Has anyone else seen the new official Ubuntu for phones that's coming out? It looks rather nice. I can't wait to be able to try it.

Looks great but I wouldn't count on running that on a thunderbolt....ever.
They've tried this before with Ubuntu for Android. It never got off the ground. They intended on dual booting Ubuntu on dual core gingerbread class phones but it never happened. There was supposed to be a dock that your phone went into and booted Linux on a monitor so it was like having a phone and computer at the same time. I like the idea of having full Linux support though. It will be interesting to see if calling through Ubuntu will be supported.

Same here. It almost looked to me like they intend on marketing phones with just this os on it. I really like Linux so I hope they do it. Hopefully since its Linux other distros will be created. It would awesome to have Linux mint like that.

I've never used mint before its always been xubuntu for me. For some reason though i can't get Wi-Fi to work on my laptop. I looked at mint last night, I'll probably get my brother to install it today.
Sent from my ThunderBolt using xda premium
Mint is so much better IMO. It has some features that aren't available with a stock Ubuntu installation plus it looks great. You can install it right on top of Ubuntu.

My brother installed it. I haven't had time to mess with it yet though. OK spent like an hour trying to root someone's tablet. Which would've been easier had it not been a Chinese tablet.

Its not the standard Ubuntu but an actual mobile OS. The gnex version should get released once the CES gets going as they will demonstrate it there.
It looks pimp

Its a mobile version of Ubuntu. Probably won't be anything like the desktop version but since it's Linux other distros can be made for it.

I think it would be excellent to have this on our thunderbolt. It can definitely breathe new life into the phone since development is slowly declining for this. But it's single core so I doubt it will ever be.

Where are you? If you desperately want it just install the .apk, it takes about 10 seconds to do.
I'm in the US another family member on the same contract ( xperia play ) even has it..

That's odd. Try downloading it from here.
Google for "latest playstore apk" Hand install it manual.
For me it worked well.

Im on ICS.. go figure..this doesnt really upset me due to the fact that im getting a new phone ( Droid DNA ) Wednesday!
I don't think it's worth it. The old one looks way more organised and simple. I won't even bother installing the new Store's .apk
Well that's my opinion, you may like it better
Mine just installed automatically when I connected to the wifi.
solution
You have to go to services and clean the cache on the market processes. I had to do that with my droid x a long time ago.
Sometimes it just takes a while. On my phone once, I cleared it and force stopped it several times and it didn't update until a couple hours later.

No. I, too, think the new one looks hideous. Too much like it's trying to be iOS for my taste.

I believe the new one looks hideous, the old one is way better. But of course, we will get used to it in the future (do we have any other choice?).
Anyway, to answer the thread, it depends on the country you are in. Usually, they update per country (if it is available to you).
I was given an HTC Thunderbolt from a friend. She's finally just gotten tired of the Sense BS and how screwed up this phone is as it comes from the manufacturer. I figured, being the tech savvy fellow I am, that I'd root it, unlock the bootloader and install a custom ROM, probably Cyanogenmod as I love their work. .....no dice. I have Windows 8 on a laptop that was given to me by my wife after my Linux machine went to the big computer shop in the sky. After hours of fruitless searches and downloads I broke down and called HTC. What do they tell me? There isn't a driver out there to make Win8 recognize my device. I tried HTC Sync, PDA Net and a million other options.....no dice. I've searched these forums inside and out, I know the rules, I abide by them to the T. But still, no dice. SO I ask the question that I can't seem to find an answer to, has anyone had any luck getting their Thunderbolt recognized in Win8? If so please tell me how.:good:
Your best bet would be to install Windows 7 or use a friend's computer.

AWESOME Idea!....tried it, between HP's Legacy bullcrap and so on I haven't had much luck, I was thinking maybe a VM?

My guess is you do not have the proper usb cable with the data pin in it.
Seeing how you got it second hand, that's my guess as I don't know what cable you have and you didn't mention trying several.
May wanna see about picking one up to eliminate that as the issue, if you haven't explored this already.

So I tried and tried everything with this thunderbolt. Finally I gave up on Windows 8, which I think Windows has too, and dug out my daughters Acer Aspire One and installed Windows 7. Wouldn't ya know it, all went well. Actually all went well with Windows 8 but I must have gotten a bad download when I obtained the RUU to downgrade to Gingerbread. Or maybe it was an operator error, around here there seems to be quite a few. Anyway, I am rooted with S-OFF so let the Flashing commence. I'm gonna look for a CM10 rom, wish me luck. Thank to all that helped, especially the fella who told me to switch cords, always a good idea when having problems.
Good luck finding cm10.2 that has working data...

Hey,
Around July i will have enough budget to buy a new smartphone.
I've been looking at the Oneplus One and I liked it, but I don't know if i should wait to the next fall to buy the next nexus phone (if there is one).
What should I do?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Either should be fine. The most important thing is to wait for reviews before buying any of them.

The next nexus will most likely have a faster processor and wireless charging. If that is important to you then I would wait. Also, I wouldn't put an ounce of faith in Cyanogenmod giving timely updates to the software of the phone. I would be very surprised if they were able to get an update out 6 months after the next version of android is released.

CM builds from AOSP source. They'll have whatever Google updates in just mere hours up to 2 days. CM11 kitkat was out so fast after it was released. Just cause they didn't decide to make a thread on xda right off the bat doesn't mean it wasn't out.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Well, it depends on how they plan on updating it. Are they going to build the nightlies directly for the OnePlus One? Or only release "stable" milestones? Since the site says that it is a customized version of CM you may not get those customized features in nightlies if they are released.

I am sure they will allow you to unlock the phone and flash the CM nightlies if you want same with the nexus. If they were smart, they would know people like us would do that considering that seems to be the market in my opinion. It probably won't have the customized features but I am sure ROM developers will jump on it, especially with all of the CM ROMs floating around.
To the OP: It won't be availble for sometime, you have to be invited to buy it or join the smash deal. But if both phones were available I would definitely get the oneplusone (I was sold on the JBL stereo speakers).

There is a stable version of CM out there? They aren't going to be releasing nightlies for a retail product. There literally still isn't a CM stable out for our phone. The next version of android is a month away and every OEM has already updated their flagships to stable versions of 4.4.2.

I can get upto 50mbps with my extender around my place. The only issue is that it has to be on Channel 7 with all the interference. If I put it on Channel 1 then I barely ever see over 20mbps.I'm going to just run cables again. I rather be hardwired anyways since I'm a gamer.
Yes they are called milestone right now. Before you say oh they have bugs remember we're all waiting on Google to release 4.4.3 to fix a good amount of bugs. one of them being the battery eating camera bug .

Good day. I have read a couple of posts regarding Hotspot and Root for the N7. I am giving my girlfriend my new N7 and Receiving her S6. She is no way electronics savvy. What will be the best and easiest way for me to make Hotspot work on the N7? Does it have to be rooted, or as I saw someone post that Galaxy Tools works permanently. I am nervous about using Super Leaks root method due to many different steps I have never done in the root process.
Thank you for you time.
Blessings

Look for the unlocked hotspot thread. Basically, reboot your phone and immediately turn on the hotspot. Takes a little practice but it works.
