[Q] Droid MAXX DE OTA update rollback? - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all!
First off, I did a search of the forums and didn't see anything related to my question, so here goes.
I have the Droid MAXX Developer Edition with a Motorola unlocked bootloader. I was on Android 4.2.2 and rooted. Well, yesterday my wife accidently clicked on "Yes" to update my phone to the new OTA update. This sent my phone into a boot loop. I connected my phone to the PC and Moto Media Manager downloaded and repaired the software on my phone. So now I have Android 4.4 and no root.
I am wondering if I can roll back the ROM to 4.2.2 using RSDLite and the appropriate SBF file? If not, is there anything that I can do to get back to 4.2.2 and root? Or can I root 4.4 and get my Wifi tether back?
Anyone else attempted this on a Developer phone?
Thanks a bunch!
John

Root 4.4 the same way just get the correct twrp. You can roll back but there are risks

OK, thanks for the info!
Anyone else have any experience with this issue? I don't see how/why I cannot go back to previous versions of Android as long as I have the correct image file. I mean, this is the whole reason that I purchased the Development Edition of the phone, so that I wouldn't have to worry about flashing forward or backward.
Comments or thoughts?

just flash the 4.2.2 image and you are good to go

If the device has been on KK 4.4_19.5.3 then flashing back will be somewhat complicated.. RSDLite will work also..if one removes the (flash partition gpt.bin) line in 4.2.2_12.15.15 XML file..or RSDLite will give a failure notice..if one is the flash back to 4.2.2 from 4.4..using adb commands..one can skip the (fastboot flash partition gpt.bin) if not..errors will display..no harm done thow.. because, again, once on KK, the (gpt.bin) cannot be overwritten by a downgrade version..this is what I have found..research for second opinion ofcourse.

One would assume, that if you downgraded to 12.15.15 and then took an OTA to 4.4 you'd be safe although I wonder if it would bootloop as the OTA wouldn't find the bootloader and gpt.bin it was expecting to find. I'll not test it to find out though as I've hard bricked one of these phones already :silly:

Thanks for the info guys! I will try downgrading to 4.2.2 this weekend. I'll probabbly try ADB first and if that doesn't work, then I'll try RSDLite. I will report back here once I have completed the process.
Thanks again for the info and responses!

Sir..if you are on 4.4_19.5.3 with your DEV..and wish to revert back to 4.2.2_12.15.15..I have created a modified FXZ..that will do that for you..using RSDLite..I personally prefer to use RSDLite..alot simpler..just a few clicks and RSDLite does the rest..but one must have a modified FXZ to revert..but adb works great if one is experienced with the commands and their way around adb..but since I test a lot..and flash back and forth alot after testing, a particular modification to the FXZ is alot simpler for me..

Friend.. On the FXZ page on the left, two options in red..two options in blue..just download which one you need..then RSDLite the FXZ to your device..
If you are unsure..PM and I will help..you can use either of the four on the left side..for example..if you wish to NOT erase your data, and you wish to install TWRP..then choose the bottom blue one..I have them named for what the fuction of that FXZ is..anotherwords..the one I mention here will NOT erase data and cache, and it will install TWRP for you automatically.. Then you will need the SuperUS apk, which I have also posted just below this left list, compatible with JB..the far right hand list does the same things..but for KK instead of JB..

Well Friend..Did you use one of my FXZ's.?
ALSO..I wish not to influence your exact decision on whether you keep on 4.2.2_12.15.15 or go to KK..each user has a specific trait, specific apps, and ways of doing things..KK may be great for some, JB for others, I only give you my personal opinion, according to my user traits, I use MicroSD cards constantly, switching back and forth between cards..I have found that KK 4.4_19.5.3 does not have this capability without adding an app..BUT..JB 4.2.2_12.15.15 does in fact do very well with the MicroSD cards..and there are a few other functions/things that I prefer JB over KK..but again, just my user traits and opinion..
But the beauty of it all..with a DEV model..if you don't like KK..then go back to JB..no harm done, except for the fact that some of KK will always be on your device..but..we can't stay on JB forever either..SO..just remember, you cannot use the stock FXZ to go back to JB..because a factory FXZ will fail to revert back to JB..a modified FXZ one must have to revert back..those on my page are just for that purpose..and also auto install TWRP if one wish's..otherwize, one needs a higher level of adb command understanding to revert back..
I do not particularly like to use the term downgrade, because at this point, going back to JB to me, is not a downgrade..lol..to me an upgrade should be better..and in time, KK will be an upgrade, but my opinion only..
SORRY thread for getting abit off topic..
Anyhow..what we mention here may help someone else, beings the limited XT1080M threads..especially the DEV model..

Yes Sir..I mean..plug into the device charge port an external MicroSD card..with JB works great..KK never detects the card..an add-on app must be installed for KK to use the MicroSD card..
Even with the available add on apps..it feels cheap..and file manipulation is alot more difficult..

I saw Samsung issuing a statement about external storage use in the s4 about the 4.4 update as well. So appears as if Google is doing there very best to eliminate all external storage. Not that we didn't know this was coming for quite some time now.

So, I flashed the MOD_CFC-obake-maxx_verizon-user-4.2.2-12.15.15-Verizon-US.xml file using RSDLite that you provided from your site. Well, the flash went well but now I cannot get into my device because the encrypted password no longer works. Any idea on why this is and how to fix it?
TIA!!!
***EDIT***
I fixed my issue at the suggestion of another XDA member. The command that I ran from ADB was fastboot erase userdata. This erased my user data, to include the encryption of the partition tables.

do i need to remove cwm bootstrap before doing the ics ota?

So we know that the ics ota is is coming soon. In on stock rooted 2.3.6. I know you don't have to uproot to do it, but I did (for some reason) install bootstrap and bootstrapped my recovery. Is there anything I need to do with that before the ota or is that good to leave as well since it's not actually flashed? If so could you tell me or link me to a guide? (Sorry if this has been asked couldn't find anything on it)

Your best bet is to fxz to a full 100% stock load before any OTA. We already have root so losing root is only for during the update, I know it does not check for root, but it is safer to just be 100% stock off of the fxz.
If you are on the ICS leak, I have several people testing the fix I have made and I am hopeful to have it released to everyone in the next couple of days.

I'm not worried about root, but man last time I attempted an fxz I got extremely confused and ended up just exchanging my phone... Well shoot. I believe most phones can do OTA's with root, just not sure about that whole bootstrap and I still have all the stock (non-uninstallable) at&crap apps.

You HAVE to remove bootstrap, the log wrapper link in /system/bin and also remove the hijack file in /system/bin and move logwrapper.bin to logwrapper also in /system/bin. All of this can be done from root explorer. Then reboot. If not done correctly you will bootloop. The fxz is way easier and I have a scripted version that does not require rsdlite.

Will the scripted version work from 2.3.6 ti 2.3.5? Also will I run into all those CG errors and whatnot with it? So so sorry for my annoyance and ignorance but I guess that will help me learn.

You have no ignorance, no worries... questions are what this place is for and so you can learn.
Yes I have script for both 2.3.6 and another for ICS.
Not sure if you will have the cg error or not. Usually you get that from flashing the incorrect fxz. If you tell me which version of the phone you have and your correct location, I might be able to put a "special" one together for.
Or if you bought an att phone but live in India then you might have to flash the att fxz and then give cogeary's international rom a try.

Any way to return to 4.0.4 or 4.11 ?

You can use RSD lite to flash back to stock (ICS or JB) Read more here.
There's a few TWRP backups floating around... Not sure if anyone has uploaded any CWM backups...

RSD Lite won't allow me to flash anything but 4.1.2, it gives the error:
=
Code:
Flashed flashing process. 1/23 flash partition "gpt_main0.bin"-> Phone returned FAIL.
Long story short I am attempting to move carriers on a phone I bought off of ebay. To do that I need to "find" something.
Originally, I was rooted, unlocked and had CWM with an external backup.
I got stuck trying to RSD Lite back down to 4.0.4 and to RSD Lite back to stock 4.1.2. I'm thinking that I will get root again, install TWRP, create backup, TWRP back to ICS, get the thing I am looking for, TWRP back to 4.1.2, RSD Lite back to 4.1.2, reroot, install CWM and use an older CWM backup on my SD card to get back to the start. After that I plan to use an NV writer/reader and QPST to finish this.

You get that flash gpt error when trying to flash the JB FXZ image? Were you using the right one?
Either way, depending on where you are the legality of what you want to do is questionable and not welcome on XDA... Just FYI.

Yes, the stock FXZ 4.0.4 file in RSD Lite 6.1.5, gaah I hate that I can't post/edit for 5 minutes.
Hey, chrisngod posted the MSL reader in this very Photon Q forum. I'm not the first nor am I the last to move carriers. The only difference is I actually paid for the phone and I don't intend to sell it to anyone else. In terms of moral ground I don't think anyone here at xda should complain.

I see you're just going to attack my comment about you doing potentially illegal things.
nvram, qpst, etc... are questionably legal stuff, let's not argue about it.
You should be able to use the RSD Lite application to flash JB. If you are downgrading to ICS, there's some additional lines which you have to remove from the XML file.
Make sure you are using a new version of RSD (6.0+)

Theoretically wouldn't using TWRP to downgrade to ICS not require anything other than root?
Part of the problem is I cant post or edit for five minutes between each reply. That makes this discussion difficult.
I think in general my original question refers to something that is perfectly legal. It could easily be said that modifying the user experience of any computer product at all is illegal take for instance anything Apple. Up until 2012 it was commonly stated that even unlocking a phone could be illegal. Axiomatically anyone may legally program their legally owned phone. This is an entire forum dedicated to hacking/creating useability out of legally purchased merchandise. Consider the first thread in the general forum which is physically adding a sim card slot to the phone to able to change carriers at will. I think it's a tad bit silly to approach things thinking the user intends to something illegal or with malice.

My point is, don't discuss it. Drop it.
Use RSD to restore to stock JB. Enjoy.
Edit - you can restore any backups you find, and down/upgrade at will. If you find the backup for ICS, I think there is one for TWRP floating around.

Are you trying to get JB or ICS with RSD?
JB should work no problems. Downgrading to ICS, there's an additional set of lines to remove from the XML file. I'll try to dig them up and have Skrilax post it in his thread.
Good luck with TWRP.

gpt_main0 can't be downgraded. Remove its line from the 4.0.4 FXZ XML file so RSD Lite does not try to flash it. Then you should be able to flash the 4.0.4 FXZ over 4.1.2 on phone just fine.

It's already quite some time ago when I needed to do it (from JB to ICS via RSD Lite), so I don't remember the exact edits, but it worked fine for me in the end.
The simple general rule is - when there is an error, remove the related line from the XML file and try it again .

Yep. I still want to mention it to Skrilax_CZ - he should add this edit to his OP, a lot of people are asking about this one.
Thanks for pointing it out tho

This worked. Thank you for your help. I guess this was a little more simple than I thought it would be. It also had an odd side effect of completely changing the programming and the MSL for anyone else remotely interested.

[Q] Upgraded my unrooted Maxx to 4.4. Any way to root?

Pretty much all I want to do is root my Droid Maxx so I change the status bar icons to white. I held off on rooting since I figured the 4.4 update would change them, much like the Moto X's. But they're surprisingly still blue and now with the transparency it looks like an amateur half-Jelly Bean/half KitKat theme...
Is there any way I can root this phone now so I can install xposed or GravityBox or something? I apologize if this has been asked before.

No, there's no way to root with 4.4 until an exploit is discovered. Moto X users have the ability to downgrade back to 4.2.2, root, and then update to 4.4 with SlapMyMoto. But I've been seeing those with Droids attempting the downgrade and having big problems...so I personally wouldn't attempt this until someone confirms it's relatively safe. You may be out of luck until an exploit is found.

Correct, completely out of luck. My phone is unable to uninstall anything because I partially flashed 4.2.2 and there's no 4.4 FXZ yet.

JCases's instructions for Rooting 4.4 with SlapMyMoto clearly state that you have to root prior to taking the 4.4 update as there is no way to downgrade.
So has anyone been able to upgrade their MAXX to Kit Kat and keep root? If so, can you post step-by-step instructions here? Even though the OP says it's good for rooted and unrooted versions, I want to make sure I can keep root.
Thanks

Technically, there not a current root method for 4.4 on the Droid series.

This is what I did and it worked fine
1) make sure you run the exploit for permanant write protection off I did it by installing stock recovery then ran the exploit since I was already rooted
2) I then did a full fxz of 4.2.2 after saving all my data like app backups and photos etc.
3) I then ran slap my moto which pushed the necessary files you will need once you take the update.
4) after slap my moto install the update which should be on your SD card.
5) run the rest of slap my moto adb shell commands toggle blue tooth then reboot and you are rooted.
A few things I noticed or had a problem with but it didn't matter but I will disclose so your but doesn't pucker up.
Make sure the update you down load is not zipped in another file. Meaning it is just the update.zip the one I downloaded was the update.zip zipped in a folder and the update failed. It still worked after I unzipped and put just the update on the SD card.
The rest of the way instructions are easy I ran each adb shell command a separate and waited for the phone to reboot. Guess what it doesn't reboot itself you have to manually reboot. I thought I rab the commands wrong so I did it 3 times till I said what the hell and just rebooted myself.
What I'm trying to get at is this is a very forgiving exploit. If you prepare your phone properly before hand. Once the initial slap my moto commands are run everything is in place unless you fxz. I rebooted 3 times after that do to the issue with the update not being unzipped out of the folder. I ran the adb shell 3 times and it didn't screw anything up.
One more thing I can't stress this enough I know I talked about the update being unzipped from the folder do not confuse that with unzipping the update. The update itself has to be zipped to work.
Step 1: Buy dev edition and install 4.4
Step 2: unlock bootloader
Step 3: flash twrp for 4.4
Step 4: boot into twrp. When you try to exit twrp it'll notice you're not rooted and ask you if you'd like root. Swipe accept for win.
Step 5: profit

Thank you sir, I always search. I just didn't search in the right place. I started in the General Thread and completely forgot about going to the Development thread after getting caught up with the posts in there.

you used TWRP version twrp-2.6.3.1-ghost-4.4.img? Just making sure, I found that over on the moto x forums.
Yeah that'll work fine.

If you are still on 4.4 (19.x.x), then follow the steps outlined by arcanexvi.
You will have to unlock bootloader by paying $25 for Sunshine app.

No. But that is your only chance for unlocking boot loader.
So, go ahead and get that.

Attempted to downgrade and now brick?

I originally had andriod 4.4.2 on my maxx hd. Read a few articles and found that it was capable of being rooted using tr.adk with moto_pocalypse. Did it and it work fine. I attempted to try to install twrp but wasn't able to find a easy way so i decided to run Razr HD Utility 1.34 to try and bring the phone back to 4.1.2. Now i am stuck in a loop with the motorola boot screen. I assume i confuse the phone with a bootloader and it cant find the correct file. Can anyone recommend a fix? I was able to flash TWRP with fastboot but it doesn't do me any good. I still have capability to fastboot.
It says right at the top of the utility post in big red writing, you can not use this utility to downgrade from kk to jb.
Look for my tutorial (guide) in the general forum for instructions on how to fix your phone.

I couldn't find a specific instruction on brick device but i attempted to used RSD and your image VRZ_XT926_9.8.1Q-94-1_CFC.xml. RSD failed. Can you point me to a better link for more specifics?

Since you are on KK, you cannot flash the tz or gpt partitions back to a previous version, so that could be part of your issue. Your best bet is to reflash the phone back to stock KK first.
Also, when on KK, did you ever switch from Dalvik to ART? If so, you have to reformat the data partition which means you lose everything on it. Switching to ART reformats the data partition and it is no longer compatible with previous versions of Android. It reformats it but preserves your data. I believe if you switch back to ART, it still doesn't reformat it, so you still have to format it, but you want to switch back to ART first before downgrading.
What should have happened was, before you attempted to downgrade was to revert back to dalvik, back up your data and then reformat the data partition. THEN, you could have downgraded using the universal script in SamuriHL's House of Moto tools. That's what you should be using.
Next time, instead of being creative, you should really research things and if you have any questions, ask before doing it to avoid bricking your device.
Even with an unlocked bootloader, you could still brick your device permanently if you do something completely wrong (like flash the incorrect image for your phone). I've seen many people flash images to their XT926 that were not even for the XT926 (I believe I read one guy who flash an XT926 with an XT925 or something like that) and that pretty much was the end of it. An expensive paperweight.
Hopefully, the link helps.

Going back to JB.

I was unlocked on JB and went with the kk ota. I now want to go back to JB. Can I restore from an old 4.1 backup. I was using a different version of twrp when making the backup.

you can defiantly go back, i just dont know what will happen as far as twrp is concerned.
seems like at some point you would have a compatibility issue with the old software and the new twrp.
but i never tried it, therefore i didnt post to help you with inaccurate information.
there is a guide in my sig (skip down to the relevant parts), that will get you back to jb, but it is a proven method and doesnt involve restoring any backups.
Thanks for the response. I saw the guide. I'm just not that familiar with rsd. Thought restoring an old backup would be much simpler if it would work.

You can't restore an old backup. You can flash back to stock JB, but at that point, you cannot use any of the old ROMs as they need the old JB bootloader, which is now running the KK bootloader. That is in a trusted partition that you cannot downgrade at all. So, trying to use old JB-based ROMs will no longer work. So, if you were planning on going back to a JB-based custom ROM, it won't work from what I know once you have upgrade to KK.
But, if you want to go back to stock JB, then yes, that is possible.
You can use SamuriHL's RSD Flasher (which is in beta) -> http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/48904-rsd-flasher-beta-windows-only/
Or, you can use his House of Moto tool which is here -> http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/28162-house-of-moto-25/
He lists the instructions in both posts, so read, read and re-read a third time before you even attempt to flash back to JB. Three readings usually causes the light bulb to finally go off and it ensures you understand everything. If at that point you don't understand, then ask questions (and be sure you state you read it three times). Usually, people who do read three times figure it out and have no issues.
That's your only option at this point or stay on KK.
So there's no way to go back to the JB bootloader?

Like i said, no. It's in a trusted zone. You'll still have the KK bootloader installed, but you'll be able to flash back to stock JB and boot that.
You might be able to make it work, but as @bweN diorD stated, it's not a proven method to flash back to old ROMs nor use old nandroid backups.
I myself use Titanium Backup Pro to backup my apps and data and that works fine.
