"unfortunately, settings has stopped" - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I just tried to make my Nexus 5 read NFC while on the locked screen using this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/development/mod-modified-nfcnci-apk-to-poll-screen-t2391170/page3
Apart from it not working (rooted, read/write, permissions set, etc....) I now get the following error mesage when I try to onter the setting on my Nexus.
"unfortunately, settings has stopped"
Placed back the original 'NfcNci.apk' and 'NfcNci.odex' files with no result.
I did a lot of searching, but cannot find a solution.
I hope anyone can help my out here.
Thanks in advance !!!!!

Don't suppose you made a nandroid before installing the apk. You could just restore it if you did. OtherWise you might have to flash the system.img from the factory image in fastboot
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app

Forgot to mension that :silly:
I backed up the original 'NfcNci.apk' and 'NfcNci.odex' before I started. Already placed the back, with no results.

If that doesn't work you can just make a nandroid backup, flash factory images, use Titanium Backup to backup the fresh Settings.apk/NfcNci.apk/data then restore your nandroid and restore the TiBu backup of those two

Deleted the content in com.android.nfc. No luck.
Dalvik is new to me.
What I discovered is that the 'NfcNci.apk' looks different after replacing it.
It first looked like a bluetooth logo (the backup on sd still does). But after copying it to 'system/app' it looks like an android robot coming out of a blue box with APK written on it.
When I trie to run the 'NfcNci.apk' it gives me a parse error.

Delete both the .apk and .odex, along with data folder then reboot to recovery, clear cache and Dalvik, boot into android and put the backed up files back into /system/app with correct permissions and reboot again. If it doesn't work then try the other method I suggested previously, if that doesn't work I don't know what to tell you lol. Also try clearing data of Settings itself

Thanks for all your help thusfar Lethargy!!!
If you can only tell me how to "clear cache and Dalvik" I will give it a go.
I'm a bit new to android so please forgive me for any simple questions......

Depends on what recovery you're using, TWRP or CWM. In CWM it should be in advanced, in TWRP tick the boxes for it in wipe. Search it up if you're not sure.
On the other hand, "Unfortunately, Lethargy is falling asleep"

Different timezones i guess
I ended up flashing and restoring the apps one by one. So far so good.......

Try resetting your wifi connection on your phone.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Only using 3G and already restarted...will try again..odd
I had this issue over the weekend. I tried several things from the internet.
1. Resetting my connection, airplane mode, etc.
2. Unmounting/remounting the internal SD card.
3. Clearing the Market Cache
The final thing that made it work was rebooting the phone. I don't know if any of those other things helped, but that was the final step.
Rebooting the phone should fix it.
Did it and nothing...I guess Im going to remove the battery too.
Not good...this happened after I had to boot twice as the phone got stuck during boot fir the first time ever and when I opened Market I had to accept the agreement but everything else was normal.
Op, are you completely stock?
And I'm assuming that by "nothing" you mean you have tried multiple apps
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Nope I am not stock per se :
SuperRooter + lagfix ext2.3 + OCed 1.2Ghz
This just happened this morning after that odd issue rebooting the phone where it got stuck on the galaxy S image then on next boot I had to accept some agreement for the Market place.
Still no solution for this..

BTW it is possible restore a backup using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339640 , in restore mode and saving that backup to SD?
install cwm and backup using it.
and are you sure that if I backup via CMW I will be able to restore my stock rom from this backup after I will have tried any other custom rom?
I have already CMW 4 on my system, after a recovery power on, I have selected backup and it putted the backup on sd folder named CMW/backup...I know I can restore it with the restore command, but I am not sure if it will work, or if will BRICK my phone

There is a way to know if the backup is not corrupted?

it must have completed successfully, or it would have shown an error.

IMO,
RazoDroid, Chocobread are the best.
Creed's ROM is kinda good too.

After a custom rom, install Titanium Backup, open it, press the left button, select Batch, select All restore and follow instructions.
Previously, when doing a backup, select Backup All apps + data.
To Titanium work system must be rooted.

[Q] Having problems installing TB

Hi, I downloaded Titanium Backup and tried to install it but it keeps saying that there is no storage space and that I should clear some space. But i checked my storage and i still have about 27gb of free space left. I also tried installing and uninstalling other apps and it works fine its just TB that does not work. Anyone have any idea whats going on?
I have attached a couple screenshots so you can see.
Thanks in advance
Cheers,

What does the "Storage" page in Settings say?
Does it work if you install it directly from the Play app?
it says 25gb of free space and ive tried installing it directly from the playstore as well does not work but every other app works
OK, then the error message does not state the real problem.
Next idea: Install CatLog, then try installing TB again until it fails, then open CatLog and scroll up until you find the real error message. Or instead use adb logcat from a PC if you prefer that.

I think you may have too many apps running somehow. Try clearing your cache and davik cache. Have you tried side loading TB? You can download the previous version directly from them. Just remember to enable third party apps installs. If it works, you'll be able to upgrade to the latest version via in app or Google Play.
I don't know how to read the catlog, so no help there.
I've had this problem several times. It usually happens when you've installed it once before. What you need to do is go into /data/app and delete the Titanium Bacukup .odex file. I can't remember the full file name, but it'll have titanium backup in the name.
You should the be able to re-install fine.

I've read something similar when searching for the error message, but I don't understand where such an odex file would come from (usually, odex files exist only for system apps - the user-installed apps have dex files in /data/dalvik-cache instead).
But yes, deleting everything related to TB from /data/app, /data/data and /data/dalvik-cache is the next thing to try - the file names start with com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup (or, in dalvik-cache, with [email protected]@" prefixed). You need a root-enabled file manager for this, I use Ghost Commander.

[Q] No Mobile Data - using ViperOneS_v1.2.0

Hi there, yes I am a noob here but I searched this and couldnt find anything.
I flashed two HTC one S phones and am having the same issue with both. Everything works great except the mobile data.
Mobile data is turned on in settings, but says disconnected. Wifi works great, the phone makes calls, just no mobile data.
I searched networks and it sees my network "Fido" and even registers with Fido, but it still says disconnected next to the Mobile Data option in settings.
I will try calling our provider I suppose but I am stuck at this point..
I have also wiped cache, and dalvik cache and did a full wipe at install.
Recovery - CWM 5.8.3.1
ROM - ViperOneS_v1.2.0
Please help!
Sorry guys. I got it.
I had to search the carrier specific APN settings and manually enter them.
I didnt read anything about that anywhere and like I said... Im still a noob.
thanks
you dont have by any chance a nandroid backup with the original settings of your fido phone.
or at least the original build.prop

I did a backup from the "backup and restore" option within CWM recovery, just after I had unlocked and rooted. I had not yet installed the the Viper ROM, which leads me to believe it probably still had the correct settings at that time, but not sure.
wow, can you please put that backup somewhere online?
or at least take out the build.prop file from /system folder
pleaseee
PS: CWM recovery just sucks on this model; better use TWRP
If you post the backup Trashking, make sure you note it was made with CWM and needs restored with CWM. As, most of us use TWRP recovery--
so, don't want to make it available for others?

Im also abit worried this backup may contain personal information, as Im not sure I did a full wipe until I installed the rom. This backup was done after I had unlocked and loaded CWM. I'd like to be sure none of my crap is getting posted.
Also,
Can you please explain why CWM is crap for this model? It seems to work fine on mine but perhaps im missing something.
Upon further review, it seems the reasons most people prefer TWRP over CWM for interface reasons.
Im not sure im worried about that.
I have to disagree with a few posts here, you can do everything the same way with both recoveries. You don't need to flash the boot image in fastboot with cwm I've done it myself and I didn't see any difference in speed between the two backing up or restoring.
It's preference on which you choose to use, I'm not saying that either is bad they both have a great support background and are dedicated to quality as they should be, it's the most important software on your device in consideration to root users and without it working properly your taking a very large risk.
Personally believe recovery should be layed out in a manner that is easy to use and functional for all types of users, adding gimmicks to something that should be taken seriously I feel is unnecessary and both teams do a great job of keeping it clean and treat the work as if they are paid to make them.
Both are great at their work, both are worth having. - Orical

[Resolved] [Q] Factory Reset and "Rom"

Hello,
If you have a Phone which comes preinstalled with stock and Put "X" rom on the Phone, install some junk do some stuff, .
Now If i Click , Settings > Back up and re set > Factory data reset . If i click that option,
Dose it make the phone go to preinstalled STOCK or pre installed "X" Rom?
Thank You very much !
Soled tthanks
First of all which handset are you using
Hit like if i helped you
Flashing a new ROM overwrites the old ROM unless you have something like MultiROM installed to boot multiple ROMs. Factory reset wipes the userdata, cache and dalvik cache leaving your system partition in it's default state.

Now on Android:
If a Factory Reset happens, to Confirm A or B

Or
B) Does it happen like Windows, All files get deleted and EVERY file, is re created Brand new.
I want to do B.

Factory reset is like refreshing Windows 8. It leaves your saved files and operating system intact while erasing your installed programs and Windows settings.
Reformatting is like resetting which will also delete any saved files leaving only the stock OS.

You can flash different ROMs and keep the same kernel and recovery like installing different Windows keeping the same BIOS.
If you also want to delete the system OS then you can do it through recovery or Fastboot.
You can not completely wipe your device like a hard drive.

I don't know what device you're using or what's compatible. I know that for Nexus devices you can download the image pack which is like the mobile equivalent of ISO then flash it through Fastboot.
