[Q] What are the current methods to get unlimited tether (tmobile) - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an unlimited simple choice plan and was wondering what the current ways to get unlimited tethering are.. All the stuff I can find are really old.
If I had a choice in method of tether I would do via USB but if I have to use wifi that is fine.. Actually in some ways wifi would be better now that i think about it...

This works, read the reviews, I use it every day and have tethered over 30GB this month with my T-Mo unlimited plan.

If your phone is rooted, "settings put global tether_dun_required 0" in Terminal Emulator or ADB Shell should work, tested with Vodafone in Italy (not sure about T-Mo).

Huh, I had no idea you could do it with a simple terminal command like that. I bought sqlite editor to do it... lol
Anyway, this works for me on T-Mobile. I personally used SQLite Editor from Speed Software and added "tether_dun_required = 0" to the global table in /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db. Other people have reported that you also need to do something to mask the traffic from your PC (using a different useragent) but I've had no issues using my PC as-is.

I've seen some people post that you need to switch the APN from ipv6 to ipv4, but I've personally had no issue tethering on ipv6. And that has nothing to do with being "caught," if you need to switch to ipv4 then tethering will just not work from what I understand.

Gotcha. My cycle just ended yesterday too. Would have been a good time to try. If it doesn't work, would the worst thing just be that I have no tethering til next month?

Yeah, since your plan comes with 3GB (or 5GB, if you're on the $30 data feature) of tethering they're not going to bust you for tethering, they just cut you off when you hit the limit. And if you later get it working properly you'll get your tethering back. I forgot to change the setting once after flashing a ROM and got cut off, but as soon as I set it back tethering was working again.
You can also just install the MyAccount app so that you can check if it is counting as tethering usage as you go. Unfortunately the website doesn't list tethering usage, only the app.

I have 2.5 because I'm on the grandfathered simple choice. I'll try it out. Thanks! Do you know if upload and download are counted separately somehow? I just remember back when I had my S3 and didn't have a tethering plan at all I used one of those rooted tethering apps. It let me use it for a while but as soon as I started uploading videos I got cut off.

Do I need to change any APN settings?
Edit: it does not seem to be working.. Tmobile is detecting the tether.

Okay the free option didn't work for me... I guess I can try this.
Is there any set up required to get it to work?
edit: followed instructions on app page.. seems to be working
I had my tether up ot 2.9GB and it has stopped there.. while my phone data goes up.

I used SQ editor and did the the "tether_dun_required" method with a value set at 0. I have T-Mobile unlimited 4G LTE plan and use this as my home connection. So far I have used 79.66 GB of unlimited data lol

And then download widget to one-click turn on hot-spot.
Because it takes like 4 clicks/menus to turn it on normally.
By enabling the above hotspot how does/can AT&T verify I'm tethering? I'm on the unlimited (throttled) plan and really don't want to be switched.
Freezing the manager and using the widget worked perfectly. Thanks guys. With 40 MB

Yes, they can, I got the nasty gram recently (actually the second one).
I was honest and told them I was tethering a laptop, I suspect that honesty is what got them to put me back on my unlimited.
We are not exactly sure how they are detecting tethering, there are a number of ways (using the TTL for example, it decreases as it passes each network device on the path to the destination, ATT expect a certain TTL value when it comes from a phone, when it comes from a tethered device, that value will be 1 less). Other methods involved deep packet inspection, where you can identify that network address translation is taking place.
Also, apparently the iphone tags tethered packets or something.
To get around this, run openvpn (you will need a vpn server somewhere as well), and tunnel all your traffic through teh VPN server... The only thing ATT will ever see is an encrypted tunnel between your phone and the vpn server and nothing else.
There is alot more to it, but it works.
I have not gotten one of these letters/texts/email and I teather ALL the time and stream
but i have NEVER been over 3gigs of data on my 2 gig plan. so its not just simply TETHERING......i think they are looking for data usage.

Your on a tiered plan, they would encourage you using data, because then they get money from you.
They watch unlimited data users like a hawk, but that's why I use a VPN to encrypt my data, have fun figuring out what I'm doing.

getting around wifi tether?

sorry, if this has been answered already, I have a customer who wants to buy this phone, but doesnt want to pay extra for wifi tether.
Is it as simple as just rooting and downloading a 3rd party app like open garden tether? or do you have to flash a whole different rom?
You have to unlock the bootloader via HTCDev.com then root, then install a 3rd party app. You can keep the stock rom.

In the development section there is an all in one rooting tool. Does that unlock the bootloader? My customer isn't great with tech and I don't really have access to a computer right now to research it
it doesnt unlock bootloader, It takes you to the site that unlocks bootloader.
it makes the process easier, but there is manual work involved

What is preferred $20 plan? Is this like a legacy plan or can i call tmo and ask them to put me on this? I currently have 2gb plan for $20. Tmo is trying hard to get me on 5gb, yesterday they said hotspot/tether is free with 5gb and throttle speed is better in 5 gb plan.
I just dont like the fact that I cannot use hot spot on this phone out of the box like my earlier phones - amaze, MT4GS and MT4G.

Again, you CAN, but the app that does it is T-Mobile's own, so it phones home to check whether you qualify for it. With your myTouch, that wasn't the case, and it was a relatively stock feature of Android. If you're really going to get into Android a bunch, you might as well root the device and install Open Garden.

[Q] Free wifi hotspot gone

Try open garden, the one that looks like a tree, you'll need it on both devices and it creates a mesh network, some caviets are apps tha use data wont work, so you have to do everything through your web browser. This solution also solves the screen off issue while tethering.
As of right now this has been removed or blocked in the newest update.
There is nothing yet been found to allow you to set your own APN again.
You can use wifi tethering with FoxFi as a workaround from foxfi.com/bin but for data to work over wifi tethering you will need to keep the screen on.
That is about the only workaround.

Or use open garden and it makes a mesh network, data still flows with screen off, you'll need open garden on both devices. The only issue is apps that use data like the play store will say your not connected, but anything you want to do with the browser you can.
I know not perfect but thats the closest we have right now, besides keeping the screen on.

This might be a workaround worth trying..

Changing the UA(user-agent) is just one of the few obstacles to overcome. The main problem is the tmo OTA update now prevents/locks us from entering the APN needed to bypass/trick the t-mobile tethering check.

We already do pay for it with our monthly contracts, we are allowed x amount of data per month, we go over it and the speed of data isn't even worth tethering. Do they give us money back on the data we don't use? No they don't, so why can't we use the data we pay for any way we want, it's not like data for a tablet costs more or anything like that, it's just greed on the providers end plain and simple.
I just ended up talking to an agent about my bill and I brought up the fact that I couldn't tether anymore, so they put that back on free of charge. I mean hell I'm already paying a decent amount monthly and I have the 5 gig package (which used to be advertised with transforming your device to a hotspot), there is no reason to ask for more other than greed?

I also have a 5 gig plan and the hotspot is supposed to be free, but my 5 gig plan is old and the only way for me to get the hotspot is for me to give up unlimited messaging, which I then would have to pay $15 a month for, umm, yeah, they got me coming and going. BLAH
I work for tmo, and we do give it for free with the 5 & 10gb plans.
Second, I've noticed that it works with Firefox, but no other browser when tethering to a PC/Mac. I haven't edited my APN.

If you're on unlimited, it's unreasonable to ask for wifi tethering. That's like going to a "all you can eat" restaurant, and then bringing a truck to load with food.

Lol, exactly. That's why there's home internet providers. And if you really just want to use your phone, then just get a 10gb plan that has the free hotspot. You're paying for the investment in network upgrades, your paying the engineers salary to produce a network that's very good.
And of course, the CEO's bonus checks lol

Using other roms i can tether temporarally. Well, i get a push message to stop asap or risk losing access. (Im on that unlimited plan.) so i stop. It does work though tethering to my nexus 7, im assuming because it shows it being a mobile device vs. desktop.
The default rom pushes all tethering through pcweb.tmobile.com which depending on your rate plan, determines if you get tether access. custom roms shouldn't have this setup.
I also have a Nexus 7 and the unlimited plan. I'm rooted on the S1 (no ROMs loaded yet) and am now trying to figure out where to go from here.

You can try a new APN. Menu->Settings->More->Mobile Networks->APN or Access Point Names->Menu->New APN
Name it whatever you want and set the APN to epc.tmobile.com. this should bypass tmobile's tethering block.
Also, I've noticed that even if rooted, a desktop using ie, safari or chrome still gets blocked, but Firefox does not.

Just did a speedtest on this with the Boost Varient got 1.06 Mb/s download and 0.39 Mb/s upload.
Nothing to scream at, but It lets me tether on boost which is great especially once I have 7GB of data

I've used pdanet for many years which includes usb and wifi tether. I regularly use 500+gb a month without being throttled. The program hides tether usage 100% but doesn't hide overall usage so i recommend the $60 plan. Its available in the playstore or from the developers website @ junefabrics.

I went through hours of research, tried to use adb she'll to change tether dun required to 0, changed to ipv4, added dun In apn settings, went through a VPN and NOTHING Works. I'm about to go back to 5.0.1 to get unthrottled Hotspot, after my 5 gb it goes down to 100kb or less I'm sick of it. I don't know how else to get full unthrottled Hotspot. Maybe the custom rom will get me around the Hotspot throttling and I feel as if I'm throttled on data even though I'm on the unlimited plan on metro, maybe the custom rom will get me around that too. Either way any advice? Thanks in advance

which ver. of android does it have? i know for LP is not easy to get pass the provision you should check for LP Tether hack or like i said before Wifi Tether Router does a good job with Unlimited tethering well does for me.
I have tether router, I'm on 5.1 I tried changing provisions, I just tried x tether on xposed which is supposed to auto fix all the checks it still doesn't work. Maybe I need to wait till metro resets my tether after I pay my bill again for it to work unlimited?

you have this Wifi Tether Router App and data still count off Hotspot? which settings you have?
Wpa2, channel 1, interface wlan 0, method hostapd apd tried android 4.2 or higher but have the same speed, drivers 802.11, wifi mode G, host apd unchecked. What am I doing wrong, since you have unlimited bandwidth on your tether? I get good mbs until i reach my tether 5mb threshold then they turn me to 125kb

Pdanet works perfectly. just create a new access point and make it identical to the metro one expect change the apn protocol to ipv4. Pdanet works with or without root and with custom roms. It hides all tether usage usb and wifi 100% but whatever data is used will count towards your total allotment if not on the $60 unlimited plan. If you use usb tethering select hide tether usage level 1. Dont enable the tether or hotspot options from your phones settings do everything through pdanet.
I regularly use well over 500gb a month between usb and wifi and have never been throttled or warned etc. Ive used pdanet since 2006 through sprint, boost, att and metro using about every phone you could imagine and it always worked flawlessly.

Is there a way to tether for free with root on 5.1.1?

Hey guys, i recently got root on 5.1.1 and im wondering if there is a way to get wifi tethering for free? I've tried changing tethering lines in build.prop and they are not working, and i tried wifi tether router with lg g stylo recommended settings but my internet will drop, any help getting wifi tethering to work?

Boost will throttle your speeds to next to nothing once you reach your 3g/4g data cap. It took me less than a day to reach that limit when i used boost in the past that's why i went to metro. Even if you did wifi tether with boost you cant hide your data usage and would be throttled regardless.
Ok so in settings.db i changed tether_dun_required from 1 to 0 and no dice, i still get tethering error, in my build.prop, net.tethering.noprovisioning and wifi.lge.common_hotspot were already set to true so i think there is nothing else i can do.

hmmm...i had to add net.tethering.noprovisioning=true (it wasn't in the build.prop) you can try making it say false ?
I wouldn't do this on T-Mobile, they are laying down infrastructure that will tell if it is a phone or PC/router. Easy enough to do with a connection check request. And T-Mobile is going to increase there per kiloB charges and start charging for illegal tethering instead of just kicking you off the network. You wont know they know till you get the bill.
just trying to give you a for warning.

T-Mobile just came forth and warned everyone that you will be caught. ATT just implemented the tech and now T-Mobile is installing it. It does random browser request checks and total "spurt" downloads. Also they plan on cutting all VPN access and only reinstalling it upon a 611 request to block encrypted VPN access.
The funny thing is none of the companies can ever come forth and state how bad the impact is for that less that .2% of people violating the TOG(terms of agreement).
I'm just giving everyone a for warning before you get a 4000+ buck bill for 1.99 per meg.

The people I know that get T-Mobile and AT&T get it for tethering purposes cause of the unlimited data (or pretty damn close to it) .-. so now they will be screwed and thank god I’m with boost and I don't have to worry for now
That is pretty messed up, btw i didnt have to send my stylo to lg, radioshack gave me a free replacement even though i passed my return period.
