this should really be the only answer, but at least the others are decent.

Just flash this in your current recovery - https://www.dropbox.com/s/z1uaefffkfiwequ/TWRP-2.7.1.1-Hammerhead.zip

[Q] I want to root, but...is it worth it?

I apologize for asking this question since there are several variants of it all over this forum. I just haven't quite found the answers I'm looking for.*
When you read this and respond, please keep in mind that I am a major noobie. Pretend you're talking to a child. **
My reason for wanting to root is to take advantage of certain apps like BoostVolume, AdAway and TitaniumBackup (can't remember the others I wanted...).
At this time, I don't want to install a custom ROM. I'm just not ready to take that chance.*
So...
Can I get some of the benefits of rooting without installing a custom recovery?*
* * *If so, what will I gain and lose by doing this?*
* * *Will I still get OTA updates? *Will an OTA update remove root access?
For some reason, I'm really stuck on continuing to get OTA updates...I guess I don't want the responsibility.
There are good threads for "major noobies" to read.
Start with the "read before you root" thread at the top of this q&a forum. Also, search general for "ota help-desk". There is a rooting thread stuck at the top of general too.
Please read those then let is know if you have any questions

Thanks so much! *I've been searching and reading all week, and I either found conflicting answers or unclear answers...frustrating.
I had read "Before you root" previously, but hadn't yet found the Beginner thread (top of General), which has been the most helpful.

Yeah, I'm not sure why I'm leery of flashing the updates. I guess I have to take it slowly and start with rooting (without custom recovery).
I don't think you can root without custom recovery. Don't worry about it. If anything goes wrong, which is very very unlikely, you can restore to stock in fastboot.

If you are going to root, I really suggest getting s custom recovery too. Then you can make a nandroid backup and generally undo most problems that may happen by returning to that "snapshot" of the os.
But using fast boot to restore a factory image will fix these too, with stock recovery, but will erase data.

Here is a root without recovery by the SuperSU dev chainfire.

I do recommend that you also install a recovery for the reasons posted by others in this thread.

You can root by booting into a custom recovery and then flashing supersu, fastboot boot recovery.img. You don't need to install one.

I've never managed to boot into recovery rather than flash it. It worked on my Nexus S.

Sounds like nandroid backup is the way to go so I don't have to lose data. Thanks!

I had planned on using CF-auto-root, so I didn't need a custom recovery. I had based that on my fear of changing too much, but I also saw this, which I'm probably misunderstanding?
From Chainfire: (I am personally moving away from custom kernels and recoveries, for various reasons).
The more I think I understand, the more confused I get. It seems I'm getting lost in the terminology. To completely understand my options, I need to back up and go through the definitions and CLI commands again. A lot of what you're saying is going over my head. I think I've read too much and some information just isn't sticking.

Don't worry. It's actually very easy. If you know about 2 fastboot commands you'll know just about anything you need to.
fastboot oem unlock, unlocks the bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img, puts a custom recovery on your phone

Has anyone tried it?
is there any problem؟
plz
It doesn't work on any Rom. It's completely independent.
Please read sticky threads to get background information on Android, recovery, bootloaders etc. The one at the top of this forum

As already said, It's independent.
But. I assume that you flash recovery using apps like Flashify or Goo im, right?

I flash via fastboot as well. I was trying to say that if he is concerned about compatibility is because he maybe uses goo im instead of fastboot method.
So, if he used fastboot instead of apps, he wouldn't have that confusion.

Quick question

Hey guys I just got back from a 6 month deployment. And once I got back to the states I got the update icon on my phone. I am looking for a good ROM to flash and I have totally brain farted on how to make sure TWRP is up to date. I went to goo manager and it says everything is up to date.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Latest twrp is - https://www.dropbox.com/s/z1uaefffkfiwequ/TWRP-2.7.1.1-Hammerhead.zip just flash it in the twrp you currently have
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Cool thanks worked. Now just need to decide what ROM to flash.

Thank you for your service. Don't use GooManager, it's unstable and causes many problems. TeamWin doesn't even recommend GooManager anymore. If you must use an app they recommend TWRP Manager.

[Q] Clockwork mod / Philz touch recoveries

Sorry to start a whole thread over this question, but I am looking for one of the above recoveries for my Note pro (P-900) and haven't had much luck. Anybody know of either of them? Thanks...
Neither one has been developed for the P900.

Couldn't get TWRP to work on my P907a. As far as I know there are none for the US AT&T model. Right?
Have you tried this one?

Tried that one and the newer version, both with ODIN and zip installs. No luck. ODIN always fails and zip install always encounter problems and always boots back into stock recovery (whether I let it reboot fully or boot straight into recovery mode). Thanks for the help though.

Rooting MMB29X

Hi everyone , i was wondering if any of you guys found a good way to root the latest version version , i tried to manually root via recovery but nothing , please let me know if any of you guys sucessfully did , thanks in addvance .
Yes, pretty much everybody, I'd guess. What method did you use? SuperSU? Doitright?
Best to think of all the answers you want and supply the info up front - you save everybody a lot of time, not least yourself.
I used SuperSU , 3 or 4 different versions 3 betas and 1 not beta then bootloop after every SuperSU installation .. Then I flashed the boot partition again and I removed the bootloop but the root was not there ..

What I did:
1. Flashed all images except the userdata.
2. Boot with TWRP and flash SuperSU.
3. Reboot and done.
