What are the odds we get a 6.0 ROM soon?

Since it's being released in a couple days, is it possible we will get the source code to build for OnePlus?

From the official sources, no clue. From ROM devs, I'd say give it a month once source code drops. Cyanogenmod already built for this device, I mean look at the back of the phone, so I'm sure they will support us for at least 2 more android versions. My very first android phone the Droid Incredible came out in 2010 and for rom support from devs all the way up to 4.4.4, so I'd say pretty dang high from rom devs. Helps also that we have a simple bootloader unlock, which makes devs even more inclined to work on the device. Based on my past device experience, we'll get at least 3 more major versions, 6.0 included, maybe more. By then, your battery will be useless, and you'll have moved on, which is awesome.

CM are only obligated to support this device until April next year, so Marshmallow will be the last official version we get. They're contracted for 24 months from the time of release and they'll drop this device like a hot potato the first chance they get.

While I'd like to agree with you, that's in regards to business, we will see 6.0 for that reason alone. I was more referring to the fact that we still see updates on the nexus 4 up to 5.1 and the fact that open popular devices seem to get much longer support. Wasn't trying to disagree with you at all in that respect. I'm not that likes to hang onto their old devices, or sell them to friends, so I have seen how amazing that support can be even for older devices. My TF101 tablet is still rocking, and running 5.1.1 it's smoother than it's ever been. Don't think that'll see 6.0, but I didn't expect it to make it to 5.0. It all comes down to "We'll see how long it gets supported, but don't demand anything past 6.0" even though historically, we should get 3 more major versions if it follows most devices paths when it comes to rom support. That boing said, I'll be flashing 6.0 as soon as we get a rom that can multiboot!

There's no doubt we'll see the next version after Marshmallow on this phone, but I can guarantee you it won't be in the form of official updates via Cyanogen Inc, it'll be in the form of community developed ROMs via CyanogenMod. If you meant CyanogenMod and not Cyanogen Inc then I misunderstood you.

Rom developers are really fast, i would say 1 week after we get the source there will be a alpha version. Cyanogen13 will take at least months.

Sounds good to me! We have great devs here! Hopefully they don't leave for the Nexus phones, they really aren't worth the $ in my opinion. 808 and 810 have too many problems. I got the Moto X Pure and had that for 2 weeks and even the 808 had terrible heating issues. This years chipsets by Qualcomm are just terrible. Not to mention even now, 3 weeks in they have no dev support and Motorola (now Lenovo) is very shady company.

Motorola says they aren't going to update the Moto E although they advertised that they would. Also not updating Moto X 2014 AT&T and Verizon version.

Moto E: cheap budget phone that I think people only bought as a placeholder when they broke a phone or something else happened, it's not a flagship. nobody bought it to use for 2+ years and I don't think it was intended as such.
Moto x: did you see that the pure is getting updated? That means it was the carriers decision, not Motorola's. Also, it's easy to convert the att/Verizon version to the pure version and then you'll get the update fine.

As soon as Lenovo brought out Pure they let go about 500 Motorola employees, many who were in the dev department... They are giving people hard times about returns saying it will take 6-8 weeks to get their money back on an overnight return label. The pure QC is piss poor, if you go to their forums, their most popular thread is about returning the phone... This clearly isn't the same Motorola we used to love. I'm not big on OnePlus either, I only came back here, because at least I know my OnePlus works, I'll never buy from them again though, that's for sure.

Honor 8 a viable choice in 2017?

Hello.
I'm looking for a new phone, my budget is around 340 USD and therefore Honor 8 has really caught my eye. I'd like to ask a couple questions.
1. Is the bootloader unlock process problematic? Have you faced any issues with it or is it hassle-free? Coming from an LG device, I want to be extra careful with this.
2. I plan to have this device for a longer period of time, around 3-4 years. Is Honor 8 a viable choice, despite the fact that it will soon be a year from the release? Will it be able to hold off for that long, in terms of ROM support and general performance/usage?
3. How do custom ROM development prospects look right now for the device? From what I've seen, Huawei still hasn't released sources for Nougat. Can I expect good custom ROM support from this device?
4. How satisfied are you with your phone? Would you recommend it to me? Are there anything you don't like about the phone?

I had iphone7 , Huawei P9, Galaxy s7 and since 2 month : Honor 8
Yes for me you can buy this phone in 2017
It's a very good phone , very fluid, no lags, the phone is not too big , not to small, you can use with one hand . Screen is good , photo too but not like Iphone7 or Galaxy S7 . I am very happy with quick charge . For me the phone is more faster than an Iphone7, or Galaxy S7 . You can personalize like you want , You have a lot of nice themes on XDA or Google+ Emui Community . Sound is good, with headset is not like an Iphone or Galaxy s7 but to listen music is suffisant for me . Voilà, my advice is very good phone, just photo and music with headset can be better but stay ok for daily use .

The device is solid. Runs fast, pretty good specs, and looks nice.
Expect zero updates. Zero custom ROM support, and even rooting is a pain in the butt.
If you're into it for the dev scene, move on. If you want a half decent device for daily use, not bad at all.
Personally I regret buying it because Huawei is terrible at updates and keeping promises.
But as a daily driver device, it's fine.

Don't buy it's an alright phone but no custom ROM support is like a death sentence for a phone. This phone has been out for like 9 months and doesn't have a fully working custom ROM, that right there tells you that this phone has no future. Also who keeps wants to keep a low to mid range phone for 3-4 years? Must be in a 3rd world country!

I am happy with the phone but I'm disappointed with Huawei/Honor when it comes to updates and I am not going to buy more phones from them.
I would get something else right now, it was a good choice when it was released
Next time I will just pay 200 extra euro and get a real phone

Huawei offer 2 years of updates, but not monthly updates. Taking a look at honor 6 released in august 2014 - it is indeed so. Latest update for honor 6 is september 30th 2016.

I'm pretty satisfied. I enjoy it's dimensions, design, performance and battery life. Games aside, it's faster than any SD820 phone and most SD821 phones (take a look at performance comparison videos on youtube), so it's definitely going to be quick enough for 3-4 years.
If no custom ROM support, lower than SD820 GPU performance and only 2 years of official updates are OK for you (as it is for me) - I definitely recommend it.

You can easily get a code from Huawei to unlock the bootloader, but there's not much point to rooting the phone with development on it pretty nonexistent.
The hardware is really nice. The phone's a great size, the CPU is a beast, the GPU kind of sucks (but that doesn't matter if you're not playing new/demanding games on it like me), but the security updates are TERRIBLE. The most recent software update for the US version of the phone came out in the beginning of January. So we're almost four months into the year and the December 1st security patch is the most recent one available.
If you'd be happy with Nougat 7.0/EMUI 5.0 in a year from now and don't do anything that having security up to date matters it's fine, but otherwise I'd look elsewhere.

I'm starting to hate Xiaomi

First of all, they rushed the Oreo update with tons of severe bugs and the beta testing was open to a number of complete random Joes most of whom could never do their job properly.
Secondly, they now cancelled the second Oreo update without any announcements.
Thirdly, there's zero communication with/from them - there no official Xiaomi employees/representatives either on miui or xda-dev forums, they never reply to your questions in Twitter.
This was supposed to be an exploratory OEM device running Android One - instead we've got a big f***ing mess.
To add insult to injury there are no kernel sources four months after the device release. EIS/Camera2API are still not enabled in any builds. Low light camera performance is simply horrible. There's white noise for headphones which most likely will never be solved since this phone has a broken amplifier which should have never passed QA/QC.
I'm never buying anything again from this company.
And it's not like Nougat releases were bugs free - there were at least a dozen of serious bugs. And Android System/OS power use is still enormous. Seems like Xiaomi simply doesn't care.

I think that you are not correct. Phone is just amazing for that price range.

Im on January update now rooted, with framework reset and don't have one bug.
For camera they should make better software. Because Gcam can make excellent photos compared to stock. But never the less phone is just great.

Looks like you don't use this smartphone at all or use it for a handful of functions because it has tons of bugs. I'm glad you like it though.

What you've pointed out is very true. I also think a lot of randos are in the beta program, but then again the beta program is entirely USELESS if there is no communication with the dev team. The individual devs too can't do anything until the source arrives, which Xiaomi claims is taking time "to make it better" which can be read as "our kernel is still not good enough" I'm not surprised that the ROMs are buggy. There is huge potential for Mi A1, but software and Xiaomi cripples it.
After source kernel is released though, I expect it to have the best and most optimal software. Until then it's just a waiting game.

I think you miss the point that you bought a cheap 200 bucks device. Tons of bugs ??? Not really. Oreo is ok, if you can help yourself a little bit. Other expensive brands have update and even hardware issues too. Just sit back and chill. The perfect device and perfect support ? Have fun to wait for it

No kernel sources..we just lost the lineage OS devices as he lost his phone ???

There are some setbacks but come on every OEM is doing the same thing with their customers, you can't specifically say about a1. Btw the kernel sources still not released is a big blunder committed by Xiaomi.

I do recall the noise on social media and forums demanding the update before Jan. 1. I think Xiaomi have learned a lesson and decided to say less to temper expectations. The complaints do suggest that the update was not ready, and they should have just let folks harass them on social media and various sites and ignored them until it was ready.

It was a small company that became larger than old Not Chinese companies, they sell good stuff, their QC is better than in other companies.
A1 is first not MUI phone. It takes time to things well. I use android O and have no problems at all.
About a camera, you can't get Leica or Samsung camera for 150$!!!
Want a good camera? Buy Huawei, Samsung, iPhone... Pay 700$ and don't write things you don't understand...
BTW, if you won't buy xiaomi stuff, xiaomi won't beg you to do it!

The point isn't that the device is bad, the problem is that i could be far better than how currently is.
The camera isn't great at all, but it could be better by simply activating api2 in build.prop, how much does it cost to xiaomi? Maybe it don't give a f**k about this device.
Bugs, they could be less, of course with kernel sources there will be even Ron development.
The dac is absolute s**t, i can't understand all the reviewer that said it was stunning, the hissing sound isn't a minor issue

For my needs this phone is perfect. Yes, perfect, so I bought 3 of them for me/wife/daughter.
I was happy with Nougat and now I'm happy with Oreo Jan patch.
For now I just wait for sources and custom ROM avalanche to squeeze every bit of software from this hardware.
Bottom line, as usual YMMV.

The only thing that I hate Xiaomi for is that the Mi A1 xda forum is full of idiots reposting and spamming, instead of developers showing their amazing work which could be done with the kernel sources out.

Hating Xiaomi have become mainstream here, you cannot say you love this phone anymore. How many thread do we need for hating Xiaomi and bugs discussion.
I have to say that my Oreo doesnt have major bugs, only minor bugs, i still can wait for the fix. Battery life incredibly better than nougat, it stay more than 24 hours for me.
If you have major bugs like wifi or call problem, just bring it to service centre, I'm sure they can help. Or you can use Nougat while waiting for stable Oreo (UI is quite the same). MiFlash tools is very easy to use too. (I think you need to backup your data if you want to downgrade because of difference encryption)
I think because of this phone so easy to unlock/relock bootloader (without wiping data) plus with magisk undetectable root, its impossible to tell which bugs (in xda & MIUI forum) came from root or unroot device. I'm not saying all the bugs came from root device, but it make it worse. Maybe that cause Xiaomi panic and pull back update, just maybe.
I didnt see when someone post a bug and the first question is "did you unlock bootloader?" every bugs post usually follow with hating this phone. All I want to see is workaround for the bugs while waiting it to be fix.
I hold my update for 2 week because of all these bugs post, but after I update my phone, its not that bad. Those thread are not reliable anymore. Why?

See? This why people who has working phone remain silent. you cannot share something good about this phone. In the end all these threads become less and less informative. Anyway, if you think there is no hope, why you still here?

If You buy a phone for $150-$200 You really can't be that stupid/naive that You expect same build quality, same camera, same support, same update interval, same bug fix speed, etc as a $600-$900 phone??
Software development is expensive and cheap phones doesn't pay big dev teams!
This phone is my sixth "cheap China phone" and second Xiaomi and I can promise that the updates are miles better than from many others in same price range!
I don't have any major "bugs" or bigger annoyances in my phone (currently running Oreo Dec 1 2017) and it works great as my daily driver.
The small issues are there yes, but please show me a phone in same price range that's free from bugs.
So from my point of viev: A1 is good phone for that price!

I owned a Oneplus One years ago and I gave up waiting for an upgrade and bought something else.
I here that OnePlus is better at upgrading today than they were four years ago. Is this true ?
Like I said I read and I know OnePlus 6 has available an Oxygen Beta (Android Pie) but it has not been officially released ? Is true if I buy a device I may need to wait several months until they Officially release Android Pie.
Now I know you will say just run the Beta it is stable but here is the make of break question I need Android Pay and Wear OS. My experience tells me if I flash a Beta required apps like Android Pay and Wear OS may stop working.
If I buy today I think the safe thing will be to wait for Oxygen OS (Android Pie) to be released. Customer ROMs or Beta OS will break for sure Android Pay.
Other than hating to wait for official releases this device looks fine.
No wireless charging sucks but I can live without it.
The Pixel camera maybe better but I read the OnePlus 6 camera is not bad
The OnePlus 6T will be out in November but ..... THERE IS ALWAYS A NEW DEVICE around the corner. Wait for the OnePlus 6T..... oh but it a few months this will be released.

Android pay is not working in Beta, you should read the OP forum in the beta thread to see all the things being said.
The 6T rumor is that it will come with Pie installed but since it isn't out yet nobody knows if it will really be installed out from the gate.
Personally, I think Oxygen OS is a mess and from what I see on the threads for Pie, they're just patching it yet again and putting a new UI on it over starting from scratch. All they keep doing is carrying over bugs from previous versions and then trying to re-patch them again for either the new device model and/or new Android system. Considering treble is now installed on both the 5 and 6, IMO they should have started fresh and should have been working on coding an entirely new OS 2 years ago.
If I were you, I would wait until Pie is released in the fall and see how it goes and what the complaints are before buying anything.

Official Pie has been released, you can already download the firmware and flash it.
As for updates and kernel source upload speed, the OP6 gets both the fastest among all devices I had.
As for taking pics, use the gcam port for great picture quality and the oos cam for [email protected] recording.

The Official build for Android pie has been released today which is nice as it took only about 1.5 months after Google released it themselves.

Thanks I jumped on a sale, and ordered one.
I am not even sure at this point I care about the Pixel, it may have a better camera but I am sure ordering the One Plus 6 I saved hundreds of dollars.

The OP 6T is set to be released in the next couple months. Unless you're in need of a headphone jack, I'd wait to get the latest version.

Personally, I think Oxygen OS is a mess and from what I see on the threads for Pie, they're just patching it yet again and putting a new UI on it over starting from scratch. All they keep doing is carrying over bugs from previous versions and then trying to re-patch them again for either the new device model and/or new Android system. Considering treble is now installed on both the 5 and 6, IMO they should have started fresh and should have been working on coding an entirely new OS 2 years ago.
If I were you, I would wait until Pie is released in the fall and see how it goes and what the complaints are before buying anything.

... That's not how android works .. even less since treble... You don't simply "patch" your Android version up to date, especially when it's a major revision that is changed. Most oftenly they start from scratch with some cherry picks. And rebuild blobs whenever necessary... files come from AOSP in it's normal form, then every time android releases a new version, this has to be merged with the current existing release yes, but that means that every difference from x that y has changes into x (x being the updated file, any of em, Y Being the old, already installed one)... Bringing something on /system over from one of the earlier oos, to a newer oos, would break alot. I mean.. we can't even run ob3 custom kernels on GM pie... Because changes... Having something stick around doesn't mean it hasn't been touched, porting is another thing, and there is also maybe a chance that it's the same group of devs handling this as it was back then. It's still oneplus. Also. Oos isnt nearly as bad as you make it sound.. Oos is by far the best fork of Android I've seen launched as an OEM specific android experience, and I've seen alot of phones. Simply due to its close resemblance of the pure experience, with it's small addins for simplicity, performance, and ease of use. The UI is Google's own new material guideline. Not oneplus'. And there was 3 pie betas wherein other Companies reach up to 18-20 betas... Are we owning the same device?

I didn't say they were patching Android, I said they were patching their OS. Yes, I know they are 2 different things and I know things are working differently since treble. They can fully keep taking their Oxygen OS and throwing it over the latest version of Android and patch it to make it work with the new code, which is exactly what they've been doing. Yes, they get a guideline, that doesn't mean they are stuck doing only that and making no improvements/changes. There are literally hundreds of options they can code for, but don't.
I'm sorry, but it's not only simple, it's downright beyond basic even to what Google turns on and codes for features. Spare me the dribble of "pure android" please, it's a ridiculous mantra. I've not put the beta's on my phone but have been reading the forum and I have not yet received the stable update that has been just pushed out. But I already see some of the complaints coming in and no I'm not talking about the nonsensical postings.
If you think that OP is doing a great job on their OS, then you and I clearly have different standards. I'm glad you love it so much, to each his own in that regard.

To each their own indeed. And it's not a ridiculous mantra.just as countless many others, I do prefer to be able to switch over countless amounts of phone but still have the same familiar, debloated and resource friendly UI. Having to learning all the different "UX"s gets pretty dull, as soon as ie Samsung gets settled with one, they change design language. And that, for me, is a deal breaker, I don't feel like having to relearn the same basics over and over, and where I usually have to install another AOSP based ROM on ie my Xperia, HTC or Samsung. Whilst the OnePlus just has the familiarity and non-rubbish feel to it that AOSP has. But don't get me wrong, as you said, to each their own, and if it wasn't for people like you that don't want the stock feel, we wouldn't have custom kernels and/or ROMs. And I've ran all the betas except ob3 and currently run the stable... And I've yet to run into any app not loading, crashing, or features not working as intended. But I would recommend not jumping on the bandwagon as I regret doing so, until there are some more data and user reviews of the stable branch. And I'm not trusting anyone doing a forum post not being previously recognized or a proper reviewer. The stable build is solid, but it's still early to tell.

Losing LineageOS for it is a great loss! I wish I had more time on my hands to help support this great device.

I use LineageOS in combination with MicroG, so yes! it's a big loss. But I hope I can still use this phone for 2 more years at least. I've planned to get a new mobile contract in 3 months. This time without a smartphone. Next will be a Copperhead Pixel 2 or, if it's available in the future, a Copperhead Pixel 3.

That's very interesting. I wonder how it is living with a phone with Copperhead OS and/or F-droid apps only.
Some people say that avoiding Google services and using F-droid instead in a standard ROM like Lineage gives you an extra hour of screen on time and improved idle power consumption, but information online is scarce about that particular subject. Most people use F-droid just to avoid Google for privacy reasons.

Considering the phone release date was over 3 years ago, I'm not too surprised that ROM development is tapering off at this point. Many users have switched to new devices. The fact that a reliable battery replacement has been so hard to find until recently helped drive more people away. I can't blame devs for moving on.

Legendary phone stands on its own
Thankfully, the stock Rom on this phone is good enough that there's really no need for these. Still, it's better to have more choices than to have fewer choices, so it will be a bit of a hypothetical bummer to one of the greatest smartphones ever.

Just go to the Post below for more info. Ifixit is involved with it so I would imagine it is legit. They can sell just the battery or the entire kit.
I personally got mine off ebay and got lucky. 7+ months and still going strong.

lmao, it never was... Very bad cpu with throttling issues, weak battery, no official batteries for replacement, poor official and unoficial support, poor build quality and no fingerprint scaner lol
