[Q] Rooted Now OTA

I apologize if I am on the incorrect area to post this.
I have a fully permanently rooted Verizon HTC ONE M8 and I have twrp recovery installed.
Now I am being prompted to do an update which appeared today. My questions are as follows:
1. Will I lose root?
2. If I do an update is it possible the procedures to re-root like I did may not work?
3. Will I lose the firewater s-off? Will it work again?
4. and lastly how do I prevent this phone for prompting for OTA updates.
Thank you all for all the answers, and in advance if I am posting in the incorrect area.

There are now a number of threads about this now, but here's the short version:
1. No.
2. Yes; Weaksauce still works, as does Firewater.
3. No; at least so far, once you are S-OFF you continue to be S-OFF. (There's one thread that indicates jcase was already aware of the pending update, which is dated close to release day for the handset anyway).
4. Go into \cache\fumo and rename otapkg.zip otapkg.zip.bak.
And, I've read elsewhere here that there should be flashable zips for the important stuff within 24 hours. You don't think the devs would let something like this slip, do you?

Rerun weaksauce; run Superuser. Follow the instructions in that thread. Should be good to go.

Tried that, no luck. Weak Sauce says I'm already rooted but when I open SuperSU I get the message that there is no SU binary installed and SuperSU cannot install it.

adb reboot bootloader
From Bootloader screen, run:
fastboot flash recovery twrprecovery.img
^this is assuming your recovery is in the same folder as your adb/fastboot and named twrprecovery.img. If the file is named something else, use that in place of twrprecovery.img.
Once that flashes, select hboot from your phone's Bootloader screen, then pick recovery. You should then be in TWRP. Reboot system.
It might hang at the Vzw splash screen. If so, hold volume up and power at the same time. Should reboot into system with root.

[Q] PLEASE HELP: Lost root when trying to (unsuccessfully) update my N5?

Hi, this is my first post so bear with me if I did something wrong.
I got the notification to update my Nexus 5 (OTA) to 4.4.4. I stupidly agreed to update it and whatya know? I lost root. Here's the break down of what happened:
CWM asked me if it wanted to flash the stock recovery or keep CWM (the actual message was: ROM may flash stock recovery on boot, NO or YES. Along side yes it told me that selecting yes would keep CWM). I selected yes.
Then, in the next page, CWM warned me that I *may* loose root access if I select no, but I had no idea what would happen if I selected it, so I selected yes (keep root), and my phone rebooted.
After that, my phone booted and when I checked, it was still on 4.3.
I went on the XDA thread: [INFO] Nexus 5 OTA Help-Desk. It told me in order to update (Section C), I must uninstall Xposed Framework, and then just flash the OTA.zip how you would normally.
But now it becomes tricky, as I can't uninstall Xposed because I'm not rooted.
So why don't you just do Scenario #1? Because I have CWM which won't let me apply the update from adb (or at least I don't know how to)
So why don't you use Scenario #2? Because I'm not rooted but can get into CWM.
So what am I supposed to do now? How will I get my SU back, along with root permissions? Do I have to reroot? Please help!
I understand this may be a no-brainer for people who actually know about rooting and recoveries, but my head is hurting right now trying to work this out, so a step by step would be helpful. I found that other threads would say like "oh just do this!" and what they mean is a bunch of steps to reach that point. Thanks A LOT!

I'm sorry if I sound like a total noob, but how would you do that?! Is there something you have to download and then put it on your device and then flash it? Do you have a download link?

Check the thread named "unlock bootloader and root" which is linked in my signature. You should get the download link and steps to be followed from there.
You were rooted previously, right? Forgot the steps already?

5.0.1 update lost root and recovery

Just downloaded and flashed the full OTA from the Nvidia website in CWM. After it updated it asked me if I wanted to keep root (because it lost it during the update), and I said yes but after rebooting the tablet I cannot get into custom recovery or have root access (can't get it with TowelRoot on 5.0.1)
Is there any painless way that I can get the recovery and SU flashed without wiping the device?

Only way to achieve root and and recovery is go back and do the adb flash recovery n root deal.

Yes mate. Download the cwm recovery. Also the latest SuperSU.zip from Chainfire. Reboot into boot loader. Then run from adb (whilst connected by USB and have copied the recovery.IMG into the same directory as adb/fastboot) fastboot boot recovery.img then flash the supersu.zip and reboot. You keep official recovery and get root. Worked for me. Easier and less trouble than it sounds.

If you want to keep custom recovery then once done the above return to bootloader and run: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Could you post that link for me? I've literally spent 30 minutes trying to look for it on the NVIDIA website. I can only find their 1.2.0 and 1.2.1 versions.
(I know I can easily find a user uploaded copy here, but that's besides the point. I just need to know where to grab it on the official website for next time.)

I have my M8 with S-OFF (Paid for Sunshine) and it is temporarily rooted with KingRoot. I'm just confused on what I need to do next to get fully rooted so I can start flashing some ROMS! I tried to install TWRP with the app but it doesn't seem to work and it just boots into the standard recovery mode and NOT TWRP.
So, where do I go after having S-OFF and temp root?
I would greatly appreciate anybodies help here, I've rooted several devices before but nothing has been harder or more confusing then rooting the m8 on 5.0.1!

I'm having trouble finding some good directions on that stuff...

I'm trying to run the WinDroid program to flash twrp, it reboots the phone into fastboot but then WinDroid just says rebooting device and doesn't seem to get passed that. Should I just wait?

Shouldn't use apps like that. Just flash it with fastboot manually.

This is where I'm not finding any good directions for these steps, as far as how to do the command prompts.

MTN, I know this can be frustrating for a newbie. There are plenty of walkthroughs, and I'm sure everyone else will tell you to google, but for the sake of being concise, here's the scoop:
1. Make sure you have ADB installed.
2. Go to your ADB prompt and make sure your device is showing up (need the HTC drivers installed) by doing:
adb devices
3. Reboot into fastboot:
adb reboot bootloader
4. Flash TWRP:
fastboot flash recovery twrp####.zip
5. Once you've got TWRP installed, you reboot INTO TWRP (full recovery) and let it patch your system because if you don't it will be overwritten. As follows:
- Reboot with VolDwn held.
- From bootloader, pick "recovery".
- Wait for TWRP to come up.
6. Once TWRP is in, drop supersu package ZIP (get the latest one, careful here!) into a directory, boot into TWRP, and install it.
Boom, your device is completely rooted.
But I think that the thing that you need to understand is that "rooted" only applies to the current ROM. Rooting isn't a magic thing - it simply means that you have root privilege on the current OS. It is separate from firmware, bootloader, etc. which all also have to be flashed/loaded/updated depending on what you are doing. There probably ought to be a newbie page somewhere that explains to people what each thing is. The ROM is essentially the same as whatever version of windows/linux/etc. you have on your home computer. It has nothing to do with the hardware, the firmware, or the bootloader.
On my phone, I followed the above procedure, but then proceeded to download and install a clean ROM that was pre-rooted. Then later I put back the stock Verizon ROM and had to reapply root. I then later removed root to return the phone to verizon for service. But I didn't uninstall Root, I simply flashed on a non-rooted ROM.
Does that make sense?

Most up to date rooting method for HTC A9?

Hi, I rooted my a9 back in May right around when 6.0.1 came out. Long story short, my device just gave up the ghost after a nasty interaction between the screen and concrete, so now I have a new device being shipped tomorrow. I figured the first thing I'll do is let it run any updates / OTAs it might have to get it up to date then attempt to root again.
I've been looking around for the past several hours trying to determine what the correct rooting method might be now given Nougat's rollout, but I haven't come across anything truly definitive yet. If anyone could enlighten me on what I'll need to do now to root this new version I'd be very appreciative.

Just got the phone today and updated to 7.0 (software version 2.18.651.2) Still searching around and not seeing a definitive answer on whether or not the old method for rooting works for this or not. I'm hesitant to attempt it without knowing, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Last time I rooted, I used Windroid toolkid to unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP and apply SU. I'm wondering, would the same program work if I replaced the recovery.img file in the Data folder with the TWRP 3.0.3 unofficial recovery I saw floating around in here for nougat?

You can unlock it on the HTCDEV website, although if you've already got it unlocked I doubt you need to do it again. To root I just ADB fastboot flashed TWRP 3.0.3-4, then used that to flash Magisk, mounting system read only. I'm fairly sure some people are using Su on Nougat, so it'll probably work.
Never used the Windroid toolkit so I can't comment on that, but I've also never minded typing commands to the prompt. I'd imagine if you gave it the right TWRP it'd flash it OK..

From what I see, after i run the command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" i boot into TWRP and then proceed to do a factory reset and wipe the cache, presumably to remove the encryption iirc, then install the supersu.zip is that still the correct procedure, or does this require mounting the system as read only now?

IS this correct or am I missing something?

I'm about to start the process trying to root using the above methods.. I'll post again when I have results.

It wasn't bad at all. The reason I mounted R/O is because I'm using Magisk and not disabling dm-verity. I'm not sure if it works the same on 7, but SuperSu should disable dm-verity, so if you're using it you might not need to mount R/O, I haven't been keeping up on that at all. Benefits of Magisk include Android Pay and being able to take an OTA.
That all sounds like exactly what you need to do, except I believe it's fastboot mode (the one with the black screen?) to flash TWRP. I also didn't have to format anything, but I believe you do if you're using Su and disabling forced encryption. You may want to take a system image backup before you change anything, so you can go back to stock and get an OTA, or in case something goes wrong, but other than that it sounds correct to me.

huh... Magisk can utilize android pay and OTA's? I'm a little bit intrigued.. I just might have to give that a quick look now. Was it difficult to get up and running, and is there a fairly decent guide for doing it?

Magisk is a framework for systemlessly modifying /system, so safety net works and you can take an OTA (with stock recovery), and also includes root. It's brilliant, but not quite as powerful as Xposed. Not difficult at all to get running, all it needs is to flash the magisk installer zip in TWRP (system mounted R/O of course) and then install the Magisk Manager app from the play store.

I might give this a shot then, thank you for that. I'm about to try flashing TWRP 3.0.3-0. From the looks of it this is the most current one available. I'll update when it's done

Go to the TWRP thread, hit the download tab, pick one of the newer ones there. I went with 3.0.3.-4.

Did just that. Got TWRP installed successfully. I PM'ed you a second ago but I might as well ask this here for everyone else to see in case someone else is wondering this too.... So if I'm understanding Magisk correctly, all I do now is hit install and choose Magisk v11.1?
Edit: I did just that, but it doesnt seem to have done anything.. I dont see and magisk apps, and root checker says i'm not rooted.. Did I miss something?
edit 2: scratch that... I just installed the magisk manager app from the playstore.. according to it, the latest version of magisk is in fact, installed, and it's rooted with magisksu (despite not showing so in rootchecker).. Little confused now. Is that everything that needs to be done?

I'm glad you got it working. Strange you had to flash phh's Su separately though. Anyway, glad I could help.

Well Working !
1.Backup your all imp data from internal memory
2.Flash TWRP 3.0.3-4.. Do not reboot into system and enter into Recovery TWRP..
3.Do a factory Reset via TWRP.. Do not reboot into system
4.Now flash SuperSU 2.79 SR3 via TWRP.. Finally Reboot into system..
*2 bootloops are common, do not give up for at least 3 bootloops..
*It will take a long time to boot as you have done a factory reset.. So be patient and wait for at least half hour..

Thanks! I got it more or less and went with magisk. Couldn't pass up a chance to have root and still get OTAs and use android pay. I'm still monkeying around trying to figure out how to use it to get liveboot back up and running.
