My friend purchased a new 1+1 and is having issues obtaining a good signal in his basement apartment in Brooklyn. I was wondering if anyone else in the NY area that may be in a basement area is experiencing these issues on MetroPCS.
Also does anyone have a good wifi based calling app that works well. He has tried Uber and Viber I believe but had issues with both. Any help would be appreciated and he is running full stock no root.
I understand that in a basement not all carriers operate well but just trying to see if anyone out there has a solution that I have not been able to find. If not there will be a 1+1 for sale... LOL
Thanks in advance
Can't speak for MetroPCS but since they're pretty much with T-Mobile. I live in Brooklyn and don't have any difficulties obtaining signal in my basement.
I'm not sure if it would even help if he switched to T-Mobile since they're pretty much the same company.

We are going to try that today since my boy who is on T-Mobile is getting his phone today. He is going to go over there and check it out. The difference is of course T-Mobile has priority on the towers and not sure where MetroPCS falls in with the other MVNO's as far as priority for the towers.
He had an old LG 770 or something that apparently worked great but it was also a MetroPCS specific phone

Wow lol your friends sure have a lot of invites .... if they're now starting to get T-Mobile and want a good plan, they should get the T-Mobile $30 plan. 100 minutes, unlimited text, 5GB of high speed data. Its a bummer that the 7 day trial for TMo the iphone uses a nano.. if he has a adapter, he can use the adapter to turn the nano to a micro and then put it in the opo.

Wow do they really use a nano because thats exactly what I told him to do but like I said we will be testing it out on T-Mobile later today. He actually purchase a signal booster and I have no idea why. I would simply try different companies since most are month to month now.
Hold on one of my friends just did that and got the Iphone on Monday. He said it was an Iphone 5s that was sent to him for testing. That has a nano?

Yeah Apple standardly uses Nano-SIMs... he can buy a Nano to Micro SIM adapter. Thats weird that he bought a signal booster, T Mobile usually supplies you one for free if you fulfill certain criteria when it comes to having 1 bar of signal or something like that.

Or a adapter if he goes into a phone shop, they should carry them there. Its really weird too because when I powered on my OPO with the tmobile sim, it defaulted to metropcs apn instead of the tmo 4g apn so he should watch out for that as well

I have T-Mobile and a guy at work always rags me since the merger saying I'm on Metro. I live and work in the Tampa Bay area so both T-Mobile and Metro have 4G/LTE service here. A few co-workers have Metro and I always kill them on speed test. In fact some of them need to walk outside just to make a phone call or download something while I can do it all inside without any loss in service.
In fact the guy who rags me is on Verizon and he now shuts his mouth since I also destroyed his speed test results.
I really just think it has to do with Metro.

I agree with you and like I said the test will be done later today but trying to keep him from doing anything crazy till we test. He has to stand in one part of his apartment just to make a call. I would be upset too but then again its a basement....
Its probably on lower priority like what playya said to make people switch over from MetroPCS to T Mobile as they're slowly and slowly reallocating the spectrum to tmo.

Yea my house in NY was out in Long Island and in my basement there I was still able to get reception and about 20 down speeds while I was there. I even told him to put his phone on Edge but it did not work either. I think/hope a different carrier like T-Mo will solve issue

@zephiK No luck with T-Mobile and basement. It seems the antenna does not like his basement with MetroPCS or T-Mobile

Same here. The only thing I can think of is that there are a lot of walls and not a lot of windows so signal is hard to penetrate. Does he get LTE speeds as well? Too bad the T Mobile Take Action page is down, it was a page to note down complaints on signal.

I just got the phone today me and fiance both got same phone we were told our area had 3g coverage i contacted tmobile support and the tech stated it is not availabe he actually suggested we seek another carrier anyone have any suggestions to getting better quality signal and data...
Since you bought it from Tmob you should ask and get the unlock codes for free and also should be opt out of the early contract termination fee as well because it was not your fault about the coverage area. Don't let them push you around. Stick to your guns that the tmob rep said you would have 3G and yet you do not.
Check with ATT and see if they have better coverage in your area. The G2X can work on ATT networks as well but you would have to do some research on the settings and etc.
Thats my two cents if your gonna leave Tmob and keep the phones.
As for getting better reception or data signal theres pretty much nothing you can do to make it better if the towers aren't there.

Agree with all that, maybe you can get the phone as a Standard rate plan, which they don't offer with smart phones. You can then use it wifi all over the place. And when the merger hits, you might get better reception if they can share antenna....though some say the G2x will not work on any 3G ATT signals.
thanks for the responses
Yea ive been searching around seeing if there was a fix or noticable difference in rooted pre gb releases for better sig/data strength and such i even caled tmo when i got home and spoke with tech rep and he suggested that i just return devices and go to a diff network I felt that was a horrible way to represent the company. Didnt even try or make a feeble attempt to troubleshoot just blew it off to ah well you dont get 3g in your area so to bad basically.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the G2X only works on the 1700mhz 3G band. ATT does not use this band so he would be stuck on 2g, which is exactly the problem he's having with tmobs now.
well i should have gone further in to detail
The issue is in the store i was told that i would be in a 3g area once i got home i was only staring at the letter G on the highway i had 2G but at home now even outside I am at G and tech on the phone said i was in 2g area then proceeded to tell me i should look in to another company problem is ive tried verizon which is incredible service horrible support and sprint which had great customer service but horrid service I can travel to mount vernon and data roam.

Hmmm you might be right and i have to retract my statement cuz now ever since the phone was released it showed that it was quad band and had both bands for tmob and ATT for 2g/3g/4g bands and now LG says its not.
Even Tmobs site showed it had that capability. I'm reading into it now. Thanks for the refresh course.
No one suggested WiFi Calling? I use it at work and its awesome. Really cuts down on battery usage too. Plus WiFi Calling is now FREE on Tmobile so why WOULDN'T you want to use it at home or at work?
Beats paying AT&T for a $100 WiFi Extender and having it come out of your bank of minutes.
Plus WiFi Calling works over standard WiFi, so even at McDonalds it will work.
Of course this is under the assumption that there IS some coverage around your home. If there was NO service then I would probably just look elsewhere. If you can at least make calls in your neighborhood and calls, text, and surf the web at home (using WiFi Calling and WiFi) then that isn't so bad. Text messages work on any network grade. The only issue you'd have with a slower network is data. But if there is decent service "around" your house, then WiFi calling works wonders to make sure you are online around your home.
It would actually be kinda cool to reply on a WiFi router for service because at 10pm I could just pull the plug and cells go off. No kids texting at 2am.

No one really knows but Tmobile is releasing lots of "Quad-band" phones in the event the AT&T merger goes through. They've even stated they ONCE the merger goes through, they will unlock the other frequencies.
So while there is no absolute answer whether our phones are truely quad-band until we crack it open and actually test, it would be odd that it passed FCC, had it listed on the website, and touted as one of the biggest features... only to NOT have no such hardware.
Makes more sense that Tmobile just "locked it up" for now.

There really isn't much the csr over the phone can do. If you don't have service the person on the phone can't magically teleport a tower into your hood.
They offered you the chance to return the phone and get your money back. How else would you like them to proceed when they can't provide you with service?
Thanks all for the responses
Yea thats what ive been doing just got it set up to wifi in the house honestly out and about not that big an issue as i already have everything i need on the phone at that point unless its a game using data based connectivity which i can deal the phone in itself is just to nice for me to let go of and as for the last post honestly youve waited your breathe and I dont appreciate the rudeness really there is no magic tmo fairy to pop out of my ass and stick a new tower in my back yard gosh there goes that idea. but yea def love the phone testing out root lol i couldnt wait day 1 rooted and working on a good rom/kernel combo in the near future you can look forward to me buildling from aosp soon as this has been something i have been nearing for quite a while now just couldnt find a decent enough phone to dev on so be on the look out for the Triumph Rom coming soon to your neck of the woods.
I was rude? I thought I was just being logical and asked what you would have done if you were the csr.
I'm glad you are at least trying the phone out via wifi, 99% of the people here would have ditched it.
well if i mistook you i apologize
But i def would not recommend someone leave my business for another without prior checking thoroughly to see what other options there may be this guy spent 5 minutes on the phone with me he was in tech support and did no do any literally anything to troubleshoot why i was listed in a 2g area but only getting 1g was my big issue but honestly ill take this over sprint any day i cannot leave the house 5 minutes in any direction without data roaming so just pushed over dark and sin with faux kernel going to set it up and test drive I will be working up some gb roms once official release is out which from the reads i have found is only sometime soon. heres to hoping.
So i've had the N5 for 4 days now and i just recently switched to Tmobile from Sprint. When im in my house i rarely have more than 1 bar of service and frequently 0 bars. The phone seems to not automatically switch to any other mode (3g/2g). The attached screen shot is only from 4 hours of use, being outside more than inside and still only little blips of green on the mobile network connection log. I work outside and still being outside 8 hours a day still wont have much green on that log.
I dont have another phone from t-mobile to try out but it seems a few people have said that the N5 has radio issues. Not sure if this problem is phone/hardware related?
My data speeds are not the issue here, its more the cell connection for phone calls. My girlfriend has called me many times with my phone laying on the counter when the phone had 1 or 0 bars and it would never ring or show a missed call.
Ive called tmo and they said the towers are good and i that i dont have a "stong" LTE signal but it is "good". I have also went to tmo store and they swapped out the sim card for me, same issue.
The phone i have seems to be the newest batch of N5's with a 401KP serial number and a 01/13/14 manufacture date.
Im super happy with the phone overall but if not being able to receive calls from people is very frustrating and nullifies all the good that this phone has going for it.
Im in the chicago area. Anyone else having this issue?
Any advice/help is appreciated.
See my attachment. I'm on tmo as well. I usually get between 1-4 bars of LTE, yet, it is always yellow. T-Mobile is known to have issues with penetration in buildings. Here in Atlanta it seemed to have gotten way better as of the past few months to where I always have reception and good download speeds. But, there are still areas where when my phone screen is off it likes to go to no signal, and then to 2 bars when I'm using it. Although, they only happens at my gfs parents house. They all have ATT and had to get a signal booster to get service, while sprint barely gets anything there. So I guess it isn't s big deal at all since other carriers struggle more there.

So you are postpaid, If you call in t-mobile and ask if you quality for a signal booster as you do not have good service in home but you do outside.
Certain requirements though to get one you need to live in a single family home and not in a apartment complex the reason is because E911 wont locate you and they cannot dispatch police right away
If you are successful like I did you will get one for free and I also got it 1 day overnight express

2) ask if you quality for a signal booster and when they say if you have any connected walls or shared walls something inbetween those lines state no
3)They're going to do some troubleshooting if you have edge in or 1bar of 4g or LTE TURN ON Airplane mode they're actually going to ping the device state on the mobile network (testing to see if you're a lier)
Tips: Kiss ass, complement things like i love t-mobile etc, be patient and have a nice happy voice, call using another phone NOT on t-mobile..

It supports EDGE/HSPA and t-mobile newly refarmed 1900pcs HSPA
its pretty future proof as HSPA will be here long. besides HSPA is what makes the calls not LTE
better to have some data and calls than no calls and data at all..
it also conserves battery life as the signal is strong and your device wont have to search for signals

Yeah,, you have to be valuable to TMO to get this (ala multiple postpaid lines). The last case I saw here was months ago, and he went all the way to retention before they sent him a cel-fi. Regular CSR's may not have the option on their system.
WRT, HSPA+, use phoneinfo app (market) to toggle GSM-only/LTE settings.

IIRC (from Nexus 4 forum), he had two lines, was over $120/mo, and had played CSR roulette trying for a cel-fi. After he said he wanted to cancel (he TRULY had poor coverage at home) and got a hold of retention, he was able to eek one out. Most fora say their cel-fi supply has been drained, however, based on user reports.
The main reason I was following this was for a business client of mine. He's 'last mile' internet, despite dead fiber running down his street less than 20 feet away. He currently pays over $400/mo for ISDN 1.5 synchronous 2yr/contract. Yet, I get over 40MBPS at his location on TMO, outdoors, but drop to near nothing inside his metal buildings. I'm unable to convince him TMO is capable of business-critical uptime, but I think a cel-fi in his window could go a long way towards convincing him.
I've been with ATT for a tear bow. I had the S4 before this G3. On my S4 I would have LTE most places around my town. Since getting my G3 I rarely get LTE. When I do get LTE it doesn't hold on to that connection very long.
Yesterday I was trying to look something up and I was on Edge (3g) and it was taking forever, so I grabbed my wife's S5 and it was on LTE (also on ATT) and the internet worked great.
Are the radios in this phone just that bad? I'm going to get a new Sim card today to see if that can fix the issue, I'm hesitant to return the phone for another because I'll probably get a refurb and my luck with refurb cell phones hasn't been good

Hmm... This could be a deal breaker if it keeps up
I feel like I'm back on sprint again

Radio's suck. Been mentioned a million times, plus LG is infamous for have serious programming software issues.allot of times you have to put it in airplane modethen back on to get it to lock on anything ...kinda garbage, it's too bad cause I love the phone.

So is there anything I can do on my end to fix the issue?
so i got a new sim card, lets see how this goes
I have bad reception at home but can still get 12mb down on LTE. Downtown I get 35 down and 17 up with 4 bars. Signal can't penetrate the brick at home. I drop calls constantly. I'm about to pick up a microcell but data is great.
Much better than Sprint in my area. My Sprint GS5 radio is real garbage. Kills the battery too. The Sprint variant of the GS5 is horrible with Spark.
You may have a lemon radio in your phone.
I'm wondering that, I'd hate to get a refurb and fine out it performs the same

I got a new sim yesterday also. not looking like it's making much of a difference. I can't get full bars unless i'm out on the street. I used to get full bars in my office, relatively close to a window.
Don't really want to trade this if for a refurb to have the same thing.
Is the antenna on the back of the battery case? or is that just a 'booster'?

I've had the AT&T G3 since July 18th with no problems. My old G-note would not pick up LTE in my office at work but I get LTE with this phone. No dropped calls and super fast data. I live in northern VA outside DC so LTE is really good here.
I just realized I'm being throttled... May data has sucked last few days also lol... I'm at crawling speeds

as far as bars go mine seems just about right, but it does lose service a bit more than my S4 did. sometimes my wife and i will both have 3 or 4 bars and she will have LTE and i will be on EDGE or 4G
Absolutely love the device as a smartphone, but unfortunately suffer from the same issues as the rest of you here.
Loses signal where other ATT devices do not, drops LTE for HSPA or EDGE where other devices stay on LTE.
Really hoping the crappy radio can be fixed with a firmware update, and that it isn't a hardware design flaw...

Not sure what if anything changed, possibly something with the network but now I get full bars at my desk, where yesterday I wasn't. I know this isn't very scientific but now I get full bars in the same seat where for the last week I've been down 1 or 2. I didn't think to run a speedtest before but it looks good now, 18.4 down and 10 up.

I also forgot to mention that when I had my Sim swapped out that ISIS (Did they change the name because now it says ' Soft Card') doesn't work. When I launch the Soft Card (Isis) app it says that i need an enhanced SIM. So it looks like I have to go back to AT&T to get yet another SIM.

Of another G3? I wouldn't waste time doing that. Sounds like they're all the same radio-wise.
Waiting on an OTA too... but if nothing comes, I will jump ship to another device altogether. One with a competent radio.

I want to root and try to change this in the build prop.
Permanent LTE Option
# default value is 9
ro.telephony.default_network=12
Part of me thinks it will help
I believe this makes the phone hang onto an LTE connection as long as possible
Can anybody let me know if they switched from VZW to T mobile how the experience has been?
Do you regret it because of signal issues?
Thanks for any advice. [emoji106] [emoji111]
My girlfriend has T-mobile, and I used to have Verizon, until I switched to Sprint for their Google Voice integration. With T-mobile, the signal is realllyy spotty, but with Verizon it was quite good. This is from having been in the same place as her and only I had signal. So, I think you made a good choice.
I think it depends on where you are. Some areas T-Mobile sucks and some areas they are great but if you consider the savings worth, that what matters.
you can test drive Tmobile for 7 days free !
they even send you iphone5s to play for 7 days !
just google tmobile test drive
It just sucks that we probably won't have root with the Verizon version of the Edge.
It depends on where u live if you stay , Here in metro Detroit T-Mobile is the best provider IMO and there LTE speeds beats Verizon , AT&T, and Sprint. If you live in a rural area T-Mobile shouldn't be considered.

T-Mobile has converted some of their Edge network to LTE already and is continuing that process as we speak. Also, they are setting up their 700Mhz LTE network which will require a phone with Band 12 capabilities. Their network continues to improve, but I would try out the test drive and see how you like it. Be sure to return the phone or else they are going to bill you for it.

Here in Minnesota tmobile is awesome, verizon obviously has the best coverage overall, but tmo In the last couple years has extended it's reach immensely, don't get me wrong, the coverage up here is outstanding, speeds are faster than verizon overall, the only difference in the extreme northwoods, like border of Canada in the middle of a lake miles and miles from a person I will have service, i might not have lte whereas verizon does spottingly (that a word?) Lol but overall I have zero complaints, in fact I have a couple buddies that are also in your dilemma take them for a spin first and see what you think

Thanks everyone. I am in Northern Virginia and the reviews are mixed here. While I am close to DC and Richmond so signal and coverage should be strong, there are so many military bases, Airports and suburbs- which all help to create problem areas.
I will have to give it a try to really get a good gauge. Why can't VZW just release a unlocked phone, save me these dilemmas. Lol.
Again, thanks for all the feedback.

It's been a little over a year since I have been in that area, but when I was there, I had pretty good service. The only time I had any issues, was when I was inside buildings. But they have rolled out the 700 mhz spectrum there so that should greatly improve signal quality indoors.
Edit: Also, the only two phones listed on the T-Mobile website that support Band 12 are the Note 4 and the Note Edge. So you won't be able to test the connectivity if you do the 7 day test drive with the Iphone 5S.

Could you maybe pay off your t-mobile phone and just use straight talk with the t-mobile compatible straight talk sim card?
It's what I do.
If you have the unlimited data from Verizon i'd stay. they no longer offer that and if you switch to a carrier with bad reception in your area then you wont get to go back. as far as the strait talk comment goes that is no good either, their data speeds are ridiculously low. my wife has straight talk (Verizon phone) and i run circles around her with my Verizon contract phone. it may say 4g, but it's a lie... i just wish they still offered unlimited data so i could have used my upgrade that now will never be used.
if you do not have the unlimited package with Verizon i suggest you run like hell to the first available option that has service in your area. Verizon is mean. unfortunately for me there is no other choice atm.
Straight talk users a bunch of networks like at&t and T-mobile. It will vary by which network you're using on which phone in what area. Even different phones can vary because of their antenna and design blocking reception like some early iPhones. Just a thought. There's a lot of prepaid plans out there, I'd look into those and keep the phone if possible.
So I have bought a HTC u11 plus and should get it today. What I have done the past week is check my bands at the places I visit most. And while driving. I used lte discovery app to help me with this and some Google searches. In my findings band 2 is hardly used when I am at home or driving. My 1+5 is always on band 4 or 12. At home is the only place where it is on band 2 but it switches to 4 and uses this mostly but I use wifi calling at home due to coverage sucking at my house. I did a Google search on band 2 and it is not very good around my areas. So people with TMobile USA should be fine to get this phone and use here. Also my cousin has a HTC 10 from overseas which has less bands enabled and has never had an issue with lte or call connection with TMobile. Once I get the phone I will do more testing for TMobile folks. Let me know your results if you have any.

Lol i got the notification on this and saw CJ. For a minute i was like is he referring to me? Who the heck is CJ lol i laughed after i figured it out. . Anyway so after having the phone in my hands with all of its beauty and awesomeness. I could not take it anymore. This phone works great if you have a wifi and data connection all the time. But for people who still makes voice phone calls it is the worst.. so bad i put it on ebay yesterday. I got so frustrated the other day. I was trying to make a call and when you do, it drops down to 2g,3g. The call qualty on that is horrible. The calls always dropped and when i did have a good connection the quality was horrible. Half the time i would not get text messages and not everyone uses whats app and that is what i was trying to use because i always will have data. No VOLTE which i missed no WIfi calling which does come in handy. So i kept looking and band 2 does more than LTE I believe that band 2 also deals with AWS which is needed for calling. Man i tried.... i tried to put up with it here in the states. The phone itself is just amazing the Pixel that got away is what i call it. So if you are here in the states Dont buy it unless you have data connection and everyone has like data messaging or calling for a strong data connection. I am really sad and dissapointed at HTC the phone i have been waiting for since the HTC sensation 4g. Hopes this helps.

Well, crap. Thank you for conducting the experiment. Yeah, it's the Pixel 2XL WITH an sd card slot, which is what I want, except apparently without Band 2, the thing's hobbled. I was gonna install the Google HDR+ camera app and have it all! Damn.
I got my hopes up because I saw reports of people bringing the Exynos Note 8 over here and getting it to work, but IT has Band 2! Seriously, how tough is it to add these bands! Do people want to sell phones or not?!!
Anyway, thanks again. An answer is an answer, even if it's not the one I was hoping for.
And yeah, if you're reclaiming that term, I completely respect that, but I still gotta go with CJ.
Sucks to hear that. I've been using my HTC U11+ in the Bay Area for about two weeks now and so far it's been absolutely flawless. Not a single issue finding LTE or dropping calls.

Sorry for the delayed response, but I got it from Amazon. Took about 4-5 days to receive it even though Amazons system said 2 weeks. I also just noticed that it's a decent amount cheaper now as well compared to when I bought it in December by over $100.

I agree with this I've had zero issues so far since getting this phone. Only had it for a day now but prior to I ran LTE Discover on my HTC U11 and saw I very rarely used Band 2 (San Diego). After some digging I saw how Band 2 works on T-Mobile and I'm OK without it. I'll be in Vegas in a week so I'll be curious how it holds up there, though I don't really expect hiccups. The one thing I do want to get back is VOLTE/VOWIFI.

I'm not far from you and I just picked up my U11+ from Swappa. Does this phone actually read "4G LTE" when in LTE service area? I have not seen it yet. I have the Nexus 6 and a Note 5 and both have had that when in and around Maryland. THanks for replying when you do.

No, it just says 4G. However, when using apps such as Speed Test by Ookla, it says I'm connected to "LTE T-Mobile", and the speed test are roughly what I was getting on my previous iPhone 6S Plus.

Thank you. I did install LTE Discovery and was able to get information on what band I am on and more. It keeps flipping back to 'H' loads which is made me wondering what I might be doing wrong if it is not in the phone itself. I am in a strong 4G LTE area for work (base) and home. My Nexus 6 and my Note 5 always read 4G LTE in an area as such. I still love this phone even though it's not 2 weeks old yet.
I'm tempted to get this for an upgrade from my HTC 10. I don't care too much about the dual camera for the HTC 12+, plus I want it in Red which might not even come out in the US. So with the bigger battery 3,900 mah, about $200 less and the red color now. Would this be a good buy if I typically travel around the east coast?
I have one I purchased on a recent trip overseas to Taiwan. My carrier here in the US is Tmobile and I only have connectivity issues in rural areas. Can someone point me to a stock ROM from Tmobile that would be compatible with this phone?
Thanks.
