[FIRMWARE 4.4.2] VRUDNE1 full wipe tar + NE1 Update Zip - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

For d2vzw SCH-I535 ONLY
This is the official tar ball for VRUDNE1. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS FILE UNLESS YOU ARE 100% SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. Any locked bootloaders are not my fault.
THIS WILL LOCK YOUR BOOTLOADER FOREVER
4.4.2 VRUDNE1 full wipe tar download HERE
No Wipe HERE
4.4.2 Update Zip
For reasons that should be obvious I recommend not to update yet unless you really cant wait. This zip was ripped out of the ota download folder I have not applied it myself so use at your own risk.
There has been successful upgrades using this update zip.
I am assuming you must be on a untouched version of nc1 for this to work (no root) apply update zip in stock recovery.
Download the 4.4 update zip from HERE

i played the stupid card and softbricked my S3. i was in a curious mood and wanted to go back to a fresh 4.3 to get to a fresh 4.4.2. is there anyway for me to unbrick it with or without losing my data (preferrably losing because i want a fresh start). Does anybody know when a tar will be ready or when the file will be available through the Verizon Repair Assistant?

Thanks @ThePagel! Can't wait for the Tar file

I'm on the newest clean Rom but badly want tw kit Kat. I don't care about losing the ability to flash aosp or flash kernels. So when the tar comes out I will be able to just load that into Odin and put on my phone?

You really can't wait a few more days for a new CleanROM?
Are you really that desperate to permanently lock down your phone in such a way that only a hard-wired JTAG procedure can undo?
If you lock your bootloader, you are stuck with SafeStrap and needlessly wasting space on your phone to accommodate ROM slots.

My understanding is that this is going to be similar to the gs4 where there are frankenkernels and frankenroms hacked together to keep our bootloader unlocked. This isn't as reliable as the straight kernel. Correct me if I'm wrong that was just the impression I got.

This is FUD. You've been misled. Custom roms do not touch unlocked bootloaders or require exotic engineering to keep things that way.
If you've unlocked your bootloader anytime within the past 2 years, you're set. You don't need to do anything. Just don't take the damn OTA. You should be on a custom rom or have already disabled such OTA functionality manually. If you take the OTA, you are screwed no matter what.
There's no frankenkernels or frankenroms. If you want to make a rom based on the update for normal folks who were smart enough to keep their bootloader unlocked, you simply remove the bootloader files altogether from the OTA tar/zip and begin customizing. You can use the stock kernel or compile your own using the source Samsung provided. For the poor souls who are locked down, they are stuck with the stock kernel and SafeStrap. Only thing they can modify is the system partitions they create.
There's nothing "franken" about either approach.
The only people with weird bootloader configurations are those who dipped in and out of OTA sequencing. Maybe their SBL or RPM/TZ partitions are stuck at LF2 or something just as ancient.
Ideally, every binary partition should be at firmware MF1 except for the aboot at LE6. My modem is at ML1 for the hell of it since flashing modems (even from the locked down 4.3 OTA) is safe.
tl;dr The unlocked rom scene is not impacted by Knox or anything OTAs lock down. It exists outside of the walled garden Verizon and Samsung are trying to create.

Well thanks for enlightening me! I will hold out until one of or beloved devs cook up a rom.

I'm currently on the S5 as my daily driver but I bought an S3 again a few months ago as a backup phone/desk clock if something happens to my daily. It's really nice to see how far this device progressed over this time (it beat a Nexus as far as OS updates...namely Galaxy Nexus) so I just had to get it again after hearing it would get KitKat. From 4.0.4 all the way to 4.4.2 now. That is a beautiful thing to experience. :good:

Unlocked bootloader

So if i unlock my bootloader will i be able to take the JB OTA when it arrives? If not how do i restore the locked bootloader? Also what if my phone has issues.. Would vzw notice i have this?
Sorry if these r dumb questions. I am not 100% on unlocking it.

Adam outler specifically stated to not do any ota's after unlocking the bootloader...besides the devs will bring us updates faster than ota anyways. Im not 100% but Adam has a stock bootloader.tar posted in the op of his thread. I believe you would flash that in the bootloader function of odin and that will relock your bootloader...now I am not 100% on this, hopefully others will confirm!
The stock bootloader and firmware flash should do the trick to take updates according to Adam himself in the unlock bootloader post. No guarantee you will ever be able to get it unlocked again though.
Also, CyanogenMod team have already switched to working on the CM10 (jellybean) non-kexec version for Verizon now according to the project status page. I wouldn't take Verizon OTA anyway, don't really want the dumbed down no local search that Apple is forcing on us with their patents.
So I should be able to flash any rom i want now? Also what recovery should I use? Stock/CWM/or TWRP? At least for the CM10s

First you should wait until Devs start releasing Roms and kernels that take advantage of the unlocked bootloader. If you are this unfamiliar with things, just relax and wait for some new/updated Roms to come out that have clear instructions for you. Don't rush into things and brick your phone because you don't fully understand what you are doing.

At this point it's not the recovery but the lack of unlocked bootloader roms (non kexec) for vzws3. I've used rom manager and ez recovery with the s3 with great success.

The only big difference between cwm 6 and previous versions is its support for kexec, but otherwise does the same thing and can be used for any of the Roms we already have (from what I understand. I tried finding the original thread i read that on but came up short so if I'm wrong someone please correct me as I don't want to spread false information).
And honestly I'm sure almost every rom will be updated within 24 hours to reflect this if not sooner and development will be full steam ahead! Just beware of an OTA cause you know Verizon is not gonna be happy we broke out of their sphere of influence. You can prolly guarantee this "issue" will be towards the top of their to-do list.

even if you unlock the bootloader and are worried about OTA's just install clockwork mod or team win. the custom recovery will stop the installation of the files. last line of defense as some phones will download and OTA and install it regardless of what you do (rezound, thunderbolt, etc)

As long as there are still kexec roms out there, you'll still need a kexec recovery to flash them. If you know for sure you won't be using kexec, use whatever you want except for stock. Don't ever flash the stock recovery unless you're mailing it off to Verizon.

That isn't strictly true. CWM 6.x has a couple of nice features that CWM 5.8.x doesn't, like the deduplication technique to save you space when you have multiple backups. You're right though, in that if you're happy with CWM, there's no reason to switch after unlocking.

The OTA's also fail once they boot into recovery if the stock recovery isn't there. So it's not likely you'll get a forced OTA that works.

Any reason to unlock the bootloader?

If I'm not big on flashing roms at the moment, is there any good reason to unlock the bootloader? The only benefit I've read so far is that booting up is a bit faster.
Also, seeing as how rooting and unrooting is pretty easy without the use of odin/flashing, is there a way to re-lock the bootloader without odin (in case an OTA update comes along the way)?
Any OTAs that come along are likely to break the insecure bootloader.
If you ever intend to use custom ROMs I would suggest not accepting any OTAs regardless.
Download ez unlock from the market to lock and re-lock.

To answer your question, there is no reason unless you want to flash a ROM with a custom kernel (eg CM or AOKP).
You can backup your bootloader and restore using terminal / dd, and I think some of 'one click' tools also are doing this now sounds like.

Yes, if you took the 4.3 OTA and try to flash an older stock build, you will brick your phone. As it stands right now, if you took the OTA you can root it, but you are still stuck on that stock ROM.

As of right now if you took the OTA update to Android 4.3 your hopes of doing anything custom other than rooting your phone are hopeless.
In order to flash a ROM such as Android 4.4.X aka KitKat you need a custom recovery manager. To be able to flash anything the first thing you need is an unlocked bootloader. The OTA update has locked the bootloader down so that you if you were to try and install CWM or TWRP recovery as soon as you boot into recovery mode you are going to get a Yellow Triangle that says "Verizon has detected unauthorized software on this phone, please turn off your phone and take it in to your nearest Verizon Store.
If you turn off your phone and power it back on you will keep getting that message...
The only way around it is to boot into Download Mode -> Vol Down + HOME for 2 Seconds then hit Power (if i remember correctly). After you boot into download mode you can then boot your phone back up regularly.
If you have made the mistake of trying to put a custom recovery on your phone you can put the stock recovery back on your SGS3 (stock recovery is better than no recovery) by downloading the recovery image and overwriting your custom recovery with the command "dd" in Android Terminal Emulator. For this to work you must be rooted.
Here is a link to the tutorial which shows you how to write the stock bootloader and stock recovery back to your Verizon (d2vzw) SGS3 in case you have made this mistake...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581166
In that thread pay close attention to the 2nd post as it shows you the commands to use to write your stock recovery or stock bootloader back to your phone.
I know it sucks that we can't put custom ROM's or a custom recovery (this hurts the most!) on our Verizon phone for now at least...
COME ON VERIZON EMPLOYEES! LEAK THE UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER! WE WONT TELL!
Maybe we will get lucky and some international version will come out and we can use that...
I remember awhile back that ASUS locked their bootloader on their Transformer tablet and you could request it from ASUS and they made you fill out this form saying that you understood by unlocking your bootloader you could not make a claim for a warranty. Why can't Verizon do that!?
I pray someone works this out eventually...

That would still require you to have a custom recovery. Also that would still most likely brick your phone cause the only 4.4 ROMS are AOSP based, meaning it installs a different kernel than the stock one. Thus when when the phone would boot up it would check the the kernels signature and would brick upon not finding one.
So I guess all hopes of finding a way around this are hopeless...for now. If u remember, a few months ago, President Obama signed a bill for Verizon Wireless to monitor all cell phone activity without the consent of the user, in conjunction with the NSA. I suspect that this is the reason why only Verizon has opted to completely lock down the bootloader because it contains code embedded in the bootloader (or partitions pertaining to bootloaders, aboot, and such) that allow National Security Agencies to implement spyware and tracking or listening programs. This is a testament to the sub-communist movement that is slowly taking hold in this so-called "free" society that was brought forth by our forefathers.
But back on subject - I just upgraded from a HTC Thunderbolt to SGS3 because most development for the Thunderbolt was few and far between. Upon purchasing my shiny new device, this Abomination of Android that is 4.3 was already being OTA'd. Had I known then....man, had I known then. It's a sad time for superusers all-over Verizon's crummy wireless empire.

And most of them say specifically that they are for unlocked bootloaders or not compatible with safestrap. Is there some trick I need to know to flash these roms in safestrap on 4.3 with a locked bootloader?

[Q] Switching to Cyanogenmod on 4.3 Verizon Galaxy S3

Hey guys, new to the whole Android modding stuff so, go easy because my knowledge about all the technical stuff is pretty limited.
So, anyway, I got tired of Touchwiz and I want to switch to Cyanogenmod just because I like the stock Android look and dislike the general slowness of Touchwiz. Problem is, I took the stupid OTA 4.3 update which apparently added the Knox bootloader which is, as far as I have read, impossible to unlock at this point.
I was under the impression that, with the Knox bootloader, its impossible to have a custom ROM since it will brick your device, but these threads :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2575977
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541343
Seem to indicate that all the Knox bootloader does is prevent downgrading the bootloader and also voids the warranty if you tamper with your device. Well, my warranty expire a couple months ago so I couldn't care less. But now I'm really confused. Can I, or can I not flash Cyanogenmod on my 4.3 Verizon Galaxy S3 assuming I don't care about the warranty?
You will brick your fone flashing any type of custom recovery or roms will brick you fone. U can root ur fone from my understanding from other threads but thats it

Like what was said above, you can't install any custom roms.
Knox is not responsible for locking the bootloader, it's only a flag that is triggered when root is achieved. Think of it like a flash counter that can't be undone. It has nothing to do with this.
The problem is the bootloader that was also updated. Every step in the chain has to be on the VRUCML1 base or the phone will brick itself and terminate the boot. Since our previous unlock method was to modify a step in the bootloader to unlock it, it can't be done the same way on the new base because it isn't able to be modified.
Any attempt to unlock it by any means or flashing a custom rom will change the bootloader. Safestrap is the only hope for the new base, or unless we're lucky enough to get a leaked unlocked bootloader.

So there's no way to do it all? No workarounds or anything of the sort? So I'm stuck with Touchwiz until someone cracks the current bootloader?

You can use xposed with modules that allow for a lot of customization, if you haven't used it before take a look at it.

I'm rooted on 4.3 without being flagged. Maybe its because I didn't try to root with anything other than safe root.

It really doesn't flag? Your warranty bit in download mode is still 0? Maybe saferoot bypasses it.

any progress?
Like the original poster, I am stuck on a touchWiz android 4.3 verizon gs3. I have been able to root it with safe root, but I have not had any luck rolling back to 4.1.2 or to unlock the bootloader. I have seen various "how to" type things that are supposed to work on 4.3, but like I said, no luck so far.
If someone more knowledgeable than myself has heard of a breakthrough in this area that would be awesome.

Sure, I tried this out yesterday, ended up soft bricking my phone, I was able to use Kies to get it back to stock though. I am suspicious that the how to may be bunk.

It's bunk for the Verizon S3. I have seen this link mentioned in another thread and BadUsername checked out the link and found it was for the International version of the S3, not ours.
I was running cm11 m3 on my vzw galaxy s3 but used odin to install VRUCML1 not knowing about Knox and all the fun that comes with that. Before I installed VRUCML1, I did a backup. I've since regained root access through saferoot but cant boot into a custom recovery without getting the "you've been naughty. go visit a verizon store" error message. Does anyone know of a way that I can restore my pre-VRUCML1 backup or am I out of luck since my bootloader is still locked?

There was a link for something like that posted some time ago here at XDA, and if it's the same link it is for the international version of the S3 not our Verizon version. The Verizon version cannot be flashed back to a previous firmware.

[Q] Wedged SCH-I535

Hi,
I just got my 4.3 update on the VZW SCH-I535 phone! Then I decided to try CM10.2 and didn't realize that my phone was re-locked because of the OTA update! Now my phone is stuck with the message "System software not authorized ..." To move past this issue, I have tried (and failed) the following:
- Tried to flash stock rom using ODIN (withSamsung-Updates.com-SCH-I535_VZW_1_20120705143513_fti2qg2lmf-stock-rom-4.0.3). It goes all the way through and I get a PASS! But after the phone reboots I get the "System error ... " again
- Tried to flash stock rom using ODIN with stock.vzw_root66.tar file and got the same result as above.
- I have also tried installing with Nand Erase All and Re-Partition checked, with PDA selected using the first rom, but I still get the same error
- I have read and tried some of the thread on this site with no luck either.
Any clue how I can get past this issue? Thanks for all your help in advance.

Yup, I took the OTA. Didn't realize that it would un-root. I have tried various things at this point to get it back, but nothing has worked so far. Now when I try to use ODIN to do a CF-Auto-root, i see the "Secure Check Fail: recovery", at the Downloading screen. Any suggestions?
Thanks.
To my knowlage I am the only one hosting the tar file you need. Samsung updates doesn't have it because the file hasn't been officially released other than ota. If this dosnt work for you try flashing the pit file with the tar. It is one of the last replys in this thread. Ill be posting links in the op later http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2586319

Turns out, after working with the ATT folks for a while, that the IMEI number that my phone has comes up incorrectly in their database. It shows up as a Samsung Tab. Checked with Samsung and my IMEI number is correct, so ATT will have to fix it on their end to get my phone to work correctly. I don't know why they make it so hard to migrate phones across service providers.
I've got my phone bugging to update but I haven't done it yet because I don't want to lose root. if I understand this right I can update and then re root with that download? or is there another method?

The only working root method is currently saferoot if you take the OTA. Personally I wouldn't take it. I'd suggest keeping your unlocked bootloader in tact and running a custom 4.3 rom.

You van root 4.3 after ota or that link, but if I was you I would try to use the ota first. If it works you will keep all installed apps and settings (but it might be buggy). If you follow that link you will loose current setup, apps and it will format internal sd (but it will be clean and hopefully bug free ). Make sure you are home with access to a pc before you try ota. If you changed to much of the workings of your phone the ota may not work or could even brick you. In that case you will need to use that link.

Honestly I'm glad I took the ota on accident. The past few weeks my phone has worked without a hitch. Some people just do not need custom ROMs and I think I am one of them. I'm pretty sure everyone who complains about how 4.3 is buggy and a battery hog just needs to use Odin to get a clean fresh start. I am disappointed that I can't install cyanogen when I turn this into my mp3 player after I get a new phone but its not like tw is bad. It just has a few annoying things that I can change with root access.
Off topic
I dnt hate tw ..I think is a good Rom in general .all that bloatware what got me to root and then lead to custom roms .like mention not everyone needs cuztom things.I do agree that a clean install of TW runs great .but I like options .and to each there own

OK I just installed safestrap and I kid you not the theme of wicked sensation made me swap back to my stock slot immediately. I'll use it all day tomorrow and tell you what differences I notice. Right off the bat it just looks like a ROM made from a recovery backup and customized with xposed. I can't wait for beans to make a 4.3 rom.

I like it, but it certainly doesn't have quite the same cleanliness as a good AOSP theme. It's all personal preference.
At least we know safestrap is working consistently.
