LuneOS aka WebOS port - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Devs,
Can someone port LuneOS to our device or look into the possibility pretty please.

they had, and still have the best multitasking on a mobile device i've ever used. it was just so fluid and intuitive. some of their features they incorporated are still ahead of their time today

i guess there exists a port for oneplus but it is not available for everyone to test at this point now, that is why i was asking the xda land devs to look into it. I have heard a few good things about this OS so i am a little bit excited.

promise ...

Check android dev section, I am working on it

Any update with the port ?

Thought I would bring this into here so that we can keep an eye on it and see if it comes to our transformer..
I for one would LOVE to have this going..
From what I am reading, its not going to be an app.. but part of the Android Roms that OEM's are able to put out on thier pads..
I suggest that if you like the look of it.. buzz them like i have and keep the transformer at the forfront of thier list of devices that they should be adding this too..
Thanks for reaching out. We are big fans of the custom rom communities and some of the features and improvements they have added to the core of Android. Currently we are working with several OEMs to include Cornerstone in upcoming devices. We are also considering a beta program in advance of the product being released commercially. This is not a finalized program at this point, but something being considered. To get signed up for this please sign up via our Facebook Page. That is also where the latest status updates get announced first.
Thanks!

I asked to the developers if it's possible to get a preview to implement it to Revolver ROM. But I don't think it's possible =|
They will probably charge an arm and a leg to the OEMs to incorporate the multiwindow UI...

if they have cracked the programing with something that is going to blow us away..
then I sure they are going to be be milking this for all they can get..
its been a hell of a online marketing push so far..
we have yet to see it working in real world..
and as they had it going before ICS then I am a little supprised
they havent got a major taking it on and pushing it for the xmas shopping..
This is the type of thing that will make any NAMED pad different then ALL the others in a flash..
even the ipad users havent got this as yet..
so if they are sitting on the holy grail of programming. they better get your arse out there on product

This is where the ability of Android apps to scale to any screen size comes handy. I hope Google will implement something like than in next Android. For tablets it would be really usefull.
Actually..wouldn't that be the theory. If say a app works to a smaller screen.. then couldn't you run that app with it to be limited to that screen size.. thus you could then effectively run say, a MSN box and a Google translate..the key would be to limiting them to open to a certain size..and not go whole screen..
Linux inheritantly runs multi windows..Android is a based on similar coding..so really I can't see why this feature has taken so long to impliment.

You're talking about the X Windows System (which GNU/Linux, Solaris, *BSD, etc usually use), not Linux the kernel (which Android uses). You can even us X on Microsoft Windows operating systems, but it's not the native technology there anymore than it is on Android.
Android does it's own thing. As far as what multi-anything we get from Linux, we get the technology that makes sandboxing apps with a publicly shared directory work. We don't have X natively built into Android. If we did you wouldn't even need "Android" apps.

I am sure the hats @Google have this as a target as it was only a matter of time before it was demanded as a norm..
Point being.. these guys are close and I hope Asus is one of the few that have tipped some money into the bucket so that they in front of the pack..

Personally i like Webos. But about 70% of others don't. most likely because of it's lack of customization and apps. It would be nice to see the dying OS ported to other devices to give it new life, but don't get your hopes up.
The devs simply don't seem to be too interested in porting Webos to other devices.

I know it is sad for lack of support but Webos fans will support this. A person on one of the Webos forums is trying to wire the HTC Shift to work with the touchpad's charging dock, so there is still hope!
WebOS isn't open source yet, that's why nobody is porting it. -_-
It's not open source YET, but in a few month it will be and I'm hopeful that some devs will port it on other devices then.
The are two things I'm a bit worried about is webOS for other phones. Since I read a blog post which was all about the open source plan of HP I afraid that only the Touchpads 3.x webOS will be open sourced.
The other thing is the maybe missing feature of using gestures on phones. I mean webOS is all about gestures and I love to use my Pre3 with these gestures and the special gesture area, cause it's easy to use and superfast. But when ported on a phone, let's say a Galaxy S2, will there be gestures or does the user have to use the stupid buttons?

My vote is to port it to a device with a massive user base, such as my SGS2, or an HD2. I still play with my Pre- and it sits on my coffee table. After reading The Verge post mortem I understand why it died, but it still is the best UX hands down. Imagine it running on blazing fast hardware, but I wonder how much is lost without a keyboard?
It seems that everyone has move on from webOS within the android community (well, almost everyone). I am one of the die hard fans of the OS and continue to use it daily. Of course, my needs for an OS are different from many , and I come from a solid Linux/Unix background. I have used palm products for years and followed webOS from the beginning. There are times when I come off like a fanboi for webOS but it has seemed to be an elegant solution for true multi tasking from the beginning. I hear most folks here talking of the untimely demise of webOS and cannot help but wonder if they have decided not to follow the development of Open WebOS. The community edition of webOS is due out in Sept and there are a number of major improvements coming with it. There is also the Phoenix project which may be building another tablet running the open source WebOS.
For those who have moved on from webOS and are satisfied with android, I bid you fair well. I will continue to work within the webOS community and look forward to future development. For those who are still on the fence, I would suggest a bit of patience as there are good things in the future of webOS and this fall really isn't that far off. Whichever OS you choose, remember that the touch pad that you have is still one of the few dual boot tablets on the market and (for those who were not early adopters) was purchased for a reduced price that would be hard to match by any other tablet manufacturer. The hardware is still pretty good compaired to most all dual core tablets and is still able to run cutting edge android builds. This alone would be a good argument for sticking with the touch pad but I stick with it for the things it continues to do well within webOS.

I remember when I had my pre you could place your phone in dev mode (root) by a simple dialer code reboot and itd be unlocked then you can install preware and from there install anything you want. I remember patches that added lots more functionality to the OS. Much simpler than android

I'll buy the lack of apps argument, but customization? Kiddin' me? Installing Preware couldn't be any easier if they tried. Only Windows Mobile was easier than webOS.
I would defiantly try it on my skyrocket.

Ideally webOS that could run Android apps would be great. The UX on webOS is second only to Windows Phone IMO, but webOS needs the app power of Android.
I had a Pre+ for a weekend but after the third time swapping it out because of hardware problems, I gave up on it. The hardware was always the problem. They should have had HTC manufacture it like the Treos.

Open WebOS is as open as is Android: the kernel and drivers must be supplied by the manufacturer or developer, and certain apps like 'phone', 'sms', 'mms'... are not part of the open distribution.
Think that Open WebOS must be ported to EXISTING WebOS devices...

Interesting, would be great on the ChaCha/Status because it is a very smooth OS and will work great with the keyboard.
I totally would enjoy to see this on the Chacha. Since WebOS ran on keyboard devices I hope that it will have better keyboard support than android.
I also noticed that someone was able to port WebOS to some other HTC Android device and used the drivers from Android. However, problem will be the drivers of course. :-/

The idea of the keyboard is what I was thinking. It would be a very similar experience on the chacha/status. Plus it is very fast.
it would be interesting to see a port of a totally different OS to the phone.
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/b2g/
for example.
but the amount of work it would entail would require a lot of very skilled developers, and a ton of research on the phone hardware as well as current available software.
I doubt it will ever happen - but it would be nice to see.
Honestly, at this point, I really wish that people would get together and make a CM10 port for the ChaCha/Status. I think it will improve performance and battery life even more than the current unofficial port of CM9.

CM10 should be out in the next couple of months. The problem is there are like 2 real good developers for the htc chacha/status and they have lives to live. So they don't constantly work on this stuff. Which sucks. this is a great phone and we need more devs

This phone, with a dual core 1ghz processor same ram but 1gb would be nice and maybe just a little better screen. But just a dual core 1ghz processor and this becomes the best android phone in my opinion. I also have an atrix 4g but for most things I prefer this phone.
Unfortunately HTC said that it will discontinue to make phones with hardware keyboards...
However, I think the people that work on porting things to the HTC Chacha are limited. We could try to support them with some donations. But even if someone is willing to work on the port for some small amount of money we don't have any guarantee if the result of WebOS for the Chacha will be what we expect since it will depend on the drivers.
Also when they port CM10 to the chacha I really would like to see someone improving the keyboard support especially for the call functions. I gut 2 calls at the same time today and you can't even use the green phone key to switch between the calls since it just will open a new dialer insted of checking what is going on in the moment.
Would be nice of one of the developers to comment this here.
I will look into WebOS once someone else ports it to a ARMV6 phone. As the current phone which has WebOS so far is Galaxy Nexus, even the port for the Nexus isn't that great at the moment.
As for all the dev work, I think what we have at the moment is great for a lowend phone as we have CM7, CM9 and CM10 soon. Plus I'm going to start finishing some ROMs which I started couple of months ago. Donate to Adlx as he's keeping the dev work going on in his free time when he has Family also.

Community development strength

You're a power user. Can the OnePlus 2 keep up? Rate this thread to express how "healthy" the development scene is for the OnePlus 2. A higher rating indicates available root methods, kernels, and custom ROMs.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I think the oneplus2 wont get the development as opo got. Most of the developers are selling their phones(eg. ak). Its really sad as I bought this phone expecting a healthy development community. And the worst part is , I have to use this phone for at least 2 years now
I miss OPO dev community
No official CM, no OxygenOS sources...
I'm quite disappointed to be honest. Coming from a Nexus 5 i was expecting to have Marshmallow by now.. No custom roms really that are worth installing. Also saw on oneplus forums that ~30 developers were going to develop for this phone. Where are they...

Same here, coming from a Nexus 4 :/
Coming from a Nexus 4 I'm somewhat disappointed as well but it's not that bad, CM is really stable and faster than Oxygen, maybe things will get better after official Marshmallow update
Its just a shame. The community they have over with the OPO is great. But here not so much. Hopefully they'll release the source code for the laser and fingerprint scanner. I'm not that hopeful though. I have my nexus 5 for 2 years. The longest I've kept a phone for and that was because of the development community
I just want to see MultiROM and Ubuntu for smartphones on OPT, but until now my OPT is fully stock..
I wouldn't even care if I stayed with stock as long as i had marsallow and the updates were fast. Oxygen is almost completely stock..
I still dont understand why they havent release the source code for this phone...
Oxygen, although is good, is lack a kicking ass power that can be brought by other custom rom and kernel... ::sigh
I really expect this development community will be as big as OPO... C'monn oneplus, be more reasonable, and dont overrate ypurself too much. You are just a little company without community support. Its the community that make OPO one of the best phone ever after all
I'd like to see what other people think about this. I can't really make or break a device
What are you guys saying? The community development is healthy. OnePlus did say they will release the source code for the finger print scanner when marshmallow is released. Releasing it right now for the Lollipop version would only be short lived since marshmallow will come out
This is such a pointless thread. The reason development is almost non-existent is due to the drivers for the fingerprint sensor and laser auto focus not being made publicly available. Once those are available with the Marshmallow update, then the development for this phone will take off. Its a matter of patience.
Development is going good. To justify the absence of the fingerprint scanner and laser autofocus codes as lack of development is inaccurate lol
ONeplus did say that the reason the codes for the fingerprint scanner were not released because the device is about to get the Marshmallow update. THey will begin to release it upon update. Patience my comrades
ak is selling his OPT? Whaaaaat?
I really wanted Oneplus 2 to be the Nexus killer.. but it seems that will never be true.

OP2 will never be a nexus killer. Its not a 2016 Flagship killer as they marketed it, hell its not even a 2015 flagship killer. But Its a one hell of a device. Great looks, good performance, its a decent little package. Only thing that's missing now is the community support. I know it still sucks that there isn't a CM13 rom yet. I have high hopes that this is gonna change with the official Android M update. The complete source will be available soon. Since the OP2 is available now without invite I guess more devs will get their hands on the device.
Stay positive guys. Cheers.

i do agree with you both to some extent BUT i do think that OnePlus really dropped the ball. people don't want to wait 6-8 months for custom roms and in the time it takes OnePlus to release its code and for development to pick up, a lot of new devices came or will come to market (Moto X, Nexus etc..). the reason the OPO was so great is that it had good hardware and development was strong so it gave you options. the OPT also has great hardware but a lot of people myself included find Oxygen OS to be sub par and without any other option (i don't consider flashing a different rom and losing critical features a viable option), the phone becomes a lot less attractive.
considering the fact that OnePlus said that M will be coming in Q1 (i think that we can safetly assume end of march), waiting another 4 months seems a bit too much.

i do agree with you both to some extent BUT i do think that OnePlus really dropped the ball. people don't want to wait 6-8 months for custom roms and in the time it takes OnePlus to release its code and for development to pick up, a lot of new devices came or will come to market (Moto X, Nexus etc..). the reason the OPO was so great is that it had good hardware and development was strong so it gave you options. the OPT also has great hardware but a lot of people myself included find Oxygen OS to be sub par and without any other option (i don't consider flashing a different rom and losing critical features a viable option), the phone becomes a lot less attractive.

i hope that you are right, i HATE Oxygen OS.

Why there are no custom projects for our device?

Although the kernel source is available, there aren't any projects, custom roms/kernels, no miui modifications and barely working custom recovery.. I get it the device is new but so are other devices that have so much projects... But why is our device so empty? I bet it has a huge potential for custom teams..
Xiaomi isn't interested in actively supporting independent ROM development for their devices. The reason there is a lot of development for One Plus phones is that One Plus sends free phones to developers. Xiaomi does not do that and wants its customers to use the stock ROM. Official LOS is supposedly in development for the Mix 2S but if you need custom ROMs you bought the wrong phone. In the future you should probably see what the development thread looks like before buying.
What about other Xiaomi devices? They have custom support.
Well the custom recovery is actually working pretty good. You can use the treble roms, rr is daily driver ready... Currently there are people working on aosp for our device, when we have a working aosp other roms will follow based on it
If you look into how many devices were sold, you'll figure out why so little development.

I can see that, but it's definitely surprising how few official developer ROMs (zero) have been released since this phone has been in existence. I know it's been stated that developers are working on it, but I haven't seen anything.
The camera is the constraining factor. No point having a good custom ROM if there is no GCam or MIUI camera port because you could have got a much cheaper phone if you don't care about camera.
I really regret buying this buggy device. Last time I buy something that doesn't run stock Android out of the box.

So you say people buy this phone only because of the good camera?
What cheaper phone could you get with the same performance as 845?
MIUI port already exist, yes for other devices, but it can be made for 2S with a finger snap. Devs just don't have interest in this device, sadly..

I do not care about processor. I just wanted full-screen with no notch and a good camera.
