[Q] HELP Lost root and cannot get it back - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday I rooted my nexus 5 following a guide from teamandroid website for android 4.4.2. Everything went okay and I was able to root it.
Then today I wanted to experiment with xposed framework but realized that I didn't have a recovery when I tried to make a backup. So first I tried installing TWRP through Goomanager but for some reason it would fail after the download. So I decided to install CWM touch trough fastboot. So I installed it and then did a backup. The problem came when I tried to exit. A message appeared and it said "ROM may flash stock recovery on boot. Fix?". I pressed yes, and then it told me something like "Root may have been lost. Try to get it back?" and pressed yes again. I rebooted and thats when supersu dissapear.
I panicked and tried to do the same procedure fro the guide again to get root. I repeated every single step but it wasn't succesful. I thought that maybe CWM was causing the problem so I installed TWRP trough fastboot and did the root process one more time. But again supersu just wouldn't appear back.
I really don't know what else to do. Everything in the stock ROM works fine but I just can't root my phone again. Does anyone know what I can do?
PS: Im not a native speaker.

just flash the latest supersu in your recovery, that is all. did you really search?

[Q] Issue with CWM v3.0.2.5

Hi all,
I recently unlocked my VZW Xoom using the OEM unlock instructions found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967065
I then downloaded the most recent CWM (3.025) and followed the instructions found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038870
I was able to write CWM to the recovery partition with no errors showing in either ADB or on the device itself. I verified the checksum of recovery.img.
What happens now is that when I reboot to recovery from ADB, the red Moto logo shows up, and at first everything looks good. At the top it says "Reading ODM fuse 1".
Then, a green Android logo with a yellow exclamation mark on it appears over a black screen. It looks like some sort of error message. I have CWM on my phone so I know this isn't what it's supposed to look like
In any case, has anyone else seen this issue (or better yet, know how to fix it)? I should point out that after a few minutes, the Xoom automatically boots into HC and works just fine.
it kind of sounds like the recovery didn't flash. Have you tried to flash it again?

Hi - thanks for the response.
Yes, I've tried that, rebooted the device, rebooted the PC, tried it again, etc. Still no dice
does it still boot? if so try installing rom manager and using it to flash CWR

Yep, it still boots. I've never used ROM manager, but I did happen to just download it. I'll give that a shot.
Two other things I didn't mention in the OP:
- I do not have an SD Card in the slot.
- I also didn't 'root' the phone yet with the SuperUser APK, only unlocked the bootloader. Would either of those cause the issue?
I believe you have to root to flash recovery. Here is an easy way to do it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011196 its the one click method just make sure your not doing anything else while running

Already in the works I'll let you know how it turns out.
Initially, it seems odd that ADB/fastboot wouldn't return an error if root is needed for flashing recovery. Time will tell...

Root was the answer. Duh. I feel dumb now.
Either way, once I get to 10 posts, I can post in the dev forum thread to make it clear that root, not just OEM unlock, is required to flash CWM so that dummies like me can get things working quickly
nice, glad that you got it working.
Be sure to install Tiamat 1.31 so you can use your SD card and get full access to CWM
Rom Manager question
Has anyone found a way to allow Rom Manager to "Manage Backups"? It appears that it isn't pointing to the correct directory/ folder.
Had the same issues after installing CWM from ROM Manager - used the adb method instead and this fixed the issue. (Xoom was already rooted and OEM unlocked)

[Q] PLEASE HELP: Lost root when trying to (unsuccessfully) update my N5?

Hi, this is my first post so bear with me if I did something wrong.
I got the notification to update my Nexus 5 (OTA) to 4.4.4. I stupidly agreed to update it and whatya know? I lost root. Here's the break down of what happened:
CWM asked me if it wanted to flash the stock recovery or keep CWM (the actual message was: ROM may flash stock recovery on boot, NO or YES. Along side yes it told me that selecting yes would keep CWM). I selected yes.
Then, in the next page, CWM warned me that I *may* loose root access if I select no, but I had no idea what would happen if I selected it, so I selected yes (keep root), and my phone rebooted.
After that, my phone booted and when I checked, it was still on 4.3.
I went on the XDA thread: [INFO] Nexus 5 OTA Help-Desk. It told me in order to update (Section C), I must uninstall Xposed Framework, and then just flash the OTA.zip how you would normally.
But now it becomes tricky, as I can't uninstall Xposed because I'm not rooted.
So why don't you just do Scenario #1? Because I have CWM which won't let me apply the update from adb (or at least I don't know how to)
So why don't you use Scenario #2? Because I'm not rooted but can get into CWM.
So what am I supposed to do now? How will I get my SU back, along with root permissions? Do I have to reroot? Please help!
I understand this may be a no-brainer for people who actually know about rooting and recoveries, but my head is hurting right now trying to work this out, so a step by step would be helpful. I found that other threads would say like "oh just do this!" and what they mean is a bunch of steps to reach that point. Thanks A LOT!

Check the thread named "unlock bootloader and root" which is linked in my signature. You should get the download link and steps to be followed from there.
You were rooted previously, right? Forgot the steps already?

About Root in 05Q

Hello guys!!!, Today I get the new OTA with the firmware 05Q and I install it. I see in the forum a version of 05Q rooted LINK HERE
I only want to ask if anyone know another way of get root actually or if I should wait until our amazing toolkits for 1+1 get updated.
Thanks i nadvance!!! :cyclops:
You can gain root following, This thread. If you already have a custom recovery install, might be easier to install the pre-rooted 05QA. I went the second route.
P.S. That toolkit will root 05QA, just does not have the new firmware to go back to stock.
I have a custom recovery installed ofc, if I install the pre-rooted 05Q I lost all my data and apps? Should I do a factory reset? Thanks for your fast answer mate!!

If you have custom recovery installed. Do a back up first. You should not have to wipe or lose anything.

Really thanks again mate!! I do it, like you, as soon as possible.
Wait guys, all you need to do is flash SuperSU from your custom recovery. That's it, nothing more.
@rraquib, why on earth would you tell him to flash the entire ROM again??

You said that flashing entire ROM would be easier, it isn't. All that's need to get root is to flash the SuperSU zip. He's already on 05Q so flashing the ROM zip is completely and utterly pointless. It's like telling someone who's run out of petrol to install a entirely new petrol tank that's full of petrol (when all that's actually needed is the fuel).
It doesn't matter what someone thinks might be the solution, if you're going to answer in the q&a section you need to give the best and easiest solution.
The thing is flashing update-supersu is not working... for me at least. I updated OTA.. After installation finished, rebooted to TWRP and tried to install update-supersuv2.37.zip...
It doesn't show any error, but when I reboot my phone there is no supersu installed ( actually there is one but it's greyed out with android icon and not showing up on application list )

Sorry guys for donĀ“t answer your comments, I have been working out of my country for a couple of weeks.
I get root on 05Q with just flashing SuperSU 2.46 from recovery. Easy and fast, just that.
Anyway you have my thanks in your respective buttons.

6.0.1 ota with stock rooted 6.0

My v10 downloaded an OTA , which im assuming is 6.0
1. Im rooted on stock 6.0 and unlocked boot loader. Will the OTA work without messing up anything ? Ill have to root again im sure, just want some info before i pull the trigger.
I don't think the update will even proceed being that you're on a rooted ROM. I have that notification too, and i just don't know how to turn it off.
I to am rooted, unlockboot and stock rom. I don't feel like taking a chance. So I used titanium backup to freeze the software update and in the drop down notification if you press it, it's a notification from Google play services if you block it in apps it will disappear from your drop down. I also deleted the update zip in the cache folder.I used es file explorer ,device/cache/update

Okay, I'm assuming you are on H90120e (system version). There is a root exploit for the H90120j update. You just do the following:
Make a backup of your apps and settings
Flash your phone to the new update (H90120j)?
Take a look at either one of these threads to root your device again:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-lg-v10/general/step-step-guide-rooting-lg-v10-using-t3382631
OR
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-lg-v10/general/root-android-6-0-h901-t3382819
You can't flash the phone that is already rooted and has TWRP.
I am in this same situation. On stock rom with root and twrp. I want to update to the new update, but do not want to loose all my apps, settings, etc.
Question is, how to do the initial update before having to re-root again?
How do we flash the phone with the new update?

Why can't you flash the phone that is already rooted and has TWRP?
All you are doing is opening the LGUP tool and flashing the new H90120j .kdz file using the "refurbish" option then flashing the H90120j .tot file that has TWRP using the "update" option which will flash the phone regardless of what is running on your phone. The guides on the first link explain that. I believe your concern is keeping all of your settings and apps. Look up Titanium backup, it works for me.
Thank you. I only flash the LGH901AT-01-V20j-310-260-JUL-12-2016-ARB02+0ROOTTWRP tot file and all is good.
Well except that I lost Dolby audio.
I will look for a fix.

There's a guide in general that tells how to do all this. In fact jun19inf WROTE it.
In a nutshell, do a twrp backup.
Upgrade to 20j by flashing the stock 20j kbz.
Enable usb debugging and oem unlock
flash tot that has twrp in it.
Now you can go into twrp and 1) root via supersu 2) restore ONLY data from your twrp backup taken previously to get your apps etc back. Alternatively Titanium Backup will also do just fine.

If all is you have is root, you should be able to unroot in the SuperSU settings, and then let the update install. But if you have TWRP, then I can't see any way to do the update without using a PC to flash your phone back to stock ROM and recovery. Although you may check the dev. section to see if Eliminator has a flashable ROM to bring you up to date.

Hi all. I just got my factory warranty back and I attempted to root it. Everything went as it should, until just after the install finished. Instead of rebooting normally, it now will only reboot into TWRP. Once there, when I try to flash a custom ROM (in this case, Bliss, but I don't think it matters, I get an error message that says the zip file is corrupt. Then, while still in recovery, when I tried to wipe everything except the sd card, it says mkfs.fat process ended with error. I then powered down and attempted the factory reset. I scrolled down on both screens and it did not say anything about any errors, so I assumed it took. However, it reboots right back into TWRP recovery. It also boots right to TWRP recovery when I try to boot normally. Of course, adb does not recognize the phone in any mode that I can get into (fastboot/recovery/download), so, I can't use LG Bridge to reflash the original firmware. Does anybody have any ideas for a fix? I know that this replacement phone had 6.0 on it. I thought I did everything to a t? TIA...
OK, not sure how I got there, but when I attempt to reboot from TWRP it says No OS Installed! Are you sure you want to reboot? That at least says what the problem is. Does anybody know how to fix this?
Where can I download the update file?

Can some one guide me on the following:
1. Can I flash back and downgrade to Software version V20J from V20L.

1. It is well explained in this forum, you CANNOT go back without facing a software brick.
2. You can root your phone through Dirty_Cow method or by flash Eliminater74 ROM (Part1 & Part2).
Again, search for that in this section and in development one...

You unlocked your bootloader before, right?
seems the original recovery is working, and not twrp.
after boot loader unlock you flashed TWRP via fastboot?
Yeah first thing i did was unlock the bootloader , then proceeded to root. i've installed a custom rom too ( Lineage os)...but i just can't seem to get into TWRP when rebooting , even with the button combo. the files for TWRP are on my tablet but i just can't access it. i followed this guide

Don t know how old the twrp is? Can t try it now, cause our web protection blocked the site.
I use always the last recovery from official twrp site
https://twrp.me/devices/nvidiahshieldtablet.html
Steps.
-bootloader unlock.
-'fastboot flash recovery /place/of/your/recovery'
after that you can flash custom roms and/or root with supersu or magisk..
If you did not start TWRP, how could you flash linageos?

Once i flashed TWRP it automatically put me into it after a few seconds, but then when i rebooted or asked to be put into recovery it gave me the no command line, the version of TWRP was old and i just installed the latest one like you mentioned and now it's working again. thanks for replying though, it might help someone else out in the same position.
Just one last question, do i need Xposed for Magisk ? i'm on nougat and haven't seen much about it apart from an unnoficial release.

maybe you wait for official xposed. what modules are you looking for?
there are many alternatives and/or magisk modules that can do some work ..
I only missed gravitybox cause of customisation of the statusbar and xprivacy..
don t tried the early xposed, cause there is no need for me.
but your problem was solved? good
