I was unlocked on JB and went with the kk ota. I now want to go back to JB. Can I restore from an old 4.1 backup. I was using a different version of twrp when making the backup.

you can defiantly go back, i just dont know what will happen as far as twrp is concerned.
seems like at some point you would have a compatibility issue with the old software and the new twrp.
but i never tried it, therefore i didnt post to help you with inaccurate information.
there is a guide in my sig (skip down to the relevant parts), that will get you back to jb, but it is a proven method and doesnt involve restoring any backups.
Thanks for the response. I saw the guide. I'm just not that familiar with rsd. Thought restoring an old backup would be much simpler if it would work.

You can't restore an old backup. You can flash back to stock JB, but at that point, you cannot use any of the old ROMs as they need the old JB bootloader, which is now running the KK bootloader. That is in a trusted partition that you cannot downgrade at all. So, trying to use old JB-based ROMs will no longer work. So, if you were planning on going back to a JB-based custom ROM, it won't work from what I know once you have upgrade to KK.
But, if you want to go back to stock JB, then yes, that is possible.
You can use SamuriHL's RSD Flasher (which is in beta) -> http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/48904-rsd-flasher-beta-windows-only/
Or, you can use his House of Moto tool which is here -> http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/28162-house-of-moto-25/
He lists the instructions in both posts, so read, read and re-read a third time before you even attempt to flash back to JB. Three readings usually causes the light bulb to finally go off and it ensures you understand everything. If at that point you don't understand, then ask questions (and be sure you state you read it three times). Usually, people who do read three times figure it out and have no issues.
That's your only option at this point or stay on KK.
So there's no way to go back to the JB bootloader?

Like i said, no. It's in a trusted zone. You'll still have the KK bootloader installed, but you'll be able to flash back to stock JB and boot that.
You might be able to make it work, but as @bweN diorD stated, it's not a proven method to flash back to old ROMs nor use old nandroid backups.
I myself use Titanium Backup Pro to backup my apps and data and that works fine.

First off I have to say this is my first post here. I am a long time user of these forums and I cannot praise them for all the great stuff here. I have used them for my Galaxy Nexus and now my Nexus 4. However, my wife's One S is having some problems.
With the OTA of JB it started to act funny, losing and disabling WiFi. So naturally I decided to root the phone and try some other ROMs and see how that worked out. I did take a nan droid backup at almost every step, except just before I rooted it. I attempted to send it back for repair and they denied it saying the phone was tampered, naturally.
I would like to try running it on stock rom, but I do not have the ruu and do not have a nandroid backup before I rooted it. My rooted nandroid back is throwing errors on start up and generally acting not very nice.
Anyone having a bell stock nandroid willing to share with me would be appreciated. I wish I never did the ota of jb... Hind sight is always 20-20 I guess.
Any help would be appreciated.

Tell you what, I have the same problem and even the same carrier phone, BELL HTC One S.
The missing RUU for JB is such a pain. Though I didn't face any problems with WiFi or data connection.
I have rooted my phone and don't have a pre-root nandroid backup.
But here is what you can do to bring it back top stock ICS/JB.
1. S-OFF using moonshine method. (It supports BELL firmware 3.16.666.9 JB)
2. Run an ICS RUU which is present there for BELL.
Afterwards, you can decide whether you want to stay on ICS or update to JB via OTA on phone. Then you can make a nandroid backup too and S-ON back again.
Good luck.

I was not aware we had a method to s-off once we moved to jb. I'll look into that. Thank you!
Is it worthwhile to super cid, then?

No no, we don't need to superCID at all. And i would definitely advise against it for any reason add many people have reported bricks with SuperCID. Moonshine method is good, try that.
Though it has been reported successful with Ubuntu and other Linux distro's more often than with windows. HTC Sync Manager poses problem.
Study the thread, you'll get ample info.
Good luck

You might also want to study this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2164783 thread.
Couple of guys recently reported they had success flashing the OTA.zip which is available for BELL JB. The guide is for the S3 variant but the principle is same since you are on stock JellyBean.
Though if you want to revert to ICS you have to follow the method I advised in my previous post.

From how I understand it, there really isn't a way to back out of it now. If you want to have the ability to unlock the bootloader and/or root, I would highly recommend doing it now. It doesn't take very much time at all: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307439
Also, after you root and unlock make sure to use a root keeper before taking the update (otherwise you will have to reinstall the system/ROM it to get root back). Good luck!

I rooted mine a while back and didn't get any available updates (maybe because I went to aosp based ROMs soon after?) so was no need to use a rootkeeper app.

You didn't get an update because you're not on the stock ROM you're on whatever AOSP ROM. The OTAs only apply to phones that are still on the stock ROM. Custom ROMs like yours generally come rooted so a root keeper is not necessary since when you upgrade to a newer version or a different ROM, it too will be pre-rooted.
You're welcome, others have helped me a lot, so I"m just passing it on!
Just wanted to add, if you wanted to put off unlocking for some reason, you can just root it and use titanium backup to freeze the updater. Then it'll quit nagging you/her.

I used a utility a while back from Dj bliss that was literally a 1 click unlock and 1 clock root. I'll probably do that up. Rooted, unlocked... It all voids warranty right? What's benefits to rooting only without unlocking. . I know she doesn't care much about custom kernels. In fact, she doesn't care about any of this stuff... But I figure having the ability to still root is important to me. I made the mistake of taking an update a while back and waiting to root. Screwed me up for a while till they found that latest exploit. Was kicking myself for weeks.
Thanks for all the replies.

Very simplistically, root allows you to install apps that work deep within the system (like titanium backup - being able to freeze Verizon bloat, etc.). Unlocking allows you to install different ROMs allowing you to come up to android 4.2.2 and configure your system a lot.

Verizon is pushing the update to all phone using a schedule of sorts. Think it goes by areas maybe states.
To stop the annoying 'update now' messages, freeze updater.apk using Titanium. Since the update fixes the 'unlock bootloader' exploit, you should unlock now if you are considering that avenue.
Just replaced Samsung Galaxy Nexus with this razor. Should be a step up right? Apparently I'm spoiled. Wife has the bionic so I'm familiar with the basic process.
Doing research, resetting the device like 15 times and reading a ton of threads in the last couple days, it looks like I have the phone itself actually rooted however I'm not able to fully install safe strap.
What's interesting to me is that I can use programs that require root access far as I can tell with no issue, root checker shows root is available as well. Trying to reboot into recovery though does not give me the safety strap splash screen to choose any kind of recovery option. Just rolls into DROID...
Is this pretty normal if the previous owner accepted the OTA update to take me to 9.18.79? Are we stuck?

Sure did. Says installed and from all the videos I've seen explaining the install/usage and my wife phone installation, I'm quite sure it's installed.
I've tried multiple versions just to be sure clearing data and uninstalling previous versions etc.
At this point I'm just not sure if this is normal or not because of the OTA version that's on here.

Just wondering, it wasn't clear, are you on the 9.18.79 build or not sure? A screen shot of your "about phone" screen could tell unless someone rolled back. Only reason I ask is, safest rap is great if there are no options but unlocked is where the real profit is.

are you sure its not already unlocked?
if you havent already, i would flash back to clean stock, not just wipe/"reset", and try again. wiping wont get rid of or fix anything in the system directory.
First off don't attempt to flash any aftermarket recovery if your BL is locked, you might run into issues. Second, SafeStrap doesn't replace your stock recovery because you can't replace your stock recovery if you have a locked BL. To get into SS, just boot your phone normally. Once the phone boots, you'll get the SS screen that allows you to go into SS recovery or boot into OS normally. Once in SS, then you can start running backups, flashing, etc.
i didnt see anyone suggest he flash a stock recovery.
he got the phone used, maybe its already unlocked, i didnt see that possibility confirmed or denied.

Planning to go back to stock stock, beyond the wipe. I believe a previous poster mentioned that the standard wipe doesn't remove root. A fresh start may be my next step. Hoping the 1.32 Droid Razr Utility by Mattlgrof http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2474393 will do that for me.

np, i did update it a few times, but working 6 days a week, i dont feel like messing with the root right now.

Grns did mention that he might try flashing PhilZ recovery, that's why I said what I did. His OP also mentioned that the previous owner took the latest OTA, so it's highly probably that he's locked up (though, not 100% certain). I'm only suggesting these things in advance, so that he doesn't run into problems.
As for your SS issues, that's kind of weird. You should get the options as soon as the phone boots up.

I think you're stuck with what you have. I would immediately make a backup of the ROM you have now, just in case. I know I feel more comfortable having a stock ROM on my SD, just in case something happens. So, if I were you, I would find a stock ROM and just throw it on the SD.
so this is equivalent to odin and samsung right? find your phone's firmware on sbf.droid...and rsdlite is the way to flash. these are pure stock right...with all the rogers bloatware for instance?

I guess it would be a matter of opinion. A lot of people prefer to fastboot over flashing in recovery. By that, I mean flashing through ADB. I don't know much about it (still learning), but I think you can flash a .zip with ADB and this eliminates having to save it to the phone, etc. I think devs use this method a lot. I need to get more comfortable with ADB before I start doing this. As for RSD, you can only flash .xml files. Most of the ROMs that are in .xml format are purely stock ROMs. I know there's a way to convert .zip to .zip.xml but I don't know how. Also, RSD seems to always cause issues. I used RSD to restore my M and it failed three times, for no apparent reason. I pushed it again and it worked on the fourth try.
That's what I thought. And I've had the same experiences with ADB. Thank you for your help and quick responses. I'm still learning as well, and its nice to have input from someone with more experience. Much appreciated.

Hello all!
First off, I did a search of the forums and didn't see anything related to my question, so here goes.
I have the Droid MAXX Developer Edition with a Motorola unlocked bootloader. I was on Android 4.2.2 and rooted. Well, yesterday my wife accidently clicked on "Yes" to update my phone to the new OTA update. This sent my phone into a boot loop. I connected my phone to the PC and Moto Media Manager downloaded and repaired the software on my phone. So now I have Android 4.4 and no root.
I am wondering if I can roll back the ROM to 4.2.2 using RSDLite and the appropriate SBF file? If not, is there anything that I can do to get back to 4.2.2 and root? Or can I root 4.4 and get my Wifi tether back?
Anyone else attempted this on a Developer phone?
Thanks a bunch!
John
Root 4.4 the same way just get the correct twrp. You can roll back but there are risks

OK, thanks for the info!
Anyone else have any experience with this issue? I don't see how/why I cannot go back to previous versions of Android as long as I have the correct image file. I mean, this is the whole reason that I purchased the Development Edition of the phone, so that I wouldn't have to worry about flashing forward or backward.
Comments or thoughts?
just flash the 4.2.2 image and you are good to go
If the device has been on KK 4.4_19.5.3 then flashing back will be somewhat complicated.. RSDLite will work also..if one removes the (flash partition gpt.bin) line in 4.2.2_12.15.15 XML file..or RSDLite will give a failure notice..if one is the flash back to 4.2.2 from 4.4..using adb commands..one can skip the (fastboot flash partition gpt.bin) if not..errors will display..no harm done thow.. because, again, once on KK, the (gpt.bin) cannot be overwritten by a downgrade version..this is what I have found..research for second opinion ofcourse.

One would assume, that if you downgraded to 12.15.15 and then took an OTA to 4.4 you'd be safe although I wonder if it would bootloop as the OTA wouldn't find the bootloader and gpt.bin it was expecting to find. I'll not test it to find out though as I've hard bricked one of these phones already :silly:

Thanks for the info guys! I will try downgrading to 4.2.2 this weekend. I'll probabbly try ADB first and if that doesn't work, then I'll try RSDLite. I will report back here once I have completed the process.
Thanks again for the info and responses!

Sir..if you are on 4.4_19.5.3 with your DEV..and wish to revert back to 4.2.2_12.15.15..I have created a modified FXZ..that will do that for you..using RSDLite..I personally prefer to use RSDLite..alot simpler..just a few clicks and RSDLite does the rest..but one must have a modified FXZ to revert..but adb works great if one is experienced with the commands and their way around adb..but since I test a lot..and flash back and forth alot after testing, a particular modification to the FXZ is alot simpler for me..

Friend.. On the FXZ page on the left, two options in red..two options in blue..just download which one you need..then RSDLite the FXZ to your device..
If you are unsure..PM and I will help..you can use either of the four on the left side..for example..if you wish to NOT erase your data, and you wish to install TWRP..then choose the bottom blue one..I have them named for what the fuction of that FXZ is..anotherwords..the one I mention here will NOT erase data and cache, and it will install TWRP for you automatically.. Then you will need the SuperUS apk, which I have also posted just below this left list, compatible with JB..the far right hand list does the same things..but for KK instead of JB..

Well Friend..Did you use one of my FXZ's.?
ALSO..I wish not to influence your exact decision on whether you keep on 4.2.2_12.15.15 or go to KK..each user has a specific trait, specific apps, and ways of doing things..KK may be great for some, JB for others, I only give you my personal opinion, according to my user traits, I use MicroSD cards constantly, switching back and forth between cards..I have found that KK 4.4_19.5.3 does not have this capability without adding an app..BUT..JB 4.2.2_12.15.15 does in fact do very well with the MicroSD cards..and there are a few other functions/things that I prefer JB over KK..but again, just my user traits and opinion..
But the beauty of it all..with a DEV model..if you don't like KK..then go back to JB..no harm done, except for the fact that some of KK will always be on your device..but..we can't stay on JB forever either..SO..just remember, you cannot use the stock FXZ to go back to JB..because a factory FXZ will fail to revert back to JB..a modified FXZ one must have to revert back..those on my page are just for that purpose..and also auto install TWRP if one wish's..otherwize, one needs a higher level of adb command understanding to revert back..
I do not particularly like to use the term downgrade, because at this point, going back to JB to me, is not a downgrade..lol..to me an upgrade should be better..and in time, KK will be an upgrade, but my opinion only..
SORRY thread for getting abit off topic..
Anyhow..what we mention here may help someone else, beings the limited XT1080M threads..especially the DEV model..

Yes Sir..I mean..plug into the device charge port an external MicroSD card..with JB works great..KK never detects the card..an add-on app must be installed for KK to use the MicroSD card..
Even with the available add on apps..it feels cheap..and file manipulation is alot more difficult..
Just me thow..

I saw Samsung issuing a statement about external storage use in the s4 about the 4.4 update as well. So appears as if Google is doing there very best to eliminate all external storage. Not that we didn't know this was coming for quite some time now.

So, I flashed the MOD_CFC-obake-maxx_verizon-user-4.2.2-12.15.15-Verizon-US.xml file using RSDLite that you provided from your site. Well, the flash went well but now I cannot get into my device because the encrypted password no longer works. Any idea on why this is and how to fix it?
TIA!!!
***EDIT***
I fixed my issue at the suggestion of another XDA member. The command that I ran from ADB was fastboot erase userdata. This erased my user data, to include the encryption of the partition tables.
