl the official jellybean update when it officially came out from vzw. I was not rooted then and i did not notice this at all. I only noticed it today after i was rooted. It is really annoying as my fingers mostly scroll along the edges of the screen. I use pinch to zoom and double tap. Is there a way to take it off? It is driving me nuts.
No you can't take it off as you can not change how an app uses a smartphone's touch functions. If its that big of a deal breaker for you then I don't know what to tell you as all apps have a set way to utilize the touch screen and not one of them have a way to alter the touch screen only the app itself. Also with all mobile phones there is no touch screen setting so if you want to drag your fingers up and down on the edge of the screen to scroll a website you will have to find a browser that utilizes that function.

But it didn't do it before i got rooted. He installed jellybean build 8 i believe and took it off cause the photos in the camera didn't work just the videos showed. I believe the build had a choice for the note 2 camera wich was chosen. None the less he brought it back to stock but kept it rooted.
Just talked to a friend on non rooted official jellybean release from verizon. His browser does NOT do this.

I think you're the only person that find it annoying as most don't see it as a big deal. That is mostly because a whole lot worse can happen to your phone and that isn't one of them. I have had signal issues,Wi-Fi issues, boot loops, sim card issues and even soft bricked my phone 3 times while rooting and flashing my phone. If you find your issue annoying then I can only imagine how you feel if you experience any of the problems I just mentioned. Your phone is functional as your friend did a good job rooting your phone you should checking for more serious problems with your phone.

not a fan of any non stock web browser....chrome seems sluggish and def not as smooth as stock...also it doesn't have the pinch to zoom all the way in to get to the windows you have open.
I agree he can test out other browsers to see if he encounters the same problem.

Well in interest of this getting back on track have you tried to simply clear the app data for browser? Also check your phone status to make sure you ate on the official build and upper friend didn't just put another stock ROM on it to replace build 8, I'm assuming it was beans build 8

[Q] Stuck with no root, what's next?

I am not the only one on this topic. I have come to a conclusion that my device (Razr maxx HD 9.30.1.XT926) won't be getting any root. Alright, what is next? What sorts of recommendations do you guys have to improve my phone? Faster Google Now response, tips and tricks? Anything to hold off till the unscheduled (at least to the public) 4.4 update.
Thanks!
Honestly, the only advantage root has vs unrooted so far as this phone goes is the complete removal of bloatware vs disabling it all. You can still disable any and all bloatware by holding the app int he app drawer, opening the app info, uninstall any updates if the option is present, then ultimately disable the junk. This will stop from phone resources being used to crapware on your phone, and will also help with the speed the phone, and of rebooting if you need to.
Lacking root, you're unable to utilize something like GravityBox to give little tweaks to your phone (one I'm fond of being the "Clear All" button in the recent apps drawer) or the Xposed Installer. Not the end of the world; GravityBox and Xposed doesn't have much outside of small quality of life tweaks for your phone. You'll live.
You are still able to install APK's from unknown sources. You are still able to use Nova Launcher to replace the disgusting Verizon phone icons (Phone, SMS, Contacts, Camera, etc) with stick KitKat icons. In fact, Nova Launcher can make your home screen and app launcher look and feel like KitKat. It's honestly very close to having KitKat itself.
Google Now is still very strong, even without the "always listening" from the home screen. My phone is rooted, but I have made no changes that would affect or enhance Google Now simply because I haven't felt the need. Mentioned above, disabling a bunch of crapware that Verizon puked onto this phone might have unforeseen performance benefits. Do your best.
Otherwise, I - like you - am eagerly awaiting KitKat to land on our phones. Having run CyanogenMod, XenonHD, BeanStalk, it's blatantly obvious that this phone is more than capable of handling KitKat without stutter. With Motorola opening their eyes about unlocked bootloaders, one can hope that after KitKat, custom ROMs will also be ported to the RAZR without all this stupid bootloader fuss.
Thank you for playing the waiting game with me.
Try out this launcher.
Be sure and choose "just once" when choosing it as home!!
A hit of home will allow the blur home back.
A safe boot will fix if you mess up, btw.
That is until you are sure it works.

I actually use Nova Prime. It has really given me some fresh air into my phone. I also love that they make your phone look closer to kit kat.
My main desire for a root is the chance to try out a kit kat ROM, due to the fact that it has such a low RAM requirement.

What he said. You're already in a spot where you cannot root.
You need root, but cannot root.
You need and unlocked bootloader to flash a rom, but you need to root first. Since you're on 9.30, you absolutely cannot root or unlock yet.

Try using Nova Launcher. Its pretty fast. Also try Power Widgets from play store.
If you like stock one then don't put too many icons and widgets on home screens. You can also try to disable animations in developers options.
If you are using Chrome turn the sync off. I find it to be more responsive that way. Google now can be slow because of search history. Try cleaning up a little bit. :good:
I disabled Google Now since I never need it and it smooths out the phone a bunch. Google Now bogs this phone down. Try it!

This looks promising! People within the thread are noting success. It's a bit iffy since there are no screenshots. but I don't have reason beyond that to doubt this too will work. No harm in trying I feel.
Up until now, I had simply been denying the "Update" popup until 4.4 came around. This sounds like a welcome fix!
I'll try and report results when I get off work later today.

I can't attest that it works because my phone is unlocked, so I don't have to resort to exploits, but I've ready numerous threads that state it works. It's using an exploit within the Linux Kernel.
Sorry folks, I've been running into a snag.
I tried to apply the 9.30 update, but it doesn't take. Preliminary Googling tells me that because I've already rooted the phone, I need to flash it back to complete stock through RSD Lite or something of the sort. The internet tells me that a simple factory reset doesn't do it.
So I either do flash it back to stock, or I wait (sigh) until 4.4 comes out for the razr hd.

You must use voodoo to unroot during the ota process. Then you will not need the new root exploit...
See my stickys for voodoo. You must get SS off your HD too.

Dashclock + Nova Launcher
Im pretty sure this is no exclusive to the Moto G, but here's the deal...
Ive just started to use launchers, Nova especially because it feels like stock android + added funcionality... all good, the problem is that i want to use Dashclock widget with it, but everytime open an extension and press the back button it goes back to the stock launcher and i have to launch Nova all over again, as of now this is the only widget that brings me problem with it and while its not the end of the worlds its really annoying
Am i the only one with this problem ? Is there a way to fix it ?
thank you
I remember there being an apk. For the Samsung Galaxy S3 which if installed could give the user root access, I never really seen it again after that certainly not for my HTC One.
Not everyone owns a PC /Laptop so something like this is handy and you don't have to go to the hassle of rooting, unlocking the bootloader is simple enough but having read a bit on there rooting doesn't appear to be as easy, I'm due my Moto G this week and will be using it as a second phone so not in an immediate rush to root but still would like to do so with the minimum of fuss.
So my question is, would there be such an apk. For the Moto G?

Not yet. I am not sure that it will be possible. Samsung devices don't have bootloader the you have to unlock to root. You have to unlock your booloader to get root, and to do that you need to get codes from Motorola. And to do that you need a computer.

[Q] That damn alt+backspace!

Does anyone how to disable the alt+backspace "shortcut" that deletes the current line?
I really hate it, and searching around the internets there have been complaints about it since the first Android phone!
I've tried remapping del with a custom keymap, but no luck.
Does any developer out there has a clue where this is in the source? I don't mind commenting out the feature and recompiling my own rom, but I haven't been able to find where it is myself.

I have no idea how to assist with this, but I do find that function very annoying myself! I can't tell you the amount of times I've had it delete lines of texts before I even noticed it. If you figure this out, I'd love to test it out.
count me in too. i would not miss this function at all. if i want to delete a block of text, i know how to use shift + arrow keys.
at the very least, is there an UNDO function anywhere for when you do accidentally delete lines of text because of this stupid design flaw?

Haven't been able to find any undo or workaround. And google probably doesn't care because no-one there knows what an android phone with a keyboard is --- all the ones they got are in historical glass cases :|

Tab 3 8 Kit Kat. What's new?

I just got the kit kat update for Tab 3 8. I live in LA California. Wifi only and I had to force it using the check for updates option. So I can list a few differences I'm noticing. I'm pretty sure all this stuff is new but some of it might be stuff I missed with 4.2.2.
Transparent notification bar.
New multiwindow experience. Now it does not have that little tab hanging over the side. Now you swipe it in from the side. I haven't played with it, I still find it unusable.
You can customise the toggle ribbon more now. You still have to have tons of icons but you can pick the order and take a few out.
The lock screen has a now playing type widget that looks nice.
On-screen keyboard toogle for bluetooth keyboards. I actually am trying to write a screenplay on this tablet and I had to buy a stupid app to fix the stupid keyboard the stupid way it worked be stupid fore and now it works better and I bought a stupid app for stupid nothing. But I'm glad it works better now.
That's all I've noticed so far. I also don't use touchwiz, I use nova.
Tell me what you guys are noticing or if you find an official list of changes let me know. Thanks everybody
- Matt
Jacksonville, FL here and no update available yet.
Cosmetically it's hard to notice the difference on the firmware, but under the hood there are some serious changes to the firmware, but all for the better.
The "Transparent Notification bar" was there on JB 4.2.2,
And "Multiple windows" is very functional now.
● TouchWiz is lighter and smooth now...
(I'm so happy with it's performance now, to the point I didn't bothered to install the Google Now Launcher yet...)
● Third-party apps can't write to External SD card anymore...
(There is a way if you root the device)
● Some extra new Wi-Fi settings.
● The keyboard is improved and the "Picture gallery" and other factory apps also received some TLC for the better.
But for me, the "Multiple User capability" is definitely th e Icing on the cake.

[emoji25] One year old device and already considered 2nd class and outdated by the manufacturer...
This is likely the first and the last update this device will see from Samsung.
I like Samsung devices, but I finally lost interest in buying any Samsung devices in the future.

auto brightness sucks.
I was hoping the autobrightness would get fixed. For me it's always way too dim. Where is the light sensor?

- Matt

Autobrightness is horrible on the Tab3, it's fine on my S5 as well as previous S2 and other Android devices I've used. But the Tab3 Sucks, I'm always taking it off auto especially durring the day, dim as hell lol
