[Q] PLEASE HELP: Lost root when trying to (unsuccessfully) update my N5? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, this is my first post so bear with me if I did something wrong.
I got the notification to update my Nexus 5 (OTA) to 4.4.4. I stupidly agreed to update it and whatya know? I lost root. Here's the break down of what happened:
CWM asked me if it wanted to flash the stock recovery or keep CWM (the actual message was: ROM may flash stock recovery on boot, NO or YES. Along side yes it told me that selecting yes would keep CWM). I selected yes.
Then, in the next page, CWM warned me that I *may* loose root access if I select no, but I had no idea what would happen if I selected it, so I selected yes (keep root), and my phone rebooted.
After that, my phone booted and when I checked, it was still on 4.3.
I went on the XDA thread: [INFO] Nexus 5 OTA Help-Desk. It told me in order to update (Section C), I must uninstall Xposed Framework, and then just flash the OTA.zip how you would normally.
But now it becomes tricky, as I can't uninstall Xposed because I'm not rooted.
So why don't you just do Scenario #1? Because I have CWM which won't let me apply the update from adb (or at least I don't know how to)
So why don't you use Scenario #2? Because I'm not rooted but can get into CWM.
So what am I supposed to do now? How will I get my SU back, along with root permissions? Do I have to reroot? Please help!
I understand this may be a no-brainer for people who actually know about rooting and recoveries, but my head is hurting right now trying to work this out, so a step by step would be helpful. I found that other threads would say like "oh just do this!" and what they mean is a bunch of steps to reach that point. Thanks A LOT!

I'm sorry if I sound like a total noob, but how would you do that?! Is there something you have to download and then put it on your device and then flash it? Do you have a download link?

Check the thread named "unlock bootloader and root" which is linked in my signature. You should get the download link and steps to be followed from there.
You were rooted previously, right? Forgot the steps already?

[Q] Help please! Exclamation Point!

I got the 2.3.5 Update OTA on my One-click-root Nexus and applied the update, but now I'm stuck on the android/exclamation point screen.
What do I do??

That's the stock recovery - hold power and hit vol up to get the menu.
I've been doing that, but nothing happens.
I did a battery pull, and it rebooted in 2.3.4
So what am I doing wrong? Do I need to change something before trying the update again?
Hold power and slide from volume down to volume up. But that wont do u any good you need to flash a custom recovery and reflash super user.

So I goofed something up on my phone?
Is there a way to do this without losing all my app info/game saves?
I was going to run a TItanium backup.
And sorry, I'm a total noob with this.
ROM Manager, would I flash an older ROM or the ClockworkMod Recovery?
At that point could i just install the update and re root with Shabby Penguin's one click and then get all my app data back from Titanium backup?

Nothing is goofed up if you rebooted into 2.3.4.
The update did not apply. Did you receive the OTA or download it manually?
If you are unlocked just flash CWM via fastboot and apply it from there.
If you are locked then you can go back into the stock recovery, hold power down and hit vol up (in that order) to get the menu and apply the update. You may want to ensure it is in the root of the sdcard and named update.zip.
The OTA does not wipe nor is a wipe necessary, so you shouldn't be losing any data/apps.
I got the update OTA, but not it's not asking me if I want to apply it.
I'm sorry I'm such a noob here, but step wise.
If I boot up with Vol UP, I can then go to Recovery and get to ClockWork Recovery.
From there do I just hit update from SD card?

Yeah, choose apply update. Choose your zip from the SD card and apply.
It will go through a series of asserts and then apply if it passes. If you've modified any of the checked system files, boot image or kernel it's likely going to fail.
Well, I didn't alter any of them on purpose
I used Shabby Penguin's one click root so I could use Titanium Backup only. (Although now I'll probably add tethering to the list) So I don't think I changed any kernel files.
It's saying it can't find the file. Whatever downloaded must have gotten deleted somehow. I may just download the update and do it myself like everyone else.
Just to clarify. I place the update.zip in the root and select apply update on the ClockWorkMod Recovery, and that's it?
I was waiting to just get the update OTA organically hoping it would avoid these problems, lol.

In CWM use the choose zip file from SD card option, then you can pick the file regardless of it's name.
That's it - if you are stock (other than rooting) it should apply without any issues.
You may need to reflash CWM and delete /etc/install-recovery.sh to keep CWM installed. I haven't looked at the update itself to see if it is installing the script to reflash the stock recovery.
I had this problem too. I rebooted and its back to 2.3.4. I will attempt to go to 2.3.5 today once I have more time and post my findings here. If anyone has any success please keep updating this thread.
It looks like I have to reflash CWM in order to restore Super User.
My bootloader is still unlocked, but it won't let me run/install CWM. How do I do this?
Jagar, I did finally figure this out after reading through the code in the rooting .bat that Shabby Penguin put together.
basically his file has the Clockwork Recovery image that you need.
Boot up in bootloader.
then type
fastboot flash recovery ______.img whatever image you have.
Then select RECOVERY on the bootloader menu and now you can install the superuser.zip file to re-root.
you might wanna just run the new one click again, make sure its version 2.0.. it will do teh dirty work for ya
Seriously Shabby, big props to you for automating that process. I learned much more from your code than reading through all those other posts
@gnuf99 although you succeeded in getting root , please do read the guides abt adb and fastboot. This will be always handy for you, indifferent of the device you'll use later.

[Q] Rooted Now OTA

I apologize if I am on the incorrect area to post this.
I have a fully permanently rooted Verizon HTC ONE M8 and I have twrp recovery installed.
Now I am being prompted to do an update which appeared today. My questions are as follows:
1. Will I lose root?
2. If I do an update is it possible the procedures to re-root like I did may not work?
3. Will I lose the firewater s-off? Will it work again?
4. and lastly how do I prevent this phone for prompting for OTA updates.
Thank you all for all the answers, and in advance if I am posting in the incorrect area.

There are now a number of threads about this now, but here's the short version:
1. No.
2. Yes; Weaksauce still works, as does Firewater.
3. No; at least so far, once you are S-OFF you continue to be S-OFF. (There's one thread that indicates jcase was already aware of the pending update, which is dated close to release day for the handset anyway).
4. Go into \cache\fumo and rename otapkg.zip otapkg.zip.bak.
And, I've read elsewhere here that there should be flashable zips for the important stuff within 24 hours. You don't think the devs would let something like this slip, do you?

Rerun weaksauce; run Superuser. Follow the instructions in that thread. Should be good to go.

Tried that, no luck. Weak Sauce says I'm already rooted but when I open SuperSU I get the message that there is no SU binary installed and SuperSU cannot install it.
Thanks
thanks for the responses. If you have links to discussions as mention, please post them.
Thanks again.
adb reboot bootloader
From Bootloader screen, run:
fastboot flash recovery twrprecovery.img
^this is assuming your recovery is in the same folder as your adb/fastboot and named twrprecovery.img. If the file is named something else, use that in place of twrprecovery.img.
Once that flashes, select hboot from your phone's Bootloader screen, then pick recovery. You should then be in TWRP. Reboot system.
It might hang at the Vzw splash screen. If so, hold volume up and power at the same time. Should reboot into system with root.

[Q] HELP Lost root and cannot get it back

Yesterday I rooted my nexus 5 following a guide from teamandroid website for android 4.4.2. Everything went okay and I was able to root it.
Then today I wanted to experiment with xposed framework but realized that I didn't have a recovery when I tried to make a backup. So first I tried installing TWRP through Goomanager but for some reason it would fail after the download. So I decided to install CWM touch trough fastboot. So I installed it and then did a backup. The problem came when I tried to exit. A message appeared and it said "ROM may flash stock recovery on boot. Fix?". I pressed yes, and then it told me something like "Root may have been lost. Try to get it back?" and pressed yes again. I rebooted and thats when supersu dissapear.
I panicked and tried to do the same procedure fro the guide again to get root. I repeated every single step but it wasn't succesful. I thought that maybe CWM was causing the problem so I installed TWRP trough fastboot and did the root process one more time. But again supersu just wouldn't appear back.
I really don't know what else to do. Everything in the stock ROM works fine but I just can't root my phone again. Does anyone know what I can do?
PS: Im not a native speaker.
just flash the latest supersu in your recovery, that is all. did you really search?

[Q] 4.4.3 Update

Hello everybody.
First of all, I'm not sure whether this is the place to post this kind of questions. My apologies in advance. Here is my problem.
I rooted my nexus 5 nearly after a month of having bought it using the nexus root toolkit. Today I received the 4.4.3 OTA, and somewhere I read that it would fail most likely. I also read read that I should set survival mode in SuperSU (a pro option) in order to retain root access, which I couldn't. I tried to update via the OTA thinking it would fail, and it worked, only that I lost my root access.
Is there an easy way to regain root access? I don't want to wipe and re-install everything. There are only a few apps I use that need root access, however it would be nice to have them back, nevertheless.
Thanks in advance.
PS: Now I am able to record video hassle-free, no more static noise in the background :victory:

Thanks for your reply. I have already SuperSU on my phone, but when I press it it says there are some binaries missing. Busybox doesn't update the binaries since it has no root access and says the device might be improperly rooted. My recovery is TWRP, so I can actully flash root files or such.
Edit: I just tried to boot into recovery and it didn't work quite well. There is a fallen android guy with a red triangle. So I don't have recovery either it seems.

Download TWRP 2.7.1.0 from here: http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hammerhead
Reboot to bootloader, fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
Flash SuperSU with TWRP.
If you do not understand these instructions, I highly suggest reading this sticky: http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...ide-nexus-5-how-to-unlock-bootloader-t2507905

OTA updates question

Still running stock OS and have been waiting for Nougat update. Now that it's out, I have two questions before attempting root:
1) Are rooting method posted in the forum sticky still valid? By that I mean, has anyone actually tried it on Nougat?
2) Once rooted, will OTA updates still work?
I realize question 2 calls for speculation, but knowledgeable feedback is appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Okay as for question 1 just ensure you follow all steps listed in autoprime topic @ here, just make sure you read the last few pages. Some people were having trouble keeping root and twrp after following the step of rebooting to recovery. Instead you need to skip that step. You should just be able to flash that zip them the SuperSU zip (make sure the output says it's actually replacing files, etc. or it didn't really work). If flashing supersu didn't work follow my steps listed at above mentioned thread. If you don't want to wipe data you don't have to, just me I always wipe. Also make sure you delete the recovery from boot.p file in system folder from twrp before rebooting.
As to question 2, it would be speculation but I highly doubt that ota would work if you root or have twrp. Mainly because you will have a modified boot.img and recovery.img therefore it should fail. Also, even if it somehow would work, I wouldn't recommend taking ota once rooted and twrp as it could cause bootloops or other issues and would probably end up in Los of root and twrp.

Thanks, that kind of confirms what I was already thinking with OTA updates not working. I'm still hesitant to try root until I can get a confirmation of it working on Android 7. This is my daily driver and I can't risk a problem. Been there, done that. Lol

Root works without issue on 7. I'm running stock 7.0 rooted with twrp. Also running dual boot so besides stock I'm running cm14.1 and RR 7.1... If you already have root and twrp just follow directions on that post (just do not reboot to recovery like it says in the op of that post). Also if you end up messing up the steps and lose root and twrp there is a way to get it back, by using recowvery method also listed in that thread.
