getting around wifi tether? - HTC One S

sorry, if this has been answered already, I have a customer who wants to buy this phone, but doesnt want to pay extra for wifi tether.
Is it as simple as just rooting and downloading a 3rd party app like open garden tether? or do you have to flash a whole different rom?

You have to unlock the bootloader via HTCDev.com then root, then install a 3rd party app. You can keep the stock rom.

In the development section there is an all in one rooting tool. Does that unlock the bootloader? My customer isn't great with tech and I don't really have access to a computer right now to research it

it doesnt unlock bootloader, It takes you to the site that unlocks bootloader.
it makes the process easier, but there is manual work involved

If you have a 5GB data plan with tmousa, then the wifi tether is included in the cost data plan.

Unless you are on the android preferred plan. 5 gb of data for only $20.00. Then you need the work around

You mean the wifi hotspot/tether doesn't come with the android preferred $20 data plan? Good to know!

What is preferred $20 plan? Is this like a legacy plan or can i call tmo and ask them to put me on this? I currently have 2gb plan for $20. Tmo is trying hard to get me on 5gb, yesterday they said hotspot/tether is free with 5gb and throttle speed is better in 5 gb plan.
I just dont like the fact that I cannot use hot spot on this phone out of the box like my earlier phones - amaze, MT4GS and MT4G.

Again, you CAN, but the app that does it is T-Mobile's own, so it phones home to check whether you qualify for it. With your myTouch, that wasn't the case, and it was a relatively stock feature of Android. If you're really going to get into Android a bunch, you might as well root the device and install Open Garden.

You have to be rooted to use this as well, but it works.

I just got done reverting back to Modaco's ROM which is based on the EU software. It doesn't check the data plan. I thought I needed to choose between Wifi Calling and Wifi Tethering and I chose Tethering.
I forgot all about 3rd party apps. I now need to go BACK to the ROM based on stock TmoUS and install Open Garden.

Mobile AP (tethering experience)

So I am sitting in the Atlanta airport and came to the realization that my lovely new Infuse cannot tether. I should have known since I have yet to try rooting it. I picked it up on Friday and have been taking baby steps. (Don't want to brick it..lol) So I call ATT and asked to have tethering added figuring I would just pay for it until I root. They told me I would Have come off of my unlimited data plan in order to tether. Of course, I politely declined. H to the No.

I am looking into the PDANET program for that purpose. It doesn't provide wireless but has USB/BT options, which is fine with me because the USB option would also charge the phone...

If you are rooted, just use Bloat Freezer or Ti Backup Pro to freeze the Tethering Manager. Then you can use the Samsung Mobile AP.

You guys rock, im using my Infuse in Dominican Republic and unlocked it to work with Claro H+ plan, it works perfect with wifi tether...... SuperOneclick + Wifi tether and that's it....
you really do want to freeze the tethermanager.apk
otherwise the phone will let at&t know that you're using some third party wifi tethering stuff.
There is absolutely no need for third-party tethering apps. Just freeze/delete the AT&T tethering APK mentioned above, or install any of the alternate ROMs.
Yes, this is one case where REMOVING an app increases functionality.

yeah but all phones have something standing in the way of tethering. funnily enough, even if i payed for tethering, id still kill off tethermanager because it takes like five minutes to check if you even can. i wouldnt do that every time.
Killing the AT&T tethering APK
I've heard reports that AT&T can see if you freeze or delete this APK any reports that this is actually true?
and how would they go about doing that? with tethermanager gone, they dont have any services that report back to att. if i where to install a new rom, they definitely wouldnt have anything.

With the APK killed/frozen, it's not reporting, so to AT&T, it just looks like your not tethering.
The only time Tetheringmanager sends any info, is when your tethering, so with the APK killed, it's not sending anything.
Your in the clear. ^^
I've been AP teathering with both my old cappy and this infuse for as long as I have been able to.an other than the occasional question about how I can use 12gigs in one month on my phone, they are none the wiser. I live out in the sticks where our internet options are satellite, dial up and mobile internet. My wife and I both used to use aircards until I discovered wifi-teather (on my 2.1 cappy). Now my wife has a Dell Streak, stock not rooted, running 2.2 and teathering (also unlimited data). The kids love it because now the ps3 hooks to the internet as well as their phones and laptops.
I wish I did not have to root to use mobile AP (who am I kidding I love rooting and flashing)

It seems T-Mobile has cracked down on tethering these last few days. Mine stopped working during a download (I get the T-Mobile splash screen now), my roommate, who has a My Touch 4G running CM7, had his stop working yesterday.
I've gotten the same results from a couple other T-Mobile users. What a pain, it should be a crime having them charge us for the ability to use the bandwidth that we already pay for.
if you have the 5gb $25 data plan you get hotspot included, just call them up and tell them you want the 5gb hotspot promotion... unless you are on a cheaper plan of course.
Thanks, this worked great!
I'm on the Sensation, I had installed apn manager and found that there was a hidden apn named tmobile tether and instead of epc.tmobile.com it had pcweb.tmobile.com instead. One of our chefs has since then erased this hidden apn and all is well.

Try open garden, the one that looks like a tree, you'll need it on both devices and it creates a mesh network, some caviets are apps tha use data wont work, so you have to do everything through your web browser. This solution also solves the screen off issue while tethering.
As of right now this has been removed or blocked in the newest update.
There is nothing yet been found to allow you to set your own APN again.
You can use wifi tethering with FoxFi as a workaround from foxfi.com/bin but for data to work over wifi tethering you will need to keep the screen on.
That is about the only workaround.

Or use open garden and it makes a mesh network, data still flows with screen off, you'll need open garden on both devices. The only issue is apps that use data like the play store will say your not connected, but anything you want to do with the browser you can.
I know not perfect but thats the closest we have right now, besides keeping the screen on.

Changing the UA(user-agent) is just one of the few obstacles to overcome. The main problem is the tmo OTA update now prevents/locks us from entering the APN needed to bypass/trick the t-mobile tethering check.

We already do pay for it with our monthly contracts, we are allowed x amount of data per month, we go over it and the speed of data isn't even worth tethering. Do they give us money back on the data we don't use? No they don't, so why can't we use the data we pay for any way we want, it's not like data for a tablet costs more or anything like that, it's just greed on the providers end plain and simple.
I just ended up talking to an agent about my bill and I brought up the fact that I couldn't tether anymore, so they put that back on free of charge. I mean hell I'm already paying a decent amount monthly and I have the 5 gig package (which used to be advertised with transforming your device to a hotspot), there is no reason to ask for more other than greed?

I also have a 5 gig plan and the hotspot is supposed to be free, but my 5 gig plan is old and the only way for me to get the hotspot is for me to give up unlimited messaging, which I then would have to pay $15 a month for, umm, yeah, they got me coming and going. BLAH
I work for tmo, and we do give it for free with the 5 & 10gb plans.

Using other roms i can tether temporarally. Well, i get a push message to stop asap or risk losing access. (Im on that unlimited plan.) so i stop. It does work though tethering to my nexus 7, im assuming because it shows it being a mobile device vs. desktop.
The default rom pushes all tethering through pcweb.tmobile.com which depending on your rate plan, determines if you get tether access. custom roms shouldn't have this setup.
I also have a Nexus 7 and the unlimited plan. I'm rooted on the S1 (no ROMs loaded yet) and am now trying to figure out where to go from here.

Name it whatever you want and set the APN to epc.tmobile.com. this should bypass tmobile's tethering block.

If you're not on an unlimited plan, tethering isn't any extra. It's only an additional fee if you're still on unlimited (because Verizon sucks). Unless if you haven't changed your plan since they put that policy in place...and if you haven't, well, do so.
If you're overseas on a GSM carrier, why would you be using a Verizon device? Especially since the Dev Edition is available and can be S-OFF'd easily.

From what I understood, unless if you're still on a grandfathered plan of any type (maybe specifically unlimited data grandfathered, I'm not sure), wifi tethering is supposed to be free. Unless if you have proof otherwise, I'm going to stick with my belief.
That being said, I still have unlimited data, and I'm only going to give it up when they pry it out of my cold, dead fingers, so regardless of their actual policies, it doesn't affect me. Besides, now that we have S-Off and full root, free tethering should be relatively simple once someone figures out how to do it, if it hasn't already been solved.

Huh, I had no idea you could do it with a simple terminal command like that. I bought sqlite editor to do it... lol
Anyway, this works for me on T-Mobile. I personally used SQLite Editor from Speed Software and added "tether_dun_required = 0" to the global table in /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db. Other people have reported that you also need to do something to mask the traffic from your PC (using a different useragent) but I've had no issues using my PC as-is.

Gotcha. My cycle just ended yesterday too. Would have been a good time to try. If it doesn't work, would the worst thing just be that I have no tethering til next month?

Yeah, since your plan comes with 3GB (or 5GB, if you're on the $30 data feature) of tethering they're not going to bust you for tethering, they just cut you off when you hit the limit. And if you later get it working properly you'll get your tethering back. I forgot to change the setting once after flashing a ROM and got cut off, but as soon as I set it back tethering was working again.
You can also just install the MyAccount app so that you can check if it is counting as tethering usage as you go. Unfortunately the website doesn't list tethering usage, only the app.

I have 2.5 because I'm on the grandfathered simple choice. I'll try it out. Thanks! Do you know if upload and download are counted separately somehow? I just remember back when I had my S3 and didn't have a tethering plan at all I used one of those rooted tethering apps. It let me use it for a while but as soon as I started uploading videos I got cut off.

You are the second person to suggest that... Is there really no free option?

I'm a T-Mo customer w/ the unlimited option, and have been using this w/ no issues for the last 2 months. Both for my tablet, laptop and PS3..

Awesome I'll try that out.
Do I need to change any APN settings?
Edit: it does not seem to be working.. Tmobile is detecting the tether.

This works, read the reviews, I use it every day and have tethered over 30GB this month with my T-Mo unlimited plan.

Okay the free option didn't work for me... I guess I can try this.
Is there any set up required to get it to work?
edit: followed instructions on app page.. seems to be working
I had my tether up ot 2.9GB and it has stopped there.. while my phone data goes up.
I used SQ editor and did the the "tether_dun_required" method with a value set at 0. I have T-Mobile unlimited 4G LTE plan and use this as my home connection. So far I have used 79.66 GB of unlimited data lol
