Hey guys. I ordered an orb and it should be here in the next few days. I am thinking about taking it apart and mounting the orb inside my bed side table. It's just made out of pine. I'm planning to router the under side of the table down to be only 1/8 - 1/16" thick so that there is very little for the charger to have to work through. I figure since wood is very porous and non conductive it should be able to do it. Has anyone tried this yet?
EDIT:
So I re-routered the wood down to just 0.020" thickness (approx 1/64") and it works! Here is a video of it in action:
whelp, im going to be the guinea pig on this one. here are my progress pics.
The end table (that I made 15 years ago in high school):

An area that I think will work well, approx 3x3" under the top of the table:
And after plunge routering the area out.
I left the wood thickness at about 0.080" which is roughly 3/32". As soon as the orb arrives this week I will see if it will charge through it, and if the gets hot, and if the rate of charge is affected by the wood.
AW: Inductive charging through thin wood?

Awesome!
Im pretty sure it will work perfectly

It should probably work, but you could have bought a cheaper charger. The orb is quite expensive and there are much cheaper Qi chargers available

All the cheap ones seemed kinda sketchy, and the decent ones are either not available (in Canada) or cost the same/more anyways.
Edit:assuming it works well I'll probably pick up another charger to use in this project once the decent ones come down in price then I'll bring the orb to work.
Re: Integrating orb charger into night stand.
If this works, you are a genius. Well, you get credit either way for even thinking to try it. Please update and let us know if it works. What's better than setting your phone on the night stand and having it charge? Every one of my drops so far has occurred when the cord gets pulled and brings the phone off the nightstand with it.
cool DIY!
though it may be a waste to dismantle the Orb for this.
There is already some model designed for table charging. But if it charges through the wood surface, the idea of hidden charging pad is definately much cooler!
woot! my orb is shipped, left KY last night, in OH this morning. Scheduled to arrive Thursday!
This is a cool project, but if I were to do it, what I would try is dismantling a charger (orb works, I would use the LG charging pad), making room for it in the desk and just have it be exposed, making sure everything is level, then cover the entire top in 3M vinyl with a wood pattern. It is going to be REALLY difficult to make actual wood be thin enough, but I look forward to seeing how you manage it!

Ive looked high and low and can not find the LG WCP700 charging pad / ANY quality qi charger for less than the orb.
I think im going to keep the orb intact but maybe just remove the rubber part. I figure the thickness of the wood is less than that rubber piece and/or a TPU case so it should have little to no effect on it. Ill be using the official nexus bumper with just a rear screen protector to cut down on the amount of stuff that the charge has to pass through. Like I said though, I have already routered the wood is down to only 0.080" thickness which is already thinner than a standard TPU case that people are successfully charging through.
Its kinda funny - you can tell where the spot is from the top because it feels like the face of a drum. Once the charger is mounted under their though it should firm it up a bit... at least I hope. Kinda afraid to puncture through it. LOL.
also, my orb is now in Toledo OH... just 130mi away... would be sweet if it shows up early
I posted a similar question recently and didn't get much response.
To me, I want a landscape charging stand with NFC. The NFC is easy with a sticker-tag, and I currently have this cheap plastic stand that I put an NFC sticker on. The challenge is that I still have to plug my phone in, and the cord makes the landscape a bit wonky.
I was wondering if anyone had dismantled a wireless charger and inserted the pad/coils/whatever into the back of a landscape stand. Wood is obviously the easiest, but if someone has a 3D printer, you could get really fancy with it.
Interested to hear how you get by with your project, too, though.
Well the orb came in and I'm sad to report that it barely charges through 3/32" thickness of pine wood. You have to very exactly place it dead center for it to recognize it, and it charges really slow. I'm not done with this idea but it is back to the drawing board.
WORKS! Check out original post.

Saw the vid! Looks awesome! But I would need a NFC sticker or a X to mark the spot. And it would never work for me because I have stuff all over my nightstand lol.
I only also have a tv remote. I'm going to put some kind of mark to help locate it, but it works great otherwise. I also have the current widget and there is not a decrease in charging current either.

Got tired of waiting myself and ordered this a week or so ago. It was on my desk when I got home from work today finally. For its price and origin, it holds up pretty well, well at least the few hours I've tried it so far.
The suction cup had a plastic protective film, I removed the film, licked the cup and fastened it to the window. I gave it a few hard tugs and its on there pretty good. I look forward to seeing how it handles the Sun here in Phoenix.
Another good thing I like about it is, it is sturdy where its at. My universal dock for my G1 was flimsy and would move when I pushed the screen. This doesn't budge. Also the phone is securely locked in.
Only issues I'm having so far is I'm not used to using my index finger on the screen and I'm having issues but that's not related to the holder.

i Have that exact one, it is alright, except you can't rotate it at all, so the phone sits at an angle, and it scratched some of the teflon off the bottom of the phone. Maybe get some high grain sandpaper and make it a bit less sharp on the bottom left edge where it hold your phone.

I got the padded tilt/swivel mount. It's very nice, it has a felt type texture to it. It is very soft and will definitely never harm my precious Nexus One. It is very sturdy, and holds the phone securely. I can drive like a maniac and this puppy isn't budging one inch! It is in the perfect "navigation position" for my car. I couldn't be happier
Like I said, it was pricey, but the quality of the mount is well worth it. I've had those cheapy universal style mounts in the past and they're always pieces of ****. It's nice to have a NICE mount for my nice phone

Yup, the bottom is completely open to plug in a car charger. They make a mount with the charger built in too, but it adds on to the already expensive mount, and I already have a car charger, and they don't have a padded version, so I opted for this one
That mount looks solid, secure & good location. Unfortunately, proclipusa doesn't have a vent mount for my Benz

If you tilt the phone to landscape orientation, does it slide out of the mount?
It appears that it is a drop in mount, so I am worried that if it is landscape and I take a turn sharply, that sucker will fly out of there.
I have the version which has the built-in charger, not padded; I use it in landscape 90% of the time (and switching is trivial). The phone is held quite securely.
Mileage may vary on the padded version.
I guess I'm the opposite. I prefer my navigation to be in portrait mode. It allows you to see more of the upcoming roadway in front of you.
But I can tilt it to landscape and it'd be held in just fine as long as I didn't tilt it too far.
Re: n1 car dock? NEED A LINK...
can one of you guys, post a or the link from a online store were we can buy this kinds of accessories? a trusted one of course. and not tmobile, because i think only users from that operator, can buy in the omline store. At least you need to provide a tmobile phone number for the registration (i'm in Portugal, so i don't have one). I'm especially interested in the car dock in this post. best regards!

I'm curious which one felt better in your hands while typing with the hardware keyboard. If Mugen does I will order the Seidio battery and Mugen cover independently as I've had good experiences with this combo of parts on my Palm Previously.
Dude man like really. Why wasting my time wit you. Everyone knows seidio rules. Just look at their website they have everything then look at mugenpower and like they don't have all the accessories, they are the low down dirty skanks of the cell world
Also with mugenpower better get a condom for your phone as they are made in dirty conditions with slave labor from china

I just got my Seidio 3300 and must say the case for it is extremely uncomfortable in my hands. There are way too many hard angles which is really taking away from the the experience of using the phone itself. I ordered the Mugen cover from the link posted below and will be updating this post in a few days when I receive it.

Yeah, especially with the keyboard fix TheImpaler posted last night. Although I have become accustomed to the Epic's weight I have always found it to be a little light for my taste. Even after logging some decent time in with this Seidio cover I still don't like it. There is just way too much going on in the back not to be distracted by it. Having extra meat in the back also makes typing 5x easier. I'm thinking a thicker OE design will be just what the doctor ordered. Mugen did a good job on their covers for the Pre and hopefully they'll do justice to the Epic's design as well.
I don't really use the slide keyboard. I just like the idea of the same/similar curvature as stock.
I just got the Mugen cover and its spectacular. I had to shave the living hell out of the insides to get it to fit as it uses a thicker plastic than the Seidio but it was well worth the effort. I highly recommend it. Feels great in my hands.
Nice. Can you post a picture of the insides?
Lots of scraping with a pocket knife lol. I lined the edges of the battery with some chalk to see what areas needed shaving.

Cool. Thanks for that. How does it fit around the edges? Is it precise?
I'm OCD and my generic eBay cover bugs the heck out of me because it doesn't follow the phone perfectly. Hah
It took about three days to come from Colorado to Berkeley. No shipping confirmation was sent so don't get worried if you don't hear anything from Mugen.

It fits great. I'm OC too and spent an extra 20 minutes shaving it down so that everything was nice and tight. I took off maybe 1/16" off when all was said and done. I'll post pics of it once I get home.
Thanks. I placed my order the other day. Do you still like it?
It was a little too much for me to be carrying around as a daily driver. I didn't mind it with my Pre but the Epic was just too big for my preference. I'm keeping it around for roadtrips however incase I need some intensive GPS usage. I ended up going back to the stock battery and lucked out when my phone bricked on Vision's 1.2 kernel. The sales rep at Sprint was nice and slipped me a spare battery. The girth of the extended battery cover definitely made typing a little easier so I ordered a protective case off ebay. Some guy is selling the same (supposedly) cases that Sprint sells for dirt cheap. They're the ones made by Otterbox. I picked it up for $7 shipped.
So for you it's a size issue, not fit or finish?
Yeah, fit and finish are perfectly fine. Expect to be shaving for a loong time. I think a pocketknife will work best.
I just received mine about an hour ago. Interestingly, the fit & finish is fine as you said but I had to put a spacer inside...not dig it out. I cut a business card in quarters, folded one of them in half then taped it inside.
I don't know if that's because of my batteries being eBay cheapies, or variance in the cover.
My only real complaint is how tight it is once it's on. Those little tabs make removal extremely difficult. Folks who never or rarely change batteries might consider that a good thing.

Same here, it seemed a little loose, and when I shut my KB to hard, the phone reset. Took me a while to trace it back to the loose battery, as I didnt notice it for the most part until I went to check my phone and it was off

Yah, I use my license to slip under and edge to get it off the back, but it sure is a PITA otherwise.
Overall, I LOVE it (once I fixed the looseness of the battery)

Trying to get some feedback on build quality and performance with the htc car kit dock. Anyone get it yet? Pics? I'm leaning towards getting it since I have the N1 dock and like the look of it.

im curious on this as well. i like the look of it though the holder part looks like cheap easy-to-break plastic. is this so? and how well does it mount in vehicle. and is it easy to take on and off without needing screws or any damaging/invasive mounting?

It mounts via suction cup on the bottom to a window, flat surface or a disc with tape on the other side. It looks exactly the same as the N1 mount with a holder for the S4G. The plastic the holder is made of doesn't look as sturdy as the holder for the n1 though. At $65 I wanna hear some feedback before buying it.

saw those - expansys and htc-uk are the only places that I've found it for sale
I'd also love some feedback before throwing away almost $70. If its a high quality dock, I'll get it, the N1 dock was pricey but worth it, however it also came with bluetooth and built in speakers...
That's an interesting design. The base looks solid, just like the N1's dock, and I loved mine.
Hope this one actually holds the phone well. It does look a little flimsy.
Just gotta find somewhere in my car to actually mount it without it being in the way.
I'm going to checkout expansys' return policy and bite the bullet. I got a better idea of what's going on with by looking at the Desire dock. That image in the first post is at a horrible angle. It looks like the Desire dock with different placement of the black bar that has the microusb plug. The brown plastic the phone sits in is kinda see through. It looks like HTC is using that black bar + brown holder as a basic form for their docks now. They all have the same base and arm. I'm thinking the charger is similar too. I plugged the adapter cord from my N1 charger into the S4G and it went from 70% to 100% in maybe 15 minutes - much faster than every other method I've tried including the stock charger.
I have this dock, and it is perfect quality.
I kinda not like the degrees of rotation which are limited in one way, so it is hard to find the right way to mount it so you can use it landscape and portrait, but I have a strange mounting-angle in my car so you probably be just fine.
The moving parts are tight enough, even on a bumpy road it does not change position.
Phone goes in perfect, and the usb connector can move on a little spring so when taking it out, bending it, you will not damage the connector on the phone. It's getting used to putting it in, but once you know it you be fine.
So, good thing, good quality, good holding of phone, can recommend.

Thanks, I think I'll order one on Friday.
Brodit has offered a sensation doc in pre-order now, might be worth waiting for it. I loved the brodit products ...
I will make pics, hard to make pics with the phone when it is in the dock Need to fetch another device for that. Maybe tonigt.
I'm mainly interested in some pics of the dock.
Sorry I posted in the wrong area.
Pic and vid for you.
The mount to the dashboard is self-made! The carkit has a sucktion-mounting, I made something myself to mount that sucktion plate to.
It clicks in really tight. Connecting it goes very well, just get the feeling.
Releasing it by pushing the right small piece that is sticking out, then it releases. It sits very good and stiff.
You're the man Riel! Great work on the vid, pic and mount!
Very cool. I'm getting that. HTC owes you a commission.
Nice.
Nice work, Riel.
I just have one concern: do you all think the device will still fit inside the mount, even whilst wearing the "barely-there" case from Case-Mate, for example?
I often rely on my phone's GPS, since I travel out-of-state alot... but I'm also not sure I want to snap off the case every time, just to place it in the mount.
Any insight?
Sweet, thanks for the video. Looks to be just as good build quality as the Nexus One car mount, and that thing was damn solid. Glad to see HTC didn't skimp on this one either.
Looks nice, but $65 is insane! You could buy a dedicated GPS for that price (and that would come with a mount).
Xenomix. A brand from Korea which has really impressed me with it's quality of products. It's a pain to wait for the products from overseas, but it's well worth the wait IMO. My first product was a Xenomix car mount that can be used with BOTH my N4 and N7 with it's respective cases. Granted you cannot use the car mount with the N4 and charge at the same time, but I am ok with that sacrifice. Search for my threads on the Xenomix car mount in the Nexus 7 threads if you want to look at pics there.
Then I was sent a Xenomix stand. It's a generic phone or tablet stand meant for the Galaxy S3. I told the seller to send me one of those whereas I had an idea of using it for my mad scientist reasons lol.
This was before xmas so I knew I would be getting this by the middle of January, but alas, it came in today (1/10/13).
I excitedly ripped the packaging and I found the great generic phone stand. Inside the package was a bit of rubber that looked like it was a cut piece of the soft rubber from manufacturing but I figured I'd keep the piece just in case I needed it.
Next I slid the underside of the stand out. This is meant if you place a tablet in the stand to prevent it from tipping over or falling back due to the weight distribution. I slid the LG wireless charger in the stand.
Next I put the phone right on top of the charger and guess what?!?! It holds in place and charges!!!!! Remember that rubber piece I was referring to earlier? I used a glue stick and stuck the soft rubber piece (Same material used to hold the device in the stand-its really soft) in front and used it as a anchor mount. It's not needed, but it works! Check it....

The stand can be found only on ebay that I have seen. It's a generic Xenomix Smart desktop stand (in black or white) made for the galaxy tab or ipad. model SHG-DK100.
I forgot to initially mention that I have a Diztronic Ultra Hard Shell installed. I will try using TPU cases tomorrow to ensure that this setup can still be used with something a little more thicker like the Diztronic TPU case.
wow you weren't ling when you said "Ghetto-Rigged." Over all nice job.

LOL I know I'll probably just cover the entire bottom with electrical tape to cover up the 'booster' lol.
I did the same thing at home with the Energizer qi charger lol. I have another landscape version of the this dock for the Sensation and put the Energizer pad landscape as well so that the dock won't easily tip over. Then put a rubber band to keep the charger from slipping off and viola! Another ghetto rigged stand for viewing the phone in portrait rather than layin down lol. I can post pics for that too. Not that pretty either. LOL
BUMPERS!
Edited OP with NEW stuff!
Normally I don't understand bumping accessory topics, but in this case, thanks! If I decide to blow the money on the charging pad I will definitely follow in your footsteps and make one of these, seems awesome

Well the thread was initially created when I ghetto-fitted a dock to fit the LG pad, but looked really really tacky lol. This looks a bit more cleaned up and more like something I would buy if created lol.
For sake of saving face a bit, I just deleted the old pics and lil write up I did on the ghetto-fitted dock, I replaced it with the write up you see today .
Thank you!! I ended up picking up two of these docks and I'm now using them with my LG chargers. $30 for both stands and now I can use my charger as I always wanted. The cheapest charging stand I could find that had a decent angle was a Nokia on Amazon for $67 at only 750 mA. This solution was PERFECT for me! Thanks very much for posting!

NP, glad it worked for you. This was done months ago lol. I have since moved on to the charging orb at work and Tylt VU at home. But I am glad it helped someone :good:.

I have the orb at home... Works well, but the angle isn't steep enough at times. I looked at the Tylt VU and had the same issue. Angle was a little low for my needs. Plus, I have the LG chargers just laying around, so they can now be used again!
Hello everyone,
I'm the proud owner of a Nexus 4, probably just like you all who read my right now.
I'm really turned off by the prices at which all the motorcycle GPS are sold (they're waterproof) (ie : Tomtom Rider)
So I just thought to myself as you would expect "hey why wouldn't I use my Nexus 4 running Waze?!". Still there's the water(un)proofness of the device which makes me want to find a way to use it anyway.
There sure are some cases that are supposedly waterproof like the "ram mount aqua box 20". Yet, if i'm planning on a long ride, i'm really going to need to charge my phone. And the problem is that i'll have to open the case a little to let the cable in to charge (and I am now assuming that there is enough space to connect the cable at the bottom and close the case just around the wire... which is unlikely to be so.)
So I just thought to myself again "hey! why is it they haven't thought about a wireless charging, waterproof case?!"
That would solve the whole problem!
Has any of you lot ever heard about any such accessory for phones (even if not for the Nexus 4)?
(Oh and I'm really sorry about any english flaws you encountered in this message, I'm not an english native speaker. )
EDIT : For those who would have not got my point, this is what it could look like :

What problem??? Nexus 4 has qi wireless charging built in...why does the case need it, too? Just get any case, snap it on, and wireless charging should still work. If not, return the case and complain that it keeps wireless charging from working. But I can't honestly imagine a single case in existence doing this.
Know how I waterproof my phone?? A ziplock bag.

Hello and thank you for your reply.
I think you misunderstood what I was thinking of though.
I know that the Nexus 4 can be charged by Qi. But as far as I can tell, there are absolutely no "wirelessly" charging cases adapted to motorcycles.
I am just thinking about something like this :
on the top of which would be glued/fixed a totally waterproof case for the phone and the charging orb would have to be mounted to the handlebar with a system like this (for example) :
The big difference with a wire charging ordinary case is that you don't have to let any wire in the case, so there is absolutely no way for water to get inside the case.
It would basically look like this (with a FLAT and THIN Qi charger unlike this Nexus Orb) :
I understand that my english is ... well... not really all that good so if you want me to re-explain myself in another way, it's no big deal

You do not need a qi-capable case for Nexus 4...in fact, they don't even exist. This is because the phone already has the ability!! I think you are either using the wrong word for what you are describing, or you may be confused. There is no special case for this. It just works.

Okay I really think you're not getting my point  Thank you for your interest though! I'm going to try to say it in other words.
Alright i KNOW the Nexus 4 HAS already the Qi stock inside it. What i want to do is to charge it by Qi, trough the waterproof sealed case! So that not a single drop of water is able to leak inside the case, just because it's sealed!
So obviously the case itself, appart from being waterproof, has nothing special, The only thing we want from it is to be well fixed on to the Qi charger.

So you are just looking for a waterproof case, then?? I don't understand why all the confusing qi drawings were necessary...that's what confused me. I'll have a look, though, because I woukdn't mind having one either. I ride my bike a ton and I get caught in tghe rain a LOT more than anyone would expect. Like I said, I've always just used a zipper seal plastic bag up until now.
Most highly protective cases are too thick to operate Qi charging through. Just get a good case, run a wire through, use silicone sealant, and you'll be good.
