There's a lot of disparate information on how to do this so wanted to share what worked for me.
Heimdall was way better than Odin in recognizing and flashing ROM's. You need to watch a tutorial on youtube on how to use Heimdall manually in case you can't find a ROM in the right format (compressed as "tar.gz").
I used a rooted Gingerbread 2.3.6 ROM, which was packaged for Odin. Had to decompress the files and set them up manually in Heimdall for flashing.
Once Infuse 4G was running with root I downloaded/installed ROM Manager from Google Play and transfered the Carbon KitKat ROM 4.4.4 (2014-07-06) and GAPPS 4.4.2 (2014-06-06) ".zip" files to the root folder via USB cable from PC (phone connected as USB Mass Storage).
In ROM Manager you can select the ROM you want to install when the phone reboots. At some point I was able to also install GAPPS before finally booting to Carbon KitKat.

so how were you able to flash carbon and the gapps? why did you use 4.2 gapps with a 4.4.4 rom????

okay so you used rom manager to install CWM recovery.....and you selected to flash carbon via rom manager which then took you to the recovery then somehow you were able to flash the gapps.........but how was it able to directly flash on GB CWM version did you have to flash carbon rom twice in order to get the updated CWM version then flash carbon again to get the rom then flash the gapps then wipe cache and dalvik cache?
also you made a "root folder" in your sdcard?
PS. did you use heimdall one click or the more complicated version?
I can't say if the Carbon ROM was flashed twice, but it seems the phone rebooted more than once during the whole process (from rooted Gingerbread 2.3.6 to KitKat 4.4.4).
ROM Manager only requires to save ROM .zip file(s) in your phone SD card, read somewhere to use root folder or topmost location in SD card (not a folder named "root"), but you can use Recovery to select the location of the .zip file to install.
ROM Manager boots into Recovery to install .zip files, whether is Carbon ROM or GAPPS.
After the Carbon ROM was installed (and maybe a reboot), before booting into KitKat, I was in CWM Recovery and used the menu to install GAPPS.
Recovery has a "wipe data/factory reset" menu option.
Used Heimdall 1.4.0 to manually flash a rooted Gingerbread 2.3.6 ROM that was packaged for Odin, but there are other ways to root the phone.
It can take a while for KitKat to install so give it some time.
I thought you had to go to ICS before KitKat. Can you really go straight from GB to KK?
Also when I downloaded "Rom Manager" and tried to install CWM it did not list the Infuse as being supported for installing the CWM Recovery saying I had to find and install one manually.

CWM for the i9000 is supposed to be a valid substitute. I don't use the AT&T version of the Infuse (mine is Rogers), so it didn't work for me at first - still had to flash with ODIN.
Interestingly, as I remember after flashing with ODIN and rebooting into recovery, it was Blue CWM, not Red (which Red is what you usually get by flashing only the ODIN/Heimdall images).
I didn't have to install any other version before flashing KitKat, only had to root the phone. I rooted by flashing a "rooted" GB 2.3.6 ROM, but there are other ways to root the phone.
When I tried to install CWM Recovery with ROM Manager I got an error so I went ahead and flashed with whatever recovery the phone had.
Is possible the rooted GB 2.3.6 ROM had CWM Recovery already, or ROM Manager was able to install CWM Recovery after all (phone rebooted more than once, I kept trying until it worked ).
Read you must use "Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III" in ROM Manager since they have similar partitions.
ROM Manager no longer has the i9300 Galaxy S III option, but you only need to create a Recovery shortcut in Apex launcher and flash from a Carbon ROM .zip file (KK v4.4.4 nightly for Infuse 4G, dirty flashing with no wipes).
The Carbon ROM includes a Carbon Delta, which doesn't update nightlies (it always says "system is up to date").
Have not seen other KitKat kernels or TWRP touch for the Infuse 4G, currently using CWM Recovery 6.0.5.0.

I tried putting clockwork recovery onto my Samsung Infuse. I Installed it through a ROM Manager and now everytime i go into the ROM manager and select it to boot into recovery it boots into android system recovery. I cannot get to the Modified Recovery needed to install a cutom ROM.
What do i need to do to get CWM to work?

Option 1:
1.-Download Sgs Kernel installer
2.- Download a Kernel with modified cwm included ( here one choice: http://www.multiupload.com/1E3AWIQYAA <--If you are on Froyo;
http://www.multiupload.com/6ZVYU3F106<-- If you are on Gingerbread) The links ARE NOT mine are gtgx.
3.-Put the kernel in your sd card.
4.-Open sgs kernel flasher and select the kernel.
It will reboot and convert your data to ext4 and also give you modified red cmw ready to install custom roms. It will take about 5 minutes be patient.
Option 2:
1.- Download the Defuse 1.5 one click kernel from:

2.- Put your phone into download mode
3.- Run the file you downloaded it will do the work for you.
Find Odin preset with 3e and root. Follow directions and run odin properly with phone in download mode (explained in odin post). After that you will be rooted with modded 3e recovery. Then you can download rom manager when the phone reboots and flash for galaxy i9000, reboot into recovery and reinstall packages. You should be able to reinstall packages now since odin set up your recovery. It sounds like you aren't able to put the modded recovery in the system/bin folder; same thing happened to me. I had root, but could not modify the recovery file in system/bin. Odin is a charm, if I had the money I would donate to the guy who made it, unfortunately I don't at the moment. Odin says phone should show as com## yet mine showed as com0 and still worked. Probably depends on which USB port you use. Odin takes about 10 minutes to flash your phone but it will be worth it when you are done. I was skeptical because of the steps but it is very easy, once you get your phone into download mode its a breeze. PLEASE HAVE A FULL CHARGE WHEN YOU DO ANY FLASHING. If your phone dies you can have serious problems during the flash.

Just an update, Forced it to work with SGS kernel, it put up a huge fight tho... after CWM was installed i got GingerReal 2.3.5 on there. I iz happeh
I soft bricked my phone playing with ICS, I got a JIG and solved the problem
I can now ODIN back to any version and once rooted I can install any samsung based rom, the problem comes when I try to flash aosp both CM7 and any ICS beta
What happens is I select the zip, it runs a script and the phone reboots, I see the AT&T logo and then it mounts the sd card, it says it can't find the zip file.
I've tried Froyo, Eclair, even gingerbread (I know your not supposed to flash cm7 from gingerbread, I'm just running outta ideas) I have froyo bootloaders, I reinstalled them with heimdal. I've also done a master clear and erased the internal sd card
Does anyone have an idea of why this is happening?
Are you trying to install the zip from ClockworkMod?
Most likely, the rom is incompatible with the flash method you are choosing which bricks your phone. I had this happen to me twice from either flashing a rom the wrong way or just trying to flash the wrong rom all together and killing my system, but I ended up telling AT&T Techs that it happened when I tried upgrading to 2.2 to avoid warranty issues and they replaced my whole device with a refurbished unit =]
However keep in mind that they cannot jig your device and you will have to do that yourself to get your data off your device before you try getting a new one via this method.
Possible Solution:
1. If you can, flash cm7 to your device
2. Flash This ICS rom

Ok, everything I see says I should flash from a captivatemtd recovery, but when I install Rom manager and select captivatemtd, it says their are no offical recoveries for it, I'm currently running cognition froyo 2.2 with froyo bootloaders
Does anyone know where I can manually get the captivatemtd CWM? and how do I install it?

I'll go over my method of installing(I've had ZERO issues flashing from/to any ROM)
1. I FTS/MC using Odin 1 Click. My phone build is 1008
2. Root with 1 click root(I have to do steps 2 and 3 because I do not have 3 button recovery)
3. Sideload and install ROM Manager(Rom manager, and CWM update.zip are in the Sideload zip that's attached)
4. Copy CWM Update.zip and ROM to device. Reboot and install CWM
5. Reboot into recovery and install ROM

Tried this to the letter still doesn't work, could it be because of rom manager not finding a recovery for captivatemtd, some pages say I need that recovery but it isn't available in rom manager.
Finnally
Finnally got CM7 installed the problem was I had to do the three button boot into recovery twice, the first time updates clockworkmod to version 5.x
Now to try ICS again, wish me luck

Thanks for all the suggestions, the tip in the video about flashing the speedmod kernel did help I think, I've successfully flashed
teamhacksung's ICS Port for Captivate (BUILD 9) again.
A couple notes here:
1 when your flashing cm7 from cwm( NOT 3e RECOVERY THOUGH) you need to flash the. Zip file, then reboot system, IT WILL PROBABLY BOOT LOOP, three button back to recovery and flash again, then while in recovery still flash gapps. Reboot and it will install fine. You should ONLY need to do the two time flash the first time going to cm7.
2. When you go to rom manager and choose manual flash overide from hitting the menu button you will get the unsupported recovery, DON'T WORRY about it and hit ok. Then another popup will come up and choose 3.x and it will work.

I'm rooting and upgrading a I727R for a friend and want to just double check something before I proceed.
I've got the I9100 and rooting and flashing is an absolute breeze. According to these instructions it isn't quite as easy with the 727, unless I'm just not understanding things.
I believe with the I9100 recovery is integrated with the Kernel so every time you flash a Kernel you automatically flash the accompanying custom recovery. Therefore to root you simply put the phone in download mode, connect to Odin and flash CF-Root kernel => DONE. Superuser is automatically installed, as well as CWM. Then you just drop and flash whatever ROMs you want.
From the above link, am I to understand that an EXTERNAL SD Card is truly essential? And since CWM can be installed without rooting couldn't I do the following?
1. Drop ROM onto root of internal SD
2. Flash CWM via Odin
3. Boot to recovery, flash ROM.
4. Done.
Will that process not automatically root the phone during install of the Rom?

Right, put custom rom on sd,flash cwm with odin
that will give you the cwm to flash a custom rom which will already be rooted for him.
Recently I hard-bricked my Tab whilst installing a Rom on it (Brick Bug). Now I have a replacement, and it's about time I replaced the HC with something else.
I plan to use the 'Singha ROM ICS P6800DXLP7' ROM and ' Dedraks' GT-P6800' kernel. I'm guessing installation for both is via CWM, but that is how I bricked my tab last time. How can I work around this as to not brick it again? Odin? Which do I install first? Any guidance would really be appreciated!

Share some detail procedure...wipe on stock rom, custom rom, kernel...etc which end with brick?
For now I believe safe atm..
- From stock ICS

- Install cwm using Mobile Odin
- Boot to cwm recovery
- Flash custom rom and custom kernel
- Reboot recovery NOT reboot system.
- Full wipe and fix permission
- Reboot system to home screen
That what I always do
Here's what works for me
first, d/l CWM to SD card.
then power down.
reboot into download mode ,PC Odin is my install of choice for the roms...
then power down again after the new rom installs and re-boots
re-boot into recovery and choose install zip from SD and choose CWM (which is a temporary install)
dont wipe anything, just choose to install zip and then choose your new kernel.
After kernel (a safe one) installs, then re-boot system.
Ive never bricked this tab or my GN7000 Note

correct me if im wrong, but as long as you do not factory reset in stock ics recovery you are okay. Right?
Some Note GT 7000 guys reported that they bricked their phablets by copping large files (being on ICS). If this doesn't affect our P6800s, then you are not wrong.
I had installed LQ2 without wiping anything. But had many Screen Offs and Shut Downs, so I considered to risk the clean install.
Did it with Mobile Odin Pro, but first
Ensured that I already have CWM 6.0.0.1
Flashed Dedraks Kernel.
In Mobile Odin chosen "open file..." and then the particular md5 file,
BUT EXCLUDED:
1. Kernel
2. Recovery
Then I selected "wipe" and "clean", crossed my fingers and everything went OK.
Not quite everything, because I lost root, although I am pretty sure that I did not unselect "everroot'.
It was not a big issue. Installed again "root.zip" via CWM recovery.
Its about a week since then and I have nothing to complain.

I Installed CM 10.1 on my phone with the zip file placed on the sd card. Before I did this, I updated my root to the current verizon firmware using a zip file and installed it using clockworkmod. I don't want CM 10.1 on my phone anymore, I just want to go back to the touchwiz interface. Please help me! I obviously can't flash the firmware using odin because It was a zip file I downloaded right to my phone. I haven't backed it up using CWM I know that was not smart but what's done is done. Do I just need to delete the zip file of CM 10.1? How do I go about restoring the touchwiz. I already tried to reinstall the zip file that the verizon updated firmware used. It didn't work.

Just find the stock ROM and flash via Odin or download one of the many touchwiz based roms (Axis, Hyperdive, Synergy etc) and install the same way you installed CM
