Sorry if I am no expert. But I rooted my phone on 4.4.2, today I got the 4.4.3 update, so I downloaded it. I use SuperSU, so I turned on the survival mode, which was meant to keep my phone rooted through the update.
I run stock rom with franco kernel. Now from what I understand, I can install OTA's but that usually would overwrite the root privileges and stuff. Anyways, so I turned on survival mode on SuperSU and ran the update. I was installing, and then got the Error Android icon, the phone eventually started back up after few minutes of that screen.
When I check my root access it's still there, however, under the version of the system it's still 4.4.2 and I don't see anymore updates.
Sorry if I am new to this, but can someone explain rather or not the update pushed through, if not is my system currently messed up in anyways? And what should I do from here in order to get 4.4.3 kitkat.

Short answer: You need to flash the stock kernel or else the update will fail everytime. Give that thread a read (or at least the first post), and please search next time prior to posting.

No worries. :good: You'd be surprised how many times I've done a search and realized there were plenty of other people that had been in the same exact type of sticky situation I had been in at the time. You can definitely learn a lot from the stickies. That's how I learned all the basics about ADB and Fastboot, which is why I prefer to flash everything manually instead of using toolkits. There are some pretty knowledgeable people roaming these here forums.

I seem to be a bit stuck here. I have tried the stock OTA update but it hangs on reboot with the caution android symbol (I was just going to root with the new tools). I have now installed Clockwork and I am trying to go through the incremental updates but it is failing with assert failed:file_getprop ....release keys" trying in order 8.6.5.6.13 then ...18 then ...19 but cant get passed .13 I am getting that error. Sorry can somebody throw me a bone it has been so long since i updated and I used nvflash to just flash the partitions to get what is currently on there. I am reading around a bit but it isnt helping I am sure I am doing something stupid. I dont mind be reprimanded and moved but can somebody throw me a bone. I still have to flash my xbox 360 and I thought that would be the more difficult to update.
I have an older secure key version tf101 with htj85b.us_epad-8.6.5.6-20110726 that I rooted along time ago everything works and I still have root currently
Pretty sure for stock OTA updates, you can't be rooted.

I was wondering if rooting via towelroot would affect OTA updates? Someone told me you don't get OTA if the system files, bootloader or kernel have been changed. I am completely on stock now. Will apps like Droidwall, Titanium Backup or Greenify make any changes to the system files, hence rendering my phone not eligible for OTA?

Read the OTA helpdesk thread about OTA. Link in my signature. Those apps should be fine but you should root properly and use a custom recovery of you're going to be rooted and forget about OTAs.

I agree! Being rooted without a custom recovery and/or not knowing how to use adb/fastboot is almost asking for trouble.
@rootSU gave you the best info.
You have a Nexus. You can flash stock in minutes when you need to do an ota. Or forget that and flash the update through fastboot. I've never taken an OTA on any device.
Thanks for the replies folks. I just dont feel like unlocking my bootloader at this very moment since there's stuff to backup and I am at the peak of my laziness ( and also very busy to do stuff with my phone)
Edit: Yeah, I sideloaded the 4.4.4 update. Can I sideload any update like this in the future even if I don't receive automatic updates? (i.e doesn't sideload verify that all original files are intact?)
Probably best avoid root in that case then.

Nice. You relax and we'll figure it out? That's not how XDA works my friend. Ask for help, put some effort in after you get answers. That's how it works.
I'd leave the phone as is and call it a day.

I'm running KitKat 4.4.2 rooted. Two days ago, Verizon started trying very aggressively to push a system update onto my phone, and they don't say what it is. Does anyone know what they're trying to force into my phone? I do not want to lose root.
Also, is there any way to stop the aggressive update prompts? If I don't manually set a time to be prompted again, it will push the update without my consent. Is there an Xposed Framework module that can help?

It's this (VZW pdf-file). Also see here. Even if you downloaded the OTA, the installation would fail, because your device is rooted.

I can see why they updated the messaging app. It was completely unusable. Is it still KitKat 4.4.2?

Hi, I have the Droid Razr Maxx HD xt926 as well and have never done anything with android before in terms of software modification. I first learned how to root my phone and unlock the bootloader in June via the towelroot exploit. I've been wandering around this website wondering how to get this ota update without losing root. I've seen some posts regarding flashing an fxz file, but have also had a hard time understanding what it all means. I have not installed a custom ROM (yet), but when I try to take the ota, it fails because I am obviously rooted. What do I do from this point out? Do I still need to flash a stock image file? Should I just not take the update/is it worth it?

If you decide to install a custom ROM, you won't have to waste another minute pondering the OTA. If you decide to stay on stock, and want to get VZWs latest firmware on your device, I strongly suggest that you triple-read and follow the instructions in this thread to the T. You will then not have to worry about another OTA nag, because this is the last Moto/VZW update for the XT926.
Okay thanks. I saw that thread on the general forum, but wasn't to sure if I should proceed. I'm going to follow the directions on the original post as I had been planning to do, but was too worried about any consequences. I will report back if I have any problems, given that I can follow instructions. I'll probably just go ahead and try to install the most recent stable release of CM when done. Fingers crossed.

Why am I like the only one confused? I just received my Nexus 5 (I know I'm late in the game), and updated to 5.1. I would like to root, but don't really know what the best way is. Should I just wait on a new, easier way that is currently in the development process?
Also I am reading I'd have to go back to stock to get any new OTA updates, and I read that can be kind of a PITA. So do you think root is still worth it? Honestly I just want viper4android, Adaway, and Greenify. That's it.

Both are right. There is a manual way (flashing SuperSU through TWRP) and there is an "automated" way (the chainfire auto-root). Pick your poison.
The manual way will most likely wipe your device because the "unlock" step does that. I'm honestly not sure about the auto-root method, but I'm going to guess it probably also wipes.
As for OTA, yes, you need a stock recovery to get OTA, because.... well... the OTA uses the stock recovery to update. Most people are of the mind that if you're the type of person who flashes a custom recovery like TWRP, you're also the type of person who doesn't care about OTAs (the .zip is typically posted here within hours of the OTA going live anyway).
There are risks and drawbacks to any kind of hacking of your phone. Risks obviously include bricking, but the drawbacks usually include having to wipe and reinstall things once in a while, and also the lack of OTAs. Pick your poison.

Being a Nexus device this process is pretty straightforward and does not need all of the utilities to obtain root
HI was downloading the new update 5.0 but it stopped and now the tablet says me "your system is updated" but with the 6.0.1.I can't restart the download now,what i have to do???

Nvidia might have pulled it to fix something wait patiently it will come.
I had a similar problem as well. I got the notification to download the update, and when I clicked on the "Download" button in the notification, it did nothing. When I went into my settings and opened the OTA updater, it kept telling me that "Your system is up to date," even after repeatedly pressing the "Check Now" button, selecting "Clear data," rebooting, and messing with the advanced settings. I hope they fix this soon, I was really excited about this update!

Paste it to internal memory, boot into recovery and apply update from zip.
Just wait a little. That's what NVIDIA calls "staggered rollout".
Just wanted to update and say that I got my OTA this morning and will apply it later this afternoon. Guess, just as suggested earlier, they staggered them. It's strange though that they actually pulled it back, but then again it might have been an issue with it.
if you have "nougat launcher apk" just delete it.

Honestly I don't recall if it was difficult or not but I know for previous phones I've had there was a rooted version of the OTA that someone would post within a day or two of the release. Made the whole update process quicker and easier.
Also, for those who have updated, how is the performance compared to Marshmallow?
My 2 cents: if the root is confirmed to work, there is no "process" per se.
D/L the root zip to the tablet, boot into recovery, flash that zip and reboot into system.
Should be within 2-3 min the whole thing.

Performance feels good so far. Don't know if there will be a pre-rooted version, but it's fairly simple and fast to root since your bootloader is unlocked and you'll get to keep all your data. If you want custom recovery I had to use the TWRP app after root to flash the recovery. Couldn't get it to stick using fastboot. There's a good rooting guide here:

Thanks for the info and the guide link. If I'm rooted can I let the update to nougat proceed and then just follow the procedure in the link? Thought I read somewhere that I need to unroot it first.

Yes you can just apply the update and there's no need to flash stock first. If you want to flash TWRP I would recommend getting root first by sideloading (like in the guide) and then using the TWRP app to flash TWRP.
I'm now rooted again with TWRP as custom recovery.
