[Q] Moto G Bootloader Unlock: Incorrect password - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have followed the exact steps given on the Motorola website about unlocking the bootloader.
I use XT1033 model(dual sim - India) running Android 4.4.4.
When trying to unlock bootloader, I keep getting the error: <password incorrect> <remote failure>
I have copy pasted the "unlock code" motorola had sent me, and also used the fastboot command:
Code:
fastboot oem unlock <my_secret_alphanumeric_20_digit_key
Please help me regarding the same..
Thanks in advance.

I bet you have entered the number wrong.

In my case I copy paste the code directly from the email send by Motorola, and i also check the number several times

i have copy-pasted the code, nothing can go wrong there i suppose

I'm following the Motorola forum for this problem, they say that is a problem with the new kit Kat update and are working to solve it, but who knows when.

I had a code error (not at this stage, but when entering unlock string into Moto website). Copying into Word document first seemed to solve it. No harm in trying I suppose.

Copy and paste can carry text formatting with it. Manually type the code to avoid errors.

Have you checked your CID value. Some devices cannot be unlocked. I have an XT1033 16gb and i had the same problem. But my device is unlockable.
I found this at the Motorola forums.

The CID values returned is specific to each case.
$ fastboot getvar all
Mine was 0x0007. In this case the device can be unlocked!

I don't think that's the way to unlock your bootloader... You have to go to the Motorola website and enter the code and they'll send you an unlock code.
Then you have to type
Code:
$ fastboot oem unlock UNIQUE_KEY
UNIQUE_KEY is replaced by the code they sent you.
Press thanks of I helped you.

I DID. According to the screenshot, you didn't write $ at the beginning. Also, you wrote (unlock code) instead of the code you received per email. Please study your own screenshots before posting.

Sorry for double-post:
BTW,
Code:
(bootloader) unlock code= (whatever you typed)
Is definitely not the command for unlocking your bootloader.

sorry for being late but recently I was trying to unlock my moto g boot loader and ended up here because I faced:
Code:
(bootloader) Password incorrect!
(bootloader) OEM unlock failure!
FAILED (remote failure)
finished. total time: 0.256s
so thanks to Wendy_W from Motorola forums I have succesfully unlocked my moto g following his instructions in this post:
Code:
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/f2061da875
it seems there was such a problem when unlocking bootloader at moto g 4.4.4 kitkat... so they released a fix img to make it possible... so according to them:
If you are on a Moto G on 4.4.4 and encounter the 'password incorrect' error, please:
Download this ZIP file
Code:
https://forums.motorola.com/files/51c3cbf839/G_4.4.4.BL_Fix.zip
and follow the instructions in the ZIP file. This only applies to users for Moto G , first generation, on 4.4.4. Please do not try these steps on a Moto G 4G LTE, or second generation G.
If your device is still on 4.4.3, please wait until the 4.4.4 upgrade before attempting this - thanks

Any strong solution ? I tried via Google Chrome and Internet Explorer, nothing seem to work.

Just got my Moto G. I tried to unlock my bootloader from the Moto site and I'm having problems as well. I'm positive I'm entering the code correctly and its saying my device doesn't qualify. On the forum thread my CID number shows that it should be eligible for unlock unlock. Apparently Moto hasn't replied with the response in the forum thread, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens happens. I'm ready to root this mofo also.

Try adb and fastboot instead of Windroid
As I tried to explain in my post , this is not possible as the phone will not write the data sent. Thinking this is why windroid returns an error.

Did you enable OEM Unlocking the Developer Options menu? Still required...
I would also recommend doing it manually, the commands are easy and the process is simple... if something goes wrong you can see exactly what fails. Tools like Windroid are not really useful for simple tasks like this.

Gotta be 50 tutorials on-line, there is only one real, official way...
You need at least fastboot (you can get it from Minimal ADB & Fastboot)
Then follow the Moto official method which even using a tool you have to go through anyway to get the tokem

So,
Its not my problem but one of my friend is facing it and I am unable to resolve it no matter what.

I tried unlocking its bootloader but every time I give command, " fastboot OEM get_unlock_data "
It gives a weird error. Saying
Code:

Failed (Remote Failure)
Finished. Total time: 0.243s
I tried searching for a fix all over internet some moto x play users were facing it but no solution.

Hmm... That all looks fine. You're bootloader doesn't show Status as ENGINEERING does it? Otherwise I got nothing, it's giving you a remote failure, which is a device issue. Lenovo official forums has a specific area to ask for assistance with unlocking.
There is no harm in turning usb debugging off, turning OEM unlocking off and turning developer options off.
Then do a factory reset
Then turn developer options on agin, usb debugging on again , OEM unlocking on again and try again via fast boot
It won't cost a penny but may help to resolve the issue

Maybe you should read the thread again, OP can't get the code from the phone with get_unlock_data at all, not issues with the Moto site... The phone is getting the correct command, it even acknowledges its an unlock command, it just fails to get data with a "Remote failure" meaning a failure inside the device.

Unfortunately, everything looks fine... Going to have to say look at the link to Lenovo official forums given a few posts back, nothing else we can do.

Bootloader unlock email not received.

Has anyone received the bootloader unlock email with the unlock codes after requesting them from Motorola?
I went through the steps at https://support.motorola.com/us/en/bootloader/unlockyourdeviceb.
Moto website confirmed the device is unlockable.
I clicked yes on the last popup accepting that this will void my warranty.
Unfortunately the unlock codes never arrive in my email. They're not in my spam folder. I've tried two different email addresses. It's been more than 24 hours since I submitted the request.
Found an answer. The bootloader web page does not appear to finish with Firefox. I requested a code again using Microsoft Edge & the email arrived quickly.
worked for me with FF. Just no response after hitting the blue button, and took about 40 min to arrive. Moto tech support swore up and down it was because phone not qualified for unlock since it does not appear on list of qualified devices. Did not occur to them that phone is newer than list.
Use Google chrome even if u got the code it still won't let you unlock the bootloader.

I was able to unlock the bootloader just fine once I received the unlock code. Not sure why I would want to use chrome as a web browser, it's essentially spyware at this point.

I do not have permission to access the photo you shared. The web browser has nothing to do with the unlocking the bootloader, aside from accessing the moto website to request the code.

If I had to guess you didn't submit the correct unlock data to motorola. Did you get the unlock data & format it as described on the Motorola website?
Yes I did that's what they gave me that code

Assuming you have enabled OEM Unlocking in the Developer Options on the phone, I would run the fastboot oem get_unlock_data command again. You should receive something like:
Code:
(bootloader) 0A40040192024205#4C4D3556313230
(bootloader) 30373731363031303332323239#BD00
(bootloader) 8A672BA4746C2CE02328A2AC0C39F95
(bootloader) 1A3E5#1F53280002000000000000000
(bootloader) 0000000
Follow the instructions and format it correctly, should look like:
Code:
0A40040192024205#4C4D355631323030373731363031303332323239#BD008A672BA4746C2CE02328A2AC0C39F951A3E5#1F532800020000000000000000000000
Then resubmit it to Motorola and see if you get a different unlock code.
If that doesn't work I would contact Motorola support.

No thanks. I can see from your screenshot that you are connecting to the phone via fastboot which can be the hardest part.
Have you tried retrieving the info from your phone again & resubmitting it to Motorola as I suggested?

We'll that's about all the ideas I have. If you want to PM me the output of fastboot oem get_unlock_data and how you have it formatted for submission I can take a look & see if I notice anything.

Hey, I didn't receive a photo. Run the fastboot oem get_unlock_data command & copy it into a PM & I'll take a look. If you're retrieving & submitting the correct info and receiving the invalid unlock code, Motorola's bootloader unlock website must be broken. I just resubmitted my unlock data as a test and received an email with the correct unlock code so it does not appear to be a problem with the Motorola website..
