Reboots, Freezes and Lag - HTC Inspire 4G

I got the Inspire 4G on launch day and haven't done anything to it except load apps. I noticed a few hours in while installing an app that the phone rebooted by itself right when the app started to download. After the phone was back up, I attempted to download the app again and this time it worked perfectly. It did this one other time with one other app but then things were fine...for awhile.
I started looking at the apps that came preloaded on the phone and when I attempted to start the Blockbuster app, it said that it needed to update and then the phone rebooted. When it came back up, I attempted to start the app again and it did the same thing. When it came up a second time, I went to the market and tried to download the update straight from there but it rebooted when the download tried to start. I did finally get the update to take, but the phone became very unstable for the next 30 mins, so I decided to uninstall the update and not play with the Blockbuster app again!
For the rest of the night, the phone would reboot from time to time and it would also freeze without much warning. Sometimes it would give me a force close message relating to Gmail or Messages or some other app before the reboot / freeze, but other times it would just do it. One time when it rebooted, it froze at the "rethink possible" screen and required the battery to be taken out before it would come back.
I did some reading and found a similar problem with the Desire HD. It too had some reboot / freeze / lag problems after the latest firmware / software update and after some investigation, it was found that if you enable USB Debugging in the Applications portion of Settings, most of those problems would disappear! I enabled USB Debugging as suggested and I can say that I haven't had a problem since...going on 18 hours.
I started this tread to see if anyone else is having these issues, since I have yet to see anything negative about the phone yet except the external speaker complaint, and to offer the USB Debugging possible solution.

I have had one unexplained reboot. Was odd.

Sounds like u got a defective device. The first inspire ended up just rebooting by itself out of nowhere and then when it tried to start back up got stuck at the white HTC screen. The phone was completely stock. I returned it for a different one and now all is perfect.

My Evo started rebooting until I had to get it replaced. If it keeps doing it take it back.

This has to be an iscolated incident.

i notice my phone reboot randomly too. as long it wont freeze, or screen of death, i can live with it.

[Q] Stock myTouch 4g, 100% CPU

Hi All,
I have a mt4g which is rooted with S=Off. I switch between the Sense launcher and Launcher Pro Plus. Usual apps on the phone, not too many.
For last week or so, I have been seeing that sometimes the phone gets really really laggy and Norton Util tells me that the CPU is 100%.
Also, I think most of the times, when this happens, I see a Sync icon up top. I do not sync a lot, just 2 GMail Inboxes and weather (every 6 hours). But I do see that Sync icon most of the times when this lagging happens.
I have tried removing apps, but this still seems to be a problem. I have see somewhere that turning the USB debugging to ON has helped many, but did not work for me.
I tried CM7 RC1 when it was out, but didnt like it (stock camera etc...) and I restored back to my stock ROM. Could this have done something?
Thanks
Ravneet
On your home screen hit menu key. Go to settings. Select accounts and sync. See what all is listed there. Chances are something with sense is constantly syncing.
Disable everything from syncing. See if the problem goes away. If so turn on one thing at a time until you find the culprit.
Hope that puts you in the right direction.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Have tried that. When I go there nothing is synching. Strange.
I have tried to remove all accounts from synch but still see the problem.
Went into recovery and wiped the cache about a hour ago. So far so good. Hope it stays this way.

I've noticed that there are apps that as soon as i download them, and open them that my cpu will go to 100% until I reboot my phone. System panel is a good app that isn't too obtrusive that will tell you exactly what app is doing what.
Have you installed anything new lately?
I uninstalled everything new.
Moreover I think every time this happens the battery is less than 30%. Maybe in low battery profile there are some apps which are over utilizing the CPU.

There's a couple threads like this. The stock Rom seems to have issues running rooted. Best bet would be to flash a different rom

Turn on USB Debugging... See if that does anything
USB debugging is set to ON.

@NicGraner: Why would the stock ROM have problems with being rooted?
I am still having this problem. Uninstalled everything that is not important.
The phone just becomes unusable and I have to reboot. Un-installed Watchdog Lite too, as I thought since it is monitoring, it is taking up some CPU in background too.
No widgets on the home screens.
I guess I am gonna do a full refresh using the PDxxx.zip and go back to stock stock and then see what happens. not sure if I will lose my root once I do that.
Try the royal glacier rom it's solid stable and the sh!t
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/stop-t-mobile-from-being-bought-by-att/.......
I returned 5 phones for this exact problem, then I finally got one where the usb debugging trick actually worked. Before that I was just using OSmonitor from the market to see when I was hitting 100% then I would have to yank the battery as that was the only thing that would make it stop.
When I got this new phone I installed os monitor and waited for it to happen again, which it did, then I turned on usb debugging and watched my cpu usage graph drop to 0%. SUCCESS! Unfortunately since this was my 6th phone this solution seems to be the exception rather than the rule.
I did a lot of poking around on google trying to fix this and found a lot of people with different results. Try disabling t mobile sync and go to the myaccount app in the market and uninstall the updates. If that doesn't work try getting a new sim card and sd card, or just keep returning phones until t mobile offers to send you a g2x...
Also if you search around you'll see that this isn't just a problem with the mt4g. I found multiple threads where this happens on the nexus one, and several galaxy s phones. I really hope google is aware of this.

@johnsmith970: Thanks for the info. I will try calling TMO tonight and see what they say.
I am really bugged by this now. The phone gets totally unusable once this happens.
They will say to do a factory reset. Every tech support person I talked to told me to do that. This didn't solve the problem for me at all. It still exhibited the same symptoms on a fresh reset and not even signed in to google.
I would advise calling htc support just to let them know you are having this problem. Sending back a half a dozen phones per customer can't be good for anyones wallet or their peace of mind.

I have no idea why the stock rom doesn't like being rooted it's just what's been said and the solution which is most widely given (and mostly worked unless theres an underlying problem) is to flash a custom rom.
OK! I have more information for anyone interested.
I am tracking processes now in OS Monitor app from Market.
Most of the times it is the bluetooth daemon (bluetoothd) that goes bonkers. I was connected to my GPS in my car while driving, and when I came out of the car...the bluetoothd is going bonkers...looks like it may be trying to 'find' the device it was connected to. At the same time logcat2 process is also utilizing 30+% of the CPU.
I turned off Bluetooth and both the processes went away
So let me see if this sticks for couple of days.
Thanks

I wasn't even rooted.
If you want to keep stock rom this is what I did and its absolutely solid.
Install this stock rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1042586
After installing this rom flash faux123 first time kernel. After its all booted up reboot back into recovery and flash faux123 cfs rc3 kernel. I have my cpu set at 1200mhz and everything is gravy.

Had the phone for over a fortnight not encountered this issue myself.
Have you tried removing any self-installed apps and seeing if this still occurs? Could be one of the apps causing the problem.
nope.. i didn't - but I only have "standard" apps.. so they just need to work.. otherwise i cannot use the phone..
I haven't had any random reboots yet, have had it for 4 days now. How often does it reboot?
I had it about once a week
Mine reboots a lot, but only when Im doing something. Just minutes ago when I was using the browser, and just before when playing some game. Also it stayed all night in some kind of rebooting state, had to unplug the battery.... Had also to remove an unlock app that I think it was causing constant reboots...
It has original os.

oh no... not again!
I went through 4 Desire HDs because of the reboot problem. You would think HTC would sort this on their newer devices. It was a well known problem in the past and recognised by HTC too.
This also affects Legend, Desire, Desire HD and now Desire S
I have my desire hd for three weeks and it rebooted only one time and that was caused by poor irc app. Perhaps you should first uninstall your crap apps before bashing htc?

are there any RUU files there that we can flash to have the phone s-off?
I have the same problem in my phone it restarts 3 times in the first day
really I am fried its general problem from HTC
pls anyone can advise me what I do
For me, HTC Sense have restarted maybe 5 times in the last 2 weeks. It is not a complete reboot, but some error in HTC Sense that requires a restart of the software. I have sent reports using HTC Tell and the error is an exception regarding some bitmap that does not fit in memory. I guess this will be fixed eventually.
We haven't got that issue ever, Maybe you can refresh your device with other customized ROM.
I've had this problem, seems to be with HTC Sense itself since it's not a complete reboot and it recovers fairly fast. All the more reason to root and flash Cyanogenmod when an exploit and build comes out, this is my first Android phone and I'm not really enjoying Sense at all.
I suspect it might have something to do with memory card access. I plugged it into my laptop through removable disk mode and got an error message, and noticed it crashed when I tried to launch gallery which obviously accesses the memory card to find pictures etc.
So far I've sorted out memory card errors and I've removed all Sense widgets from the home screen and I don't seem to have any problems anymore!
For me this seems to somehow relate to alarm / clock settings, usually reboots shortly after this...
I had a reset when I was talking for more than 5 minutes
I've noticed it seems to stop when I'm using one of my own wallpapers, not an HTC Sense one.

Phone crashing since updating fw

Hi all,
Since updating my O3D to the latest firmware via the LG Update tool, it has crashed a few times (at least three), so bad that I had to reboot.
It happens when I use the keyboard. Twice while typing text messages and once in Dolphin web browser.
Keyboard and messaging app were the stock ones from LG.
It seemed like the keyboard 'app' crashed and wouldnt respond to presses any more. I could press the home button at the bottom of the screen, but the keyboard stayed on screen taking up space and everything move up to the top. If I held the home button I could switch apps but noting worked. Eventually I just held the power button and powered off. I had to choose power off twice before the phone did anything.
This was the same each time it crashed.
Anyone else seen problems like this? Never saw it before I updated the fw but then again I've only had the phone a couple of weeks.
This is my second update since having my Optimus 3D and yes this time I have noticed one problem that I didn't have before which is that if I leave my wi-fi enabled then the phone will reboot after about twenty minutes of it being on yet if I switch the phone off the phone works fine.
So yes it is possible the firmware update affected your phone in some way. In your case you could try a different keyboard app but in mine it is the built in wireless so no solution as yet but maybe a keyboard app and or alternative messenger app will help solve your problem.

same here I had problems once I updated from D to K and then 10J, the phone will just keep rebooting, I tried taking out the SD card as some have suggested but that still did not fix the issue, last night I totaly wiped the phone to Brand new condition, then re-installed everything via the market, No root and the phone so far has been working perfect, 14 hours no reboots with wifi set on always.
after updating to LGP920-V10k-SEP-17-2011 my phone reboots ever 20 min.
phone is completely wiped no root. just standard.
Not sounding good. I do have root on my phone and I also leave WiFi on from when I get home until when I go back to work and my phone doesn't reboot on its own.
The last time my phone crashed was Friday or Saturday but I havent used the keyboard that much since.

Maybe they are different revisions of the motherboard on the phone.
It is strange to help because i don't have any reboots.
Another thing I have noticed since the update, when typing text messages if I turn the phone to landscape mode, the screen doesn't rotate to match.
I have a few rotation glitches too I think they need to hurry up with GB update

To be honest, I didn't check into the whole Android version thing before I got the phone and it never bothered me, until now! Hopefully these bugs wont be present in GB.

I would try factory reset then take it back if it keeps doing it . One of the good things about a non removable battery is its suppose to help with random reboots. I've never had one so it might be something wrong with your phone.

I'd be sending it back. I'm on my second handset due to the chipping MAO issue. My first one must have rebooted about 3 times in the course of 5 days. My current one hasn't done it yet. Sounds like a fault somewhere.

Just had one reboot few mins ago, had the phone for more than two weeks, never experienced this before.
Only difference was I had installed Battery app with shows a number of remaining battery on top left corner on notification bar. Uninstalled it right away. Not sure if this app caused the reboot will report back.

My one-s did this a lot from new. Seems to have settled a bit - desperate to find out if it's a hardware issue or not as I need to return it in next day or 2 if so. Seems to be happening to too many people to be hardware unless something is majorly botched!
Is wifi on?
My router was acting up and my phone would reboot every time I tried to connect to it. Factory reset did nothing.
I reset the router and updated the firmware and all is good. It was a Dlink 614+ or something like that.
Yes, wifi on. My router is a 'draytek', a new model and up to date though. My desire running CM had no issues with it.
I have noted however that there appear to be other wifi issues with the oneS. It doesn't always disconnect from wifi even after leaving the building, eating up the power and leaving you with no data connection. I've had to put the wifi widget on the home screen to turn off and back on again to get it functional. It's a pain. Still pondering about returning this.
I have a stock HOS, and Yes I get an RR a few times a week, not 10 per day. This weekend it just went to a power off state for no reason, pressing and holding the button the first time just gave a short green line flash across the middle of the screen and it failed to boot, releasing and holding the power button a second time did boot the phone again.
I also have the same Wifi problems described by others, but worse it can not find my router (2wire 2700hgv) when the SSID is not broadcast and my neighbours SSID is! This is my only HTC or Android device with this problem.
HTC One S in the UK, stock everything, no root
I also encountered regular reboots (approximately hourly) during my first week of use. My theory is that in my case this may be related to the radio issue reported in other threads - that of the connection jumping rapidly between different connection modes.
Since WCDMA coverage in my area is terrible anyway, I switched the radio to "GSM only" under Mobile network settings > Network mode. In addition to fixing the connectivity issues I was experiencing, my device has not reset once in the weeks since.
Not ideal, but since I'm on wifi nearly all of the time, the slower speeds aren't an issue for me. I am hopeful that when HTC roll out a firmware fix for the radio, it may also put an end to the frequent resets I experienced using the "GSM / WCDMA auto" mode.
4 days old and no reboots
rooted--no custom roms yet
i too have the battery % icon and will see if i get any reboots now
any of you guys have the "tampered" in bootloader that shouldn't be there and getting the reboots
I've had two random reboots. The first while using chrome, the other one right after it had booted after the first reboot then I updated to latest firmware, and I haven't had any since that. Maybe that's what the update does ?
Sent from my HTC One S using XDA
I also had random reboots but took it back and got a brand new unit. Its rooted and running custom ROM. So far no reboot issues. Though when my first unit was rebooting it was after an app froze up and I back out of it. From testing other units it appears to be a RAM issue. Sense uses to much memory. Seems the restart occurs after dropping below 165 mb available RAM.

I have noticed that if I am streaming music with wifi and go to 4G, it tends to reboot. Either its plugged in to my car stereo and I drive away from work, or I have a set of bluetooth headphones paired with the device. In both cases, beats audio was turned on. But. I am used to random reboots with HTC phones.

I concur. The only time I've experienced any issues with phonus interruptus is when I turn on the Gps while using the Sport Tracker application. For some reason it reboots right after starting.

[Q] Frozen black screen, auto reboots...

Moto RAZR HD, Kitkat rooted, locked. VZW phone, not on VZW network.
About a week after Kitkat update my phone started this (still on VZW at the time). It will randomly get stuck with a black screen and the only way to get it back up is to hold the power button and it will do a reboot. Sometimes that reboot is no good and I need to manually shut it down again and restart. I have tried freezing things with Ti with no avail. Since it is random, I am assuming it is an app running in the background or a setting. I have posted a question about other apps to freeze on the string here and am waiting a reply.
Has anyone came across a fix for this issue or has an idea?
I doubt you will find a simple fix or app to freeze to stop this problem.
IMO your best option would be to reflash stock. You can use my script from the Dev forum and keep data, but I recommend backing up your data and doing a full wipe.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I actually did get it fixed. Well, I am declaring it fixed after 2 days with no problems.
I ran across a thread about forcing the phone to use HSPA+ and noticed the symptoms were close to what I had. Instead of doing the scrip edit as per entry one, I simply used Ti backup to freeze the fast dormancy app.
Like I said, two days with no problems at all, in fact, phone is better than ever!
