[Bug] Why doesn't Mx Player, display that a video has a subtle file in its folder? - MX Player

It used to display fine in earlier versions.But now it doesn't.
For example (please observe the screenshot), that movie's got a subtitle placed in it's folder. Earlier versions of mx player used to show an indication, on the right hand low corner of name.
But now it's just blank.

Interesting, I don't have a problem with missing external subtitle indicators on my Nexus 5 Android 4.4.4. What device and Android version?

Would you post screen capture of a file manager screen showing entire files in this directory?

Here it is. Aside from the video file, the other one is the subtitle.
Mx Player Pro, recognizes embedded subtitles with no problem. But doesn't provide indication for external ones.

Can you check whether the file name of the video & subtitle is exactly same except extension?
What's the extension of your subtitle?
In your screenshot, file name is not completely visible since you are using tiles/icon view.

No, the file names of the video & Subtitle are different.
The subtitle extention is .srt
Here's is the detailed view of that screenshot

If I am not wrong mx player looks for the subtitle with the same name as video.
Try to rename it to the same name & check it again.

Yep, renaming solves the problem.
But that's not, at all, ok I guess. Mx Player should be able to detect a subtitle, no matter what the name. This feels kinda stupid, to only show those having same names.

Reason for this is because it's also possible to have multiple videos with similar filenames, for example if you have recordings of lectures. Exact filename matching exists for cases such as that.

[Guide] How to watch DVD's on your Android with subtitles.

Yo guys, I've recently found a nice way to watch movies on Android, in HD, with subtitles, completly free, so i'm making a tutorial.
If anyone likes it, please click the "thank" button, and if enough request, i could make a youtube video about it.
Nuff' said, let's get to it!
STEP 1: What do i need?
Recruitments:
-An Android phone which can handle 720P movies.
Handbrake, a DVD ripper which can be found here:
http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php
-A usb data cable.
-Enough memory on your phone, around 500MB-1000MB per movie.
-mVideoPlayer which can be found on Android Market for free.
STEP 2: Rip your DVD!
Open up HandBrake, and click on the arrow, next to "source"
Choose your DVD and let it load.
Handbrake already have MP4 as standard format, which we are going to use so choose your destinations folder, and pick a simple name without spaces.
Now start the process and let it load, this might take a while.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
STEP 3: What about subtitles?
Now, if you need subtitles for your movie, it's no problem!
Just grab your subtitles from a site like http://www.opensubtitles.org
And place them in the same folder as your MP4, with the exact same name as the MP4 you just created.
STEP 4: Placing it on your phone!
First of all, plug in your phone to your computer, and go to the root of the SD card. Find or create a folder called "video" place both MP4 and the subtitles in that folder.
When it's done, unplug the USB.
STEP 5: Playing it on your phone!
Goto mVideoPlayer which you downloaded from the market, and click on the refresh button on the top of the app!
Your movie should then show up, with "subtitles: yes" If it does, try to play it and see how it goes!
If it works, yay! enjoy a movie on your phone!
-------------------
-If you have any trouble read this:
I do not see the movie in the app!
Click on "refresh" button at the top!
There is no subtitles!
Make sure the subtitles and the movie has the same name!
My video is green, and blurry and extreamly laggy:
Well, i ripped around 10 dvd's and 2 of them had this problem, i goggled it and i read it was some copy protection, i'm not sure exactly what it is, but if you know it please tell me.
My ripping didn't worked!
Well, not all videos can be ripped using this method, try another DVD, if that works' you got the problem.
Well, if you have any other questions, just shoot! i will reply happily!
Is there anything i should change, or add in the guide?
Not all DVDs can be ripped using this method. (Different/better copy protection).
You might want to add that into your main post.

This guide worked for me. handbrake works fine. However the step to change resolution did not work for me. Might have been the resolution of the avi not being able to change but the movie converted and played fine on the phone.
Excellent! thanks for posting this

I personally prefer "AnyDVD". It removes all copy protection as soon as you put the DVD in. Works beautifully.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
yeah. It's working fine here. But the problem with my video is that the subtitle freezes all the way until the next script. Kinda annoying. I'm using Samsung Video app.
Does this work for other type of movie? (.avi, .mov...)
When you rip a DVD with Handbrake you also have the possibility to add the subtitles directly from the DVD. Is there any player for Android that can deal with that? It's no problem on Mac or PC (VLC or Quicktime f. e.).
Any ideas?
I can finally watch my translated movies...

[Bug Report] H/W+ auto-switching to S/W

Lately I've run into an issue; can't point my finger on which update this started happening though.
Many videos start to play as H/W+ but then stop and decoder turns to S/W 3 to 6 seconds into the video. What's weird is that it's intermittent, like, I can play that same file again and it'll stick on H/W+. Then I try again and it goes to S/W. Very sporadic.
It's a shame because playing videos on H/W+ consumes 8%/h~ of my battery, whereas S/W a good 15-16%.
Mind posting the media info for the video? And on what device and ROM is this? If you remember, what was the last version of MX that didn't have the issue?

are you using multiple multimedia apps at the same time?
mediaplayer has timed out. that's why it has automatically switched S/W.
anyhow I have forwarded the issue to the developer.

Erm, like another video player WHILE mx playing is on it? Not at all.
I mean I do have Shuttle music player on background, but it's not playing anything, and I don't think that's related since only certain videos reproduce this issue.

I thought of something, I'll try to explain:
In a folder there are the video files, and also the opening and ending titles as separate files. Like let's say a video is 20 mins, with 2 min opening and 2 min ending titles, for a total of 24 mins.
I only moved the actual video file on my tablet, so it's only playing the 20min file. Could it timeout trying to find the opening / ending files that I omitted?
edit: I'll try the same thing but also copying the other files now.
edit 2: nope, behaving the same way. Could it be mx player doesn't support "separated" video files? I mean, the video says it's 20 min long rather than 24min even if the other files are in there.
I'm not sure if I was clear enough so I'll try to rephrase. I'm playing the videos of an anime that made it so that rather than every episode containing the opening and ending, it calls them as external video file - i guess to save space. that doesnt seem to be supported by mx player.
last edit: yup, it only seems to happen on files that are "split" like I described - but still, not all of them.

Got it.
@bleu8888, I highly appreciate your support to search the subs that you've implemented. THANK YOU!
However, OpenSubtitles can solve most of the cases, but there's another reliable source: Subscene.(com)
Would it be much if I asked you to add that subtitle source for searches as well? Or, if that does not happen, do you intend to add other sources more than OS?
All of best.

[Q][Resolved] MKV ordered chapters

Will MX Player ever support the playback of video playlists?
For example, I have 20 episode files of a series which don't include the intro and outro, they are a single file which gets called as a chapter when playing an episode - I guess to save file size. VLC supports this, any chance MX will do too?

If I delete the OP or ED (intro and outro), the episodes (1 to 5) won't play the intro and outro.
Tsukimonogatari nyaa.se - This is the "playlist" in question.
What you are describing is ordered chapters. Ordered chapters link separate video files together, such as linking external OP/ED to the main video. Of the currently active main fansub groups, only Coalgirls still uses this... it's quite annoying. This issue has already been brought up here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/mx-player/watching-anime-t2847481
It is also already on the feature requests list, high priority #8.

It's not annoying, it's an excellent feature that more groups should make use of. And not just to cut OP/ED out of episodes to make files smaller, but so that you can quickly skip past/skip to OPs, EDs, previews, prologues, epilogues and "previously-ons" without having to metiouclsy scour the episode. I hope your personal feelings toward this amazing feature is not hindering its progress in MX player.
Priority list in this forum is useless because development shows that low priority list were implented first. Developer has his own priority list in note.

You can do the same with just regular MKV chapters; ordered chapters are not needed for this. Ordered chapters are an extended feature of the basic MKV chapter. If MX Player has support for regular chapters, you'll already be able to seek to chapter markers.

The high priority items are in fact being worked on, but as they are more complex items, he's not planning to release anytime soon. The lower priority items, as they are quick fixes, he just tackles in his spare time, and this is why they are released more sporadically and frequently.

Oh, okay. Well, MX Player definitely doesn't have regular chapter support then either.
Indeed, it does not; currently MX Player has zero support for any of the MKV chapter specification.

Goto Settings > Subtitles > text & disable "ignore fonts specified in ssa". It should work now.
Infact It's disabled by default. You might have enabled it.
It look like the rendering is rotated when MX Player uses other fonts instead of the one from ssa. We will improve it in future.

Yes, I enabled it. Because if not, it takes a long time to cache the font.
P.s. The SSA is just a few KBs large, I don't think it can contain a CJK font in it. So where do Mx Player cache the font? Mx Player never successfully to play a video with CJK SSA subtitle on my device if I don't enable that option, it just keep caching the font for a long time (Once I waited 30~40 minutes, but it still keeps caching. Is it really caching the font?)

It may happen due to font cache corruption or invalid/broken font.
Even if you select "Ignore fonts mentioned in SSA", MX Player will still cache the fonts.
goto settings » general & clear the font cache if the problem persists.
