Just downloaded and flashed the full OTA from the Nvidia website in CWM. After it updated it asked me if I wanted to keep root (because it lost it during the update), and I said yes but after rebooting the tablet I cannot get into custom recovery or have root access (can't get it with TowelRoot on 5.0.1)
Is there any painless way that I can get the recovery and SU flashed without wiping the device?
Cheers in advance
Only way to achieve root and and recovery is go back and do the adb flash recovery n root deal.

Yes mate. Download the cwm recovery. Also the latest SuperSU.zip from Chainfire. Reboot into boot loader. Then run from adb (whilst connected by USB and have copied the recovery.IMG into the same directory as adb/fastboot) fastboot boot recovery.img then flash the supersu.zip and reboot. You keep official recovery and get root. Worked for me. Easier and less trouble than it sounds.
Recovery here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2921222&d=1409611452
Latest SuperSU here: http://download.chainfire.eu/644/SuperSU/BETA-SuperSU-v2.42.zip
If you want to keep custom recovery then once done the above return to bootloader and run: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Could you post that link for me? I've literally spent 30 minutes trying to look for it on the NVIDIA website. I can only find their 1.2.0 and 1.2.1 versions.
(I know I can easily find a user uploaded copy here, but that's besides the point. I just need to know where to grab it on the official website for next time.)

Sick. Thanks for the link. Thanked both of you. About to flash wx_na_do (32GB LTE model) on my shield, then root it and install PhilZ.
Next we need kernels. Going to start coding.

As I have no succes in installing the OTA update for my A700, and cant get the solution offered somewhere else here to work, i have a question:
Is it possible to lock an unlocked A700 again? After which - i think - it should be able to install the OTA.
Anyone here knows if this is possible?
I was in the same situation, until I flashed an emea_cus1 version. I hope you get this answered, or someone comes up with a flashable pa_cus1 version.
Consider this a bump...
Sent from my A700 using XDA Premium HD app
Can you or anyone tell me what is the difference between emea_cus1 & pa_cus1 versions?
As above, anyone with flashable pa_cus1 version?
i heard that 'unlock' is unrecoverable. Maybe it's work if you can use Flash Tool to flash the whole system by computer.
but there'r no any resources available by now.
I had to do this myself a couple days back so I could return to stock. I made this quick link-list.
1. Get Android SDK & the official Acer USB Drivers http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html http://support.acer.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=4318
2. Unlock the bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710755
3. Install Clockwork Recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1791165
- I had to install this recovery.img using the BAT file from this post. IMPORTANT! DO NOT INSTALL THE recovery.img FROM THAT LINK! It will brick you. Replace it with the one from the thread above (6.0.1.0).
4. Download the appropriate ROM for your device. You'll want the first CUS1 as it is 1.0.29: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1729692
5. Follow the directions in this link. If you can't get update.zip to run from an external SD (I couldn't) then try it from the root directory of your internal SD (I just noticed the post was updated after I messaged him). http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...m.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812635
After you've done it all, be sure to choose "NO" when you reboot the system from CWM, otherwise CWM is still going to be there and you're probably going to be unable to get future updates.
It took me about two hours of trial and error to figure all this out, and in the end my bootloader was relocked, my root was unrooted, and I was on stock 1.0.29 and able to get OTA updates.

Thanks for your answer. Now I just am left with one question. I have image version Acer_AV043_A700_1.026.00_WW_GEN1
The CUS1 you mention can be flashed over that without a problem, after which I should be able to use the OTA from Acer?

Whoops..I originally posted this on another forum where someone asked the same question. They had the US tablet. Get the appropriate file for your country/device. After you flash your country's stock, you will be able to get OTA updates. This relocks and unroots your device back like new.

i need to take my a701 back to acer so i have flashed my a701 back to ICS with Acer_AV043_A701_1.015.00_WW_GEN1 (got from somewhere in this forum i think, i forgot ... sorry). the process went without any trouble.
but my bootloader is still unlock.
when i try the fastboot oem lock .. it showed the lock lock and the door icon on the display ... choose the lock ... and the display show "Please wait.."
wait for more than half an hour .. still "Please wait" and i decided to turnoff the device.
my question is how long does it take to relock (fastboot oem lock) the bootloader? please advice. Thanks
Hi there everyone,
I have a huge problem. Last night i bricked my xoom. I was following a tutorial on this forum. and after unlocking the bootloader it told to flash a file called boot.img after doing so and typing fastboot reboot, the device wouldnt start behind the motorola logo. i tried allot of thing and also did flash some other stock android 4.0.4 boot.img files now with the last one mentioned i managed to get the xoom (wifi) to boot a little further. because the ripple movie with the motorola logo is shown. but it stucks at that movie.
Does anyone know if i can flash an image on the xoom that will atleast fix the problem of not rebooting so i can try another tutorial.
I have searched the internet for solutions, many of them linked to threads on this forum. but almost all download links in these tutorials are old and broken.
Can someone please help me unbrick my device? And maybe a link to a good working unroot tutorial for my xoom wifi with android 4.0.4.
Try get back to Stock.
Download from HERE
and do some OTA updates afterwards so everything will be up to date.
Then wipe and try again from scratch..
Worked for me perfectly just a few days ago.
If you can still get into fastboot, then its not bricked.
Get some stock images and flash them via fastboot and you'll be fine.

Indeed it worked. i downloaded the official images and flashed them im on android 3.0.1 again and all seems to work just fine now.
Next problem is i cant find a descent tutorial on this forum how to root the xoom. all download links are either removed due to copyright issues or the links are just broken.
How does it work actually?
1. I unlocked the boot loader wich is very easy.
but then? Do i need to flash a rooted image over the existing? i dont really understand how this works. I rooted my Desire HD with a good tutorial in minutes. Not many people seems to really know how to root the Xoom.
Also i would like to know if the different tutorials are for different android versions or can i aply all tutorials of rooting when i stay on android 3.0.1?
I also tried to flash a recovery.img to the recovery partition and press volume down 3 seconds after the moto logo apears but when i do i get an android robot with a big " ! " on his belly and it takes 5 minutes to load the menu. when im in it tells me there is no sdcard present when i try to flash a rooted rom (zip file).
Is there someone reading this thats willin to explain to me how to do a root the easiest way? Please if links are posted be sure everything on that thread is working. Im pretty sure i will pull it off with some push in the right direction.
Thank you!
(edit) omg im stupid, offcourse the sdcard wont work... it never worked at 3.0.1. on the xoom. can i follow this tutorial:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/451-how-to-root-the-wifi-only-xoom-301/
Could someone read over it and see if this is a good tutorial? last time i flashed a boot.img the whole xoom got stuck... is that because i had the wrong boot.img on the wrong android version? or should boot.img always work?
Do you plan on flashing to a custom rom after rooting? If so, you can just skip rooting altogether.
I say this because I'm not particularly familiar with that rooting method you linked (though reading through it, it makes sense, all its doing is pushing the necessary files for root access to the xoom via adb). I used a rooting script flashed through a custom recovery over a year ago - unfortunately the download link seems to be broken (I might have a copy at home).
So there's a few things you can do:
1. If you just want a custom rom - download the rom zip file and store on your device. Flash TWRP (my preferred recovery) in fastboot. Boot into TWRP and flash the rom zip file.
2. If you want stock OS root access -
a) Follow those steps you linked and see what happens. If things go wrong, you should be able to just flash those stock images again.
b) Wait for me to get home and see if I have the root script. You'll need to flash a custom recovery though in order to use it.

Ok thanks for your answer. Ill try to unroot with that method flashing directly to the recovery.img i also know now what i did wrong. i flashed the recovery.img not to the recovery partition but to the boot partition LOL. thats why the xoom didnt boot anymore
I see allot about Nightlies Eos, 4.1.1. is that a good rom? Does it look like the stock version?
eos 4.1.1 is simply awesome and its also pre rooted' so your bootloader is unlocked, all you gotta do now is install twrp recovery via fastboot ( my preffered recovery) then flash eos via recovery

EOS is a pretty AOSP rom. No theme, though you can apply one if you like and change a few colors. There are various toggle additions you can add that make the user experience much better. It also comes with an overclockable kernel and is very very stable (despite being a nightly) The team has been supporting the Xoom for over a year and is very committed to the Xoom.

As for flashing, just gotta make sure your text is good before hitting the enter key. Recovery flash should look something like this:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Some instructions for flashing can be found here
While that page is specifically for locking and flashing to return to stock, the commands are universal for fastboot. Hell, if you wanted to, you could manually restore a nandroid backup via fastboot and flashing images.

It's not a problem. It can take up to 2-3 months for updates to roll out completely to all regions and serial numbers.
Yeah, I dont have it either.
I do know it takes time though
which is why most of the time we force it with a ROM update

I don't know if you did it, but you won't get the update once you unlocked the bootloader and rooted your tab.
....That wouldn't prevent the OTA from being showing as available and downloading, though. It just prevents install. That can be remedied, though...I was rooted and unlocked and just returned to stock to get the last OTA.

Can you please post how you returned the bootloader to stock, or "locked" ? My A700 is rooted and unlocked. I can "hide" the root with OTA Rootkeeper, but I am not sure how to return the unlocked bootloader back to stock.
Any help is much appreciated and thanks in advance!
Even though this worked for me, you should still do this at your own risk....I'm not an expert, I just got lucky.

3. Install Clockwork Recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1791165
- I had to install this (6.0.1.4) recovery.img using the BAT file from this post. IMPORTANT! DO NOT INSTALL THE recovery.img FROM THAT (5.5.0.4) LINK! It will brick you. Replace it with the one from the first thread above ( CWM v.6.0.1.4).
4. Download the appropriate FULL ROM for your device. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720157

Thanks! I was able to get the 1.0.29 flashed back and have stock bootloader with no root. I did NOT install CWM because I am going to wait for JB before I do any root or recovery modes. I am looking to try to find the Acer ROM AV043.RV23RC03_PA_CUS1 ROM because it was what I had on the tablet and was an update over 1.0.29. If you know where I can get it, I would appreciate it. I can't find it anywhere!- Thanks again!
First of all, I have been reading this forum for about two weeks and just registered in order to get some help as I do not want to break my one week old nexus 5.
From my reading, the updates can be done in quite different ways and because of that I want to be sure what I should do.
I started by:
- root the mobile with cf-auto root. It did everything for me, got the superuser icon automatically
- installed clockwork mod and I have the custom recovery. By the way, I made a backup with it but where was it written? I want to copy it to my pc.
- other than that, I have installed some root only apps like rom manager, greenify, root Explorer, etc. I supported those developers with purchase. Those guys deserve it.
Anyway, i am looking for the safe way to update to 4.4.1. I read some members saying they lost root after the update, others lost something else (I am referring to the thread on nexus 5 general forum).
Can you help me? What path shall I go? Thanks a lot.
To update you'll basically have to go back to stock in a way. By that I mean you can either flash the System.img file from the Factory Image and then update using the update files for 4.4.1 by flashing it in recovery (via Sideload) and then just root again. OR you can install an updated "Stock" 4.4.1 image from the development section and root that.

i sense i am getting somewhere but how do i do that? i am new to this and been reading a lot but the first time all seems very vague. i need a little more help from you!
lets assume i want to just apply the 4.4.1 update (maybe this is the easiest way for now). how do i do it?
also, after the update succeds, i need to root again correct? what happens to all the apps i have right now with root permissions? do they stop working until i root again and give them root privileges again? can i use the cf auto root again?
also, i am on ART, i thought of letting you know since that can cause some problems updating(??)

If you want to apply the new update it all depends on your current setup. I gave you vague options because I don't know what you've done to your phone. If you've only rooted and not changed any of the files in system then it's easy to just flash the update with the recovery. You can download the update and then start recovery (look it up). Once in recovery start ADB sideload and connect to your PC (this assumes you already have working ADB, if not.... look it up ). To sideload you just need to adb sideload filename.zip. You can probably use WugFresh's Toolkit to also sideload but I generally don't use those so dunno what they do these days. Much easier to learn and understand what it does then do it yourself.
If you have a custom recovery you might just be able to flash the update with the recovery like you normally flash any zip in recovery.

thanks for the reply. i am reading on the adb sideload right now... i already have the update zip inside the platform tools. however, in the command prompt, it says my device is unauthorized (i have both the usb debugging and unknown sources ticked). the nexus 5 is connected as MTP.
any clues?
about what i have done to my nexus, i applied the cf autoroot, installed clockwork mod... nothing much besides some play store apps..
as for this paragraph:
"If you have a custom recovery you might just be able to flash the update with the recovery like you normally flash any zip in recovery. "
i have never done it, hence all these questions!

You do it from Recovery. So just copy the file to the phone in some folder. You can't update the phone with it running. So reboot to CWM and then choose Install from ZIP then find the file on your storage and then choose update. That may or may not work as I said depending.

You can just copy it, no need to use ADB but this is why it's good to know how to use ADB.

thanks for the reply. i am reading on the adb sideload right now... i already have the update zip inside the platform tools. however, in the command prompt, it says my device is unauthorized (i have both the usb debugging and unknown sources ticked). the nexus 5 is connected as MTP.
any clues?
about what i have done to my nexus, i applied the cf autoroot, installed clockwork mod... nothing much besides some play store apps..
as for this paragraph:
"If you have a custom recovery you might just be able to flash the update with the recovery like you normally flash any zip in recovery. "
i have never done it, hence all these questions!

You do it from Recovery. So just copy the file to the phone in some folder. You can't update the phone with it running. So reboot to CWM and then choose Install from ZIP then find the file on your storage and then choose update. That may or may not work as I said depending.

Plenty of these questions around... check them out first.

yes, i have been reading those topics and many others.. i managed to solve the adb device unauthorized anyway. just flashed the 4.4.1 zip file under clockwork mod recover.. android is upgrading at the moment. lets see if everything is work as it should.
No need to sideload adb bla bla..
copy the OTA zip into the phone, and just flash it in CWM (install file from internal storage).. 1 minute and done.
You'll get error status 7 at checking if you changed something in system (apart from rooting), else you shouldn't have any problem.

yes, everything is fine. 4.4.1 loaded fine without any errors. i have root checker and when i tested, it says i do not have proper root access. i also lost my clockwork mod recovery.
i am now checking into it to see what needs to be done to gain root access again and get the custom recovery as it was before the update.

You need to flash the recovery again via fastboot (youll lose it every time, unless you flash the flashable recovery ZIP just after flashing the OTA and before rebooting the phone). You'll have this problem every OTA unless you flash the zipped version everytime.
I'd recommend the easy way to root, get the SuperSU binaries and flash them through the custom recovery and you're done..

You'd only be looking for the supersu binaries, since you already have the recovery IMG from te previous time, right? (the one that you need for fastboot).
EDIT: Yes, IMG files are for fastboot, ZIP files for recovery.

That's the stock recovery, you can't do nothing from there.
You need to flash the recovery via fastboot (didn't you do that the first time to get your custom recovery..?)
Check this tutorial mate: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507905

from where can i get the flashable clokwork mod recovery zip file?
i am going to apply the 4.4.2 update now and will be doing it this way:
from the recovery apply the 4.4.2 zip. after this apply the supersu zip. i want to install the custom recovery zip too so when the phone restarts everything will be configured. is this possible?

well, it seems i haven't lost my custom recovery. was it because i installed the supersu before rebooting?
Hello everybody.
First of all, I'm not sure whether this is the place to post this kind of questions. My apologies in advance. Here is my problem.
I rooted my nexus 5 nearly after a month of having bought it using the nexus root toolkit. Today I received the 4.4.3 OTA, and somewhere I read that it would fail most likely. I also read read that I should set survival mode in SuperSU (a pro option) in order to retain root access, which I couldn't. I tried to update via the OTA thinking it would fail, and it worked, only that I lost my root access.
Is there an easy way to regain root access? I don't want to wipe and re-install everything. There are only a few apps I use that need root access, however it would be nice to have them back, nevertheless.
Thanks in advance.
PS: Now I am able to record video hassle-free, no more static noise in the background :victory:

So dump SuperSU zip on the phone (link in sig), and flash it with recovery.

Thanks for your reply. I have already SuperSU on my phone, but when I press it it says there are some binaries missing. Busybox doesn't update the binaries since it has no root access and says the device might be improperly rooted. My recovery is TWRP, so I can actully flash root files or such.
Edit: I just tried to boot into recovery and it didn't work quite well. There is a fallen android guy with a red triangle. So I don't have recovery either it seems.
