Hello everyone,
I'm the proud owner of a Nexus 4, probably just like you all who read my right now.
I'm really turned off by the prices at which all the motorcycle GPS are sold (they're waterproof) (ie : Tomtom Rider)
So I just thought to myself as you would expect "hey why wouldn't I use my Nexus 4 running Waze?!". Still there's the water(un)proofness of the device which makes me want to find a way to use it anyway.
There sure are some cases that are supposedly waterproof like the "ram mount aqua box 20". Yet, if i'm planning on a long ride, i'm really going to need to charge my phone. And the problem is that i'll have to open the case a little to let the cable in to charge (and I am now assuming that there is enough space to connect the cable at the bottom and close the case just around the wire... which is unlikely to be so.)
So I just thought to myself again "hey! why is it they haven't thought about a wireless charging, waterproof case?!"
That would solve the whole problem!
Has any of you lot ever heard about any such accessory for phones (even if not for the Nexus 4)?
(Oh and I'm really sorry about any english flaws you encountered in this message, I'm not an english native speaker. )
EDIT : For those who would have not got my point, this is what it could look like :

What problem??? Nexus 4 has qi wireless charging built in...why does the case need it, too? Just get any case, snap it on, and wireless charging should still work. If not, return the case and complain that it keeps wireless charging from working. But I can't honestly imagine a single case in existence doing this.
Know how I waterproof my phone?? A ziplock bag.

Hello and thank you for your reply.
I think you misunderstood what I was thinking of though.
I know that the Nexus 4 can be charged by Qi. But as far as I can tell, there are absolutely no "wirelessly" charging cases adapted to motorcycles.
I am just thinking about something like this :
on the top of which would be glued/fixed a totally waterproof case for the phone and the charging orb would have to be mounted to the handlebar with a system like this (for example) :
The big difference with a wire charging ordinary case is that you don't have to let any wire in the case, so there is absolutely no way for water to get inside the case.
It would basically look like this (with a FLAT and THIN Qi charger unlike this Nexus Orb) :
I understand that my english is ... well... not really all that good so if you want me to re-explain myself in another way, it's no big deal

You do not need a qi-capable case for Nexus 4...in fact, they don't even exist. This is because the phone already has the ability!! I think you are either using the wrong word for what you are describing, or you may be confused. There is no special case for this. It just works.

Okay I really think you're not getting my point  Thank you for your interest though! I'm going to try to say it in other words.
Alright i KNOW the Nexus 4 HAS already the Qi stock inside it. What i want to do is to charge it by Qi, trough the waterproof sealed case! So that not a single drop of water is able to leak inside the case, just because it's sealed!
So obviously the case itself, appart from being waterproof, has nothing special, The only thing we want from it is to be well fixed on to the Qi charger.

So you are just looking for a waterproof case, then?? I don't understand why all the confusing qi drawings were necessary...that's what confused me. I'll have a look, though, because I woukdn't mind having one either. I ride my bike a ton and I get caught in tghe rain a LOT more than anyone would expect. Like I said, I've always just used a zipper seal plastic bag up until now.
Most highly protective cases are too thick to operate Qi charging through. Just get a good case, run a wire through, use silicone sealant, and you'll be good.

i'm considering a RAM aquabox case and mounting system for my g2. has anyone here tried these boxes ? it will mainly be used on one of two motorcycles, but also bicycles.
musts:
waterproof to 5 or so feet, NOT WATER RESISTANT
touch friendly
ability to charge and/or access corded earbuds
not made of unobtainium (crazy expensive)
so, whatcha got ? please, only respond if you've actually USED the product you're commenting on.
thanks xda folk !
bumpity
hopefully someone will have some experience...
As far as I know, there's not one made especially for the G2/DZ.
I use this.
http://www.rei.com/product/808607/seattle-sports-dry-doc-waterproof-digi-case
It is most certainly waterproof to 5 feet, but as far as cord access, etc, this design doesn't permit cord access, but is touch friendly (sometimes its a little hard if your finger is wet, but it works)
After looking at the ram box, it will probably be your best bet, but I don't know anything about them.
I use this.
I don't know if this is waterproof to five feet (never tried) and it is definitely not cord friendly but it will certainly protect a phone from a serious South Florida rain storm. It is also touch friendly and works perfect with my Bluetooth headset. Did I mention how cost effective it is? Also, with a larger one the keyboard works great.
Let us know about the RAM box if you get one. It looks to be your best option.
You can't get a fully water proof solution that allows cables and plugs, but retains full functionality for this phone because of the keyboard.

i do that already. it's fairly inconvenient to stop, unzip pocket (motorcycle, remember? ), unzip ziplock, unlock phone, snap picture/gps/map/txt/whatever and then redo all the mess again.
i'm hoping one of the bags i found on ebay/amazon will be bar mountable, waterproof, and usable with gloves on. lol not too much to ask, right ?

You're out of luck on the glove thing. You need gloves that can conduct electricity since the screen is capacitative. 2 options that i know of is to use thermal paste on the tip of. Your gloves or sew in conductive threads into your glove's fingertips.
P.s just in case you dont know what capacitative is, wiki it. It'll explain why non conductive objects will not affect the screen.

i've used gloved fingers, through ziplock bags, and had very good results. aside the bag getting in the way, it worked fine. i understand some materials will prevent any response from the phone, but we're really not discussing theories, materials, or who/what/why.
i'm going to ask (very nicely) for folks to please stay on topic of a usable case as defined in the original request. cleaner threads, clearer heads.
lol sure. I guess your gloves do conduct electricity as it is, but on topic of waterproof cases, are you looking to use the keyboard or just the screen?
if so, then the ram box is more that enough for your use I think.
maybe http://store.androidandme.com/overboard-waterproof-case/4A104A7226.htm would work

i have no use for the physical keyboard when it's in the i-really-want-this-waterproof-and-a-little-bit-protected state on the bike.
ya, i've seen those. problem is it's basicly just a bag (unless i missed a picture showing a mount point).
the ram / aqua box setups look like they might be a winner. problems i haven't found a solution for:
can't easily and quickly remove the case from its mount to snap a picture WITHOUT removing the phone from the case. i should have included this in the wishlist. also, the cases don't provide for punch through of headphone and charging chords.
i think with your criteria you might have to have it custom made/fabricated.
I did quite abit of searching around on ebay, google, amazon, etc and I dont think I came across something that can fit your criteria. Sorry man. Hopefully you can find a suitable solution.

I ride my bicycle to work everyday, 7.23miles one way. I wanted to find me a case for my G2, which after looking everywhere I ended up buying this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/iPHONE4-3G-3GS-BICYCLE-CYCLE-BIKE-CASE-MOUNT-WATERPROOF-/330553700814
Which works flawlessly, except for ONE MAJOR issue. I live in central Texas, and it gets over 100 degrees down here. Our phones are like big heat bricks which uses "PASSIVE" cooling to cool off. Any waterproof case might seem like a good idea in reality is bad for our phones. After a short 35min ride, my phone ended shutting off because it got too HOT!
I wanna invent one that has a small intake air vent somewhere with one of those really small CPU fans hooked to a small solar panels (you know the ones they self at Fry's thats a few inches long that can recharge your phone) that I can attach somewhere else on my bike. This little setup may not be waterproof but water-resistant.

I got tired of waiting for a charger next to the bed. I came across this on Amazon:
http://goo.gl/TCXCw
Its the Samsung desktop charger. If you look at the image of it,it fits my nexus 4 perfectly.
My first thought was... hmm I plan on a case yet too. The thing is, the phone sits a bit forward so I think there is enough clearance on the back of the phone. I have my case coming ( http://goo.gl/tHhAo ) on Monday. Even if its a bit tight on the left and right side of phone, I could always take the dremel to the sides of the cradle a bit. I do not think it will require much shaved off.
It sits really nice in the dock and is very stable. Plus I put a nice NFC tag on it so it does all the auto stuff as soon as I slip it it.

Can you please please please report back when you get your case and let us know how it goes? Looking for a cheap solution like this to use at work but I'm also using this case: http://goo.gl/HfhhW
I sprung for the fancy panasonic wireless charger for home/bedside but I'd like an upright dock at work to be able to use it as a clock/newsfeed/etc.
Thanks!
So if it fits perfectly without a case I'm figuring a bumper won't work here?
EDIT: Just saw that you mentioned that, I meant width wise since the bumper makes the phone noticeably wider.
I bought the same, works perfect, use the LG charger though, the dock bundled one is 700mah
One more thing, no cases will (probably) work with this, I use w/o case.
Another thing, if you want to do that math here're the dimensions infuse 4g dimension and nexus 4 dimensions
upon comparison, seems like galaxy s3 dimensions are close match too!
the case I ordered has shipped according to amazon. I will get a picture of the base with the phone on it (with the case).
I hope I will be able to just take a tiny bit off and it will work in the dock with the case. You have to love the dremel

I have the same dock (desktop version and a separate car version) and the Google bumper. They do not work together.
I'm wondering if a note 2 dock will work with a N4 with bumper case. I'll have to do the math
EDIT: well, the Note 2 is 80.5mm width, the N4 width with bumper is 74mm. It would wiggle in the cradle.

Wait ... I currently use an Infuse and have a car dock. Are you saying teh Nexus 4 will fit?
My Nexus 4 is on order and in theory should have arrived today. I'll report back ehre when I try it too, of course.
I was debating between the Nexus 4 and the S3, and did finally also order the S3 from AT&T by talking them into letting me upgrade early.
I KNOW the S3 fits the Infuse car dock, I've used a friend's, and it would be incredible if the Nexus 4 fits as well!
Just got mine and it's great! The phone slips in and our with ease and I don't care about the slower charging speed as the pine only goes in the dock at night (so I can use the phone as an alarm clock)

Xenomix. A brand from Korea which has really impressed me with it's quality of products. It's a pain to wait for the products from overseas, but it's well worth the wait IMO. My first product was a Xenomix car mount that can be used with BOTH my N4 and N7 with it's respective cases. Granted you cannot use the car mount with the N4 and charge at the same time, but I am ok with that sacrifice. Search for my threads on the Xenomix car mount in the Nexus 7 threads if you want to look at pics there.
Then I was sent a Xenomix stand. It's a generic phone or tablet stand meant for the Galaxy S3. I told the seller to send me one of those whereas I had an idea of using it for my mad scientist reasons lol.
This was before xmas so I knew I would be getting this by the middle of January, but alas, it came in today (1/10/13).
I excitedly ripped the packaging and I found the great generic phone stand. Inside the package was a bit of rubber that looked like it was a cut piece of the soft rubber from manufacturing but I figured I'd keep the piece just in case I needed it.
Next I slid the underside of the stand out. This is meant if you place a tablet in the stand to prevent it from tipping over or falling back due to the weight distribution. I slid the LG wireless charger in the stand.
Next I put the phone right on top of the charger and guess what?!?! It holds in place and charges!!!!! Remember that rubber piece I was referring to earlier? I used a glue stick and stuck the soft rubber piece (Same material used to hold the device in the stand-its really soft) in front and used it as a anchor mount. It's not needed, but it works! Check it....

The stand can be found only on ebay that I have seen. It's a generic Xenomix Smart desktop stand (in black or white) made for the galaxy tab or ipad. model SHG-DK100.
I forgot to initially mention that I have a Diztronic Ultra Hard Shell installed. I will try using TPU cases tomorrow to ensure that this setup can still be used with something a little more thicker like the Diztronic TPU case.

I did the same thing at home with the Energizer qi charger lol. I have another landscape version of the this dock for the Sensation and put the Energizer pad landscape as well so that the dock won't easily tip over. Then put a rubber band to keep the charger from slipping off and viola! Another ghetto rigged stand for viewing the phone in portrait rather than layin down lol. I can post pics for that too. Not that pretty either. LOL

Well the thread was initially created when I ghetto-fitted a dock to fit the LG pad, but looked really really tacky lol. This looks a bit more cleaned up and more like something I would buy if created lol.
For sake of saving face a bit, I just deleted the old pics and lil write up I did on the ghetto-fitted dock, I replaced it with the write up you see today .
Thank you!! I ended up picking up two of these docks and I'm now using them with my LG chargers. $30 for both stands and now I can use my charger as I always wanted. The cheapest charging stand I could find that had a decent angle was a Nokia on Amazon for $67 at only 750 mA. This solution was PERFECT for me! Thanks very much for posting!

Saw it on The Verge. I'm wondering if the magnets will be able to hold it up with a bumper on. The image shows that the diameter of the orb is larger than the width of the phone meaning a bumper would stop it from touching the base of the orb... meaning the magnets might not be as strong. I would much rather wait for a video review of peoples experience.
There are two other thread with the same information.

I really hope the magnets will still work when using a case
I'm going to go out on a limb here and speculate that the magnets will still work with the thin TPU cases out there. Reason being, the Nexus 4, when nude, is as slick as greased moose poo and is going to require a fair amount of magnetic pull to keep it from sliding off of the Orb. The TPU cases will probably lessen the pull, but will instead add additional friction, so I'm guessing they'll cancel each other out.
Pure speculation, but that's how I'm rationalizing buying one

I assume they made the OEM bumper the way it is (thin as heck with very little lip) so that it would work with the OEM wireless charger. Only makes sense, but I wouldn't put it past Google/LG to mess this up.
What is the Battery status app being displayed? maybe it comes up when connected to charger 0_o

I laughed at the moose poo! It really does try to slowly sneak towards and edge if you leave it on a glass table or tiled area. I've had a few near drops.
Does anyone else question the usefulness of wireless charging? I think it's quite cool and all that, but it's hardly like plugging in a micro usb cord is especially time consuming. Does anybody know if it charges faster than micro usb? This may be a silly question, but can you charge the phone using both the usb and charging org, in order to charge it quicker?

Hey guys. I ordered an orb and it should be here in the next few days. I am thinking about taking it apart and mounting the orb inside my bed side table. It's just made out of pine. I'm planning to router the under side of the table down to be only 1/8 - 1/16" thick so that there is very little for the charger to have to work through. I figure since wood is very porous and non conductive it should be able to do it. Has anyone tried this yet?
EDIT:
So I re-routered the wood down to just 0.020" thickness (approx 1/64") and it works! Here is a video of it in action:
whelp, im going to be the guinea pig on this one. here are my progress pics.
The end table (that I made 15 years ago in high school):

An area that I think will work well, approx 3x3" under the top of the table:
And after plunge routering the area out.
I left the wood thickness at about 0.080" which is roughly 3/32". As soon as the orb arrives this week I will see if it will charge through it, and if the gets hot, and if the rate of charge is affected by the wood.

Awesome!
Im pretty sure it will work perfectly

Re: Integrating orb charger into night stand.
It should probably work, but you could have bought a cheaper charger. The orb is quite expensive and there are much cheaper Qi chargers available

All the cheap ones seemed kinda sketchy, and the decent ones are either not available (in Canada) or cost the same/more anyways.
Edit:assuming it works well I'll probably pick up another charger to use in this project once the decent ones come down in price then I'll bring the orb to work.
Re: Integrating orb charger into night stand.
If this works, you are a genius. Well, you get credit either way for even thinking to try it. Please update and let us know if it works. What's better than setting your phone on the night stand and having it charge? Every one of my drops so far has occurred when the cord gets pulled and brings the phone off the nightstand with it.
cool DIY!
though it may be a waste to dismantle the Orb for this.
There is already some model designed for table charging. But if it charges through the wood surface, the idea of hidden charging pad is definately much cooler!
woot! my orb is shipped, left KY last night, in OH this morning. Scheduled to arrive Thursday!
This is a cool project, but if I were to do it, what I would try is dismantling a charger (orb works, I would use the LG charging pad), making room for it in the desk and just have it be exposed, making sure everything is level, then cover the entire top in 3M vinyl with a wood pattern. It is going to be REALLY difficult to make actual wood be thin enough, but I look forward to seeing how you manage it!

Ive looked high and low and can not find the LG WCP700 charging pad / ANY quality qi charger for less than the orb.
I think im going to keep the orb intact but maybe just remove the rubber part. I figure the thickness of the wood is less than that rubber piece and/or a TPU case so it should have little to no effect on it. Ill be using the official nexus bumper with just a rear screen protector to cut down on the amount of stuff that the charge has to pass through. Like I said though, I have already routered the wood is down to only 0.080" thickness which is already thinner than a standard TPU case that people are successfully charging through.
Its kinda funny - you can tell where the spot is from the top because it feels like the face of a drum. Once the charger is mounted under their though it should firm it up a bit... at least I hope. Kinda afraid to puncture through it. LOL.
also, my orb is now in Toledo OH... just 130mi away... would be sweet if it shows up early
I posted a similar question recently and didn't get much response.
To me, I want a landscape charging stand with NFC. The NFC is easy with a sticker-tag, and I currently have this cheap plastic stand that I put an NFC sticker on. The challenge is that I still have to plug my phone in, and the cord makes the landscape a bit wonky.
I was wondering if anyone had dismantled a wireless charger and inserted the pad/coils/whatever into the back of a landscape stand. Wood is obviously the easiest, but if someone has a 3D printer, you could get really fancy with it.
Interested to hear how you get by with your project, too, though.
Well the orb came in and I'm sad to report that it barely charges through 3/32" thickness of pine wood. You have to very exactly place it dead center for it to recognize it, and it charges really slow. I'm not done with this idea but it is back to the drawing board.
WORKS! Check out original post.

Saw the vid! Looks awesome! But I would need a NFC sticker or a X to mark the spot. And it would never work for me because I have stuff all over my nightstand lol.
I only also have a tv remote. I'm going to put some kind of mark to help locate it, but it works great otherwise. I also have the current widget and there is not a decrease in charging current either.
