Moto RAZR HD, Kitkat rooted, locked. VZW phone, not on VZW network.
About a week after Kitkat update my phone started this (still on VZW at the time). It will randomly get stuck with a black screen and the only way to get it back up is to hold the power button and it will do a reboot. Sometimes that reboot is no good and I need to manually shut it down again and restart. I have tried freezing things with Ti with no avail. Since it is random, I am assuming it is an app running in the background or a setting. I have posted a question about other apps to freeze on the string here and am waiting a reply.
Has anyone came across a fix for this issue or has an idea?
I doubt you will find a simple fix or app to freeze to stop this problem.
IMO your best option would be to reflash stock. You can use my script from the Dev forum and keep data, but I recommend backing up your data and doing a full wipe.

I actually did get it fixed. Well, I am declaring it fixed after 2 days with no problems.
I ran across a thread about forcing the phone to use HSPA+ and noticed the symptoms were close to what I had. Instead of doing the scrip edit as per entry one, I simply used Ti backup to freeze the fast dormancy app.
Like I said, two days with no problems at all, in fact, phone is better than ever!

I got the Inspire 4G on launch day and haven't done anything to it except load apps. I noticed a few hours in while installing an app that the phone rebooted by itself right when the app started to download. After the phone was back up, I attempted to download the app again and this time it worked perfectly. It did this one other time with one other app but then things were fine...for awhile.
I started looking at the apps that came preloaded on the phone and when I attempted to start the Blockbuster app, it said that it needed to update and then the phone rebooted. When it came back up, I attempted to start the app again and it did the same thing. When it came up a second time, I went to the market and tried to download the update straight from there but it rebooted when the download tried to start. I did finally get the update to take, but the phone became very unstable for the next 30 mins, so I decided to uninstall the update and not play with the Blockbuster app again!
For the rest of the night, the phone would reboot from time to time and it would also freeze without much warning. Sometimes it would give me a force close message relating to Gmail or Messages or some other app before the reboot / freeze, but other times it would just do it. One time when it rebooted, it froze at the "rethink possible" screen and required the battery to be taken out before it would come back.
I did some reading and found a similar problem with the Desire HD. It too had some reboot / freeze / lag problems after the latest firmware / software update and after some investigation, it was found that if you enable USB Debugging in the Applications portion of Settings, most of those problems would disappear! I enabled USB Debugging as suggested and I can say that I haven't had a problem since...going on 18 hours.
I started this tread to see if anyone else is having these issues, since I have yet to see anything negative about the phone yet except the external speaker complaint, and to offer the USB Debugging possible solution.
I have had one unexplained reboot. Was odd.

Sounds like u got a defective device. The first inspire ended up just rebooting by itself out of nowhere and then when it tried to start back up got stuck at the white HTC screen. The phone was completely stock. I returned it for a different one and now all is perfect.

My Evo started rebooting until I had to get it replaced. If it keeps doing it take it back.
This has to be an iscolated incident.

Hi all,
Since updating my O3D to the latest firmware via the LG Update tool, it has crashed a few times (at least three), so bad that I had to reboot.
It happens when I use the keyboard. Twice while typing text messages and once in Dolphin web browser.
Keyboard and messaging app were the stock ones from LG.
It seemed like the keyboard 'app' crashed and wouldnt respond to presses any more. I could press the home button at the bottom of the screen, but the keyboard stayed on screen taking up space and everything move up to the top. If I held the home button I could switch apps but noting worked. Eventually I just held the power button and powered off. I had to choose power off twice before the phone did anything.
This was the same each time it crashed.
Anyone else seen problems like this? Never saw it before I updated the fw but then again I've only had the phone a couple of weeks.
This is my second update since having my Optimus 3D and yes this time I have noticed one problem that I didn't have before which is that if I leave my wi-fi enabled then the phone will reboot after about twenty minutes of it being on yet if I switch the phone off the phone works fine.
So yes it is possible the firmware update affected your phone in some way. In your case you could try a different keyboard app but in mine it is the built in wireless so no solution as yet but maybe a keyboard app and or alternative messenger app will help solve your problem.

same here I had problems once I updated from D to K and then 10J, the phone will just keep rebooting, I tried taking out the SD card as some have suggested but that still did not fix the issue, last night I totaly wiped the phone to Brand new condition, then re-installed everything via the market, No root and the phone so far has been working perfect, 14 hours no reboots with wifi set on always.
after updating to LGP920-V10k-SEP-17-2011 my phone reboots ever 20 min.
phone is completely wiped no root. just standard.
Not sounding good. I do have root on my phone and I also leave WiFi on from when I get home until when I go back to work and my phone doesn't reboot on its own.
The last time my phone crashed was Friday or Saturday but I havent used the keyboard that much since.

Maybe they are different revisions of the motherboard on the phone.
It is strange to help because i don't have any reboots.
Another thing I have noticed since the update, when typing text messages if I turn the phone to landscape mode, the screen doesn't rotate to match.
I have a few rotation glitches too I think they need to hurry up with GB update

To be honest, I didn't check into the whole Android version thing before I got the phone and it never bothered me, until now! Hopefully these bugs wont be present in GB.

I am in gb so guess the bugs are universal but solved my wifi issue by setting wifi to sleep when phone screen is off.

Having an interesting issue with my N5, its only a few weeks old. New from Australian play store but imported into NZ (hence returning it will be a PITA so I would like to exhaust all options before resorting to that)
Basically it will freeze with a black screen, seemingly at random. This has never happened whilst using the device in hand, I'll lock it and it and when I try to unlock it again, it simply won't wake from sleep. If I'm playing a song the current song will continue to play until the end and then no further music will play. This is seemingly random and I haven't found a trigger yet.
Running stock Android with Franco Kernel and Root.
May be of relevance but sometimes it will also seemingly randomly drop all radio signal, even in high strength areas, although this could be a possibly issue with the SIM or switching between 4G and 3G towers.
Tried to find a trigger for it but because its so sporadic I haven't found out what could be doing it. Aside from removing all my apps and using it for two weeks, then installing them one by one with a weeks test period, I don't know what to do.
Holding down the power button for 20 sec will force a reboot and clear the issue, but I'd like it to be fixed for good.
Thanks!

I've had the phone since Mid-November.
This happened to me a few times too.
Update to the latest franco kernel and remove from boot any voltage changes before hand

i know that problem, the only option you can try to do, is a clean install. but the first thing to do is make a backup its work for me. sometimes i update my rom i got it too.
Right, so it's most likely software, and not hardware related?
I'm going to find out how to pull as much debug info as I can and see if I can't at least pinpoint the problem somewhat.
I've had an Oppo find 5 and S2 (intentional version) and never run into this issue.

It's a well discussed problem in the Franco kernel thread... save yourself time an effort trying to pin it down and just update to latest r47 build, or try a different kernel.
Do you have undervolt set?

Wasn't aware of this, still I'm 90% certain I had this issue before I rooted. Regardless updated to r47 and I'll see how that holds up.
I've been busy so still haven't purchased FK's control panel app, still running the free FKU. So what ever settings are default are the ones I'll be running. Perhaps I am a victim of my own laziness running Franco on stock haha
It's not a brick in the normal sense. I can use my phone, but I cannot update apps, send text messages, and the phone goes from full charge to nil in 3 hours without touching it.
The app thing, I tell it to update and it will download for few seconds then it will hang. It will then try to download repeatedly and if it makes it to 100% it will try to install and it will be stuck on install for like 30 and then it like gives up and goes to the next one doing the same thing. It also tries to install when sideloading and takes 10-15 minutes. Text messages can take up to 2 days to send. And also another problem is that I can't multitask anymore I could use to start the updates in the play store and then go browse the Web. Now if I do that the downloads stop and is like that for everything I could use to go between apps without data loss now I have to finish what I'm doing before switching apps. Some help please. I've done a hard reset before and it worked fine for about a 4 days to a week and then went back to the same way

Something is possibly trashed. Have you been doing a lot of "dirty flash" updates for CM? You might want to wipe it clean with a factor data reset and reinstall clean and see how that goes.
If the issue persists, then you might want to go back to stock and see if that fixes it. If at that point, you are still experiencing the issues, then the phone might be dying.
I did neglect to mention that, I'm running bone stock right now just unlocked and rooted so it is as I feared, my phone is dying.

just because you are running stock and having the issues doesnt mean its dying.
if you flash stock clean and are still having the issues, then its likely dying.
there could easily be some building corruption that just needs to be fixed by flashing stock.
dont bother doing any factory reset, just go right for the flash, it will wipe while its doing its thing.
Running totally stock on 5.1.1 (N920PVPU2A0I6). Starting about an hour ago I'm getting a pop-up saying "Bootstrap Failed...".
Phone is unresponsive and reboots by itself.
Thoughts?
late,

*EDIT: Factory reset didn't solve it.....correction, 3rd attempt at factory reset seems to have solved it. But I would love to know what initially caused the situation.

The only thing that updated/changed this morning was an update (I believe) for Sprint Zone.

Update....phone has been stable (no re-boots, lock-ups, etc.) for the past few days. I occasionally get the pop-up message stating, "bootstrap failed..." but it doesn't seem to impact the performance of the phone from what I can tell.

My phone just started doing this today. Also a Sprint Note 5. No software updates installed recently... most recent was the Sprint and Samsung updates for Samsung Pay, which I did set up-- but I did that day 1. Right before the problem started happening, the phone rebooted itself, and it hasn't been well since. I checked aLogcat, but nothing gets logged there. After a few of the "Bootstrap failed..." toasts, the phone just becomes unresponsive and I have to hard shutdown. The only thing that I can think of that I've done differently today was plug my phone into my laptop to charge it earlier. I don't think I'd ever plugged it into my laptop before.
Hopefully somebody can pin down the cause of the problem here. I'm surprised that aLogcat doesn't show anything, which makes me wonder if it's some Knox issue...

Same problem, I have stock Sprint Note 5 with Samsung Pay updated and activated. Worked fine for a few days then all of the sudden I started getting "Bootstrap Failed" and my phone is unresponsive and/or data connection stops functioning forcing me to restart.
Is Sprint/Samsung aware of this issue and working on a fix? Very annoying. I've uninstalled all updates to Sprint Zone, force stopped and cleared data for Sprint Zone which appeared to help for a couple days, but now it's back again.
Has anyone had any luck with hard / factory reset? I don't want to go through the hassle of backing everything up, wiping it clean and reinstalling everything if at the end of the day it doesn't make a difference.
After a few more lock ups and reboots yesterday, my phone started behaving normally again, but just now I saw another "Bootstrap failed..." toast, so clearly the problem has not gone away. It hasn't locked up again on me yet, so maybe I'll be okay for a while. The only references I've seen to this error have all pointed to the Sprint Note 5, and most have mentioned Samsung Pay, so I suspect it's an issue there. Whether or not Samsung/Sprint are aware of it, I don't know.
I've also read it may or may not have something to do with Sprint Zone. I would agree it's purely due to the recent Samsung Pay update as I've had the Note since launch day and only noticed this after activating and updating Samsung Pay late last week. Before that I used the phone for nearly a month with no issues whatsoever.
While my phone hasn't locked up or rebooted by itself, I still get the "bootstrap failed..." occasionally.
I too think it was associated with the Sprint Zone and/or Samsung Pay update.
late,
Coz
I have only seen it once. Im fully stock to latest update. It happened to me after i noticed i had no data connection showed full lte but i had nothing opened up sprint zone and tried to refresh showed error. Then bootsrtap failed, have not seen it since

Bootstrap failed
It started happening to me after my fingerprint recognition failed, and I could not remember my backup password.
Just started happening to me a few days ago. completely stock sprint phone with the latest update (samsung pay). I noticed that right after the message PRL update began. After that and updating the profile, i havent seen the message.
Any updates on this? I went into Best Buy this weekend and had Samsung Experience store re-flash the OS to the phone, uninstalled Sprint Zone, uninstalled Samsung Pay updates, and force stopped Samsung Pay Framework. It worked fine for a few days but it started showing "Bootstrap failed" again. While it doesn't freeze up like it did the first time I received that message, in general the connectivity seems spotty (I'll show I'm connected to Wifi but nothing shows up on web browser or apps).
The problem is when Samsung Pay installed, it also installed an update to Android, and the Samsung Experience store in Best Buy can only flash the latest version of the OS. They can't revert back to the stock version of Android that came with the phone.
That's the biggest problem. Samsung and Google should make it so that they can revert back to a prior version of Android if the latest version has major bugs in it (which has been increasingly the case since Lollipop began rolling out). I had ZERO problems with the stock software/firmware that came with the device out of the box. Lesson learned I guess, don't accept an update if the version you have works well, until at least a couple months of the new update being out in the wild first....
Haven't seen this notice in a few days. It stopped after manual prl and profile update.
On a side note, I disabled the Samsung pay via package disable pro
Anyone figure this out?
